Weatherproofing Kit
DXE-WK-2
Reliable weatherproofing is important to protect equipment and cables from damage caused by moisture penetration. The DXE-WK-2 Weatherproofing Kit is one option to help ensure your Amateur Radio system is protected from moisture damage. The following describes the DXE-WK- 2 Weatherproofing Kit as being used with lightning protectors as an example, but this kit may also be used on other items that may require weatherproofing as well.
Most lightning protectors are not weatherproof. The DXE-WK-2 Weatherproofing Kit is used to fully encase a lightning protector and the connectors that are in an environment that would allow moisture to accumulate. The DXE-WK-2 Weatherproofing Kit is used to prevent moisture from penetrating the lightning protector.
Included in the DXE-WK-2 Weatherproofing Kit is one roll of Scotch® 33+ Vinyl Electrical Tape, 3/4” wide by 66 feet long. One piece of vapor wrap, 3” wide by 6” long. The vapor wrap material may be cut into smaller pieces as needed. The vapor wrap material is a non-conductive, black, tacky product that does not harden or crack and is reusable. The temperature range for this material is -65° F to +180° F. Large protectors or other items being protected may require more than one DXE- WK-2 kit.
When applying the DXE-WK-2, first use one layer of the Scotch® 33+ Vinyl Electrical Tape over the connectors and
threaded areas of the lightning protector. Peel the vapor wrap material off of the paper. Cover all exposed areas using the vapor wrap material. Slightly overlap pieces and squeeze or press the vapor wrap material to itself for a complete weatherproof seal. When the vapor wrap is all in place, add one layer of the Scotch® 33+ Vinyl Electrical Tape. This layer helps prevent contamination of the vapor wrap material from dust, dirt, UV, etc.
The DXE-WK-2 Weatherproofing Kit may also be used to seal cable entrances if the gaps are minimal.
To remove the weatherproofing, remove the vinyl tape, peel back the vapor wrap and then remove the initial layer of electrical tape. This is accomplished easier when the surrounding temperature is warm. The vapor wrap may be pressed into a single layer and reused as long as there is no dirt or other contamination present.
