Introduction

The CEN-SWPOE-24 offers control system networking made easy, providing Crestron touchpanels, keypads, control processors, and other devices in a 2-space rack mount package. Rear panel connectivity and front panel controls provide an ideal form factor for use in a typical 19” equipment rack. Full IEEE 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) is furnished simultaneously across all 24 ports, providing a centralized power source for numerous PoE powered devices and eliminating the need for additional power supplies and wiring.
Dual Gigabit Ethernet uplink/stacking ports assure ample bandwidth for the 24 high-speed 10/100BASE-T ports. Its front panel management port enables mirroring of any rear port for easy monitoring and troubleshooting. Customizable front panel labeling makes it easy to designate each port with a friendly, descriptive name. Advanced configuration is enabled through an intuitive Web browser interface.

Setup

Network Wiring

When wiring the Ethernet network, consider the following:
Use Crestron Certified Wire.
• • Use Crestron power supplies for Crestron equipment.
Provide sufficient power to the system.
CAUTION: Insufficient power can lead to unpredictable results or damage to the equipment. Please use the Crestron Power Calculator to help calculate how much power is needed for the system (www.crestron.com/calculators

CAT5 Wiring

Category 5 (CAT5) wiring is a twisted pair cable designed for Ethernet networks. These networks operate at speeds of up to 100 Megabits per second (Mbps) using the 100BASE-T standard. For more information refer to “Appendix: Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet” on page 26.

Installation

The CEN-SWPOE-24 should be used in a well-ventilated area. The venting holes should not be obstructed under any circumstances.
To prevent overheating, do not operate this product in an area that exceeds the environmental temperature range listed in the table of specifications. Consider using forced air ventilation and/or incrementing the spacing between units to reduce overheating. Consideration must be given if installed in a closed or multi-unit rack assembly since the operating ambient temperature of the environment may be greater than the room ambient temperature. Contact with thermal insulating materials should be avoided on all sides of the unit.
The CEN-SWPOE-24 can be mounted in a rack or stacked with other equipment. Two “ears” are provided with the CEN-SWPOE-24 so that the unit can be rack mounted. These ears must be installed prior to mounting. Complete the following procedure to attach the ears to the unit. The only tool required is a #1 or #2 Phillips screwdriver.

WARNING: To prevent bodily injury when mounting or servicing this unit in a rack, take special precautions to ensure that the system remains stable. The following guidelines are provided to ensure your safety:
When mounting this unit in a partially filled rack, load the rack from the
bottom to the top with the heaviest component at the bottom of the rack.
If the rack is provided with stabilizing devices, install the stabilizers before
mounting or servicing the unit in the rack.
NOTE: If rack mounting is not required, rubber feet are provided for tabletop mounting or stacking. Apply the feet near the corner edges on the underside of the unit.
NOTE: Reliable earthing of rack-mounted equipment should be maintained. Particular attention should be given to supply connections other than direct connections to the branch circuit (e.g., use of power strips).
To install the ears:
1. There are screws that secure each side of the CEN-SWPOE-24 top cover.
Using a #1 or #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the three screws closest to the front panel from one side of the unit. Refer to the diagram following step 3 for a detailed view.
2. Position a rack ear so that its mounting holes align with the holes vacated
by the screws in step 1.
3. Secure the ear to the unit with three screws from step 1, as shown in the
following diagram.

opposite side.

Stacking
Four “feet” are provided with the CEN-SWPOE-24 so that if the unit is not rack mounted, the rubber feet can provide stability when the unit is placed on a flat surface or stacked. These feet should be attached prior to the hookup procedure. Refer to the following illustration for placement of the feet.

Make the necessary connections as called out in the illustration that follows this paragraph. Refer to “Network Wiring” on page 7 before applying power. Apply power after all connections have been made.
When making connections to the CEN-SWPOE-24, note the following:

The CEN-SWPOE-24 provides a Web-based configuration utility that can be accessed from a Web browser or from the Crestron Toolbox.

