1. Anwendung

Wenn anzunehmen ist, dass ein gefahrloser Betrieb nicht mehr möglich ist, ist das Gerät außer Betrieb zu setzen und gegen unabsichtlichen Betrieb zu sichern. Dies ist z.B. der Fall;

Seite
18
Page 19
Steckerleiste aufgesteckt werden (im Lieferumfang enthalten). Dabei ist die Steckrichtung
[IN/OUT] zu beachten.

1. Application
The PM 20 tester is a compact hand-held device for testing surge protective devices and components, for which either the
- Reference voltage at a test current of 1 mA or the
- Sparkover d.c. voltage
is specified. The integrated response detection controls the test current and automatically carries out correct measurement.
Surge protective devices can be tested either in a battery-operated way or by means of the power supply unit included in delivery in a mains-operated way.
This allows for testing
- the reference voltage (of varistors, Zener diodes, Transzorb diodes, etc.)
as well as the
- sparkover d.c. voltage (of SPDs, gas discharge tubes, spark gaps, etc.)
also on site and to evaluate according to manufacturer specifications.
2. Safety and application notes
The PM 20 tester left the factory in faultless condition. In order to maintain this condition and to ensure safe operation, the user has to observe all notes and warnings contained in these operating instructions.
Tests using the PM 20 tester may only be carried out by instructed electricians, who are familiar with applicable safety regulations (DIN VDE 0104).
The PM 20 tester generates a test voltage (see Technical data, page 6), the energy content of which is not life-threatening, but might cause startle responses (follow-up accidents). Therefore, when establishing the test location, it has to be strictly observed that the test location is set up on an insulating surface and that no external devices are located in the area of the test cables.
When connecting the external test circuit, it has to be protected against contact. Therefore, when tests are carried out using the PM 20 tester, the supplied or approved accessory may be used only (see Accessory included in delivery, page 6). Before removing the protection against contact, the PM 20 tester has to be switched off in order to prevent the Test button from being pressed unintentionally. In principle, the devices to be tested should be tested by means of our test adapters (e.g. PA DRL or PA BXT).
Any surge protective device to be tested is to be removed from the system and has to be voltfree, even if they are tested without test adapter.
The PM 20 tester may not be used for charging capacitors.

After switching on the device,
The version of the device is briefly displayed at the LCD
PM20 v1
V
before the ready state is displayed.
Testing is started by means of briefly pressing the Test button, whereas the LCD is cleared . As a result, the test voltage rises with 1000V/s and is permanently displayed
xxxxV
. If the Test button is not pressed again, the test current monitoring system records the
brk xxxV
V
at the LCD. If the Test button was pressed once again, testing would be cancelled
response of the device under test, switches off the test voltage and stores the response value and type of response in the LCD:
Characterises the measurement result 400V as the 1mA reference value of a varistor,
VR 400V
Zener diode, Transzorb diode, etc. or at a resistor.
GA 230 V
Indicates that the measured value 230V is the sparkover voltage of a gas discharge
tube or a spark gap, etc.
> 1100 V
Indicates that the testing range was exceeded due to a higher sparkover voltage of the device under test or due to an interruption of the test circuit.
In order to evaluate a measurement result, it has to be compared with the relevant reference lists in these instructions or with the manufacturer instructions, whereas the type of response (VR or GA) is irrelevant.
Attention! Keeping the Test button pressed extends the test period, i.e. as long as the Test button is pressed, the test voltage remains switched on and is displayed permanently at the LCD.
- Using a varistor, Zener diode, etc. or resistor, involves that the test current is kept constant
at 1 mA after the device under test has responded.
- If a gas discharge tube or a spark gap, etc. is used, a glow potential occurs after the device
under test has responded which is, however, undefined and puts unnecessary strain on the device under test. After the Test button is released, the recorded response value is displayed
again.
low BATT
If is displayed during testing or if low BATT remains displayed after switching on the tester, this message corresponds to the Low battery indication, i.e. in order to continue testing, the battery has to be replaced or the accumulator has to be recharged or the power supply unit included in delivery has to be used for external power supply.
Before replacing the battery, the device has to be switched off and all cables have to be unplugged. Some types of batteries do not provide sufficient energy in order to generate the adequate test voltage. Preferably batteries of the alcaline type are to be used. The battery compartment at the rear side of the device can be opened using your finger nail or a screw driver. Remove the discharged battery, fix the new 9V battery at the clip and close the battery compartment.
Page

