CONDITION:
Some early model CE amplifiers may not come out of standby upon power up. When this happens, the fault light will continue to flash on and off indicating that there is a fault condition related to the amplifier. It is likely that the problem may be the formation of condensation under the timing and mute capacitors C121/221/C124/224.
This problem has only occured on PWA's manufactured before November 1998. Main modules for CE1000 (PWA102138-9 and later) and CE2000 (PWA102140-9 and later) have this problem corrected. The timing circuit in the current production modules have been rescaled to a lower impedance and
utilizes an electrolytic capacitor in the timing circuit. The previous revision of this Tech Note (153 Rev.D) described the application of conformal coat after preparation of the circuit board and replacement of specified components. The procedure in this revision (Rev.E) has been modified to utilize leaded ceramic capacitors in place of surface mount components. Conformal coat is also no longer necessary as a result of this revision.

Issue Date: 25 Mar 99 Ref. No: 0156 REV A page 1 of 1 Subject: Bootstrap Resistor Modification
Applicability: CE 1000, CE 2000, Ultra-Tech 1010, Ultra-T ech 2020, S3 and M-240 amplifiers con-
taining the following main boards: CPN 102139-5, CPN 102140-5, CPN 102140-6, CPN 102140-8, CPN 102140-9 and
CPN 127354-1
Diagnosis: Perform this modification on all listed boards for any amplifiers retained for servic-
ing. This modification is required to create a voltage-divider network to divert excess wattage from key main board components. Check first to verify if previous modification has already been performed. Previously installed bootstrap resistor may be located on main board top next to C1 capacitor (original 0156 procedure), or may be spliced into the bootstrap supply wire (0156 REV A procedure).
Part Description: 1k Ohm, 5 Watt resistor (CPN 127442-1)
Clip (CPN 127439-1)
PROCEDURE
11
1 Locate the bootstrap supply wire. This white wire runs from the bridge rectifier to WP6 on the main board.
11 22
2 Cut bootstrap supply wire approximately 6 inches (15 cm) from the end connected to the bridge rectifier . This
22
will be approximately 8 inches (20 cm) from the end connected to the main board at WP6.
33
3 Prep resistor. Hook both leads as shown in Figure 1.
33 44
4 Strip and prep both cut ends of the bootstrap supply wire. Slip a 1-inch length of 4-mm shrink tubing over
44
the cut end of each wire. Slide back to expose cut end. Hook each wire in preparation for soldering (Figure 1).
55
5 Solder each prepared end of the white bootstrap supply wire to the resistor .
55 66
6 Slide shrink tubing over solder joints and set in place using a heat gun. See Figure 2
66 77
7 Slide supplied clip over resistor and mount in amplifier on the corner of transformer closest to the power supply
77
capacitors using existing bolt. See Figure 3.

Conditions: Darlington transistors do not efficiently dissapate heat when fan circuit is idle.
Excessive heat build-up across these transistors may lead to component failure. Discoloration, cold solder connections, and burned circuit traces may be observed as a result of long term over-heating. There may also be other problems caused as a result of these conditions. CarCar

Issue Date: 3 Nov 99 Ref. No: 0160 page 2 of 2 Subject: Heat sink application on Darlington transistors
for CE Series Amplifers
Part Description: Darlington transistors Q1, Q2, and Q3, (CPN 102479-1)
Heat sink (CPN 128379-1) Capacitor (CPN C 3679-5)
Procedure: Remove the top cover of the amplifier, locate the Darlington transistors at the
rear of the amplifier near the fan. If there is a 47 Microfarad, 63 Volt capacitor soldered on diode D10, it must be removed and replaced with a 33 Microfarad, 50 Volt capacitor (CPN C 3679-5) to avoid contact with the fan blade when the heat sink is mounted. Throughly clean the mounting surface with alcohol to remove contamination and allow the surface to dry. Remove the liner from the adhesive backing on the heat sink, being careful not to touch the adhesive with your hands. Press the heat sink onto the transistors so they are completely covered and maintain pressure for 5 seconds.
Summary: This procedure substantially reduces the operating temperature of the
Darlington transistors and the possibility of failure due to long term heat stress.
