Always use two hands when operating the chain saw.
Contact of the guide bar tip with any object should be avoided. Tip contact may cause the guide bar to move
suddenIy upward and backward, which may cause serious injury.
Hearing protection should be worn,
_WARNING: When using electric gardening appliances, basic safety
precautions must always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and serious injury. Read and follow all instructions.
WARNING: Always disconnect
unit from power source when making repairs, adjustments, and when chang- ing accessories and attachments such
as saw bar, chain or guards.
Because a chain saw is a high-speed
woodcutting tool, special precautions must be observed to reduce the risk of
accidents. Careless or improper use of this tool can cause serious injury.
PLAN AHEAD
Restrict the use of your saw to adult users who understand and can follow
the safety rules, precautions, and op- erating instructions found in this
manual.
Dress properly. Wear protective gear. Always use steel-toed safety footwear with non-slip soles; snug-fitting cloth-
ing; heaw-duty, non-slip gloves; eye protection such as non-fogging, vented goggles or face screen; an ap-
proved safety hard hat; and sound barriers (ear plugs or mufflers) to pro-
tect your hearing. Regular users should have hearing checked regularly as chain saw noise can damage hear-
ing.

Keep all parts of your body away from the chain when the saw is run-
ning.
Keep children away. Do not let visi- tors contact chain saw or extension
cord. All visitors should be kept at least 30 feet (10 meters) away from
work area.
_. Safety Chaps
Do not handle or operate a chain saw when you are fatigued, ill, or upset, or
if you have taken alcohol, drugs, or medication. You must be in good
physical condition and mentally alert. If you have any condition that might be aggravated by strenuous work, check
with doctor before operating. Watch what you are doing. Use common sense.
Do not start cutting until you have a clear work area, secure footing, and especially if you are felling a tree, a
retreat path. Keep work area clean.
OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY
Do not operate with one band. Seri- ous injury to the operator, helpers, or
bystanders may result from one- handed operation. A chain saw is in-
tended for two-handed use.
Do not operate saw from a ladder or
in a tree.
Make sure the chain will not make contact with any object while starting
the saw. Never try to start the saw when the guide bar is in a cut.
Do not force chain saw. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for
which it was intended.
Do not put pressure on the saw, espe- cially at the end of a cut. Doing so can
cause you to lose control when cut is completed.
Stop the saw before setting it down.
Hand carry saw only when motor is stopped. Carry the chain saw by the
front handle with the saw stopped, fin- ger off the switch, the guide bar and
saw chain to the rear.
Use the right tool, cut wood only.
Don't use chain saw for purpose not intended; for example, do not use a
chain saw for cutting plastic, masonry, or non-wood building materials.
Do not operate a chain saw that is damaged, improperly adjusted, or
not completely and securely as-
sembled. Always replace bar, chain,
hand guard, or other parts immedi-
ately if they become damaged, bro-
ken, or are otherwise removed.
Inspect chain saw cords periodically and if damaged, have repaired by a

ELECTRICAL SAFETY
'_ WARNING: Avoid a dangerous environment. To reduce the risk of
electrical shock, do not use in rain, in damp or wet locations, or around swimming pools, hot tubs, etc. Do not expose to snow, rain, or water to avoid the possibility of electrical shock. Do
not handle extension cord or plug with wet hands.
Use a voltage supply as shown on the nameplate of the unit.
Avoid dangerous situations. Do not use in the presence of flammable liq-
uids or gases to avoid creating a fire
or explosion and/or causing damage to unit.
To reduce the risk of electrical shock, this appliance has a polarized plug
(one blade is wider than the other) and
will require the use of a polarized ex- tension cord. The appliance plug will fit
into a polarized extension cord only
one way. Ifthe plug does not fit fully
into the extension cord, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, obtain
a correct polarized extension cord. A
polarized extension cord will require
the use of a polarized wall outlet. This
plug will fit into the polarized wall outlet
only one way. If plug does not fit fully
into the wall outlet, reverse the plug. If
the plug still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper wall outlet. Do not change the equip-
ment plug, extension cord receptacle,
or extension cord plug in any way.
To reduce risk of electrical shock, use extension cords specifically marked as
suitable for outdoor appliances. The electrical rating of the cord must not be
less than the rating of the unit. The
cord must be marked with suffix 'MT".
Use a polarized cord. Make sure your
extension cord is in good condition.
Inspect extension cord before use and replace if damaged. Do not use a
damaged cord. Cord insulation must
be intact with no cracks or deteriora-
tion. Plug connectors must be undam- aged. An undersized extension cord
will cause a drop in line voltage result-
ing in loss of power and overheating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge.
The lower the gauge number, the
heavier the cord (see SELECT AN EX-
TENSION CORD in the OPERATION sec- tion). Do not use multiple cords.
Do not abuse cord. Never carry the
unit by the extension cord or yank
extension cord to disconnect unit.
Secure extension cord to power cord to prevent disconnection from unit.
Do not use the unit ifthe switch does
not turn the unit on and off properly,
or if the lock-out does not work. Re-
pairs to the switch must be made by
a Sears Service Centre.

