Operating the Device
Onyx subwoofers can be used for different purposes, but it's important to be aware of the following information before use in order to achieve optimal performance.
Warning Before Use
Devine's Onyx subwoofers are capable of producing volume levels that can cause temporary or permanent hearing damage. Use these units with care and keep the volume at a reasonable level when possible. The volume should ideally be set to a comfortable level when listening to music.
Devine cannot be held liable for any injuries or damage resulting from the use of this product.
General Use
Housing
This Onyx subwoofer has a housing made of wood that’s reinforced with bracing on the inside for an overall solid construction. The exterior has been finished using a special lacquer that’s resistant to light impacts and scratches.
Ensure that during use, storage and transport the subwoofer is securely placed and cannot topple over or be damaged by nearby objects that might fall or shift.
Handles
The Onyx subwoofers are fitted with handles on the side. Except for the 18” version, all models have one handle on both sides. Due to the size and weight of the 18” version, it has two handles per side.
This eases the handling and transporting of the subwoofer. Stacking multiple subwoofers is possible with a maximum of 3 per side. While the use of fastening straps is possible, these may damage the lacquer finish.
Wheels
The subwoofers have screw threads and bolts to accommodate the mounting of wheels. Standard 80/100mm wheels from all well-known manufacturers can be mounted as long as the distance between the centre of the bolt holes measures 80 x 60 mm. Any combination of fixed and swivel castor wheels can be installed; whether braked or not. Braked wheels are recommended, however, so that the wheels are fixed in place and cannot cause any unwanted noise when the subwoofer is being used.
For transportation in a car, van or truck, it’s recommended to remove the wheels and install the rubber feet to prevent the subwoofer from shifting while in transit.
If you do not wish to install wheels because the subwoofer is, for instance, used as part of a fixed installation, it’s recommended to leave the pre-installed bolts in the subwoofer as holes and apertures in the housing will cause air leakage.
Protection During Transport
While Onyx subwoofers can be transported, they are not waterproof and caution is therefore advised if they are taken outside when raining or in adverse weather conditions. If they are exposed to moisture in any form, ensure that they are completely dry again before use. Failure to do so may result in a short circuit which could cause permanent damage or injury. Exposure to moisture can also cause visible or invisible corrosion which may cause damage in the long term.
Grille
Onyx subwoofers are equipped with a metal grille on the front that protects the speaker components behind. The grille should not be removed by the user. The acoustic foam behind the grille keeps the components safe from moisture, dust and other small particles.
Distance Rod Flange
The information in this user manual is subject to change at any time without notice.
Version: 1.0 Date of creation and author's initials:11-01-2020 RV Revision date and author's initials: -
Devine Onyx subwoofers are fitted with a flange with an M20 screw thread into which a distance rod can be securely screwed to form a stable base on which a full-range speaker (satellite speaker) can be mounted. Using this kind of set-up saves the space that a normal speaker stand would take up. Since the weight of a subwoofer is usually greater than that of a standard speaker and has a larger top surface, it provides a more stable base than a stand. Always make sure to place the subwoofer on a completely level surface that is able to withstand the combined weight of a full-range set up.
Voltage Switch
This speaker is fitted with a voltage switch so that it can be used in multiple set-ups. The voltage switch is usually set correctly and should not be changed. The voltage switch is normally set at 230V as standard. If you have any doubts, contact your retailer for further advice. Please note: when using a different voltage, a fuse with a different value needs to be installed. For more information about this, see the specifications.
Audio Technology
The Onyx series comes with various functions that aim to make the life of an audio technician that bit easier. By following the tips and instructions below, you’ll be able to get the best possible performance and sound quality out of your new speaker.
Connecting SXA Subwoofers to Passive Speakers
The Onyx SXA subwoofers operate at their best in combination with your retailer-selected Onyx speakers.
The SXA subwoofers come fitted with locking speaker sockets that can be used to connect passive speakers using compatible cables (not included).
The impedance of any connected satellite speakers must be a minimum of 8 Ohms. It’s not possible to connect multiple 8-Ohm speakers to a single output as this may result in problems due to amplifier overload.
Connecting Signal Sources with Cables
The Devine Onyx 10SXA is fitted with professional balanced combo-sockets to which both standard jack and XLR plugs can be connected. These sockets are compatible with most professional audio equipment including DJ controllers, DJ mixers, PA mixers and so on.
LED Indicators
The green LED on the subwoofer lights up when the speaker is turned on and connected to an active power source.
Each red LED for the volume controls is an indicator for the CLIP/PEAK limiter and will light up when the amplifier module is overloaded after being fed an excessively strong input signal. If this occurs, turn down the volume of the corresponding speaker to attenuate the signal. Try to configure the speaker system in such a way that the LED doesn’t light up and keep monitoring and listening to ensure the sound maintains its quality. Next to causing permanent damage, overloading the amplifier module can significantly shorten the lifespan of any of the speaker components or the amplifier. Any damage caused by incorrect use of the subwoofer or the speaker is not covered by the warranty.
Link Outputs
The link outputs on the Onyx series subwoofers are included to accommodate additional active satellite speakers and to determine the scalability of your speaker system. It is, for instance, possible to connect a number of smaller passive speakers for monitoring and set up larger speakers for the audience.
Using a Microphone
It’s not possible to directly connect a microphone to any of the Onyx subwoofers. It is advisable to first connect a microphone to a PA mixer so that you have control over the sound and volume. The master output of the mixer can then be directly connected to the subwoofer.
For optimum sound quality, make sure to hold the microphone close to the mouth: a maximum of around 5cm from the lips. Speak loudly and clearly into the microphone so that minimum amplification and gain is

