Double Insulated Lawn Mower
Doubleinsulationis a conceptinthesafetyofelectriclawnmowers,whicheliminatestheneedfor the usualthree-wire groundedpowercordand groundedpowersupplysystem.Whereverthereiselectriccurrentin themower,therearetwo completesetsof insulationtoprotecttheuser.All exposedmetalpartsareisolatedfromtheinternalmetalmotorcompo-
nentswithprotectinginsulation.
Servicingofa lawnmowerwithdoubleinsulationrequiresextremecareandknowledgeofthe systemandshouldbe
performedonlybyaqualifiedservicetechnician.Forrepairservicewesuggestyoutakethelawnmowertoyournearest authorizedservicedealer.Alwaysuseoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's(OEM)replacementpartswhenservicing.
CHILDREN
Tragicaccidentscanoccurif theoperatoris notalert tothepresence ofchildren.Childrenare oftenattractedtothemowerandthe mowing activity.Theydo notunderstandthedangers.Neverassumethat childrenwillremainwhereyoulastsawthem.
Keepchildrenoutofthemowingareaand underwatchfulcareof a responsibleadult otherthanthe operator.

OPERATION
General Operation:
Readthisoperator'smanualcarefullyinitsentiretybefore attemptingtoassemblethismachine.Read,understand,and followall instructionsonthemachineandin themanual(s) before operation.Keepthismanualinasafeplaceforfutureand regular referenceandfororderingreplacementparts.
Becompletelyfamiliarwiththecontrolsandtheproperuseof this machinebeforeoperatingit.
Whenusingelectriclawnmowers,basicsafetyprecautionsshould alwaysbefollowedto reducetheriskoffire,electricshock,and personalinjury.Thesebasicprecautionsincludethefollowing:
Thismachineisa precisionpieceof powerequipment,nota plaything.Therefore,exerciseextremecautionatalltimes.This machinehasbeendesignedtoperformonejob: tomowgrass.
Donot use itforanyotherpurpose.
Neverallowchildrenunder14yearsofagetooperatethis machine.Children14andovershouldreadand understandthe
instructionsandsafeoperationpracticesinthis manualandon themachineandbetrainedandsupervisedby an adult.
Onlyresponsibleindividualswhoarefamiliarwiththeserulesof safeoperationshouldbeallowedtouse thismachine.
Thoroughlyinspecttheareawheretheequipmentis tobe used.
Removeall stones,sticks,wire,bones,toysand otherforeign objectswhichcouldbetrippedoveror pickedupandthrownby theblade.Thrownobjectscancauseseriouspersonalinjury.
Planyourmowingpatterntoavoiddischargeofmaterialtoward roads,sidewalks,bystandersand thelike.Also,avoiddischarg-
ing materialagainstawallor obstructionwhichmaycause dischargedmaterialtoricochetbacktowardtheoperator.
Tohelpavoidbladecontactora thrownobjectinjury,stayin
operatorzonebehindhandlesandkeepchildren,bystanders, helpersandpetsatleast75feetfrommowerwhileit is in opera- tion.Stopmachineifanyoneentersarea.
Alwayswearsafetyglassesorsafetygogglesduringoperation
andwhileperformingan adjustmentor repairtoprotectyoureyes. Thrownobjectswhichricochetcancauseseriousinjuryto the
eyes.

Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fittingslacks andshirts.Shirtsandpantsthatcoverthearmsand legsand steel-toedshoesarerecommended.Neveroperatethismachine in barefeet, sandals,slipperyorlightweight(e.g.canvas)shoes.
Donotputhandsor feetnearrotatingpartsor undercuttingdeck. Contactwithbladecanamputatehandsandfeet.
A missingordamageddischargechutecancausebladecontact orthrownobjectinjuries.
Manyinjuriesoccuras a resultof themowerbeingpulledoverthe footduringa fall causedby slippingor tripping.Donotholdonto themowerifyouarefalling;releasethehandleimmediately.
Neverpullthemowerbacktowardyouwhileyouarewalking.If youmust backthe mowerawayfroma wallorobstructionfirst lookdownand behindto avoidtrippingandthenfollowthese steps:
Stepbackfrommowertofullyextendyourarms.
Besureyouarewellbalancedwithsurefooting.
Pullthemowerbackslowly,nomorethanhalfwaytowardyou.
Repeatthesestepsas needed.
Donotoperatethemowerwhileunderthe influenceof alcoholor drugs.
Stayalert-- Watchwhatyouaredoing.Usecommonsense.Do notoperatelawnmowerwhenyouaretired.
Themotor/bladecontrolhandleisa safetydevice.Neverattempt tobypassitsoperation.Doingsomakesthesafetydevice inoperativeand mayresultinpersonalinjurythroughcontact withtherotatingblade.Themotor/bladecontrolhandlemust operateeasilyinbothdirectionsandautomaticallyreturnto the disengagedpositionwhenreleased.
Neveroperatethemowerinthe rainor indampor wetgrass. Alwaysbesureof yourfooting. Aslipandfall cancauseserious personalinjury.Ifyoufeelyouarelosingyourfooting,releasethe motor/bladecontrolhandleimmediatelyandthebladewillstop rotatingwithinthreeseconds.
Mowonlyindaylightor goodartificiallight.Walk,neverrun.
Stopthemotor/bladewhencrossinggraveldrives,walksor roads.
If theequipmentshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stopthe engineandcheckimmediatelyfor the cause.Vibrationisgener- allyawarningof trouble.
Shutthe motoroff andwaituntilthebladecomesto a complete stopbeforeremovingthegrasscatcheroruncloggingthechute. Thecuttingbladecontinuesto rotatefora few secondsafterthe motoris shutoff.Neverplaceany partofthebodyin theblade areauntilyouare surethe bladehas stoppedrotating.
Neveroperatemowerwithoutpropertrail shield,discharge chute,grasscatcher,motor/bladecontrolhandleorothersafety protectivedevicesin placeandworking.Neveroperatemower withdamagedsafetydevices.Failuretodo so,can resultin personalinjury.
GroundFaultCircuitInterrupter(GFCI)protectionshouldbe providedon thecircuit(s)oroutlet(s)to beusedforthe lawn mower.Receptaclesareavailablehavingbuilt-inGFCIprotection
and maybe usedforthis measureofsafety. Topreventelectricshockuseonlywitha ULlistedextension
cordsetsuitableforoutdooruse,suchas TypeSW-A,SOW-A,
STW-A,STOW-A,SJW-A,SJOW-A,SJTW-A,orSJTOW-A. ExtensionCord--Make sureyourextensioncord setisin good
conditionandisheavyenoughtocarrythecurrentloadyourlawn
mowerwilldraw.If indoubt,usethenextheaviergaugecord.The
smallerthegaugenumber,theheavierthecord.Anundersized cordwillcauseadrop inlinevoltageresultinginlossof powerand overheating.

Toreducethelikelihoodofdisconnectionofthe extensioncordset fromthemower,besuretousethecordrestraintprovidedaswell
asa modern,tightlyfittingextensioncord.
Toreducetheriskof electricshock,this lawnmowerhasa
polarizedplug(onebladeiswiderthantheother)andwillrequire theuseof a polarizedextensioncord.Themowerplugwill only fit into thepolarizedextensioncordoneway.Iftheplugdoes not fit fullyintotheextensioncord,reversetheplug.Ifthe plugstill doesnotfit, obtaina correctpolarizedextensioncord.A polarized extensioncordwill requiretheuseofa polarizedwalloutlet.This
plugwillfit intothepolarizedoutletonlyoneway.Iftheplugdoes
notfit fullyintothewalloutlet,reversetheplug.Iftheplugstill doesnotfit, contacta qualifiedelectricianto installtheproper walloutlet.Do notchangetheequipmentplug,extensioncord
receptacle,or extensioncordpluginanyway.
Ifextensioncordisdamagedinanymannerduringuse,discon- nectextensioncordfromhousereceptaclebeforeunplugging
mower.
CircuitBreaker/Fuses--Themowershouldbeoperatedona 15
AMPor 20AMPcircuit.If difficultyinstartingisexperiencedwith a standard15AMPfuseorcircuitbreakerorthemower'sbuilt-in
overloadprotectionswitchfrequentlytrips,contactyournearest authorizedservicedealer.Donotusea higherratedcircuit
breakeror fusewithoutconsultingyourpowercompany. Donot abusethecord by pullingthe mowerbythecordoryank-
ingittodisconnectit fromthereceptacle.Keepcordfromheat,
oil,andsharpedges.
Onlyusepartsandaccessoriesmadeforthismachineby manufacturer.Failuretodo socanresultin personalinjury.
Ifsituationsoccurwhicharenotcoveredinthis manual,usecare
andgoodjudgment.ContactCustomerSupportforassistanceor thenameof thenearestservicedealer.

