Save these instructions - this manual contains impor tant
safety instructions.
Do not operate the battery charger unles s you have read and
understood this manual and the charger is setup as per these
installation instructions.
1. Risk of explosive gases: Working in the vicinity of a
Lead-Acid battery is dangerous. Batterie s generate
explosive gases during normal operation. For this reason,
it is of utmost importance that you follow the instr uctions
when installing and using the charger.
2. The Batter y Charger should not be used by persons
(including children) with reduced physical, sensory or
mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge,
unless they are supervised or have been instructed on
how to use the appliance by a person responsible for their
safety. Children should be supervised to ensure that they
do not play with the Battery Charger.
3. Do NOT alter or disassemble the Battery Charger under
any circumstances. All faulty units must be retur ned
to REDARC for assessment. Incorrect handling or
reassembly may result in a risk of electric shock or
fi re and may void the unit warrant y. The mains’ power
supply cord cannot be replaced. If the cord is damaged,
discontinue usage.
4. T his charger is designed for use only with LEAD/ACID type
(both open and closed) batteries including AGM, GEL and
Lead Crystal types or LiFePO
cell & battery protection; and for bat tery sizes as shown
on page 8. The charger should not be used for other
battery types or for charging non-rechargable bat teries.
5. Check the manufacturer’s data for your battery and
ensure that the ‘Maximum’ voltage of the profi le
you select does not exceed the manufacturer’s
recommended maximum charging voltage.
6. Check the manufacturer’s data for your battery and
ensure that the ‘Continuous Current Rating’ of the charger
2
batteries with appropriate
4
does not exceed the manufacturer’s recommended
maximum charging current.
7. Batteries can emit explosive gases during normal
charging. Avoid sparks in the immediate area and always
provide proper ventilation during charging.
8. Connect the charger’s posit ive clamp to the positive
terminal on the battery. Connect the negative clamp to
the chassis of the vehicle away from petrol pipes. Then
connect to AC mains and turn the charger ON.
9. After charging, turn off the charger and disconnect from
the mains’ power supply. The negative and positive
terminals can then be disconnected.
10. This charger includes high-strength magnets and should
not be placed in close proximity to magnetic storage
devices such as computer hard drives or tape media.
3
Setting up the Charger
1. Connect the charger’s POSITIV E clamp to
the POSTIVE terminal on the batter y.
2. Connect the Charger’s NEGATIVE clamp to
the chassis of the vehicle, away from heat
sources or petrol pipes.
3. Plug the mains plug into a 240VAC mains
power socket and turn the charger ON.
Operation
DEFA SmartChargers provide batter y charging
for a range of vehicles and equipment such as
cars, motorbikes, 4x4s, recreational vehicles,
lawnmowers, jet skis and boats etc.
Battery Type
Lead acid, AGM, Gel, Lead Crystal and LiFePO
batteries included.
Pre Analysis
The charger checks if the batter y is correctly
connected. The battery ’s voltage (V) and total
capacity (Ah) is measured to determine the correc t
settings for charging.

Charging Profi le
The charger begins charging with a constant current
until the voltage reaches 14.4V (at 25°C). The
charge voltage is then held constant at 14.4V and
the charging current is reduced until it is below a
predefi ned level. The charge voltage then drops to
13.8V, before the long-term charging stage starts.
During charging, the battery charge is shown by the
number of LEDs illuminated; The blinking segment
above these LEDs indicates active charging. Once
full charge is reached, all 5 LED segments will
remain illuminated. If the measured battery voltage
is below 2.0V, the charger will enter Error Mode.
Post Analysis
The charger analyses the batter y again after the
charging stage. If the charger detects an error in
the battery, the warning triangle will fl ash. Post
analysis can detect batteries with a shor t circuit
in individual cells (this cannot be detected in the
Pre Analysis). If the battery ’s voltage drops below
12.5V within 2 min, the charger will go into error
mode. The charging sequence will be stopped.
Long-term charging
After the batter y is fully charged, the charger will
go in to Sleep Mode. This is indicated by all battery
LEDs slowly pulsating. This mode has a very low
power consumption.
After a week in Sleep Mode, the charger will wake
up and begin a new charging cycle. Alternatively
the charger will also resume charging if the batter y
voltage drops below 12.6V.
5
Additional charger functionality
Temperature based voltage compensation
The charger automatically adjusts the char ging
voltage to the correct level according to the
ambient temperature. The default ambient
temperature is 25°C. Voltage is reduced for
higher ambient temperatures and increased
for lower ambient temperatures by ±0.03V/°C.
Max temperature compensate charging voltage
is 15.3 V.
14.7V button
Some batteries require a higher charging voltage
than other batteries. If the 14.7V but ton is
activated the initial charging voltage will be 0.3V
higher than the standard level.
Before activating this button, the 14.7V charge
voltage requirement should be confi rmed. If a
battery requires this higher char ge voltage, it will
be described on the batter y.
Power Supply mode
Press and Hold the button until t he LED shines
one by one in a regular bottom to the top cycle, the
charger will start power supply mode. In this mode,
the charger supply 13.6V.
If the output is short circuit or connected wit h
incorrect polarity in this mode, the charger will go
into error mode. After resolving the error, press t he
power button to turn off the charger, then restart
the charger (go to charge or power supply mode).
6
Automatic restart after mains supply
interruption
If the mains supply is temporarily interrupted, the
charger will continue charging when the power
supply returns.
