x This manual will provide you with information on how to safely operate and care for your
appliance in order that you gain the maximum benefit from it.
x Pay particular attention to any safety instructions.

If the appliance is damaged in any way do not use it. Report the damage to your dealer who will take the necessary corrective action.

not use an extension cord
with the appliance.
x Never use the appliance if the
power cord or the appliance is damaged.
x If the appliance or power cord is
damaged, it must be repaired or replaced by the dealer, a service centre or a similarly qualified, authorized service person to avoid any dangers. Faulty or unqualified repair work may cause danger and risks to the user.
x Do not dismantle the appliance
under any circumstances. No warranty claims are accepted for damage caused by improper handling.

unattended while it is in use. Extreme caution is advised when the appliance is being used near children and people with limited physical, sensory or mental capabilities.

Safety and set-up
Read the instructions thoroughly
before using the appliance! Follow all safety instructions in order to avoid damages due to improper use! Keep the manual for future reference. If this appliance is given to a third party, this manual must also be handed over.
x Th
is appliance is intended for private domestic use only and is not suitable for professional catering purposes. It must not be used for commercial use.
x Do not use the appliance for
anything other than its intended use. The Toaster is designed for toasting and warming bread and buns only.
x Do
not use the appliance
outdoors or in the bathroom.
x Check if the mains voltage on
the rating label corresponds to your local mains supply. The only way to disconnect the appliance from the mains is to pull out the plug.
x For additional protection, this
appliance should be connected to a household faulty current protection switch with no more than 30 mA. Consult your electrician for advice.
x Do not immerse the appliance,
power cord or power plug in water or in other liquids. Do not hold it under running water, do not clean parts in a dish washer.
x Disconnect the power plug after
using the appliance, before cleaning the appliance, before leaving the room or if a fault occurs.
x Do
not disconnect the plug by
pulling on the cord.
x Do
not wrap the power cord
around the appliance.
x Do not squeeze or bend the
power cord and do not rub it on sharp edges in order to prevent any damage. Keep the cord away from hot surfaces and open flames.

x When using for the first time,
smoke can develop due to production residues. However, this does not mean the appliance is defective. The first time you switch it on, use the appliance as you normally would, but without bread. Ensure for proper room ventilation.
x To avoid the risk of fire,
frequently remove crumbs from crumb tray.
x Do not use the toaster without
the crumb tray in place.
x Do not use this product with any
foods containing sugar, jam or preserves.
x Do
not attempt to extract any jammed toast, muffins, bagels, bread or any other item with a knife or any other object, as contact with live elements may cause electric shock.
x If the toaster begins to emit
smoke during operation, immediately stop the toasting process. If bread gets stuck in the toaster always unplug the appliance before removing the bread. Be careful the bread may be very hot.
x The toaster can only be
switched on when the plug is connected to a wall socket.
x Do not use any tools or objects
in the appliance. Metal objects could cause short circuits or electric shock. Do not damage the heating elements and mechanics.
x Do
not use the appliance as a source of heat.
x Do
not attempt to dislodge bread when the appliance is switched on.
x Al
ways unplug from the wall socket when not in use and before cleaning etc.
Safety and set-up
x Dry the appliance and all parts
before connecting it to mains supply and before attaching the parts.
x Never operate or place any part
of this appliance on or near to hot surfaces such as a gas burner, electric burner or heated oven.
x Bread can catch fire if
overheated. Never use the appliance in or near combustible and inflammable places, materials and furniture. Do not let the appliance come into contact with or become covered by inflammable materials such as curtains, textiles, walls, etc.
x Do
not use paper, cardboard,
plastic in or under the appliance.
x Use bread slices which are
suitable for the bread slots.
x Operate the appliance with
delivered parts only.
x Do not use the appliance with
damp or wet hands.
x Always use the appliance on a
stable, flat, clean, dry and non slip surface.
x Ensure that there is no danger
that the power cord could be accidentally pulled or that someone could trip over it when the appliance is in use.
x Position the appliance in such a
way that the plug is always accessible.
x Avoid touching hot surfaces as
the outer casing becomes warm during use. There is the danger of burning.
x Do
not stick any foreign objects
onto the appliance.
x Th
is appliance must not be operated with an external clock timer or separate remote control system.
x Do
not toast the bread with extremely runny ingredients such as butter.