SRope Operation: Slopesareamajorfactor relatedto slipandfall accidentswhichcan
resultinsevereinjury.Operationonslopesrequiresextracaution.If youfeel uneasyona slope,do notmowit. Foryoursafety,usethe slopegaugeincludedas partof this manualtomeasureslopesbefore operatingthis machineon a slopedorhillyarea. Ifthe slopeisgreater than15degrees,donotmowit.
Do:
1. Mowacrossthe faceofslopes;neverup anddown.Exercise extremecautionwhenchangingdirectionon slopes.
2. Watchforholes,ruts,rocks,hiddenobjects,or bumpswhichcan causeyouto slipor trip.Tallgrasscan hideobstacles.
3. Alwaysbesureof yourfooting.Aslipandfallcancauseserious personalinjury.Ifyoufeelyouare losingyourbalance,release themotor/bladecontrolhandleimmediately,andthebladewill stoprotatingwithinthree(3) seconds.
DoNot:
1. Donotmowneardrop-offs,ditchesorembankments,youcould loseyourfootingor balance.
2. Donotmowslopesgreaterthan 15degreesasshownonthe slopegauge.
3. Donotmowonwetgrass.Unstablefootingcouldcauseslipping.
SERVICE
Whenservicingmower,useoriginalequipmentmanufacturer (OEM)replacementpartslistedinthis manual."Useof parts whichdonotmeettheoriginalequipmentspecificationsmaylead to improperperformanceandcompromisesafety!"
Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,makecertaintheblade andall movingpartshavestopped.Disconnectthe powercord whennotin useandto preventunintendedstarting.
Followinstructionsforlubricatingandchangingaccessories.
Inspectlawnmowercordandextensioncordsperiodicallyand
replaceimmediately,ifdamaged.Lawnmowercordshouldbe repairedbyanauthorizedservicedealeronly.
Keephandlesdry,cleanandfreefromoil andgrease.
Toreduceafirehazard,keepthe motorfreeofgrass,leavesand debrisbuild-up.
Checkthebladeand motormountingboltsatfrequentintervals forpropertightness.Also,visuallyinspectbladefordamage (e.g.,bent,cracked,andworn) Replacebladewiththe original equipmentmanufacturer's(OEM)bladeonly,listedin thismanual.
Maintainyourmowerwithcare-- Keepmowerbladesharpand cleanfor bestandsafestperformance.Mowerbladesaresharp andcancut,wrapthe bladeor wearglovesanduseextracaution whenservicingthem.
Keepallnuts,bolts,andscrewstightto besuretheequipmentis in safeworkingcondition.
Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheirproperoperation
regularly.
Afterstrikingaforeignobject,stopthe motoranddisconnect thepowercord.Thoroughlyinspectthemowerforanydamage.
Repairthedamagebeforeoperatingthemower.
Grasscatchercomponents,dischargecover,andtrail shieldare subjectto wearanddamagewhichcouldexposemovingpartsor allowobjectstobe thrown.Forsafetyprotection,frequentlycheck componentsandreplaceimmediatelywithoriginalequipment manufacturer's(OEM)partsonly,listedinthis manual.
Whennotin use,storelawnmowerindoorsina dry area,locked- up and/oroutofthereachofchildren.
Maintainor replacesafetyandinstructionallabels,asnecessary.
Accordingtothe ConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC) andthe U.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproduct hasanAverage UsefulLifeof seven(7)years,or 140hoursof operation.Atthe endof theAverage UsefulLifehavethemachine inspectedannuallybyanauthorizedservicedealertoensurethat all mechanicalandsafetysystemsareworkingproperlyandnot wornexcessively.Failuretodosocanresultinaccidents,injuries