Clear The Working Area
'_WARNING: Avoid kickback which can result in serious injury. Kickback
is the backward, upward or sudden for- ward motion of the guide bar occurring when the saw chain near the upper tip of the guide bar contacts any object such as a log or branch, or when the
wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in the cut. Contacting a foreign object in the wood can also result in
loss of chain saw control.
Rotational Kickback can occur when the moving chain contacts an
object at the upper tip of the guide bar. This contact can cause the
chain to dig into the object, which stops the chain for an instant. The
result is a lightning fast, reverse reaction which kicks the guide bar up and back toward the operator.
Pinch-Kickback can occur when the the wood closes in and pinches the
moving saw chain in the cut along the top of the guide bar and the saw
chain is suddenly stopped. This sud- den stopping of the chain results in a
reversal of the chain force used to
KickbackPath
Avoid Obstructions
cut wood and causes the saw to
move in the opposite direction of the
chain rotation. The saw is driven straight back toward the operator.
Pull-In can occur when the moving chain contacts a foreign object in the wood in the cut along the bottom of
the guide bar and the saw chain is suddenly stopped. This sudden stop-
ping pulls the saw forward and away from the operator and could easily cause the operator to lose control of
the saw.
REDUCE THE CHANCE OF KICK- BACK
Recognize that kickback can happen. With a basic understanding of kick-
back, you can reduce the element of
surprise which contributes to acci- dents.
Never let the moving chain contact any object at the tip of the guide bar.
Keep working area free from obstruc- tions such as other trees, branches,
rocks, fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate
or avoid any obstruction that your saw chain could hit while cutting.
When cutting a branch, do not let the guide bar contact another branch or other objects around it.
Keep saw chain sharp and properly tensioned. A loose or dull chain can
increase the chance of kickback.
Follow manufacturer's chain sharp- ening and maintenance instructions. Check tension at regular intervals,
but never with engine running. Make sure bar mounting nuts are securely
tightened.
Begin and continue cutting at full speed. If the chain is moving at a slower speed, there is greater
chance of kickback occurring.
Use extreme caution when re-enter-
ing a cut.
Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of the bar (plunge cuts).
Watch for shifting logs or other ob- jects that could close a cut and pinch
or fall onto chain.
Use the specified Reduced-Kickback
Guide Bar and Low Kickback Chain.
Avoid Pinch-Kickback:
Be extremely aware of situations or obstructions that can cause material
to pinch the top of or otherwise stop the chain.
Do not cut more than one log at a time.
Do not twist the saw as the bar is withdrawn from an undercut when
bucking.

