cure,
STOPPING MOWER BLADES -
To stop mower blades, move attachment clutch controlto disengaged position (r_l).
Turn ignition key (F) to "STOP" position and remove key.Always remove keywhen
leavingtractorto prevent unauthorizeduse.
Never use choke to stop engine.
IMPORTANT: Leaving the ignition switch in any positionotherthan "STOP" will causethe
battery to discharge andgo dead.
NOTE: Undercertain conditions when tractor isstanding idle with the engine running, hot
engine exhaust gases may cause "brown- ing" of grass. To eliminate this possibility, always stop engine when stopping tractor on grass areas.
_lbCAUTION: Always stop tractor com-
pletely, as described above, before leaving
the operator'sposition.
TO USE THROTTLE CONTROL
Always operate engine at full speed (fast). . Operating engine at less than full speed

The cruise control feature can be usedfor forward travel only.
SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICS
The cruise control should only be used
while mowing or transporting on relatively
smooth, straight surfaces. Other conditions such as trimming atslow speeds may cause the cruise control to disengage. Do not use the cruise control on slopes, rough terrian or while trimmimg or turning.
With forward drive pedal (K) depressed to
desired speed, pull cruise control lever(J) up and hold while lifting your foot off the
pedal, then release the lever. Todisengage the cruise control, depress the brake pedal or tap on forward drive pedal.
TO ADJUST MOWER CUTTING HEIGHT
The position of the attachment lift lever (A) determines the cutting height.
Put attachment liftlever in desired cut-
ting height slot.
The cutting height range is approximately
1" to 4". The heights are measured from
the ground to the blade tip with the engine
not running. These heights are approximate and may vary depending upon soil condi-
tions, height of grass and types of grass
being mowed.
The average lawn should be cut to ap- proximately 2-1/2" during the cool sea-
son and to over 3" during hot months.

For best cutting performance, grass over 6" in heightshould be mowed twice, Make the first cut relatively high; the second to desired height.
TO ADJUST GAUGE WHEELS Gauge wheels are properly adjusted when
they are slightly off theground whenmower
is at the desired cuttingheightin operating position. Gauge wheelsthen keepthe deck in proper position to help prevent scalping
in most terrain conditions.
NOTE: Adjust gauge wheels with tractor on
aflat level surface, I. Adjust mower to desired cutting height

TO OPERATE MOWER Your tractor is equipped with an operator
presence sensing switch. Any attempt by the operator to leave the seat with the engine running and the attachment clutch engaged will shut off the engine, You must remain fully and centrally positioned in the
seat toprevent the engine from hesitating or
cutting off when operating your equipment
on rough, rolling terrain or hills.
1, Select desired height of cut with attach-
ment lift lever.
2. Start mower blades by engaging attach- ment clutch control.
TO STOP MOWER BLADES Disengage attachmentclutch control.

REVERSE OPERATION SYSTEM (ROS) Your tractor is equipped with a Reverse
Operation System (ROS). Any attempt by the operator to travel in the reverse direction with the attachment clutch engaged will shut off the engine unless ignition key is placed
in the ROS "ON" position.
_,WARNING: Backing up with the at- tachment clutch engaged while mowing is
strongly disco(Jraged.Turningthe ROS"ON", to allow reverse operation with the attach-
ment clutch engaged, should only be done when the operator decides it is necessaryto
reposition the machine with the attachment engaged. Do not mow in reverse unless absolutely necessary.
USING THE REVERSE OPERATION SYSTEM -

BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE
CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL
The engine inyourtractor hasbeen shipped, from the factory, already filled with summer
weight oil.
1. Check engine oil with tractor on level ground.
2. Remove oil fill cap!dipstick and wipe clean, reinsert the dipstick and screwcap
tight, waitfor a few seconds, remove and
read oil level. If necessary, add oil until
"FUL[_ mark on dipstick is reached. Do
not overfill.
For cold weather operation you should change oil for easier starting (See the oil
viscosity chart inthe Maintenance section
of this manual).
Tochangeengine oil, seethe Maintenance section in this manual.
ADD GASOLINE
Fill fuel tank to bottom of filler neck. Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regular
unleaded gasoline with a minimum of
87 octane. (Use of leaded gasoline will
increase carbon and lead oxide deposits
and reducevaive life), Do not mix oilwith gasoline. Purchase fuel in quantities that can be used within 30 days to assure fuel
freshness.
_CAUTION: Wipe offany spilled oil orfuel.
Do not store, spill or use gasoline near an
open flame.
IMPORTANT: When operating in tempera-
tures below 32°F(0°C), use fresh, clean winter grade gasoline to help insure good cold weather starting. CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels (called
gasohol or using ethanol or methanol) can attract moisture which leads to separation
andformation of acids during storage. Acidic gas candamage thefuelsystem ofanengine lows:

MOWING TIPS
Tire chains cannot be used when the mower housing is attached to tractor.
Mower should be properly leveled for best mowing performance. See '*TO
LEVEL MOWER HOUSING" in the Service and Adjustments section of this
manual.
The left hand side of mower should be
used for trimming.
Drive sothat clippings are discharged
onto the area that has already been cut. Have the cut area to the right of
the tractor. This will result in a more
even distribution of clippings and more uniform cutting,
When mowing large areas, start by turning to the right so that clippings will
discharge away from shrubs, fences, driveways, etc. After one or two rounds, mow in the opposite direction making
left hand turns until finished.
f
t
If grass is extremely tall, it should be mowed twice to reduce load and pos-
sible fire hazard from dried clippings.
Make first cut relatively high; the second
to the desired height.
Do not mow grass when it is wet.
Wet grass will plug mower and leave
undesirable clumps. Allow grass to dry before mowing.
wnen mowing to assure Deftermowing
performance and proper discharge of material. Regulate ground speed by selecting a low enough speed to give
the mower cutting performance as well
as the quality of cut desired.
When operating attachments, select a ground speed that willsuit the terrain
and give best performance of the at- tachment being used,
