WHERE TO LOCATE YOUR SurroundBar®SDA
®
FOR THE BEST SOUND
It’s easy. Just center the SurroundBar SDA under your TV screen. Using the supplied cradle mounts, place the SurroundBar SDA slightly in front of your TV. If your TV is housed in a media center, you can place the SurroundBar SDA above the TV. The SurroundBar SDA can also sit on a flat surface without using the cradles.
If your TV is wall mounted, the SurroundBar SDA can mount right beneath it. The SurroundBar SDA has built-in keyhole slots that make it easy. Use the supplied wall mount template so that the speaker is centered beneath your TV.
WHERE TO LOCATE YOUR WIRELESS SUBWOOFER FOR THE BEST SOUND
Your Wireless Subwoofer is really easy to place and can go just about anywhere in the room. Plus you don’t have to worry about connecting wires, because the only wire you have to plug in is the power cord to an AC outlet. And that’s it.
Here’s a little trick: If you place your subwoofer in a corner of your room, it will reinforce the subwoofer’s output, making it sound louder.

GET READY FOR GREAT SOUND
A few easy steps, and you’re ready to start enjoying your SurroundBar
1 Connect the SurroundBar SDA Power Supply to the
SurroundBar SDA and plug the other end into an AC outlet.
2 Plug the Subwoofer Power Cord into an AC outlet
and into the back of the Wireless Subwoofer.
3 Turn on the power switches on both the
SurroundBar SDA and the Wireless Subwoofer.
4 Turn on the other components in your system
and tune to a familiar channel.
You should hear sound from the SurroundBar SDA. If you don’t, turn up the volume on the SurroundBar SDA using its volume control buttons.
If your SurroundBar SDA is connected to your TV , try adjusting the volume using the TV remote control. If the volume level of your SurroundBar SDA changes, it means it is connected to a “variable” output. The mute control on your remote control should also work. In this case you do not have to program your SurroundBar SDA to respond to your remote control. If the volume level does not change, refer to page 10 ”HOW TO SET UP A REMOTE CONTROL FOR YOUR SurroundBar SDA.”
If your SurroundBar SDA is connected to your TV , there’s a very good chance your TV speakers are also playing. It’s impossible to give specific instructions on how to turn off the speakers for every TV, but here’s a way to do it that covers many of the TVs out there.
®
SDA®Instant Home Theater.
1 On your TV remote control, find a “menu” or “setup” button.
2 Press this button. You should see an on-screen menu.
3 Next, look for an option to control audio functions
and select it.
The setting to turn off your TV’s internal speakers should be here.
HOW TO OPTIMIZE THE SOUND WHEN TV SPEAKERS ARE ON
If you can’t turn off your TV internal speakers, don’t worry. Your SurroundBar SDA will make your TV sound much better.
To enjoy the best performance from your SurroundBar SDA, you’ll want it to play louder than your TV . Use the following steps to adjust the volume balance between your TV and the SurroundBar SDA:
1 If necessary program your SurroundBar SDA to respond
to the volume up and down control commands of your TV remote. (See “HOW TO SETUP A REMOTE CONTROL FOR YOUR SurroundBar SDA.” on page 10.)
2 Turn your TV volume all the way down using the control
buttons on your TV.
3 Then, using the volume control buttons on your
SurroundBar SDA, set the volume to a normal listening level.
After you make these adjustments, your SurroundBar SDA should always be louder than your TV speakers. Then use the TV remote control to adjust the volume as you normally do.
NOTE: You may need to adjust the GAIN LEVEL to “3” to compensate for the low TV volume setting (See page 10 for details).
Customer Service Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday, 9AM-6PM EST polkcs@polkaudio.com 9
FINE TUNING YOUR SurroundBar®SDA®IHT SOUND
The next thing you’ll want to do is adjust the Wireless Subwoofer to blend with your SurroundBar SDA speaker. This will ensure the system produces the best sound.
Set the Wireless Subwoofer’s volume to the middle of its range. Now play a variety of source material—some music, a movie sound track with great special effects, a movie chapter or a part of a concert in which people are speaking. Adjust the volume until what you hear sounds natural to you in your normal viewing location.
Remember—The SurroundBar SDA can learn to respond to almost any button on almost any remote. Decide what remote you want to use —television, satellite receiver, cable control box, etc.—and program your SurroundBar SDA to respond to the buttons you want to use.
If you make a mistake, or want to erase the remote control programming of the SurroundBar SDA, here’s what you do:
1 Press and hold the “MUTE” and “REMOTE”
buttons simultaneously.
MUTE REMOTE
HOW TO SET UP A REMOTE CONTROL FOR YOUR SurroundBar SDA IHT
If your existing TV or Cable/Satellite remote does not change the volume of the SurroundBar SDA, then your SurroundBar SDA is connected to a “constant level” (or “fixed”) output. This means you’ll want to program your SurroundBar SDA to respond to the remote control codes of your existing remote or any other remote control you want to use. Ideally, you will need only one remote for your system.
Example: To have your SurroundBar SDA learn the “mute” command of your remote control:
1 Press and hold the “REMOTE” button until the status light
MUTE REMOTE
turns orange and starts blinking.
2 Press the button on the SurroundBar SDA that you want
to program to respond to your remote control—in this case
MUTE REMOTE
the “MUTE” button. The status indicator should stop blinking and turn a steady orange.
3 Point your remote control at the front of the SurroundBar SDA
from approximately 12" (30cm) away. Press and hold the mute button on your remote for a full second then release the button for a full second. Repeat the press and release sequence until the status indicator starts blinking green.
2 The status light flashes red and orange for several seconds.
NOTE: This procedure removes ALL of your SurroundBar SDA
remote control programming. If you only need to change the programming for some of the SurroundBar SDA buttons, follow the three steps in the left-hand column to redo any previous programming.