A good, firm grip on the saw with both hands will help you maintain control. Don't let go. Grip the rear
handle with your right hand whether you are right or left handed. Wrap the fingers of your left hand over and
around the front handlebar, and your left thumb under the front handlebar.
Keep your left arm straight with the elbow locked.
Position your left hand on the front handlebar so it is in a straight line
with your right hand on the rear han- dle when making bucking cuts. Stand slightly to the left side of the
saw to keep your body from being in a direct line with the cutting chain.
Stand with your weight evenly bal- anced on both feet.
Do not overreach. You could be drawn or thrown off balance and lose control.
Do not cut above shoulder height. It is difficult to maintain control of saw
above shoulder height.
KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES
_WARNING: The following fea- tures are included on your saw to help
reduce hazard of kickback; however, such features will not totally eliminate
this danger. Do not rely only on safety devices. Follow all safety rules to
help avoid kickback and other forces
which can result in serious injury.
Hand Guard: designed to reduce the chance of your left hand contacting
the chain if your hand slips offthe front handlebar.
Position of front and rear handlebars: designed with distance between
handles and "in-line" with each other.
The spread and "in-line" position of the hands provided by this design work together to give balance and
resistance in controlling the pivot of
the saw back toward the operator if
kickback occurs.
Reduced-Kickback Guide Bar: de- signed with a small radius tip which
reduces the size of the kickback
danger zone. This type bar has been demonstrated to significantly reduce
the number and seriousness of kick-
backs when tested in accordance
with ANS! B175.1.

CHAIN BRAKE
Aid, WARNING: WE DO NOT REP-
RESENT AND YOU SHOULD NOT AS- SUME THAT THE CHAIN BRAKE WILL PROTECT YOU IN THE EVENT OF A KICK-
BACK. Kickback is a lightning fast action
which throws the bar and rotating chain
back and up toward the operator. Kick- back can be caused by allowing contact
of the bar tip in the danger zone with any hard object. Kickback can also be caused by pinching the saw chain along
the top of the guide bar. This action
may push the guide bar rapidly back to-
ward the operator. Either of these
events may cause you to lose control of
the saw which could result in serious in- jury or even death. DO NOT RELYUPON
ANY OF THE SAFETY DEVICES BUILT
INTOYOUR SAW. YOU SHOULD USE THE SAW PROPERLY AND CAREFULLY TO
AVOID KICKBACK. Reduced-kickback
guide bars and low-kickback saw chains reduce the chance and magni-
tude of kickback and are recommended. Your saw has a low kickback chain and
bar as original equipment. If the brake band is worn too thin it may break when
the chain brake is triggered. With a bro-
ken brake band, the chain brake will not stop the chain. The chain brake must be
replaced if any part is worn to less than 1/32" thick. Repairs on a chain brake
should be made by your Sears Service Centre. Take your unit to the place of purchase or to the nearest Sears Ser-
vice Centre.
This saw is equipped with a chain brake. The brake is designed to stop
the chain if kickback occurs.
The inertia-activated chain brake is
activated if the front hand guard is
pushed forward, either manually (by hand) or automatically (by sudden movement).

Braking function control
CAUTION: The chain brake must be
checked several times daily. The engine must be running when performing this procedure. This is the only instance
when the saw should be placed on the ground with the engine running.
Place the saw on firm ground. Hold the
handles with both hands and apply full throttle. Activate the chain brake by turn- ing your left wrist against the hand guard
without releasing your grip around the front handle. The chain should stop im- mediately.
Inertia activating function control _,WARNING: When performing the
following procedure, the engine must be turned off.
Hold the chain saw approximately 14"
(35 cm) above a stump or other wooden surface. Release your grip on the front handle and use the weight of the saw to
let the tip of the guide bar fall forward and contact the stump. When the tip of the bar hits the stump, the brake should
activate. OPERATING TIPS
Check chain tension before first use
and after 1 minute of operation. See CHECK CHAIN TENSION in the SER-
VICE AND ADJUSTMENTS section.
Cut wood only. Do not cut metal,
plastics, masonry, non-wood building materials, etc.
Stop the saw if the chain strikes a
foreign object. Inspect the saw and repair parts as necessary.
Keep the chain out of dirt and sand.
Even a small amount of dirt will quickly dull a chain and increase the possibility of kickback.
Practice cutting a few small logs us-
ing the following steps. This will help you get the "feel" of using your saw
before you begin a major sawing op- eration.
Squeeze the trigger switch and al- low unit to reach full speed before
cutting.
Begin cutting with the saw frame against the log.
Keep the motor at full speed the entire time you are cutting.
Release the trigger switch as soon as the cut is completed, allowing
the motor to stop.
Keep the cord away from the cut- ting area. Position cord so it will
not be caught in branches and the like during cutting.
To avoid losing control when cut is complete, do not put pressure on
saw at end of cut.
Stop motor before setting saw down.
TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES
Check for broken or dead branches
which can fall while cutting causing se-
rious injury. Do not cut near buildings or electrical wires if you do not know
the direction of tree fall, nor cut at night since you will not be able to see well,
nor during bad weather such as rain, snow, or strong winds, etc. If the tree
does make contact with any utility line,
the utility company should be notified
immediately.
Carefully plan your sawing operation in advance.
Clear the work area. You need a clear area all around the tree so you can
have secure footing.
The chain saw operator should keep on the uphill side of the terrain as the
tree is likely to roll or slide downhill after it is felled.
Study the natural conditions that can cause the tree to fall in a particular direction, such as:
The wind direction and speed.
The lean of the tree. The lean of a
tree might not be apparent due to uneven or sloping terrain. Use a
plumb or level to determine the di- rection of tree lean.
Weight and branches on one side.
Surrounding trees and obstacles.
Look for decay and rot. If the trunk is
rotted, it can snap and fall toward the
operator.
Make sure there is enough room for the tree to fall. Maintain a distance of
2-1/2 tree lengths from the nearest
person or other objects. Motor noise
can drown out a warning call.
Remove dirt, stones, loose bark,
nails, staples, and wire from the tree
where cuts are to be made.