Accessing the Configuration Utility

NOTE: Configuration of the CEN-SWPOE-24 must be performed from a computer whose IP address is in the same IP subnet. The default configuration of the switch allows the IP address of the switch to be automatically assigned by a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server on the local area network. If a DHCP server does not exist on the network and two minutes have elapsed since the switch was powered on, the IP address of the switch defaults to 192.168.100.16 and the subnet mask defaults to 255.255.255.0.
You can access the configuration utility from a Web browser or from the Crestron Toolbox:
You can access the configuration utility from a Web browser if you know
the IP address or host name of the switch.
NOTE: The default host name of the switch is CEN-SWPOE-24.
You can access the configuration utility from the Crestron Toolbox if the
switch is configured to operate in DHCP mode (default configuration). The Crestron ToolBox automatically discovers the IP address of the switch. For additional information, refer to “Using Crestron ToolBox” on page 12.

Using a Web Browser

To access the configuration utility from a Web browser:
1. Start your Web browser.
2. Go to the IP address or host name of the switch.
NOTE: If the default Web management port number of 80 has been changed, you must append the port number to the IP address by entering a colon followed by the new port number. If, for example, the IP address is
192.168.100.16 and the Web management port number has been changed from 80 to 150, go to http://192.168.100.16:150.
The user name and password window opens, allowing you to log in to the switch. For log-in information, refer to “Logging In to the Switch” on page
12.

Using Crestron ToolBox

NOTE: To use Crestron Toolbox to access the configuration utility of the switch, the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Ethernet protocol configuration setting of the switch must be enabled. The UPnP protocol is enabled by default.
To access the configuration utility from Crestron Toolbox:
1. Open Crestron Toolbox.
2. From the Tools menu, select Device Discovery Tool.
NOTE: You can also access the Device Discovery Tool by clicking the
Device Discovery Tool icon ( ) in the toolbar.
NOTE: The security software running on your computer may send you a program alert regarding the attempt of Crestron Toolbox to connect to the network. You must allow the connection so that the Device Discovery Tool can be used.
3. From the device list on the left side of the screen, select the UPnP name of
the switch. The default UPnP name is CEN-SWPOE-24.
4. The user name and password window opens, allowing you to log in to the
switch. For log-in information, refer to “Logging In to the Switch” below.

Logging In to the Switch

The user name and password window allows you to log in to the switch.

To log in to the switch:
1. Enter the user name and password. The default user name is admin, and the
default password is admin.
NOTE: The user name and password are case sensitive.
NOTE: For enhanced security, it is recommended that you change the
default user name and password. For information about changing the user name and password, refer to “Password” on page 16.
2. Click OK. The home screen of the switch opens, allowing you to select the
desired functions.

Navigating the Configuration Utility

The home menu provides six main selections: Home, Status, General, TCP/IP, Port, and Port Mirroring. The Status and General selections include the following
subselections.
The Status selection provides a subselection that allows access to the
System Log and Port.
The General selection provides subselection for the Password,
Management, Time Settings, and Firmware Tools.
The following illustrates the menu tree of the home menu.

Home

The home screen displays system information about the switch. It also contains a Restart button to restart the switch remotely. The following image shows an example of a typical system home screen.

The home screen displays the following information:
Product name: Displays the switch’s name.
Firmware version: Displays the version of the switch.
MAC address: A unique address assigned to the switch.
System up time (hr:min:sec): Length of time the switch has been up.
TCP/IP Settings:
NOTE: If the “TCP/IP Addressing” screen is set to Obtain from a DHCP Server, this section will state “Get from the DHCP server”. Refer to “TCP/IP”
section on page 22.
IP address: Displays the IP address assigned to the switch. The default IP
address is 192.168.100.16.
Subnet mask: Displays the address code that determines the size of the
network.
Default Gateway: Displays the address of the switch that forwards internet
traffic from your local area network.
Host Name: Displays the host name of the switch.

Advanced Settings:
Time zone: Displays the time zone setting of the switch.
SNMP: Displays the SNMP status, either Enabled or Disabled.
UPNP: Displays the UPNP status, either Enabled or Disabled.

