Safety Instructions
The following safety precautions must be observed during all phases of operation, service and repair of this equipment. Failure to comply with the safety precautions or warnings in this document violates safety standards of design, manufacture and intended use of this equipment and may impair the built-in protections within. Delta Elektronika shall not be liable for user’s failure to comply with these requirements.
Installation Category
The Delta Elektronika power supplies have been evaluated to installation category II (Over voltage category II).
Grounding of Mains Input
This product is a safety Class 1 instrument. To minimize shock hazard, the instrument chassis must be connected to the AC Power Supply mains through a three or four conductor power cable for resp. a single or three phase unit, with the ground wire firmly connected to an electrical ground (safety ground) at the power outlet.
For instruments designed to be hard-wired to supply mains, the protective earth terminal must be connected to the safety electrical ground before another connection is made. Any interruption of the protective ground conductor, or disconnection of the protective earth terminal will cause a potential shock hazard that might cause personal injury.
Grounding of Power Output
If the output of a unit is specified to deliver max 60Vdc, and either the negative or positive power output is grounded, the voltage on the following connections can be considered safe:
- power outputs and sense connections
- programming/monitor/status-signals, Interlock, Master/Slave-connections, ACF/DCF-relay
- all Delta Elektronika interfaces
Warn ing:
When the pos i tive power out put can ex ceed 60Vdc in re spect to the neg a tive out put, ad di tional ex ter nal mea sures must be taken to en sure safety iso la tion
- power out puts and sense con nec tions.
Warn ing:
When the neg a tive power out put of the unit can ex ceed 60Vdc / 42.4Vpk in re spect to ground, ad di tional ex ter nal mea sures must be taken to en sure safety iso la tion
- power out puts and sense con nec tions
- pro gram ming/mon i tor/sta tus-sig nals, In ter lock, Mas ter/Slave-con nec tions, ACF/DCF-re lay
- in ter faces with op er a tional iso la tion
- non-iso lated in ter faces.
Caution 1: If a low voltage unit has both power outputs floating, or if the output is in series with an external high AC or DC voltage, the negative power output can exceed the safe value in respect to ground as specified in the above warning!
of the fol low ing:
of the fol low ing:
Caution 2: Although a high voltage unit is set to a safe voltage below 60V, for safety it must always be considered as high voltage unit! Wrong operation, a programming error or an external defect can result in an unsafe high output voltage.
Caution 3: When programming a high voltage unit directly via a PC or via a network connection, either ground the negative power output or use a safety isolated interface!
For more information and schematics regards Grounding and Safety, see the special application note "Safe operation of a power supply" on the Delta Elektronika website.

Cir cuit de scrip tion
Sim pli fied func tional di a gram
The in put volt age is rec ti fied by a bridge rec ti fier. A boost-type con verter con verts this volt age to about 370 V. The power fac tor con trol cir cuit forces the line in put cur rent to be sine-wave.
With an NTC re sis tor of 16 Ω cold re sis tance the in rush cur rent is lim ited. Af ter switch on, the re sis tance of the NTC de creases rap idly and causes only a small loss dur ing op er a tion.
The pulse width reg u lated switcher is a 100 kHz for ward con verter. Much at ten tion has been paid to the safety of in put-out put iso la tion. At the vi tal sep a ra tion points split bob bin trans form ers are used.
At the out put multilayer ca pac i tors are used in stead of elec tro lytic ca pac i tors. This makes it pos si ble to pro gram the out put volt age fast (0 - 30 V in 1.5 ms) with out lim i ta tion of the rep e ti tion fre quency.
The pro gram ming in puts and mon i tor out puts of volt age and cur rent are 0 - 5 V for 0 to full scale.
At Mas ter / Slave par al lel op er a tion the cur rent mon i tor out put of the mas ter drives the cur

the slave. The re sult is equal cur rent shar ing.
At Mas ter / Sl ave se ries op er a tion a volt age equal to the volt age mon i tor out put of the mas ter drives the volt age pro gram ming in put of the slave. The re sult is equal volt age shar ing.
RFI fil ters at in put and out put pre vent ra dio fre quen cies, gen er ated by the switcher, to be con ducted to the line or to the load. It also pre vents in ter fer ence from out side to en ter into the power sup ply cir cuits.
Ra di ated RFI is also very low be cause of the closed metal case.

