Themotor/bladecontrolhandleis asafetydevice.Neverattemptto bypassitsoperation.Doingsomakesthesafety deviceinoperativeand mayresultin personalinjurythroughcontactwiththe rotatingblade.The motor/bladecontrolhandlemustoperateeasilyin bothdirectionsand
automaticallyreturntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
Do notchargethe mowerinrain,orinwetconditions.
Neveroperatethemowerin rainorwetgrass.Alwaysbesureofyour footing. A slipandfall cancauseseriouspersonalinjury.Ifyoufeel youarelosingyourfooting,releasethe motor/bladecontrolhandle
immediatelyandthebladewillstoprotatingwithinthreeseconds.
Mowonlyindaylightorgoodartificial light.Walk,neverrun.
Stopthebladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksor roads.
If theequipmentshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe motorand checkimmediatelyfor thecause.Vibrationisgenerallya warningof
trouble.
Shutthemotoroffandwaituntilthe bladecomestoa completestop beforeremovingthegrasscatcheror uncloggingthe chute.Thecutting
bladecontinuesto rotatefora fewsecondsafterthe motoris shutoff. Neverplaceanypartof thebodyinthebladearea untilyouaresurethe
bladehasstoppedrotating.
Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrailingshield,dischargecover, grasscatcher,motor/bladecontrolhandleor othersafetyprotective devicesinplaceand working.Neveroperatemowerwithdamaged safetydevices.Failuretodo so,canresultin personalinjury.
Only usepartsandaccessoriesmadefor thismachinebymanufacturer. Failureto dosocanresultin personalinjury.

Slope Operation:
Slopesareamajorfactorrelatedto slipandfall accidentswhichcanresultin severeinjury.Operationon slopesrequiresextracaution.Ifyoufeeluneasyon aslope,donotmowit.Foryoursafety,usethe slopegaugeincludedaspart ofthis manualtomeasureslopesbeforeoperatingthisunitona slopedor hilly
area.Iftheslopeis greaterthan15degrees,donotmowit. Do:
Mowacrossthefaceofslopes; neverupanddown. Exerciseextreme cautionwhenchangingdirectionon slopes.
Watchforholes,ruts,rocks, hiddenobjects,or bumpswhichcancause youto slipor trip.Tallgrasscan hideobstacles.
Alwaysbe sureofyour footing.Aslip andfall cancauseseriouspersonal injury.If youfeelyouarelosingyour balance,releasethe motor/blade
controlhandleimmediately,andthe bladewill stoprotatingwithinthree (3) seconds.
Do Not:
Do notmowneardrop-offs,ditchesorembankments,youcould lose yourfootingor balance.
Do notmowslopesgreaterthan15degreesasshownonthe slope gauge.
Do notmowonwetgrass.Unstablefootingcouldcauseslipping.
Service
Ifthe mower'sbuilt-inoverloadprotectionswitchfrequentlytrips, contact yournearestSearsServiceCenterforrepair.
Removekeyand storeidlelawn mowerindoorswhennotin use.Allow motorto cool beforestoringin anyinclosure.Lawnmowershould be storedindoorsin adry,high,or locked-upplace,outof reachof children.
Whenservicinguseonlyidenticalreplacementpartslistedinthis manual."Useof parts whichdo notmeettheoriginalequipmentspecifi-

Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertainthe bladeand all movingpartshavestopped.Removethe keyto preventaccidental starting.
Removekeybeforeservicing,cleaning,orremovingmaterialfromthe lawnmower.
Followinstructionsfor lubricatingand changingaccessories.
Keephandlesdry,cleanandfreefromoiland grease.
To reduceafirehazard,keepthe motorcoverfreeofgrass,leavesand debrisbuild-up.
Checkthebladeandmotormountingboltsatfrequentintervals forpropertightness.Also,visually inspectbladefordamage(e.g., bent,cracked,andworn). Replacebladewiththeoriginalequipment manufacturer's(OEM)bladeonly,listedinthismanual.
Maintainyourmowerwith care-- Keepmowerbladesharpandcleanfor best andsafestperformance.Mowerbladesaresharpand cancut,wrap the bladeor wearglovesand useextracautionwhenservicingthem.
Keepallnuts, bolts,andscrewstightto besuretheequipmentisin safe workingcondition.
Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheir properoperationregularly.
Neverattemptto makewheelorcuttingheightadjustmentswhilethe motorisrunning.
Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stopthe motor,removethe key,and thoroughlyinspectthe mowerforanydamage.Repairthedamage beforeoperatingthe mower.
Grasscatchercomponents,dischargecover,andtrailingshieldare subjectto wearanddamagewhichcouldexposemovingparts orallow objectsto bethrown.Forsafety protection,frequentlycheckcomponents andreplaceimmediatelywith originalequipmentmanufacturer's(OEM) partsonly,listedin thismanual.

REMOVING THE UNiT FROM THE CARTON
1. Cutthecornersof thecartonandlaythe sidesflatonthe ground. Removeall packinginserts.
2. Movethemowerandgrasscatcheroutofthecarton.
3. Makecertainthecartonhas beencompletelyemptiedbefore discardingit.
ASSEMBLING THE HANDLE
1. Removeanypackingmaterialwhichmaybebetweenupperand lowerhandles.
2. Looseneachhandknobfoundontheinsideofthe upperhandle.
3. Gentlylift andpivottheupperhandleintothe operatingposition asshowninFigure1.
6. Tightenstarknobssecuringlowerhandletohandlebrackets.See Figure2.Makecertainthelowerhandleis seatedsecurelyinto
thehandlemountingbrackets.