Status

The Status selection displays system log information and the port status of all ports on the switch. Refer to the sections below for more information.
System Log
To view the system log information, click the Status selection and then click the System Log subselection. The “System Log” screen opens. The screen can be
viewed for troubleshooting purposes.

To view the configuration of the ports on the switch click on the Status selection, and then click on the Port subselection. The following image shows an example of the “Port Status” screen.

General

The General selection provides four subselections for Password, Management, Time Settings, Firmware Tools settings.
Password
To configure user name and password settings, click the General selection and then click the Password subselection. The “Password” screen opens.

For security reasons the username and password should be changed for the switch. Refer to the configuration guidelines that follow when setting up a new username and password.
NOTE: The user name and password are case sensitive.
Current user: Displays the current username of the switch.
Old password: Enter the old password.
New user name: Enter a new user name.
New password: Enter a new password.
New password again: Re-enter the new password for confirmation of the password.
Enter all information and then press the Save button, a login prompt will appear asking for the new username and password. Make sure to note the new user name and password.
Management
To manage the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), SNMP and Syslog remote logging configuration settings of the switch, click the General selection and then click the Management subselection. The “Management” screen opens.

UPNP
To manage the UPnP configuration settings select either of the following from the drop-down list:
Enabled: (Default setting) Allows the switch to transmit UPnP broadcast
messages. As a result, the Device Discovery Tool of the Crestron Toolbox can find the switch on the network.
Device friendly name: (Applicable only when UPnP is enabled) In the text box, enter a name for the switch to distinguish it from other devices that appear in the device list of the Device Discovery Tool. The default setting is CEN-SWPOE-24.
Disabled: Prevents the switch from transmitting UPnP broadcast messages
and therefore increases device security on an insecure network.
NOTE: Disabling UPnP prevents the Device Discovery Tool of the Crestron Toolbox from finding the switch on the network. As a result, the configuration utility of the switch can only be accessed from a Web browser.
NOTE: Disabling UPnP does not affect communication between Crestron devices and the control system.

SNMP
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a communication protocol designed specifically for managing devices on a network. SNMP is used to configure devices for proper operation in a network environment, as well as to monitor them to evaluate performance or detect potential problems.
Traps indicating status changes are issued by the switch to specified trap managers. You must specify trap managers so that key events are reported by this switch to your management station. You can specify up to five management stations that will receive authentication failure messages and other notification messages from the switch.
To configure SNMP, select either of the following from the drop-down list:
Disabled: Prevents the switch from being administered remotely via
SNMP.
Enabled: (Default setting) Allows the switch to be administered remotely
via SNMP.
Assign read-only or read-write privileges to the SNMP manager (applicable only if SNMP is enabled):
Read-only community: In the text box, enter a text string that functions as a
password to allow the SNMP manager to read configuration settings from the switch. The default setting is public. The read-only community text string appears as solid black circles.
Read-write community: In the text box, enter a text string that functions as
a password to allow the SNMP manager to read configuration settings from and write configuration settings to the switch. The default setting is private. The read-write community text string appears as solid black circles.
Syslog Remote Logging

Add entries to the SNMP Trap Table to send notification events from the switch to SNMP managers when a significant event occurs:
1. Click the checkbox to activate trap notification.
2. In the IP Address column, enter the IP address of the device to which the
switch is to send traps.
3. In the Community column, enter a read-only or read-write community text
string.
The Syslog sends critical logging information about the switch and connected devices to a remote server. To turn on this function select Enabled from the drop down menu and enter a server address in the Remote Logging Server field.
Click Save to save the changes, the switch must be restarted for changes to take effect. Click Save and Restart to save changes. Click Cancel to discard changes.

Time Settings
Time settings on the CEN-SWPOE-24 are managed by Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP), which allows the switch to set its internal clock based on periodic updates from a time server (SNTP or NTP). Maintaining an accurate time on the switch enables the system log to record meaningful dates and times for event entries.
To configure the SNTP server on the switch click the General selection and then click the Time Settings subselection. The “Time Settings” screen opens. Refer to the image on the following page for more details.