Operation

1 Remove all packaging and sticker
materials and dispose of them according to the applicable local regulations.
2 Before using the appliance for the first time, clean the appliance (See the “Cleaning and care” section).
3 Make sure that the appliance is in an upright position and on a stable, flat, clean, dry and nonslip surface.
Note
When using the appliance for the first time, smoke can develop due to production residues. However, this does not mean the appliance is defective. The first time you switch it on use the appliance as you normally would but without bread. It is recommended to use the medium setting of the browning control D to burn in. Ensure for proper room ventilation.
Toasting
Insert the plug into a suitable mains supply socket and turn the power on. Place up to two slices of bread, muffins, or bagels into bread slots. Select the desired browning setting, from No.1 to No.7 on the browning control knob. (No.1-lightest, No.7-darkest). When using the toaster for the first time we suggest you toast on number 3. Varying types of bread and personal preference may require a different browning setting.
Press the carriage control lever down until it clicks into place. Toasting cycle will automatically commence. Please note: if the toaster is not plugged in and switched on at the power point the carriage control lever will not click into place. The toaster turns off when the desired toast colour is achieved and automatically raises the toast. The toasting process can be stopped at any time by pressing the cancel button. Use the bread rack to heat up rolls or other bread. Place the bread on the top of the rack. Please note: Do not heat up more than 2 items at a time. Select browning setting and press the carriage control lever down to switch on the toaster. Toasting cycle will automatically commence.

Toasting frozen bread
To toast frozen bread, place the bread into the bread slots and select the desired browning Setting. Press the carriage control lever down until it clicks into place then press the Frozen Button.
Reheating toast
The toaster allows you to reheat toast without additional toasting. To reheat, place toast into bread slots, lower the carriage control lever until it clicks into place and press the Reheat Button.
In the unlikely event that the bread or crumpet becomes jammed, switch the toaster off at the power outlet, remove the plug from the supply socket and carefully ease the bread out of the toaster, ensuring that you do not damage the element..

Caution
Never use petrol, solvents or abrasive cleaners, metal objects or hard brushes to clean the appliance. Never put the appliance or power cord in water or any other liquids.
1 Turn the appliance off and disconnect it from wall socket.
2 Let the appliance cool down completely. 3 Remove the crumbs after each use by
pulling out the crumb tray. Clean the crumb tray with a damp cloth only. Before pushing back the crumb tray in the appliance make sure that the tray is dry. Do not let bread crumbs accumulate inside the toaster, they may cause fire.
4 Turn the toaster upside down and shake it slightly to remove bread crumbs from inside.
5 Use a damp soft cloth and a small mild cleanser to clean the appliance housing. Dry the housing thoroughly.
Note
Before using the appliance after cleaning, dry all parts carefully using a soft towel.

Storage
If you do not plan to use the appliance for a long period of time, please store it carefully. Make sure the appliance is unplugged, cooled down and completely dry. Wrap the power cord around the cable coil on the bottom of the toaster. Store the appliance in a cool, dry place. Make sure the appliance is kept out of the reach of children.

Warranty

This certificate is issued by DEFY APPLIANCES (PTY) LIMITED manufacturers of Defy and Ocean products, hereinafter the Company, to the original purchaser only, of the appliance described on the certificate and shall constitute the only warranty given in respect of this appliance.
The Company warrants to the original purchaser that for a period of ONE YEAR from date of purchase the appliance is free from defect under normal domestic use, both in workmanship and material, subject to the following conditions.
1. Carry-in service. Small appliances are repaired in our service centres and are not collected from the customers home. Faulty units must be delivered to the purchasing dealer or to the nearest Company Service Centre for warranty repairs.
2. Vitreous enamelware, fuses and lamps are specifically excluded from these warranties. It is an express condition of these warranties that the purchaser takes due care and attention in the use and maintenance of the appliance. Abuse, misuse in conflict with operating instructions, connection to incorrect voltages and subjection to commercial use shall release the Company from its obligations.
3. This warranty shall become void and cease to operate if the appliance is dismantled by, or any repairs to the appliance are effected by any persons not duly authorised by the Company, or if substitute parts not approved by the Company are used in the appliance, or if the serial number of the appliance is removed.
4. The Company shall not be responsible for damages resulting from fire, flood, civil disturbances or any Act of God. The Company shall not, in terms of these warranties be responsible nor held liable for any consequential loss or damage of any kind caused by or due to the failure or malfunction of the appliance.
5. The Company shall not be responsible for transportation or other costs other than those incurred within the provisions of Point 1 of this Certificate.
6. For warranties in the Republic of South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, please contact your nearest Defy office. Please refer to the previous page for respective South African service agents and Sub-Saharan Africa service agents.
7. Where service is requested under warranty and no fault or defect can be found by the
Company, all costs incurred will be for the purchaser's account.
8. This Certificate as well as your invoice will serve as proof of purchase. For the purpose of warranty, it will be essential to produce this Certificate and invoice. Failure to do so, will render the purchaser liable for service costs.
KEEP THIS CERTIFICATE AND SALES INVOICE AS PROOF OF
PURCHASE FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES.
