• To read proper level, tighten engine oil cap each time.
• Reinstall engine oil cap and tighten..
= After the first two (2) hours of mowing, change the oil,
and every 25 hours thereafter_ You may need to
change the oilmore often under dusty, dirty conditions.
OPERATION
GAS
• Fitlgasoline tank with fresh, clean, unleaded gasoline.
DO NOT USE PREMIUM GASOLINE.. BE CAREFUL
NOT TO OVER FILL TANK.
WARNING: Experience indicates that alcohol blended
fuels (catted gasoho/or using ethanol or methanol.) can
attract moisture which leads to separation and formation of
acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel
system of an engine while in storage., To avoid engine
problems, the fuel system should be emptied before stor-
age of 30 days or longer° Drain the fuel tank, start the
engine and let it run until fuel lines and carburetor' are
empty, Use fresh fue! next season., See Storage Instruc-
tions for' additional information.. Never use engine or
carburetor cleaner products in fuel tank or permanent
damage may occur.
TO START ENGINE
o Tostart acold engine, push prfmer five (5) tfmes before
trying to start,. Use a firm push_ This step is not usually
necessary when starting an engine which has already
runfor a few minutes..
° Push engine speed control lever tofast (,t_) position_
- Hold operator presencecontrol bardown to the handle
and pull starter handle quickly. Do not allow starter
rope to snap back..
• To stop engine, releaseoperator presence contro! bar.
NOTE: In cooler weather it may be necessary to repeat
priming steps. In warmer weather over priming may cause
flooding and engine wilt not start, if you do flood engine,
wait a few minutes before attempting to start and do not
repeat priming steps.
MOWING TIPS
o Undercertain conditions, such asvery tall grass, itmay
be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce
pushing effort andto keep from overloading the engine
and leaving clumps of grass clippings.
• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of cut
and raise the rear"of the lawn mower' housing one (1)
wheel adjuster setting higher than the front for better
discharge of grass..
o For better grass bagging and most cutting conditions,
the engine speed should be set inthe fast (_) posi-
tion_
• When using a rear discharge lawn mower in moist,
heavy grass, clumps of cut grass may not enter' the
grass catcher. Reduce ground speed (pushing speed)
and/or run the lawn mower over thearea a secondtime..
° tfatrail of grass clippings isleft on theright side ofa rear
discharge ;awn mower, mew in a cJockwise d_rection
with a small overlap to collect the clippings on the next
pass.
o Keep top of engine around starter clear and clean of
grass clippings and chaff.. This will help engine airflow
and extend engine life.
° Pores incloth grass catchers canbecome filled with dirt
and dust with use and catchers will collect less grass_
To prevent this, regutar(y hose catchers off with water

MULCHING MOWING TIPS
IMPORTANT: FOR BEST PERFORMANCE, KEEP
MOWER HOUSING FREE OF BUILT-UP GRASS AND
TRASH CLEAN UNDERS}DE OF MOWER HOUSING
AFTER EACH USE. SEE "CLEANING" tN CUSTOMER
RESPONSIBILITIES SECTION OF THIS MANUAL
= The special mulching blade wilfrecut the grass clip-
pings many times and reduce them in size so that as
they fall ontothe lawn theywill disperse into the grass
and not be noticed.. Also, the mulched grass wilt
biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn.
Always mulch with your highestengine (blade) speed
as this will provide the best recurring action of the
blades.
. Avoid cutting your lawn when it iswet. Wet grass tends
to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action.,
The best time to mow your' lawn is the early afternoon.
At this time the grass has dried and the newly cut area
will not be exposed to the direct sun.
° For best results, adjust the lawn mower cutting height
so that the lawn mower cuts off only the top one-third
of the grass blades (See Fig° 8). If the lawn is
overgrown it willbe necessary to raisethe height of cut
to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading
the engine and leaving clumps of mulched grass. For
extremeiy heavy mu_ching, reduce your width of cut,
mow slowly and raise the rear of the fawn mower one
wheel adjuster setting higher than the front,.
• Certain types of grass and grass conditions may re-
quire that an area be mulched a second time to
completely hide the clippings,, When doing a second
cut, mow across or'perpendicular to the first cut path.
• Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mow
north to south one week then change toeast towest the
next week. This will help prevent matting and graining
of the lawn.,

Some adjustments will need to be made periodically to
properly maintain your unit..
All adjustments in the Service and Adjustments section of
this manual should be checked at least once each season.
, Once a year, replace the spark plug, replace air filter
element and check blade for wear. A new spark plug

NOTE: We donot recommend sharpening blade- but ifyou
do, be sure the blade is balanced.
TO SHARPEN BLADE
Care should be taken to keep the blade balanced_ An
unbalanced blade will cause eventual damage to lawn
mower or engine_
• The blade can be sharpened witha file or on a grinding
wheel. Do not attempt to sharpen while on the mower.
° To check blade balance, drive a nailintoa beam or wall.
Leave about one inch of the straight nail exposed.
Place center hole of blade over the head of the nail.. If
blade is balanced, it should remain in a horizontal
position. If either end of the blade moves downward,
sharpen the heavy end until the blade is balanced
GRASS CATCHER
° The grass catcher may be hosed with water, but must
be dry when used.
• Check your grass catcher often for damage or deterio-
ration. Through normal use it wil! wear. If catcher
needs replacing, replace onty with a manufacturer