Enter the appropriate time information for the entry boxes:
Time zone: Select the time zone where the switch will be located.
NTP server: Enter the name of the time server.
Reboot function: Allows the switch to reset daily. Select either Enable or
Disable.
Reboot time: If Reboot function is set to Enable, enter the time of day
(using 24-hour clock) that you wish he switch to reboot.
Click Save to save the changes or Cancel to discard changes.

Firmware Tools
NOTE: Upgrading the firmware of the switch may cause a loss of the current configuration settings; therefore, be sure to back up the current configuration settings before upgrading the firmware. For information about backing up configuration settings, refer to “Configuration Backup” on page 21.
The firmware tools page allows upgrading, restoring, backing up and resetting the firmware back to factory defaults. To change firmware settings of the switch, click the General selection and then click the Firmware Tools subselection. The “Firmware Tools” screen opens. Refer to the image below for visual guidance.

Refer to the configuration guidelines that follow.
In the text box, enter the path to the filename containing the new firmware by clicking Browse… and selecting the firmware file from the Crestron website.
NOTE: Before upgrading the firmware, be sure to read the release notes.
Click Upgrade to start the firmware upgrade process. The switch reboots automatically when the upgrade is complete.
If necessary, you can restore previous switch configuration settings from your PC.
To restore previous configuration settings, click the General selection and then click the Firmware Tools subselection. The “Firmware Tools” screen opens.
In the text box, enter the path to the filename containing previous configuration settings by clicking Browse… and selecting the configuration file from your computer’s hard drive.
Click Restore to start the configuration restore process. The switch reboots automatically when the configuration restore process is complete.

Configuration Reset (Factory Defaults)
You can back up the file containing current configuration settings of the switch to your computer’s hard drive. The default configuration filename is config.bin.
To back up current configuration settings, click the General selection and then click the Firmware Tools subselection. The “Firmware Tools” screen opens.
Back up the current configuration as follows:
1. Click Back Up to open the “File Download” window.
2. Click Save to open the “Save As” window.
3. Navigate to the location on your hard drive to which you want to save the
configuration file.
4. (Optional) In the File name text box, enter a new file name if desired.
5. Click Save to open the “Download Complete” window and save the file.
6. When the download is complete, click Close.
You can then load the configuration file to any CEN-SWPOE-24 switch by performing the configuration restore process discussed in “Configuration Restore” section on page 20.
To restore factory default configuration settings of the switch, click the General selection and then click the Firmware Tools subselection. The “Firmware Tools” screen opens.
Click Reset to restore factory default settings.
Click Reset But Keep Network Settings to restore factory default settings
except the network settings.
NOTE: The switch restarts to allow the factory default settings to take effect. After 15-20 seconds, the home screen opens to allow you to review the settings.

TCP/IP

The default IP of the CEN-SW-POE-26 is 192.168.100.16 and the login ID is admin and the password is admin. To manually configure IP settings, you need to set an IP address and subnet mask that is compatible with your network. You may also need to establish a default gateway between the switch and management stations that exist on another network segment. An IP address may be used for management access to the switch over your network. To edit the TCP/IP settings, click the TCP/IP selection. The “TCP/IP Addressing” screen opens, as shown in the illustration below.

The “TCP/IP Addressing” screen displays the following information.
Method of obtaining an IP address: Either obtain the IP by Set Manually
(Static), or Obtain from a DHCP Server (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). If DHCP is enabled, IP will not function until a reply has been received from the server. Requests will be broadcast periodically by the switch for an IP address. DHCP values can include the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.
IP address: Address of the VLAN interface that is allowed management
access. Valid IP addresses consist of four numbers, 0 to 255, separated by periods (default is 192.168.100.16).
Subnet mask: This mask identifies the host address bits used for routing to
specific subnets (default is 255.255.255.0).
Default gateway: IP address of the gateway router between this device and
management stations that exist on other network segments (default is
192.168.100.254).
Host name: Specifies the name of the switch. Enter the name into the field
provided, up to 255 characters long (default is CEN-SWPOE-24).
DNS suffix: Fully qualified domain name consisting of the hostname and
the DNS suffix.
Click Save to save your configuration, the switch must be restarted later for the changes to take effect. Click Save and Restart to save your configuration and restart the switch, or press Cancel to revert to previously established settings.

