Ifthis Gas Hedge Trimmer is used for commercial application the warranty is void. This warranty does NOT cover:
1. Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as blades, starter rope, spark plugs, and filter.
2. Pre-delivery setup.
3. Customer negleot; operating Hedge Trimmer without proper fuel mixture.
Warranty service is available by returning the Gas Hedge Trimmer to the nearest Sears Service Centre/Department in Canada. This warranty applies only while this
product is in use in Canada. This warranty is in addition to any statutory warranty _nd does not exclude or limit
legal rights you may have but shall run concurrently with applicable provincial legisla-
tion. Furthermore, some provinces DONOTallow limitation on how long an implied warranty will last so the above ]imitations may not apply to you.

HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION
Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame (including smoking, open
flames, or work that can cause
sparks) in the areas where fuel is mixed, poured, or stored.
Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area;
store fuel in a cool, dry, well ver_lated place; use an approved, marked con-
tainer for all fuel purposes.
Do not smoke while handling fuel or
while operating the unit.
Do not fill fuel tank while engine is
running.
Make sure the unitis properlyas-
sembled and in good operating con-
dition,
Avoid spillingfuel or oil. Wipe up fuel
spillsbefore starting the engine.
Move at least t0 feet (3 meters)
away from fuel and fueling site before
starting engine.
Always store gasolinein a container
approved for flammable liquids.

MAINTAIN YOUR UNIT PROPERLY
Have ait maintenance and service not explained in this manual per-
formed by a Sears Service Centre.
Disconnect spark plug before per-
forming maintenance except for car-
buretor adjustments.
Do not use a cuttingblade that is bent, warped, cracked, broken, or
damaged in any other way. Have worn or damaged parts replaced by your Sears Service Centre.
Use only recommended Craftsman®
cutting blades and replacement
parts; use of any other parts may
void your warrantyand cause dam-
age to your unit.
Empty fue_tank before storing the unit. Use up fuel left in carburetor by starting
engine and letting it run unf_litstops.
Hand carry the unit with the engine
stopped and the muffler and cutting
blade away from your body.
Allow engine to cool, empty the fuel
tank, and secure the unit before stor-
ing or transporting it in a vehicts.
Do not store the unit or fuel in a
closed area where fuel vapors can
reach sparks or an open flame from hot water heaters, electric motors or
switches, furnaces, etc.
Store the unit so the cutting blade
cannot accidentally cause injury.
Store in a dry area out of reach of
children.

This engine is certifiedto operateon
unleaded gasoline. Before operation, gasolinemust be mixed witha good qualitysynthetic2_'ycli air-cooled engineoil.We recommendCraftsman brandsyntheticoil.Mix gasolineand oil
at a ratioof 40:1, A 40:1 ratioisobtained by mixing 3.2 ounces (95 ml) of oilwith 1
gallon(4 litres)of unleadedgasoline,

Once oil is added to gasoline, shake container momentarily to assure that the fuel is thoroughly mixed. Always read and follow the safety rules relalJngto fuel
before fueling your unit.
IMPORTANT
Experienceindicatesthat alcohol
blendedfuels (calledgasoholor using
ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separationand formation
of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of an engine white in storage. To avoid engine prob- lims, empty the fuel system before stor- age for 30 days or longer. Drain the gas
tank,startthe engine and let it run until thefuel lines and carburetorare empty.
Use fresh fuel nextseason.Never use engine or carburetorcleanerproductsin
thefuel tank or permanentdamage may
occur. See the STORAGEsection for eddiitonal information.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS IMPORTANT POINTS
Use the minimum throttle speed nec- essary to effectively cut hedges for optimal hedge trimmer performance.
Never attempt to use this hedge trim-
mer to cut hedges that have any branches with a diameter larger than
7/16" (1 cm).

STOPPING YOUR ENGINE
To stop the engine, move the ON/OFF switch to the OFFposition,
BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
Fuel engine. Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from the fueling site.
Hold the unit on the ground in the starting position as shown. Support
unit so the blade isoff of the ground and away from trees, bushes, on-
lookers, etc.

engine sounds as ifit is trying to run, but do not pull rope more than 6
times.
6. Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKEposition.
7. Pull starter rope sharply until the en- gine runs, but no more than 6 pulls. NOTE: If the engine doesn't start af-
ter 6 pulls (atthe HALFCHOKEposi-
tion), check to make sure the ON/
OFF switch is in the ON position.
Move the choke lever to the FULL
CHOKEposition and press the prim- er bulb 6 times; pullthe starter rope
2 more times. Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKEposition and pull
the starter rope until the engine runs, but no more than 6 more pulls.

