INTRODUCTION
DOUBLE INSULATION is a concept in safety,in electric powertools,whicheliminatesthe need for the usualthree
wire groundedpowercord and groundedsupplysystem. Whereverthere is electriccurrentin thetoolthere are two
completesetsof insulationtoprotectthe user.All exposed metalpartsare isolatedfrom internalmetal motorcompo- nentswithprotectinginsulation.
RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS
1. KNOW YOUR POWER TOOL - Read owner's
manual carefully. Learn its applicationsand limita- tionsas well as the specific potential hazards re-
lated tothis tool.
2. GUARD AGAINST ELECTRICAL SHOCK BY PREVENTING BODY CONTACT WITH
GROUNDED SURFACES. For example: Pipes, radiators, ranges, refrigeratorenclosures.
3. KEEP GUARDS IN PLACE and Inworking order.
4. KEEP WORK AREA CLEAN. Clutteredareas and benches invite accidents.
5. AVOID DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENT, Don't use power tool in damp or wet locationsor expose to
rain. Keep work area well lit.
6. KEEP CHILDREN AND VISITORS AWAY. All visi- torsshouldwear safety glasses and be kept a safe
distancefrom work area. Do not let visitorscontact toolor extension cord.
7. STORE IDLE TOOLS. When not inuse toolsshould be stored in a dry, high or locked-up place - out of
the reach of children.
8. DON'T FORCE TOOL. It will do the job better and safer at the rate for which itwas designed.
9. USE RIGHT TOOL. Don't force small tool or at- tachment to do the job of a heavy duty tool. Don't
use tool for purpose not intended - for example -

shouldbe performedonlybya qualifiedservicetechnician.

Sears Storefor repair.Alwaysuse originalfactory replace- mentpartswhenservicing.
Don't use a circular saw for cutting tree limbs or logs.
10. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. No loose clothingor
jewelryto getcaught inmovingparts. Rubbergloves
and non-skid footwear are recommended when workingoutdoors. Also,wear protective hair cover-
ing to contain long hair and keep it from being drawn into air vents.
11. ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES. Everyday
eyeglasses have only impact-resistantlenses;they are NOT safety glasses.
12. PROTECT YOUR LUNGS. Wear a face or dust mask ifcutting operation is dusty.
13. PROTECT YOUR HEARING. Wear hearing pro-
tection during extended periodsof operation.
14. DON'T ABUSE CORD. Never carry tool bycord or
yank it to disconnect from receptacle. Keep cord from heat, oll and sharp edges.
15. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or a vise to hold
work. Both hands are needed to operate the tool.
16. DON'T OVERREACH. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Do not use on a ladder or
unstable support.
17. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE. Keep tools sharp
at all times, and clean for best and safest perfor- mance. Follow instructions for lubricating and
changing accessories.

18. DISCONNECT TOOLS. When not in use, before 29. servicing, or when changing attachments, blades,
bits,cutters, etc., all toolsshould be disconnected from power supply. 30.
19. REMOVE ADJUSTING KEYS AND WRENCHES. Form habit ofchecking to see thatkeys and adjust-
ingwrenches are removed from tool before turning iton.
20. AVOID ACCIDENTAL STARTING. Don't carry
plugged-in tools with finger on switch. Be sure switchIs off when plugging in.
21. MAKE SURE YOUR EXTENSION CORD IS IN GOOD CONDITION. When using an extension
cord, be sure to use one heavy enoughto carrythe current yourproduct willdraw. An undersizedcord 31.
willcause a drop in linevoltage resultingin loss of power and overheating. A wire gage size (A.W.G.)
of at least 14 is recommended for an extension 32. cord 100 feet or less in length. A cord exceeding
100 feet is not recommended. If in doubt,use the 33.
next heavier gage. The smaller the gage number, the heavier the cord.
22. OUTDOOR USE EXTENSION CORDS. When tool ,
is used outdoors, use only extension cords suit- 34. able for use outdoors.Outdoor appi'ovedcordsare
marked withthe suffix W-A, for example - SJTW-A or SJOW-A. 35.
23. KEEP CUTTERS CLEAN AND SHARP. Sharp cutters minimize stalling and kickback. 36.
24, KEEP HANDS AWAY FROM CUTTING AREA.
Keep hands away from cutters. Do not reach un- derneath work while cutter is rotating. Do not at-
tempt to remove material while cutter is rotating.
25. NEVER USE IN AN EXPLOSIVE ATMOSPHERE. Normal sparkingof the motor could ignitefumes.
26. INSPECT TOOL CORDS PERIODICALLY and if 37. damaged, have repaired at your nearest Sears
Repair Center. Stay constantly aware of cordloca- tion.
27. INSPECT EXTENSION CORDS PERIODICALLY and replace if damaged.
28. KEEP HANDLES DRY, CLEAN, AND FREE FROM OIL AND GREASE. Always use a clean
clothwhen cleaning. Never use brakqfluids, gaso- line, petroleum-based products or any strong sol- vents to clean yourtool.
STAY ALERT. Watch what you are doing and use common sense. Do not operate tool when you are
tired. Do not rush. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Before further useof
the tool, a guard or other part that is damaged shouldbe carefullychecked to determinethat itwill
operateproperly and perform its intendedfunction. Check for alignment of moving pads, binding of
moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting, and any other conditions that may affect its operation.
A guard or other part that is damaged should be
propedy repaired or replaced by an authorized service center unless indicated elsewhere in this
instructionmanual. DO NOT USE TOOL IF SWITCH DOES NOT
TURN IT ON AND OFF. Have defective switches replaced by an authorized service center.
Inspectfor and remove all nailsfrom lumberbefore
routing. DO NOT USE TOOL UNDER "BROWN-OUT" OR
OTHER LOW VOLTAGE CONDITIONS. Also, do not usewith any device that could cause the power
supplyvoltage to change. DRUGS, ALCOHOL, MEDICATION. Do not oper-
ate toolwhile underthe influence of drugs, alcohol, or any medication.
WHEN SERVICING USE ONLY IDENTICAL CRAFTSMAN REPLACEMENT PARTS.
POLARIZED PLUGS. To reduce the riskof electric shock, this tool has a polarized plug (one blade is widerthan the other). This plugwill fit in a polarized outletonlyone way. If theplugdoes notfit fully inthe
outlet, reverse the plug. Ifit stilldoes notfit, contact a qualified electricianto installthe properoutlet.Do not change the plug in any way.