1. Liftreardischargedoor.

4. Removestarknobsfromhandlemountingbracketsand secure thelowerhandleontothehandlebracketsbyplacingthe lower holeofthelowerhandleontothe pinsofthehandlebrackets.
5. Securetheupperhandleandlowerhandlebytighteningthe handknobs. Eachcarriageboltmustbeseatedproperlyintothe squareholefoundintheplasticconnector.

CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
Thecuttingheightadjustmentleveris
locatedabovetherearleftwheel.See Figure6.
1. Pulltheleveroutandawayfromthe mower.
2. Movethe leverforwardorbackfor desiredcuttingheight.
3. Releaselevertowardsmowerdeck.
Donotatanytimemakeanyadjustmenttolawnmowerwithoutfirst stoppingmotorandremovingkey.
Neveroperatemowerunlessthehooksonthegrasscatcherare firmlyseatedonthepivotrodandthe reardischargedoorrestsfirmly againsttopofthegrasscatcher.
CONVERTING TO SIDE DISCHARGE
Toconvertto sidedischarge,makesuregrasscatcherisoff oftheunit. Replacetherearmulchingbaffleandclosereardischargedoor.To dischargegrasstotheside:
1. Lift mulchingplugontherightsideofmower.
2. Slidetwohooksofsidedischargechuteunderthe hingepinon themulchingplugassemblyandlowerthesidemulchingplug. SeeFigure5.

MOTOR/BLADE CONTROL HANDLE
Themotor/bladecontrolhandleisa safetydevice.Neverattemptto bypassitsoperations.

HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT LEVER
Thecuttingheightadjustmentleverislocatedabovetheleft rear wheel.Toadjustthe cuttingheight,refertotheAssemblySection.
BATTERY LEVEL INDICATOR
Thebatterylevelindicatorislocatedonthe motorcover.Theindicator showstheconditionofthebatteryand isonwhenthemotorison.The indicatorlitallthewayto therightindicatesthebatteryisfullycharged; astheindicatorislit moretowardtheleft,it indicatesthebatteryis discharging.SeeFigure7inset.
IMPORTANT:if thefarleftredlightilluminates,thebatterieswill needtobe rechargedbeforefurtheruse.Continuedoperationbefore chargingmayshortenthe lifeof the batteries.
CIRCUIT BREAKER RESET BUTTON
Themowerisequippedwitha circuitbreakerresetbutton,locatedon themotor/bladecontrol.Referto Figure7.Thiscircuitbreakerreset buttonmaypopoutwhentoo muchstrainisplacedonthe motor.Refer
to MaintenanceSectionto resetthisbutton.

CHARGING THE BATTERY
Chargethe mowerfor 14hours before initialuse. Chargemower indoorsina dryareaoutof theweather.DONOTchargeinrainorwet
locations. IMPORTANT:Useonly thebatterychargerprovidedwiththismower
(Partnumber725-04387). Plugthe batterychargerintothemowerfirst,andthenintoany
standard110/120volthouseholdelectricaloutlet.SeeFigure8 insetfor batterycharginglocationonmower.

STOPPING THE MOTOR AND BLADE
1. Releasemotor/bladecontrolhandletostopmotorandblade.
Thebatterycontainscorrosivefluidandtoxicmaterial- HANDLE WITHCARE.Keepawayfromchildren.Do notpuncture, disassemble,mutilate,orincinerate.Explosivegasescould bevented duringchargingordischarging.Useina wellventilatedarea,away fromsourcesofignition.
IMPORTANT:Alwaysrechargemowerfully.Thechargerisa two stagecharger.Thefirststage,equalize,suppliesahighervoltageto thebatteries.Thishelpsspeedchargetimeandbalancethecharge acrosstheindividualbatteries.Thesecondstage,float,suppliesa lowervoltage.Thispreventsthebatteriesfromexperiencing overchargingdamageandalso"topsoff" thebatterycharge. Dependingon batteryconditiontheequalizestagewillcompletein approximately8 hours.Whentheequalizestageis completethe charger'sgreenLEDwillstopblinking.Thisstartsthefloatstage. DuringthefloatstagethechargersgreenLEDwillbeoncontinuously. Thefloatstagewill"topoff"the batteriesinapproximately4-6 hours, again,dependingonthe conditionofthebattery.However,a full 14 hourchargeisalwaysrecommended.
NOTE:Itisrecommendedthatthemowerbechargedonceeverytwo monthsduringstorage.

USING YOUR LAWN MOWER
Theoperationofanylawnmowercanresultinforeignobjectsbeing thrownintothe eyes,whichcandamageyoureyesseverely.Always
wearsafetyglasseswhileoperatingthemower,orwhile performing an ad ustmentsorre arson t.
Besurethat lawnis clearof stones,sticks,wires,or otherobjects whichcoulddamagethelawnmoweror motor.Suchobjects couldbeaccidentallythrownbythemowerinanydirectionand causeseriouspersonalinjurytotheoperatorandothers.
If youstrikeaforeignobject,stopthe motor,andremovethekey. Thoroughlyinspectthemowerforanydamage,and repairthe damagebeforerestartingand operatingthemower.Excessive vibrationofthe mowerduringoperationisan indicationofdamage. Theunit shouldbepromptlyinspectedandrepaired.
Whenusingthesidedischarge,the mosteffectivemowingpattern isonethatallowstheclippingsto dischargetowardstheuncut partofthelawn.

DONOTusemowerintherain.

Fora healthylawn,alwayscutoffone-thirdor lessofthetotal lengthof thegrass.
Forbest results,do notcut wetgrassbecauseittendsto stick totheundersideof thedeckpreventingpropermulchingor dischargeofgrassclippings.Neworthickgrassmayrequirea
narrowercut.
