T he C rom em eo ST X board is an intellig ent hard-disk eontroller, u sing the
ST-506 standard interface to support a w ide variety of 5-1/411 W inehester drives.
A n S'rm -eontrolled drive can have u p to 16 head s and 1024 ey linders.
A s an intelligent disk controller, the ST IX needs little attention from the host#
ting sb' stem . W ith its ow n Z 8OA m icroproeessor, 641( by tes of R A LI, andopera
direct aeeess to m ain m em oc (D M A ), the ST X allow s the host C PU to eontinue
exeeuting instruetions during disk read/F rite operations, relieving the disk I/O
Hbo ttlen eek 'î afflle ting m any m ul tb -user s'y stem s.
Sy stem perform anee is further enhaneed by the S'rlr ts fou r fu ll-track data*
buffers. O n each disk read , an entire traek is read into one of the data buffers.
W hen subsequent seetor requests are on the sam e traek (as is likely), the data
is im m ediately available. If a11 the buffers are full w hen a new read request
appears, th e ST X either diseards or w rites back to disk the least-used of th e
four buffers (based on frequency of aceess and tim e sinz e last use).

T o run the ST IX &nd W D I-II board s coneurrently in the sam e sy stem , the W D I-II
must be m e ified (refer to appendix C ).

the left. On the drive, the eable strige must be elosest to the edge eonnK torls

(Crom em eo part num ber 519-0225).
Datq Cable - Attach tlle data eable (Crom emeo part num ber 519-0194) to the *
20-pln eonne tor at J5, w ith m e eable sk ip e to l e left. O n the drive , l e eable
strip e m u st b e closest to th e edg e eonnK torss key slot. If y ou hav e 1w o h ard
disks, install another data ce le from J 4 on m e S I'X to the se ond drive .