REMOVING THE UNIT FROM THE CARTON
1. Cutthecornersof thecartonandlay the sidesflaton theground. Removeallpackinginserts.
2. Movethemowerandgrasscatcheroutof thecarton.
3. Makecertainthecartonhasbeencompletelyemptiedbefore discardingit.
ASSEMBLING THE HANDLE
NOTE:Removeany packingmaterialwhichmaybe betweenupper andlowerhandles.
1. Looseneachhandknobfoundon the insideofthe upperhandle.
2. Gentlylift andpivottheupperhandleintothe operatingposition asshownin Figure1.Makecertainthe lowerhandleis seated securelyintothehandlemountingbrackets.
3. Tightenstarknobssecuringlowerhandletohandlebrackets.See Figure2. Makecertainthe lowerhandleisseatedsecurelyinto

CUTTING HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT LEVER
Thecuttingheightadjustmentleverislocatedabovetheleft rear wheel.Toadjustthe cuttingheight,refertothe AssemblySection.
STARTING MOTOR
Avoidaccidentalstarting.Makesureyouarein theoperatingposition behindthemowerwhenusingit.Toavoidseriousinjury,theoperator andunitshouldbe ina stablepositionwhile starting.
Connecting to an Electrical Power Source
This mowershouldbeoperatedona 15or 20 AMPcircuit.If you
experiencedifficultyin startingwitha standard15AMPfuseorcircuit breaker,contactyournearestSearsor otherqualifiedservicedealer. Donot use a higherratedfuseorbreakerwithoutconsultingyour
powercompany.

STOPPING THE MOTOR
Thebladecontinuestorotatefora fewsecondsafterthemotoris shutoff.If motordoesnotcometo a stopwhenthe motor/blade
controlhandleisreleased,contactaSearsorotherauthorized servicedealer.
Releasetheblade/motorcontrolhandleto stopthe motorandblade.
USING YOUR LAWN MOWER
Besurethatlawnis clearof stones,sticks,wires,orotherobjects whichcoulddamagethelawnmoweror motor.Suchobjectscouldbe accidentallythrownbythe mowerinany directionandcauseserious
personalinjuryto theoperatorandothers.
Ifyoustrikeaforeignobject,stopthemotor,andunplugfromthe powersupplycircuit.Thoroughlyinspectthemowerforanydamage, and repairthedamagebeforerestartingandoperatingthemower.
Excessivevibrationofthemowerduringoperationisan indicationof damage.Theunit shouldbepromptlyinspectedandrepaired.
Topreventelectricshock,do notoperatethemowerin dampor wetconditions.
Alwaysstartfromthe pointclosesttothepowersourcewherethe cordisconnected.Nevermowaroundthelawnincircles;travel
backandforthacrossthelawn,startingfromthe pointclosestto theoutletandthenmovingawayfromtheoutletsothecordliesin thecut portionofthe lawn,out of theway.
Donotallowtheextensioncord to wraparoundtrees,shrubs or otherobstacles.When pickinguptheextensioncord,wind thecordina seriesof equalloopson eachsideofyourhandto
preventsnarling.
USING AS MULCHER
Formulchinggrass,removethegrasscatcheror sidedischargechute fromthemower.Foreffectivemulching,donotcutwetgrass.Ifthe grasshasbeenallowedtogrowinexcessoffourinches,mulchingis
notrecommended.Usethe grasscatcherto bagclippingsinstead.

1. Attachgrasscatcherfollowinginstructionsinthe Assembly section.Grassclippingswillautomaticallycollectinbagasyou runmower.Operatemowertillgrassbagis full.
2. Stopmotorcompletelybyreleasingtheblade/motorcontrol handle.Makesurethattheunithascometoa completestop.
3. Liftdischargedoorandpullgrassbagupandawayfromthe mowerto removethebag.Disposeofthegrassclippingsand reinstallthebagwhencomplete.