Pro gram ming in puts, Mon i tor out puts
The out put volt age and cur rent of the ES030-10 can be pro grammed with an ex ter nal volt age. A pro gram ming volt age 0-5 V re sults in zero to full scale at the out put of the power sup ply. With a switch at the rear side of the power sup ply man ual con trol (knob at the front panel) or re mote pro gram ming can be cho sen. The mon i tor out puts of volt age and cur rent are 0-5 V and pro por tional to the out put volt age and cur rent. The pro gram ming con nec tor is a 15 pole D-con nec tor which is pin com pat i ble with other Delta Elektronika power sup plies and with the ex ter nal IEEE488 in ter face.
Warn ing:
The zero of all the pro gram ming in puts and mon i tor out puts are in ter nally con nected to the mi nus power out put.
The in ter nal fuse be tween the mi nus of the power out put and the re turn of the pro gram ming in put is a self re cov er ing PTC fuse.

Re mote con trol, pro gram ming con nec tions and the po si tion of the man ual/pro gram switches
Ethernet / IEEE488 / RS232 pro gram ming
The Delta Elektronika PSC-ETH and PSC-232 con trol lers can be built in side the power sup ply. The 15 pole D-con nec tor on the power sup ply is pin com pat i ble with the ex ter nal IEEE488 in ter face (PSC-4 88 module). With these in ter faces the volt age and cur rent can be pro grammed and read back by the com puter. On the rear side of the unit change the po si tion of the switches from Man ual to Pro gram ming and use the pro gram ming in put of the in ter face to con trol the out put of the power sup ply.
Over Volt age Limit
The ES030-10 has an Over Volt age Limit which is fac tory set at 34 V but can be in ter nally ad justed be tween 6 and 34 V with trim mer R402. The OVL can be set a few volts above the de sired max i mum out put volt age. In case the volt age potmeter at the front panel or the pro gram ming volt age is ac ci den tally set too high, the out put volt age is lim ited to the set OVL volt age.
Par al lel and Se ries op er a tion
Se ries op er a tion is al lowed up to 600 V t o tal volt age. Par al lel ing of units has no lim i ta tions. Volt age and cur rent have to be set equal on all units with the con trol knobs. For eas ier con trol, Mas ter / Slave op er a tion is rec om mended.
Mas ter / Slave op er a tion
When us ing Mas ter / Slave op er a tion both cur rent and volt age can be set with the con trol knobs of the mas ter. The slave power sup plies will fol low the mas ter re sult ing in equal volt age or cur rent shar ing in the se ries or par al lel mode re spec tively. In case of re mote pro gram ming the mas ter is pro grammed and the slave(s) will fol low. By us ing the Mas ter / Slave se ries fea ture, a Dual Track ing power sup ply can be made with one unit as mas ter and one as slave.

Set ting up Mas ter / Slave op er a tion:
Connect the out put ter mi nals and test the sys tem in nor mal par al lel or se ries op er a tion. En sure that all (out put)
power con nec tions are re li able. An in ter rup tion of one of the power leads can cause a PTC fuse in side the unit to trip.
The volt age drop across the power leads be tween the units should be kept < 10 mV.
Switch off all units. For Mas ter / Slave se ries op er a tion, use a Mas ter / Slave Se ries Adapter for each slave.
Plug in the pro gram ming con nec tors with the con nec tions ac cord ing to one of the fig ures be low. Put both pro gram ming switches on the slave power sup plies in the "PROG" po si tion and switch the units on again.
The to tal out put volt age and cur rent can now be con trolled by the knobs on the mas ter.
Al ways use shielded ca bles for the pro gram ming con nec tors and the M/S Se ries Adapt ers.
The shield ing should be con nected to pin 1 of the pro gram ming con nec tor, only at one end.
The max i mum num ber of slaves in se ries op er a tion is lim ited by the max i mum to tal volt age of 600 V.
A com bi na tion of Mas ter / Slave par al lel and se ries is also al lowed.
For each se ries slave, a Mas ter / Slave Se ries Adapter must be used.

In su la tion
For safety the in su la tion of the seperating com po nents (trans form ers) be tween in put and out put is tested at 3750 Vrms dur ing 1 min ute. This is tested be fore as sem bly. Warn ing! The 3750 Vrms can not be tested af ter wards on the as sem bled unit be cause the in su la tion be tween the com po nents on the in put side to the case (like the bridge rec ti fier) is spec i fied at 2500 Vrms. Since the in su la tion out put - case is low (only 600 VDC) the in su la tion of the pri mary com po nents to case will break down when 3750 Vrms is ap plied be tween in put and out put (2500 Vrms + 600 VDC <3750 Vrms)
(see also the fig ure be low).
Cal i bra tion
Gen eral
The power sup plies are fac tory cal i brated and nor mally need no fur ther cal i bra tion.
Me ter cal i bra tion
The full scale in di ca tion of the volt me ter can be cal i brated with trimpotmeter R480. The full scale in di ca tion of the Cur rent me ter can be cal i brated with R490.
