Congratulations on your purchase of the Rio 600 portable digital audio
player! Rio is the perfect comp anion for active peop le—delivering sk ipfree music for people on the go. The Rio connects easily to your PC or
Mac for downloading compressed digital audio tracks. Use the Rio software to convert tracks from your audio CDs into formats for playback
on the Rio or to download tracks from the Internet.
Before you can listen to your favorite music with your Rio you must
first:
1Install the battery.
2Install the Rio software from the CD-ROM.
3Connect the Rio to the USB port on your computer.
This guide shows you the basics of how to set up and start using your
Rio. To learn more:

Use of headphon es while operating a vehic le is not reco mmended and is
unlawful in some states and areas. Be careful and attentive while driving. Stop operation of the player if you find it disruptive or distracting
while operating any type of vehicle. Instead of using headphones, use
the car cassette adapter accessory to listen to the Rio through your car’s
speakers.

Power up the Rio
1Firmly press the button on the back of the Rio 600 and slide the
backpack toward the bottom of the player to detach the backpack.
2Remove the backpack from the Rio 600.
3Remove the cover over the backpack battery compartment. Ligh tly
squeeze the cover to unsnap the tabs that hold it in place.

into the backpack battery
compartment. Match the + and ends on the battery to those shown
beside the battery compartment.

1Place the software CD in the CD-ROM drive on your computer.
After a few seconds, the installation menu displays.
2Click the Install button on the i ns tallat ion menu. Select Rio Audio
Manager.
3Follow the instructions on the computer screen.
4Reboot your computer when the installation is complete.

If the installation menu does not display automaticall y, follow these
steps to begin the installation manually:
1Click the Start button in bottom left corner of the computer screen
and choose Run...
2Type d:\setup32.exe in the field labeled Open. If your computer’s
CD-ROM drive uses a letter other than “d”, substitute that letter for
“d”.
3Click the OK button and follow the on-screen instructions.
Tip: When the installation is complete, th e Rio Audio Manager
icon is visible on you r computer’s desktop.
Mac
1Place the software CD in the CD-ROM drive on your computer.
2The CD contents display automatically. To manually display the
CD contents, double click the icon on your computer’s deskto p .
3Double click the Install button. The installation menu displays.
4Click the SoundJam button to beg in the installation.
5Reboot your computer when the installation is complete.

1Plug one end of the USB cab le into th e multifunct ion port on top of
the Rio.
2Plug the other end of the USB cable into the USB port on your
computer. On the Mac, the USB port is typically located on the
keyboard.
Tip: The multifunction port provides connections on the top of the
Rio for the USB cable or for the headphones or headphone remote
accessory.

Register the Rio player and software
To register the Rio player, click the Register button on the installation
menu. Remove the backpack to see the serial number (S/N) located on
the back of the Rio player under the backpack.
To complet e so ftw a re regi str a tion, follow the instructions when installing the software. For online software registration, the Rio player must
be connected to the computer and turned on.
To register Rio Audio Manager, click the software Help menu, then
click Upgrade Online. Register Rio Audio Manager on each computer
you plan to use it with.
SoundJam promp ts you to registe r online when you first open the pro gram.
Refer to the software Help menus or the Rio User Guide FAQ section
for details on software registration.

Rio Audio Manager (PC)
The Rio Audio Manager creat es, stores, and or ganizes your digi tal audio
tracks. The so ftware incorporates t ools for you to manage digital au dio
content from your PC. Click the buttons along the top of the Rio Audio
Manager window to use the various digital audio management tools.
Use Rio Audio Manager to:
•Create and organize the audio content on your computer.
•Organize the audio content on your Rio player.
•Write an audio CD.
•Create compressed digital audio tracks from your music CDs. You
can convert your entire CD collection into compressed digital
forma t . The Rio A udio Manager software allows 50 free MP3
tracks converted from CD-ROM prior to registration.
•Search for and download digital audio from the Internet.

Make a playlist
Click this button to build and manage playlists and albums to listen to
on your PC. Organize audio tracks on your computer.
1Click the make a playlist but ton. The empty window displays.
2Click the Select Tracks from Database or the Select Playlists
from Database buttons.
3Select tracks you wish to listen to by clicking the check box to the
left of the song title. Scroll down as necessary to find a track.
4Click the OK button. The main screen displays the selected tracks.
Copy to devices
Click this button to organize the content on your Rio. Download playlists and tracks to your Rio player for playback on the go.

Take your favorite song from a CD and convert it into compressed digital audio format for playback on the Rio or on your PC.
1Insert an audio CD in your computer’s CD-ROM drive.
2The sof tware prompts yo u to go online to the CD Database
(CDDB) Web site for title, artist and track information. If you have
an Internet connection, click Yes to immediately connect to CDDB.
3Select the tracks you want to convert by clicking the check box to
the left of the song title.
4Click the Start Reading button.

Rioport.com
The built-in Internet browser connects you to sites like the RioPort W eb
site at www.rioport.com. Search for your favorite audio tracks on the
Web and download them directly to your computer.
To download a song from the RioPort Web site:
1Click the title.
2Click the Download button.

The Rio Audio Manager software includes online Help. To learn more

Using buttons and controls
1Power (On/Hold/Off): Slide the power switch on top of th e Rio to
turn the power on and off, or to put the player buttons in Hold
mode. Hold temporarily locks the buttons on the Rio except th e
Power switch.
2+ and - (Volume): Press + to increase the volume; press - to
decrease the volume.
3Menu: Pr e ss Menu to display Audio, Player, Prefs, and About
menu options.
Press the
igate to different menu options. Press Select (the center joypad but-
ton) to choose the highlighted menu option. Press
>> and << (Forward and Reverse) joypad buttons to nav-

pause. When paused, the Play/Pause icon appears as two
vertical bars on the LCD, and the Current Song Position blinks
to show the time it was paused. If the Rio is left in Pause mode
for an extended period of time, it goes into sleep mode to
conserve battery life. Press

5Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): In play mode, the LCD provides
the following information—clockwise from the top left:
•Song name: Disp lays the title of the currently selected track.
Song name scrolls if the name is longer than the width of the
display.
•Hold icon (lock): Appears if the player is set to Hold mod e .
Hold locks all buttons except the Power switch on the player.
•Divider line: Serves as a visual break to organize the display.
•Current song position: Displays the play location in the current
track in minutes:seconds (mm:ss) f or m.

•Play/Pause icon: Displays either a “play” icon (triangle) or a
“pause” icon (two vertical bars), to show the current action of
the player.
•Volume level: Displ ays the volum e setting in both digital and
graphic form. The bar-graph disappears as volume is reduced

•Track display: Displays the number of the currently selected
track and the total number of tracks on the player. Tracks are
numbered from 1-99. If a playlist is active, the track count
shows the number of tracks in a playlist.
•Album name/track information: Displays album and artist
name and track information. If the name is longer than the
width of the display , the name is cut off with an ellipsis. (“…”)
Album name displays for a few s econds, then disappears . After
album name disappears, artist infor mation displays, followed
in a few seconds by track information. Track information
includes the codec type (MP3, WMA, and so on), the bitrate