Port

The switch can be set to manually configure the speed, duplex mode, and flow control used on specific ports, or use auto-negotiation to detect the connection settings used by the attached device. Use the full-duplex mode on ports whenever possible to double the throughput of switch connections. Flow control should also be enabled to control network traffic during periods of congestion and prevent the loss of packets when port buffer thresholds are exceeded. The switch supports flow control based on the IEEE 802.3x standard.
To configure the ports on the switch click the Port selection. The “Port” screen opens. Refer to the image below for visual guidance.

Port Settings
This screen allows you to edit the current Port Setting, including Speed/Duplex and Flow Control; the screen also displays the Link Status.
This screen also allows you to edit the PoE setting by selecting the status of the ALL PoE Ports drop down and the Mode drop down selections. The status of the port can
also be viewed.
The Port Setting column displays the following information for each port on the switch.
Port: Display port number 1 to 24 and uplink Gigabits port 25 and 26.
Speed/Duplex: Select the speed of the port:
Auto: Detects the speed of the connected device and assigns the correct speed and duplex to the port.
10M Half: Enables 10 Mbps half-duplex operation.
10M Full: Enables 10 Mbps full-duplex operation.
100M Half: Enables 100 Mbps half-duplex operation.
100M Full: Enables 100 Mbps full-duplex operation.
1000M Half: Enables 1000 Mbps half-duplex operation (port 25 and 26 only).
1000M Full: Supports 1000 Mbps full-duplex operation (port 25 and 26 only).

Flow Control: Select IEEE 802.3x function by Enable or Disable.
Link Status: Indicates the link status, Down is no connection.
PoE Settings
The PoE Setting column displays the following information for each port on the switch.
All PoE Ports: Select Enable (default setting) to allow the switch to
provide power to all PoE ports on the switch. Select Disable to turn off power to all ports.
Mode: Select Auto (Default setting) to allow the switch to enable or disable
power to the port. Select Shutdown to remove power from the port. The Status column displays the power status to the port; either On or Off.
Click Save to save your configuration.

Port Mirroring

The switch can mirror traffic from any source port to the MGMT port for real-time analysis. It can then attach a logic analyzer or RMON probe to the target port and study the traffic crossing the source port in an unobtrusive manner.
NOTE: Monitor port speed should match or exceed source port speed, otherwise traffic may be dropped from the monitor port.
All mirror sessions have to share the same destination port.
To configure port mirroring in your network, click the Port Mirroring selection. The “Port Mirroring” screen opens.
Set the following attributes for port mirroring using the “Port Mirroring” screen.
Source Port: Select the port whose traffic will be monitored.
Method: Allows you to select which traffic to mirror to the target port,
Disable, Rx, Tx or Tx & Rx (input and output).
Specify the Source Port and the Method that the ports will be mirrored, then click Save.

To enable port mirroring press the recessed MGMT PORT MIRROR button. All ports selected in the “Port Mirroring” screen will be mirrored to the MGMT port. The MGMT PORT MIRROR LED will illuminate. Click Save to save your configuration.