FELLING LARGE TREES
(6 inches in diameter or larger)
The notch method is used to fell large trees. A notch is cut on the side of the
tree in the desired direction of fall. After a felling cut is made on the opposite
side of tree, the tree will tend to fall in the direction of the notch.
NOTE: If the tree has large buttress
roots, remove them before making the notch. If using saw to remove buttress roots, keep saw chain from contacting
ground to prevent dulling of the chain.
NOTCH CUT AND FELLING TREE
Make notch cut by cutting the top of the notch first. Cut through 1/3 of the
diameter of the tree. Next complete the notch by cutting the bottom. See illustration. Once the notch is cut, re-
move the wedge of wood from the tree.
Firstcut _ 2" _ Felling cut here
Secol_clcui j \ _._ Hinge
After removing the wood, make the felling cut on the opposite side of the
notch. This is done by making a cut about two inches higher than the
center of the notch. This will leave enough uncut wood between the fell-
ing cut and the notch to form a hinge. This hinge will help prevent the tree from falling in the wrong direction.

NOTE: Before felling cut is complete, use wedges to open the cut if neces-
sary to control the direction of fall. To avoid kickback and chain damage, use
wood or plastic wedges, but never
steel or iron wedges.
Be alert to signs that the tree is ready to fall: cracking sounds, widen-
ing of the felling cut, or movement in
the upper branches.
As tree starts to fall, stop saw, put it
down, and get away quickly on your
planned retreat path.
DO NOT use your saw to cut down a partially fallen tree. Be extremely cau-
tious with partially fallen trees that may
be poorly supported. When a tree
doesn't fall completely, set saw aside and pull down tree with a cable winch,
block and tackle, or tractor.
CUTTING A FALLEN TREE (BUCKING)
Bucking is the term used for cutting a
fallen tree to the desired log size. Ai_ WARNING: Do not stand on the
log being cut. Any portion can roll causing loss of footing and control. Do
not stand downhill of the log being cut. IMPORTANT POINTS
Cut only one log at a time.
Cut shattered wood very carefully;
sharp pieces of wood could be flung toward operator.
Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Never allow another person to hold
the log while cutting and never hold the log with your leg or foot.
Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs, and roots are tangled. Drag logs into a clear area before cutting them
by pulling out exposed and cleared logs first.
BUCKING TECHNIQUES
,_ WARNING: If saw becomes
pinched or hung in a log, don't try to
force it out. You can lose control of the
saw resulting in injury and/or damage to the saw. Stop the saw, drive a wedge of plastic or wood into the cut
until the saw can be removed easily.
Restart the saw and carefully reenter the cut. Do not use a metal wedge. Do
not attempt to restart your saw when it
is pinched or hung in a log.