Yournew routerhas advancedelectronicfeatures whichare designedto assistyouIngettingthe maximumusefrom your router.Bymakingproperspeedselections,yourroutercan beadjustedtoyourspecfic routingneeds. Thiseliminatesmuch
ofthe guessworkpreviouslyneededto performa givenjob. Boththe experiencedandinexperiencedrouterusersbenefit, obtainingprofessionallikeresultswithfewer job errors. The electronicfeatureof your routerintroducesthe flexibility of adjustingthe motorspeed to the requiredjob conditions. Speedcanbe setaccordingtotheapproximatecutterdiameteryouwill beusingand to thehardnessof thematedalbeing
cut. Also,thebestcutsare madewhenthe cutterisfed through the materialatthe properrate. Whenpossible,you should makepracticecutson a scrap pieceof woodto geta "feel"of howfast to"feed=your router.

"LOCK-ON" BUTTON
The switchof yourrouteris equippedwitha "lock-on"featurewhichis convenientwhenoperatingforextended periodsof time. To lockon,depressthe trigger,pushinthe lockbuttonlocatedon thesideof the handle,thenwhileholdingthelock
buttonpushedin, releasethetrigger.To releasethe lock,depressthetriggerand releaseit. See Figure1. VARIABLE SPEED
Yourrouterhasa variablespeedcontrolselectordesignedto allowoperatorcontrolofspeed andtorquelimits. See Figure
1. Toincreasethespeedandtorqueofyourrouter,turnthevariablespeedcontrolselectorto a highersetting.Turntoa lower
settingtodecreasespeedandtorque.NOTE: Ifyoudonotwanttousethevariablespeedcontrolselector,turntothe highest possiblesetting,andthe featurewillnotbe active.

WRENCH STORAGE AREA Yourrouterhas a wrenchstoragearea locatedonthe top
endcap portionof the motor housing. When installingor
removingcuttersremovethewrenchfromitsstoragearea. Properstorageof wrenchwhennot in use willhelpreduce
thepossiblilityoflosingwrench. See Figure 1. INSTALLING/REMOVING CUTTERS

2. Removedustbagfrom muter.
3. Removeoneofthe clearplasticchipshieldsfromrouter. To remove,pressontabs and pulloutward.
4. A spindlelock is located on the front of the motor housing.See Figure 1.To activate lock,pushspindle lockinand slideinto lockposition.

Placeyourmuterupsidedownontable,thenturncollet
nutwith wrenchuntil lockmechanismInterlocks.See Figure2. NOTE: Spindle lockisspdngloadedandwill
snapintopositionwhenlockmechanisminterlocks.
CHIP SHIELD
Clear plasticchipshieldsare installedonthe baseof your routerforprotectionagainstflyingdustand chips.The chip
shieldsaredesignedto fitthe frontand rearopeningsofthe
routerbase. See Figure1. If necessaryto remove,squeeze
tabs on each end and pull outward.To replace,squeeze tabsat each end, fit intothe opening,then release. FOR YOUR PROTECTION DO NOT USE ROUTER WITHOUT CHIPSHIELDS PROPERLY IN PLACE.

ofcutterintocollet.The shankofyour cuttershouldbe closetobutnottouchingbottomofcollet.
8. Tightenthecolletnutsecurelybyturningclockwisewith the wrenchprovided. See Figure 2. Put spindlelock back in unlock position. Otherwise, the interlocking mechanismofthe spindlelockwill notletyouturnyour
muteron.

The dustbagehouldbeinstalledbyslippingitwithatwisting
moUonovertheblowerexhaust.The bagshouldbeinstalled
withthezipperdownwhenrouterisinupdghtposition. The bag shouldbe emptiedwhenhalffull.
TO EMPTY BAG: Remove bagfromrouter,open zipperand shake outdust.
Occasionallyturn the dust bag insideout and brushthe accumulationof dustfromthe insideof the bag. This will
permitthe airtoflowthroughthe bag better.
