The microphone
The RM-101 Ribbon microphone is designed for use in contemporary, state of the art studio‟s, yet offers
the unique natural sound previously only available from exclusive classic large ribbon microphones which
are still used for making great recordings today after almost 70 years. Perfect for recording studio vocals,
acoustic instruments, strings, horns, orchestras and choral groups, ambient instrument audio and many
live sound applications. Powerful and versatile with the unmatched natural sound of classic ribbon
microphones. The microphone meets the stringent requirements of even the most demanding digital
recording and live broadcasting applications.
This manual covers the operating of the ribbon microphone. To take full advantage of your microphone
and to enjoy long and trouble free use, please read this user‟s guide carefully. As ribbon microphones
are, by their design, very sensitive to damage from mishandling and use, it is very important to read and
observe the precautions below about proper use.
Handling your RM-101
The active element of your microphone is a very thin corrugated aluminum ribbon clamped under light
tension and mounted between the poles of a strong magnet. This design enables it to produce a
warmer, more natural sound than any other type of studio microphone. However, this also makes it the
most fragile sensitive and fragile studio microphone available. All ribbon microphones require special
care or they will be seriously damaged. In order to ensure a long life for your ribbon microphone, always
consider the 4 points below.
1. Always protect your ribbon microphone from any hard knocks, such as from dropping the mic or not
properly padding in shipment. Always handle your microphone with care.
2. Prevent any sudden or strong blasts of air movement from ever reaching your microphone, as these
can tear and destroy the fragile ribbon. Never blow into your ribbon microphone! When using we
suggest you to use a plop filter e.g. DAP D1750 or D1751. This will prevent damaging the ribbon from
percussive sounds and from damage from moisture (spit).
3. Never intentionally or accidentally apply any phantom power from your mixer or a phantom power
supply to your RM-101 as this can damage the ribbon. Please always check carefully before
connecting your ribbon microphone that there is no phantom power provided to your microphone.
4. When not in use, always keep the microphone in the padded soft case provided. Also, always store
the mic in a vertical position, because over time, the 2”long ribbons can sag, gradually degrading
performance if the mic is stored on its side.
Note: Damaged ribbon diaphragms are not covered by any warranty.
7
Set Up and Operation
It is always advisable to use a pop filter (not included) when recording vocals, not only to avoid overly
accentuated „S, „P‟ and „B‟ sounds, but also to keep moisture (spit) from the element. It is always a good
idea that the microphone is kept in its case when not in use.
Set all volume and gain controls on your mixer, mic preamp or recording device are at their minimum
settings before connecting the microphone. Make sure, the phantom power is off!
Once the RM-101 is plugged in, move the channel fader gradually to the 0dB position adjust the input
gain using your channel peak led or VU-meter.

Connection Cables
Take care of the connector cables, always holding them by the connectors and avoiding knots and
twists when coiling them: This gives the advantage of increasing their life and reliability, which is always to
your advantage.
Periodically check that your cables are in good condition, that they are correctly wired and that all their
contacts are in good condition: a great number of problems (faulty contacts, ground hum, discharges,
etc.) are caused entirely by using unsuitable or faulty cables.
