Crestron STRFGWX Two-Way RF Transceiver
Two-Way RF Transceiver: STRFGWX
Description
Functional Description
The STRFGWX is a two-way radio frequency (RF) gateway/transceiver that
communicates with Crestron’s wireless STX-1550C 2-Way RF Compact Color and
STX-1550CW Wall Mount 2-Way RF Compact Color Touchpanels. The
STRFGWX receives RF signals from one or more touchpanels (sold separately) and
translates the signals into commands for transmission over the Crestron remote
control system (herein referred to as the Cresnet system). Feedback signals from the
Cresnet system are transmitted from the STRFGWX to the touchpanel(s) for real-
time confirmation of commands. Up to 15 touchpanels can communicate with one
STRFGWX and, if more touchpanels are needed, more STRFGWXs may be added
to the control system.
The RF signals can travel from a minimum of three feet up to a maximum of 50 - 75
feet. Additional range can be obtained by using multiple STRFGWX units
distributed throughout any particular area or installation. The location of the
STRFGWX and the orientation of the antenna are important factors in the RF
performance. With the unit located outside of any metal enclosures and the antenna
positioned horizontally, pointing straight out of the unit, adjust the antenna to
achieve the best range. The range of the unit is also dependent on its placement and
the construction of the building in which it is used.
Included with the STRFGWX is a 4-pin connector plug to connect to other Cresnet
system devices. Also included is an external power pack (PW-1205 for domestic use
or PWI-1210 for international use).
Physical Description
The STRFGWX, shown on the next page, is housed in a black enclosure with silk-
screened labels on the front and rear panels. On the front of the unit are five light-
emitting diodes (LEDs) for indicating the unit’s status and the RF antenna (not
shown for clarity). All other connections are made on the back of the unit. There are
four rubber feet on the base of the unit for stability and to prevent slippage.

2 The location of the STRFGWX and the orientation of the antenna are important
factors in the RF performance. Locate the unit outside of any metal enclosures and position the antenna horizontally, pointing straight out of the unit. Adjust the antenna to achieve the best range. The range of the unit is also dependent on its placement and the construction of the building in which it is used.
Installers can run multiple STRFGWX units which have built-in intelligence so that if both (or several) gateways receive a button press from the touchpanel, only the strongest signals produce an action in the control system. Crestron recommends that the latest firmware be loaded into the STRFGWX and associated touchpanel(s). If the firmware of the STRFGWX is upgraded, the associated touchpanel(s) must also be upgraded at the same time.
3 The latest software version can be obtained from the What’s New page (SIMPL
Windows and Crestron Database sections) or Downloads page (SIMPLWIN and CRESDB Libraries) of Crestron’s website.
4 STRFGWXs and touchpanels with later versions of firmware may include features
not mentioned in this guide. Newer versions of this guide can be obtained from the Downloads page (MANUAL Library) of Crestron’s website.
5 To utilize firmware upgrade files, a STRFGWX with a firmware version earlier than
1.5.0 must be returned to Crestron. The upgrade files can be obtained from the What’s New page (Touchpanels section) or the Downloads page (TOUCHPNL and UPGRADES Libraries) of Crestron’s website (www.crestron.com). New users are required to register in order to obtain access to the FTP site. Crestron recommends that the latest firmware be loaded into the STRFGWX and associated touchpanel(s). If the firmware of the STRFGWX is upgraded, the associated touchpanel(s) must also be upgraded at the same time.
6 CNX update files are required for either CNMSX-AV/Pro or CNRACKX/-DP.
Filenames for CNX update files have a UPZ extension and SmarTouch files are in one EXE or zipped UPZ file. All can be obtained from the What’s New page (Control Systems Update Files section) or Downloads page (OPSYS Library) of Crestron’s website.
7 The weight listed is for the STRFGWX and does not include 4-pin connector plug or

Network Wiring
NOTE: If making category 5 connections to the Cresnet peripherals, refer to the latest revision of the Cresnet Mini Network CAT 5 Interconnect Drawing (Doc.
5819). This document can be obtained from the Downloads page (CABLES and MANUAL Libraries) of Crestron’s website (www.crestron.com). Search for CAT5.PDF. New users are required to register in order to obtain access to the site.
NOTE: Review the latest revision of the Network Modular Cable Requirements (Doc. 5682). This document can be obtained from the Downloads page (CABLES and MANUAL Libraries) of Crestron’s website (www.crestron.com). Search for MODULAR.PDF.
When calculating the wire gauge for a particular Cresnet run, the length of the run and the load factor of each network unit to be connected must be taken into consideration. If Cresnet units are to be daisy-chained on the run, the load factor of each unit to be daisy-chained must be added together to determine the load factor of the entire chain. If the unit is a home-run from a Crestron system power supply network port, the load factor of that unit is the load factor of the entire run. The length of the run in feet and the load factor of the run should be used in the resistance equation on the next page to calculate the value on the right side of the equation.
Resistance Equation
R <
The required wire gauge should be chosen such that the resistance value is less than the value calculated in the resistance equation. Refer to the table below.
Wire Gauge Values
RESISTANCE (R) WIRE GAUGE
NOTE: All Cresnet wiring must consist of two twisted-pairs. One twisted pair is the +24V conductor and the GND conductor and the other twisted pair is the Y conductor and the Z conductor.
NOTE: When daisy-chaining Cresnet units, always twist the ends of the incoming wire and outgoing wire which share a pin on the network connector. After twisting the ends, tin the twisted connection with solder. Apply solder only to the ends of the twisted wires. Avoid tinning too far up the wires or the end becomes brittle. After tinning the twisted ends, insert the tinned connection into the Cresnet connector and tighten the retaining screw. Repeat the procedure for the other three conductors.

Identity Codes
The STRFGWX possesses two distinct types of identity codes: NET ID and RF CHANNEL. These codes are assigned to the unit from Crestron software.
Identity Code
Every equipment and user interface within the Cresnet system requires a unique NET ID. These codes are recognized by a two-digit hexadecimal number from 03 to FE. The NET ID of the unit must match an ID code specified in the SIMPL Windows program. The NET ID of the STRFGWX is factory set to 4F. The NET IDs of multiple STRFGWXs must all be unique and changed from a personal computer (PC) via SIMPL Windows or VT Pro-e.
NOTE: VT Pro-e is a Windows compatible software package for creating Crestron touchpanel screen designs.
The method for changing the unit’s NET ID is identical regardless of the software chosen. Complete the following steps to change the NET ID.
1. Attach one of the STRFGWXs to the control system (verify that the software is running).
2. From the SIMPL Windows or VT Pro-e menu, select Tools | Viewport to open the Crestron Viewport.
3. From the Viewport menu, select Functions | Set Network ID. The software checks the baud rate and then opens the “Set Network ID” dialog box.

To utilize firmware upgrade files, a STRFGWX with a firmware version earlier than 1.5.0 must be returned to Crestron. If the firmware of the STRFGWX is upgraded, the associated touchpanel(s) must also be upgraded.