Appendix: Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet

About Fast Ethernet

As the demand for desktop video, multimedia development, imaging, and other speed-intensive applications continues to rise, the need for high performance, fault tolerant LAN technology will become more critical.
Standard Ethernet, which has been the most popular networking technology to date with a maximum data throughput of 10 Mbps (Megabits per second), is becoming insufficient to handle the latest video, multimedia, and other speed intensive client/server LAN applications.
Among the solutions to the problem of network speed, Fast Ethernet has emerged as the most viable and economical. Capable of sending and receiving data at 100Mbps, it is more than fast enough to handle even the most demanding video and other real-time applications.
Although there are a number of different competing Fast Ethernet implementations, 100BASE-TX is by far the most popular. Operating on two pairs of Category 5 (CAT5) unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cabling, 100BASE-TX supports high speed signaling and is relatively inexpensive. Because it uses four wires for data transmission and the same packet format, packet length, error control, and management information as 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX can be made to communicate with slower 10BASE-T equipment when routed through a switch.
This backwards compatibility is one of 100BASE-TX’s major advantages over other forms of Fast Ethernet; it allows critical, speed dependent network segments to be upgraded to 100BASE-TX speeds as needed without re-wiring, refitting, and retraining an entire site. Networks can now mix both slow and fast network segments for different users or departments.

About Gigabit Ethernet

Gigabit Ethernet runs at speeds of 1 Gbps (Gigabit per second), ten times faster than 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet, but it still integrates seamlessly with 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet hardware. Users can connect Gigabit Ethernet hardware with either fiber optic cabling or copper CAT5 cabling, with fiber optics more suited for network backbones. As the new Gigabit standard gradually integrates into existing networks, current computer applications will enjoy faster access time for network data, hardware, and Internet connections.

Return and Warranty Policies

Merchandise Returns / Repair Service
1. No merchandise may be returned for credit, exchange or service without prior authorization
from CRESTRON. To obtain warranty service for CRESTRON products, contact an authorized CRESTRON dealer. Only authorized CRESTRON dealers may contact the factory and request an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) number. Enclose a note specifying the nature of the problem, name and phone number of contact person, RMA number and return address.
2. Products may be returned for credit, exchange or service with a CRESTRON Return
Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number. Authorized returns must be shipped freight prepaid to CRESTRON, 6 Volvo Drive, Rockleigh, N.J. or its authorized subsidiaries, with RMA number clearly marked on the outside of all cartons. Shipments arriving freight collect or without an RMA number shall be subject to refusal. CRESTRON reserves the right in its sole and absolute discretion to charge a 15% restocking fee plus shipping costs on any products returned with an RMA.
3. Return freight charges following repair of items under warranty shall be paid by CRESTRON,
shipping by standard ground carrier. In the event repairs are found to be non-warranty, return freight costs shall be paid by the purchaser.
CRESTRON Limited Warranty
CRESTRON ELECTRONICS, Inc. warrants its products to be free from manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship under normal use for a period of three (3) years from the date of purchase from CRESTRON, with the following exceptions: disk drives and any other moving or rotating mechanical parts, pan/tilt heads and power supplies are covered for a period of one (1) year; touchscreen display and overlay components are covered for 90 days; batteries and incandescent lamps are not covered.
This warranty extends to products purchased directly from CRESTRON or an authorized CRESTRON dealer. Purchasers should inquire of the dealer regarding the nature and extent of the dealer’s warranty, if any.
CRESTRON shall not be liable to honor the terms of this warranty if the product has been used in any application other than that for which it was intended or if it has been subjected to misuse, accidental damage, modification or improper installation procedures. Furthermore, this warranty does not cover any product that has had the serial number altered, defaced or removed.
This warranty shall be the sole and exclusive remedy to the original purchaser. In no event shall CRESTRON be liable for incidental or consequential damages of any kind (property or economic damages inclusive) arising from the sale or use of this equipment. CRESTRON is not liable for any claim made by a third party or made by the purchaser for a third party.
CRESTRON shall, at its option, repair or replace any product found defective, without charge for parts or labor. Repaired or replaced equipment and parts supplied under this warranty shall be covered only by the unexpired portion of the warranty.
Except as expressly set forth in this warranty, CRESTRON makes no other warranties, expressed or implied, nor authorizes any other party to offer any warranty, including any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. Any implied warranties that may be imposed by law are limited to the terms of this limited warranty. This warranty statement supersedes all previous warranties.
