LT-3KR INSTRUCTIONS
1. Kiln-Sitter Set-Up: Follow the set-up instructions outlined in your KilnSitter®
Operation Manual as usual. Disregard any references to element switches. If
your kiln has such switches, they should be set on “High”. If your kiln is new, it
might not be equipped with element switches.
2. Set the Turn-Up Time: Use the small control knob at the bottom of the
KilnSitter® to adjust the kiln’s turn-up time. During the turn-up time, your kiln’s
heating rate will be automatically incremented from Off to 100% On. The control
is continuously adjustable allowing you to select any time from ½ to 9-1/2 hours.
3. Firing: When ready to fire, press the plunger button on your KilnSitter®. The
“Timing” light will begin to flash at a rate corresponding to the turn-up rate; fast
for short turn-up times, or more slowly for longer turn-ups. The “Heating” light will
alternately flash on and off as the automatic turn-up controller switches your
kiln’s heating system on and off. At the end of the turn-up period, the lights will
stop flashing, with the “Timing” light Off and the “Heating” light remaining on
continuously.
4. Manual Controls:
SET: To adjust the heat manually, move the knob to the “SET” position and
observe the “Heating” light. With the knob at the “SET” position, the turn-up
controller increases the heating at a rate of approximately 1% per second,
with the “Heating” light flashing every ten seconds. Thus each flash of the
“Heating” light represents an increase of 10%.
HOLD: Moving the small turn-up time control knob to the “HOLD” position
stops the automatic turn-up controller at its current setting and holds the heat
at that level. This may be done at any time during the firing.
5. Manual Operation: The following example illustrates how these two control
functions may be used to operate the kiln manually, to soak the kiln at a low
temperature setting, and so on.
Example: To start the kiln with an over-night low temperature soak, and then fire
with a three-hour turn-up.
1. Set up the KilnSitter® as usual.
2. Press the plunger button.
3. Move the turn-up time control knob to set, observing the “Heating” light.
4. When the light comes on for the third time (30% On or “Low”), immediately
move the control to “HOLD” and leave the kiln at this setting.
5. When ready to fire, move the turn-up control to the desired turn-up time. But
since you have already advanced the control through part of this sequence
manually, increase the setting so that the total length of the “ramp” as far as
the controller is concerned accounts for both the manual setting and the
desired turn-up time. For example, if you wish the remaining part of the turnup sequence to take four-hours, set the control at about 5-1/4 hours.