8. Once the engine starts, allow itto
run 10 seconds, then move the choke lever to the OFFCHOKEposi-
tion.Allow the unit to run for 30 more seconds at the OFFCHOKE position
before squeezing and releasing the throttle trigger to release the throttle
lock. NOTE: If engine dies with the choke lever in the OFF CHOKEposi-

rope until engine runs, but no more
than 6 pulls.
STARTING A WARM ENGINE
1. Move the ON/OFFswitch tothe ON
position.
2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6 times.
3. Move the choke lever to the HALF CHOKEposition.
4. Engage the throttle lock as directed in STARTINGACOLD ENGINE,
NOTE: Keep the throttle lock engaged until the engine starts.
5. Pull starter rope sharply until engine runs, but no more than 5 pulls.
6. Allow the engine to run 10seconds, then move choke leverto the OFF
CHOKEposition.
7. Release the throttle lockby squeez- ing and releasing the throttle trigger.
NOTE: ff engine has not started, pull starter rope 5 more pulis. Ifengine still does not run, it is probably flooded. Pro-
ceed to STARTINGA FLOODEDENGINE. STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE
Flooded engines can be started by placing the ON/OFFswitch in the ON position and the choke lever inthe OFF CHOKEposition and engaging the
throttle lock as directed in the START-
INGA COLD ENGINEsection; then, pull
the rope to clear the engine of excess fuel, Starting could require pulling the
starter rope many times depending on
how bedly the unit isflooded. Ifthe unit still doesn't start, refer to the
TROUBLESHOOTINGTABLEor call
1-800-235-5878.

The warranty on this unit does not cov- er items that have been subjected to operator abuse or negligence, To re- ceive full value from the warranty, the operator must maintain unit as instruct- ed in this manual. Various adjustments will need to be made periodically to properly maintain your unit.

A dirty airfilter decreases engine per- formance and increasesfuel consump-
tionand harmful emissions. Always clean after every 5 hours of operation.
1. Clean the cover and the area around itto keep debris from falling
intothe carburetor chamber when
the cover is removed.
2. Remove parts as illustrated. NOTE: To avoid creating afire hazard or producing harmful evaporative emis- sions, do not clean filter in gasoline or
other flammable solvent.
3. Wash the tilter in soap and water.
4. Allow tiltarto dry.
5. Add a few drops of oil to the tilter;
squeeze filterto distributeoil.
6. Replace parts. INSPECT MUFFLER AND SPARK
ARRESTING SCREEN NOTE: THESPARKARRESTINGSCREEN
ONTHIS UNITISNOTSERVlCF_ABLE.
As the unit isused, carbon deposits
build up on the muffler and spark ar- resting screen. For normal homeowner
use, however, the muffler and spark ar- resting screen will not require any ser-
vice. After 50 hours of use, we recom-
mend that your muffler and spark ar- resting screen be replaced by a Sears
Service Centre.
REPLACE SPARK PLUG Replace spark plugeach year to en-
sure the engine startseasier and runs
better.Set spark plug gap at 0,025 inch (0.6 mm). Ignition timing is fixed, non-
adjustable.
1. Twist,then pulloff spark plug boot.
2. Remove spark plug from cylinder and discard.
3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y
spark plug and tighten securelywith a 3/4 inch (19 ram) socket wrench.
4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.
REPLACE FUEL FILTER
To replace fuel filter, drain unit by run-
ningit dry offuel, then remove fuel cap/ retainer assembly from tank. Pullfilter
from tank and remove it from the fuel
line. Installnew fuel fitter on fuel line; reinstallparts.

We recommend all service and adjust- merits not listed in this manual be per-
formed by your Sears Service Centre.
CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT
WARNING: Keep otbers away
when making idle speed adjustments. The blade will be moving during most
ofthis procedure. Wear your protective equipment and observe all safety pre-
cautions. When making adjustments,
use a screwdriver short enough to
keep your hands behind the hand- guard and away from the blade. After
making adjustments, the blade must not move at idle speed. The carburetor has been carefully set
at the factory. Adjustments may be necessary if you notice any of the fol- lowing conditions:
Engine will not idle when the throttle is released.
The blade moves at idle.
Keep others away when making idle speed adjustments. Make adjustments with the unitrestingon a level surface free of debris that can be caught in the

hedge trimmer blade. Serious injury to the operator and others can occur if the carburetor is not properly adjusted.
Keep all parts of your body away from
the blade and muffler.
Idle Speed Adjustment Allow engine to idle.Adjust speed until
engine runs without blade moving (idle toofast) or engine stalling (idle speed
too slow).
Turn idle speed screw clockwise to increase engine speed if engine
stalls or dies.
•Tum idle speed screw counterclock- wise to decrease engine speed if the
blade moves at idle.
_WARNING: Recheck the idle
speed after each adjustment. The
blade must not move at idle speed to
avoid sedous injury to the operator or
others,

4_WARNING: Perform the following
steps after each use:
Allow engine to cool, and secure the unit before storing or transporting.
Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated area where fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or open flames from water
heaters, electric motors or switches, furnaces, etc.
Store unit with all guards in place.
Position unit so that any sharp object
cannot accidentally cause injury.
Store unit and fuel well out of the reach of children.
SEASONAL STORAGE Prepare unit for storageat end of sea-
son or if itwill not be used for 30 days
or more.
Ifyour unitisto be stored for a period
of time:
Clean the entire unit,
Store in a clean dry area.
Clean allparts andcheck for damage.
Have damaged parts repaired or re- placed by yourSears Service Centre.
Lightly oil external metal surfaces, in- cludingthe blade.
To oil the blade:
Stop the engine and allow blade to come to a complete stop.
Ensure ON/OFFswitch is inthe OFF position.
Disconnect the spark plug wire.
Apply a light machine oil along the edge of the top strap as shown.