Page 37
Please note the disposal guidelines for used batteries and accumulators.
The input to the external supply is protected against polarity reversal. However, the polarity of the connection has to be observed in order to ensure proper operation of the PM20 tester (see Test set-up).
If it can be assumed that safe operation is not possible anymore, the device has to be switched off and protected against unintended use. This may be the case
- If visual defects are detected
- If the device does not function properly anymore
- If the device has been stored for a longer period of time and under inappropriate conditions
- If the device was submitted to stress during transport
The device is subject to the EC directive 2002/96/EC concerning waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), i.e. the device has to be recycled after use according to stipulations by law.

5
Test button
Testing is started by means of briefly pressing the Test button. This involves that the test voltage rises at 1000 V/s until the device under test responds, i.e. the integrated test current monitoring system evaluates the response behaviour, stores the test result and finishes the test automatically.
6
Measured value indication in [V]
During testing, the value of the test voltage at the test voltage output sockets is displayed. After the test has been completed, this value is stored as test result until a new test is started or the PM 20 tester is switched off. The low battery message is also displayed at the indicator.

7. Test set-up 2 using PA DRL test adapter (DRL, DPL 1/10)
1. Connection of test cables
The PA DRL test adapter is connected to the PM 20 SPD tester, which has to be switched off, via the test cables included in delivery:
- PA DRL; input socket (red) Test cable (red) PM 20; output socket (red)
- PA DRL; input socket (blue)
Test cable (black) PM 20; output socket (black) (see
figure, test set-up 2, page 18)
1.1 Connection of the power supply unit
The power supply unit is connected to the PM 20 via the enclosed phone jack adapter (see figure, test set-up 2, page 18). Alternatively, the PM 20 tester can be operated by means of a 9 V battery.
2. Test procedure
2.1 The PM 20 tester may only be switched on if the test set-up is protected against contact!
The protection module to be tested is inserted into the connection plug board of the PA DRL test adapter. Then, the cover (contact closure) of the PA DRL test adapter has to be closed (see figure, test set-up 2, page 18)!
2.2 For more detailed information on measurements required for testing a protective module,
please refer to the test scheme and the evaluation table (see pages 19 to 21). The test programme (programme selector switch, test circuit selector switch and polarity selector switch) has to be set before testing. When measuring, only one of the two connection plug boards may be occupied.
Protective device DPL 10 F ... type
- When testing protective devices of the DPL 10 ... type, only the upper connection plug board
may be used, which is labelled DPL 10 on the right-hand side.
- When plugging in the protective device, the plug direction [IN/OUT] has to be observed!
The plug direction is marked by IN OUT at the left-hand side of the connection plug board. For protective devices of the DPL 10... type the relevant test programmes have to be carried out for each test circuit. Test circuits 1 to 10 are switched on via the test circuit selector switch (see page 20).
Protective device DPL 1 ... type
- When testing protective devices of the DPL 1 ... type, only the lower connection plug board
may be used, which is labelled DPL 1 on the right-hand side.
- When plugging in the protective device, the plug direction [IN/OUT] is mechanically preset by
means of contact leading (PG connection) of the protective device. The protective device is plugged into the contact of the earthing bracket and respectively into the connection plug board at the contact leading side (PG connection). Up to ten protective devices of the DPL 1 ... type can be tested at the same time by means of the lower connection plug board. Test circuits 1 to 10 are switched on by means of the test circuit selector switch. The relevant test programmes have to be performed for each test circuit (see page 19).
Protective device DRL 1 ... type
- When testing protective devices of the DRL 1 ... type, only the upper connection plug board
may be used, which is labelled DRL on the right-hand side.
- If DRL 1 ... protective devices are to be tested, the EF 10 DRL earthing frame has to be
plugged onto the connection plug board (included in the scope of delivery).