needed. Microphones are usually directionally sensitive and as such, will not pick up any sound that’s directed at its sides or from behind.
Never hold a microphone in front of the speakers since this will cause a feedback loop and result in a very high and piercing tone. If feedback does occur, move the microphone away from the front of the speaker immediately and turn the volume down so that the feedback loop is closed and the noise is stopped.
It is always advisable to have speakers or vocalists stand beside or behind the speakers to avoid any possible feedback. If it’s directly in front of, or just to one side of a speaker, the microphone is likely to pick up the sound coming from the speaker and cause feedback.
Using External Equipment
It's possible to use the Onyx subwoofers with external equipment like crossovers, equalisers and speaker management systems. Bear in mind that using external equipment may change the sound character of the speaker.
0-180° Phase Switch This switch can help solve any low-frequency inhibiting acoustic problems. Normally, this switch is set to 0° but it is possible to set it to 180° if you experience any acoustic problems in combination with the satellite speakers being used.
Crossover Switch/ HPF
The crossover switch can be used to send the lower frequencies to the subwoofer and the higher frequencies to the connected passive speakers. Using the switch, the crossover frequency can be set between 100 and 140 Hz. For a deeper sound, you can turn it to 100 Hz. If you prefer that the subwoofer takes care of a larger portion of the lows to achieve optimal passive satellite speaker performance, then set it to 140 Hz. Feel free to experiment with the settings to find what best suits the situation.
DSP presets The 15SXA and 18SXA subwoofers come with built-in presets which can be used to determine the basic settings depending on the situation or purpose.
The following presets can be selected:
- Main: This is the main preset to get a balanced sound from all connected speakers.
- Music: This preset can be used when the connected combination of speakers is used for music playback. It boosts the lower frequencies for a fuller sound.
- Live: This preset is perfect for live use (e.g. a small band including vocalists). The higher frequencies are sharpened in order to better cut through the mix.
- Speech: This preset can be used to more effectively reproduce the higher frequencies while attenuating the lows. It ensures increased intelligibility when the system is specifically used for speech (e.g. during presentations).

Subwoofer Troubleshooting Guide
If you have a problem with your subwoofer, please consult this troubleshooting section for possible solutions. If, after consulting this section, the problem remains unresolved, please contact your retailer for more information and/or help.
This troubleshooting section contains information on how to solve the most common subwoofer problems, but it does not and cannot cover every eventuality. It is possible that you won't find your problem, cause and solution in this section because product details may differ.
Problem Possible cause Solution
Speaker does not turn on with mains power
Defective fuse Check the fuse, which is located
under the power input, to rule out of it's blown or not. If it is blown, replace it with a new fuse of the same type and class.
Problem with the power cable Check that the power cable is
plugged into an active power socket and the speaker properly. Try using another cable of the same type to determine if there's a problem with the power cable and if there is, replace the problem cable.
Speaker doesn't turn on Check if the power switch on the
back of the speaker is set to the 'on' position.
Power LED doesn't light up If the speaker is connected to an
active power socket, the fuse has been checked and the power switch is ON but the power LED is not lighting up, there may be a problem with speaker itself. In this case, the speaker should be turned off again and you should contact your dealer for assistance.
No sound via one of the inputs Cable not connected properly Make sure the cable between your
sound source and the speaker is connected properly.
Switch in wrong position If present on the input channel, set
the signal switch to the correct position for the connected device.
Microphone is not on Make sure the microphone switch,
if present, is switched on.
No sound from the master output Volume control is not turned up Turn up the master control volume
to a sufficient level.
Red Clip Limiter LED lights up often or continually
Volume is too high Decrease the volume level on the
speaker or the connected audio source device. Continuous exposure to overloading can cause permanent damage.

Connected device is transferring a distorted signal
Check if any of the connected source devices are transferring a distorted signal and turn down the volume on the offending device if necessary.
Volume control is too loud Turn the volume down
The tone controls for treble and/or bass are too high or too low.
Turn the tone controls back to 12 o'clock and listen to hear if clipping is still audible.
The sound from the subwoofer is ducking out or is more present in certain places
Incorrect positioning / acoustics Try to reposition the subwoofer to
see if this solves the problem. If it does not, use the phase button. This can help normalise the acoustics of the room. If this doesn’t solve the problem then two or more subwoofers may be required to further amplify the sound.