FUEL SYSTEM Under FUELINGENGINEinthe OPERA- TIONsection ofthis manual, see mes-
sage labeled IMPORTANT regarding the use of gasohol in your engine. Fuelstabilizerisan acceptablealterna- tivein minimizing the formation of fuel
gum depositsduring storage.Add stabi- lizer to gasolinein fuel tank or fuel stor- age container.Followthe mix instructions
found on stabilizercontainer.Run engine
at least5 minutes afteradding stabilizer, Craftsman 40:1,2-cycle engine oil (air cooled) is already blended with fuel stabilizer.If you do not use this Seers
oil, you can add a fuel stabilizer to your
fuel tank.

ENGINE
Remove spark plug and pour 1tea-
spoon of 40:1,2-cycle engine oil (air cooled) through the spark plug open-
ing. Slowly pull the starter rope 8 to
10 times to distribute oil.
Replace spark plug with new one of recommended type and heat range
(see REPLACESPARKPLUGsection).
Clean air filter.
Cheek entire unit for loose screws, nuts, and bolts. Replace any dam-
aged, broken, or worn parts.
At the beginning of the next season, use only fresh fuel having the proper
gasoline to oil ratio.
OTHER
Do not store gasoline from one sea-
son to another.
Replace your gasoline can if it starts
to rust,

Sears Canada mustwarrant the emla- sioncontrolsystem on your smalloff-
read engine for the periodsoftime listed below providedthere has been no
abuse, neglect,or impropermaintenance ofyour small off-read engine.Your emis- sioncontrolsystemincludespartssuch as the carburetorand the ignitionsys-
tem.Where a warrantableconditionex- ists,Sears Canada willrepairyour small
off-read engine at no cost toyou. Ex- ponees covered underwarrantyinclude diagnosis,portsand labor. MANUFAC-
TURER'S WARRANTY COVERAGE: if any emissionsrelated parton your en-
gine (as listedunder Emissions Control WarrantyParts List)isdefective or a de- fect inthe materials orworkmanshipof the engine causes the failure ofsuch an emissionrelated part, the partwillbe re- pairedor replacedby Sears Canada.
OWNER'S WARRANTY RESPONSI- BILITIES: As the smalloff-reed engine
owner,you are responsibleforthe per-
formance of the required maintenance listed in your instruction manual. Sears Canada recommends that you retain all receipts coveting maintenance on your small off-road engine, but Sears Canada cannot deny warranty solely for the lack of receiptsorfor your failure to ensure
the performance of allscheduled mainta- nance. As the small off-read engine owner, you should be aware that Sears Canada may deny you warranty cover-
age if your smalloff-reed engine or a port of it has failed due to abuse, ne-
glect, improper maintenance, unap- proved modifications, or the use of parts
notmade or approved by the original equipment manufacturer. You are re- sponsible for presenting your small off- road engine to a Sears Canada autho- rized repair centre as soon as a problem exists. Warranty repairs should be com- pleted ina reasonable amount of time, not to exceed 30 days. ff you have any

WARRANTY COMMENCEMENT BATE: The warranty periodbegins on
the date the small off-reed engine is par- chased. LENGTH OF COVERAGE:
Thiswarrantyshallbe for a periodof two years from the initialdate of purchase.
WHAT IS COVERED: REPAIR OR RE- PLACEMENT OF PARTS. Repairor re-
placementof any warranted partwillbe performedat no chargeto the owner at an approvedSears Canada servicing centre. Ifyou have any questJansregard- ingyour warrantyrightsand responsibili- ties,you shouldcontactyournearest au-
thorized service cenf_e or call Sears Canada at 1-800-469-4663. WAR-
RANTY PERIOD: Any warranted port which is not scheduled for replacement
as required maintenance, or which is scheduled only for regular lespection to
the effect of "repair or replace as neces- sary" shall be warranted for 2 years. Any warranted part which is scheduled for replacementas required maintenance shall be warrantedfor the period of time up to the first scheduled replacement point for that part DIAGNOSIS: The
owner shall not be charged for diagnos- tic laborwhich leads to the determination
that a warranted part is def_etive if the diagnostic work is performed at an ap- proved Sears Canada servicingcenlre.
CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES: Sears Canada may be liablefor damages to
otherenginecomponentscaused by the
failureofa warranted port still underwar-
ranty. WHAT IS NOT COVERED: All
failures caused by abuse, neglect, or im-

ADD-ON OR MODIFIED PARTS: The
useof add-on or modified partscan be groundsfordisellewinga warrantyclaim.
Sears Canada is not liabletocover fail-