Page 51
The plug direction [IN/OUT] has to be observed. The protective device is plugged into the relevant contact of the earthing bracket of the earthing frame at the contact leading side (PG connection). Up to ten protective devices of the DRL 1 ... type can be tested at the same time by means of the EF 10 DRL earthing frame. Test circuits 1 to 10 are switched on by means of the test circuit selector switch. The relevant test programmes have to be performed for each test circuit (see page 21).
2.3 If the Test button is briefly pressed, measurement is started. Finally, the measurement result
is saved automatically in the display and the test voltage is switched off. The results of all measurements for a protective module have to be the lower limit value (LLV [V]) and the upper limit value (ULV [V]) (see the relevant evaluation table).
2.4 When measuring, test procedure/commissioning has to be observed (see page 30).

8. Test set-up 3, conventional test
Conventional test set-up
For conventional tests (measurements), the surge protective devices to be tested are adapted via terminals, connecting leads or connectors. The safety test clips included in delivery have to be used for surge protective devices with connecting leads or connectors (see figure, test set-up 3)! It is recommended to use standard clamp test probes for testing surge protective devices with screw terminals (see figure, test set-up 3). Depending on the connection technique, the protective devices to be tested have to be adapted to the relevant connections and have to be connected to the PM 20 tester via the two test cables (see figure, test set-up 3).
1. Connection of the test cables
The PM 20 SPD tester, which has to be switched off, is connected via the test cables included in delivery:
- Test cable (red) to the output socket (red) of the PM 20
- Test cable (black)
to the output socket (black) of the PM 20
(see figure, Test set-up 3)
Attention: When establishing the test location, ensure that it is set up on an insulating surface and that no external devices are located in the area of the two test cables!
1.1 Connection of the power supply unit
The power supply unit is connected to the PM 20 via the phone jack adapter included in delivery (see figure, Test set-up 3). Alternatively, the PM 20 tester can be operated via a 9 V battery.

2. Test procedure
2.1 The PM 20 tester may only be switched on as soon as the contacting of the protective device
to be tested is completed according to the specifications of the evaluation table (Pin assignment).
2.2 If the Test button is briefly pressed, measurement is started. Finally, the measurement result
is saved automatically in the display and the test voltage is switched off. The results of all measurements for a protective module have to be
the lower limit value (LLV [V]) and
the upper limit value (ULV [V]) (see relevant evaluation table, pages 23 to 28).
2.3 Measurement is carried out considering test procedure/commissioning(see page 30).
3. Protection against contact
For safety reasons, the PM 20 tester has to be switched off before connecting/disconnecting a device under test! The PM 20 tester has also to be switched off when reconnecting a
device under test at a protective device to be tested!

9. Notes on PA BXT, PA DRL test adapters
The test adapters have left the factory in faultless condition. In order to maintain this condition and to ensure safe operation, the user has to observe all notes and warnings, which are on the adapter and which are stated in the operating instructions for the PM 20 SPD tester.
Note
The devices are subject to the EC directive 2002/96/EC concerning waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), i.e. the device has to be recycled after use according to stipulations by law!
10. Maintenance and care
A water moistened tissue has to be used for cleaning the tester. When opening covers or removing components, live parts might be uncovered unless they are opened manually (battery compartment). Connectors might also be under voltage. The device has to be isolated from any voltage supply source, if the device has to be opened before adjustments, maintenance, repairs or replacement of parts (also battery).
Capacitors in the device might still be charged, even if the device has been isolated from all voltage supply sources.
In order to maintain the faultless condition of the device, it is recommended to carry out inspection and calibration at intervals of 2 years. For more detailed information, please contact DEHN + SÖHNE (engineering and sales department).
