BIOS (System Setup Program) Settings

The BIOS is a utility that serves as an interface between the computer hardware and the operating system. You may need to update your BIOS settings when you remove and replace certain hardware components.
NOTE: Although your computer’s time, date, or password can be changed using
the BIOS, using options provided by the operating system is recommended.
Use the system setup program to:
Change the system configuration information after you add, change, or remove hardware in your computer.
Set or change user-selectable options such as your password.
Verify information about your computer’s current configuration, such as the amount of system memory.

Overview

The Windows taskbar is usually located at the bottom of the desktop, although you can relocate it. The taskbar provides quick access to open minimized windows on the desktop, or to frequently-used programs, files, or utilities on your computer.
The basic sections of the taskbar are:
Start button Provides access to the Start menu, which lists the
programs and system utilities installed in your computer. Use the Start menu to start software applications and to change computer settings. If you move or resize your taskbar, the Start button moves or resizes with it.

Desktop Icons and Shortcuts

Some icons are shortcuts and other icons are direct links.
Icons for shortcuts — Identified by an arrow in the icon, shortcuts are links to programs, files, or folders. You can safely delete a shortcut without affecting the item it links to.
Icons for programs and files — Icons for program files, documents, or folders do not include an arrow graphic.
HINT: For better performance of your computer, create shortcuts to
files and folders rather than placing them on the desktop.

Cleaning Your Computer’s Display Screen

To clean the display for a desktop computer, wipe the screen with a soft cloth dampened with water.
To clean the display screen for a laptop computer, wipe the screen with a soft cloth dampened with either water or an LCD cleaner.
CAUTION: Do not wipe the computer’s display screen with any soap or solution
not designed for monitors. These solutions can damage the monitor’s anti-glare coating. Do not spray cleaners directly onto the screen.

Adjusting the Resolution of Your Display

The display resolution defines the clarity of images on your display. As you increase the resolution, items appear smaller on the screen. As you decrease resolution, text and images appear larger.
Before you change any of the display settings, make a note of the current settings so you can change back to them if needed.

Troubleshooting

Blurry text: If you change the display resolution from the current settings to one not supported by your computer and display, the image may appear blurry or text may be hard to read.
Unsupported resolution or color settings: If you choose a resolution or color palette that is higher than the display supported by your computer, the settings adjust automatically to the closest supported values.

Choosing the Best Display Settings

Default display settings are set for your computer based on the monitor or display screen. Access the Display Properties window from the Control Panel to determine the resolution of your monitor and make any changes.

Setting the Display Resolution for External LCD Monitors

Set external LCD monitors to their native resolution, the resolution at which the display performs the best. See the manufacturer’s documentation for this information.
If you cannot determine the native resolution, set the monitor to perform at the highest resolution. Although your monitor can probably support lower resolutions, the display quality will be not be as good.

NOTE: Your laptop computer may not have an ambient light sensor.
NOTE: The ambient light sensor adjusts the display brightness on your laptop
computer only. It does not control the brightness on external monitors or projectors.
The ambient light sensor is located on the front of the computer display. The sensor detects available environmental light and automatically increases or decreases the display backlighting to compensate for low-light and high-light environments.

You can enable or disable the ambient light sensor feature by pressing the <Fn> and left-arrow key combination.
NOTE: Do not cover the ambient light sensor with any adhesive labels. If covered,
the sensor—when enabled—automatically sets the display brightness to the minimum level.
NOTE: The ambient light sensor is disabled when your computer is connected to
an electrical outlet.
Using the display brightness key combinations disables the ambient light sensor and the display brightness increases or decreases accordingly.
NOTE: Rebooting the computer returns the ambient light sensor to it’s prior setting
(either enabled or disabled).

Touch Pad

You can use your finger for touch input (or a Tablet PC pen on some computers) to move the cursor or select objects on the screen:
To move the cursor, lightly slide your finger or pen over the touch pad.
To select an object, lightly tap once on the surface of the touch pad or use your thumb to press the left touch-pad button.
To select and move (or drag) an object, position the cursor on the object and tap twice on the touch pad. On the second tap, leave your finger or pen on the touch pad and move the selected object by sliding your finger or pen over the surface.
To double-click an object, position the cursor on the object and tap twice on the touch pad or use your thumb to press the left touch pad button twice.

Circular Scrolling

NOTE: Your laptop computer may not support the circular scrolling feature.
To configure the circular scrolling, double-click the Dell Touch pad icon in the notification area of your desktop.
In the Scrolling tab, enable or disable scrolling or circular scrolling, choose the scroll zone width and scroll speed.

Setting the Default Printer

Set the printer you use most often as the default printer.To set a specific printer as your default printer, right-click on the printer icon, and select Set as Default Printer. A checkmark appears above the icon of the printer selected as the default.

Sharing Printers on a Network

A shared printer is one that receives input from more than one computer. A shared printer is also called a network printer. Once you are connected to a shared printer on the network, you can use it as if it were attached to your computer.
To share your printer on a network, you must first add a network service to your computer.

Solid-State Drive (SSD)

A solid-state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data. Solid-state is an electrical term that refers to electronic circuitry that is built entirely out of semiconductors whereas Hard Drives use a magnetic media.
Unlike flash-based memory cards, an SSD emulates a hard disk drive, thus easily replacing it in most applications. An SSD using SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) or DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory), instead of a flash memory, is often called a RAM-drive.

Working with RAID

A redundant array of independent disks (RAID) is a disk storage configuration that increases performance or data redundancy. There are four basic RAID levels discussed in this section.
NOTE: RAID requires multiple hard drives. The number of hard drives required
varies depending on the RAID configuration.
RAID level 0 is recommended for higher performance (faster throughput).
RAID level 1 is recommended for users who need a high level of data integrity.
RAID level 0+1 is recommended for higher performance and data integrity
RAID level 5 is recommended for higher performance and fault tolerance.

RAID Level 0

NOTICE: RAID level 0 provides no redundancy. Therefore, a failure of one drive

RAID level 0 uses data striping to provide a high data access rate. Data striping writes consecutive segments, or stripes, of data sequentially across the physical drive(s) to create a large virtual drive. This allows one of the drives to read data while the other drive is searching for and reading the next block.
RAID 0 uses the full storage capacities of both drives. For example, two 120­GB hard drives combine to provide 240 GB of hard drive space on which to store data.
NOTE: In a RAID 0 configuration, the size of the configuration is equal to the size of
the smallest drive multiplied by the number of drives in the configuration.

RAID Level 1

RAID level 1 uses data mirroring to enhance data integrity. When data is written to the primary drive, the data is also duplicated, or mirrored, on the second drive in the configuration. RAID 1 sacrifices high data-access rates for data redundancy.
