TECH TIP
Installing a PL-259 on RG-400 Coaxial Cable
Parts:
PL-259 UHF Connector, Solder type
UG-175S Reducer
RG-400, coaxial cable
Tools Required:
Knife
Ruler
Small Wire Brush
Wire trimmer
Soldering Iron & Solder
Ohm Meter
Assembly:
Place the PL-259 shell and the UG-175S adapter over the coaxial cable.
Using a sharp knife, make the first cut on the coaxial cable to carefully remove the outer jacket
about 3/4" long - do not nick or cut the braided shields..
Trim the braided shields back about 1/2".

Using a wire brush, comb the shield braids evenly outward.
Slide the UG-175S reducer even with the bottom of the shield braids and fold the braids over the
UG-175S reducer. Trim the braid strands away from the threaded portion of the UG-175S reducer.
Carefully make the second cut on the RG-400 and remove the insulation from the center conductor
approximately 1/2". Do not nick or cut the center conductor wires.
Install the PL-259 body over the coaxial cable and thread the reducer completely in the body.
Visually inspect the connector assembly. There should be shield braid visible through the solder
holes in the side of the PL-259. There should also be center conductor wire visible in the end
of the PL-259 center pin. Use an Ohm Meter to verify there are no stray pieces of braid shorting
out the center to the shield.
Solder the PL-259 side holes and center pin. Use an Ohm Meter to verify no shorts between center
pin and shield. Repeat the steps for other end of coaxial cable assembly. Use an Ohm Meter to
verify proper continuity from center pin to center pin, shield to shield and no shorts between center
pin and shield..