DETAILS ABOUT SurroundBar®SDA
Power—The power switches on the back of the SurroundBar
SDA and Wireless Subwoofer can be left on. The SurroundBar SDA has an automatic power standby system. After about 15 minutes of inactivity, the amplifiers will shut down. As soon as a signal is applied to the inputs of the SurroundBar SDA, the amplifiers automatically turn on again.
Channel ID Switches—Both the SurroundBar SDA and Wireless Subwoofer have Channel ID switches. The switch settings change the frequency of the wireless signal the SurroundBar SDA sends to the Wireless Subwoofer. The two switches must be
set to the same position.
Example: Switch Settings
Wireless
SurroundBar SDA
CHANNEL ID 1234
Subwoofer
CHANNEL ID 1234
TIP: Hold the remote steady and press/release the button slowly so your SurroundBar SDA can learn the remote signal.
If your SurroundBar SDA fails to learn the remote control signal it will blink red. If this occurs, repeat steps 1 - 3. Be sure to keep the remote steady and press the button slowly.
Repeat the process for the other buttons on your remote control that you want your SurroundBar SDA to learn.
10 Polk Audio Customer Service 800-377-7655 (Outside USA & Canada: 410-358-3600)
You’ll probably never need to adjust these switches. If you put more than one SurroundBar SDA IHT system in your home, use different Channel ID switch settings so the systems don’t interfere with each other .
Gain Level Switch—This changes the input sensitivity of your SurroundBar SDA. If the output of your television is too low, you may need to change the Gain Level to “3” to make the SurroundBar SDA play louder. Conversely, if you hear distortion, set the Gain Level to“1” to make it sound better .
TROUBLESHOOTING SurroundBar SDA IHT
SurroundBar SDA does not power on.
Ensure you have plugged the power supply into a live wall outlet. Ensure that all components of the power supply are connected properly. Ensure the power supply is properly connected to the SurroundBar SDA power input. Ensure the rear panel power switch is in the “on” position.
Wireless Subwoofer does not power on.
Ensure the subwoofer is plugged into a live wall outlet. Ensure the rear panel power switch is in the “on” position. Check the fuse to see if it is blown. If it is blown, be sure to replace it with one of the same rating.
No sound from SurroundBar SDA.
Check that the TV or cable box is providing a signal. Check that the SurroundBar SDA is receiving power and is turned on. Turn up the volume of the SurroundBar SDA. Check RCA cables. Turn up the volume of your television or cable box. Check Mute status: Is the status light slowly blinking green? If so, press the Mute button on the SurroundBar SDA. Change GAIN LEVEL to a higher setting.
No sound from the Wireless Subwoofer.
See section “Wireless Subwoofer does not power on.” Turn up the volume control. Is the SurroundBar SDA status indicator blinking orange? If so, the SurroundBar SDA and Wireless Subwoofer have failed to establish a wireless connection. Turn off both the SurroundBar SDA and Wireless Subwoofer. Then turn them back on to re-establish communication. Ensure the Channel ID switches on the SurroundBar SDA and Wireless Subwoofer are set to the same number.
The sound coming from the SurroundBar SDA is distorted.
Change the Gain Level switch setting to a lower number . Check the signal source to ensure the distortion is not coming from there.
Bass output not loud enough.
Turn up the Wireless Subwoofer’ s volume control. Place the Wireless Subwoofer closer to a corner of the room. Move wireless subwoofer closer to viewing location within the room.
SurroundBar SDA won’t learn my remote control commands.
Carefully follow the programming instructions on the previous page of this manual. Hold the remote steady and 12" (30cm) from the front of the SurroundBar SDA. Press and release the remote control button slowly.
Note: The SurroundBar SDA learns almost all IR commands, but some IR protocols cannot be programmed.
There is a “pop” noise when I turn off my television.
Program the SurroundBar SDA to be turned on and off with the power button on your television remote control.
The volume of my television speakers gets louder than my SurroundBar SDA system over time.
Turn off your TV speakers per the instructions on page 9 of this manual. When the remote control volume button is held down, your television may change volume levels faster than the SurroundBar SDA. Use the buttons on the SurroundBar SDA to adjust the volume of the SurroundBar SDA to the correct balance with the television speakers.
The Wireless Subwoofer’s output is intermittent, or sounds weak or is distorted.
Try changing settings of the Channel ID switches on both the SurroundBar SDA and the Wireless Subwoofer. The Wireless Subwoofer could be too far away from the SurroundBar SDA to receive a sufficiently strong signal. Trymovingitcloser.
A Note Regarding Wireless Performance:
Like all wireless devices, your SurroundBar SDA IHT may be susceptible to RF interference from such sources as microwave ovens, WiFi computer systems, video game systems, cordless telephones, blue tooth systems, baby monitors, and other devices. In particular, any devices operating in the 2.4GHz band may cause intermittent wireless connections between the SurroundBar SDA speaker and the subwoofer. It is also possible that your SurroundBar SDA IHT system may affect other wireless systems. For the most part, you can avoid wireless performance problems by physically separating these devices
Customer Service Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday, 9AM-6PM EST polkcs@polkaudio.com 11
from your SurroundBar SDA IHT system. Maintaining a distance of several feet or more between your SurroundBar SDA IHT speaker and any wireless device should prevent any mutual interference effects. If you do notice any subwoofer signal dropouts take care to identify the root cause (most commonly having other wireless devices too close) and resolve accordingly. Any interference effects from a microwave oven will cease once the oven stops operating and may be resolved on a long-term basis by increasing the physical distance between your SurroundBar SDA IHT system and the microwave oven.
