PREPARATION

Thoroughlyinspecttheareawherethe equipmentistobeused.

Removeall doormats,newspapers,sleds,boards,wiresandother

foreignobjects,whichcouldbe trippedoverorthrownbytheauger/

impeller.

• Alwayswearsafetyglassesor eyeshieldsduringoperationand whileperformingan adjustmentor repairto protectyoureyes. Thrownobjectswhichricochetcancauseseriousinjurytothe

eyes.

Donot operatewithoutwearingadequatewinteroutergarments.

Donot wearjewelry,longscarvesorotherlooseclothing,which couldbecomeentangledin movingparts.Wearfootwearwhich willimprovefootingonslipperysurfaces.

Usea groundedthree-wireextensioncordand receptacleforall

machineswithelectricstartengines.

Disengageall controlleversbeforestartingtheengine. Adjustcollectorhousingheightto cleargravelorcrushedrock

surfaces.

• Neverattempttomakeanyadjustmentswhileengineis running, exceptwherespecificallyrecommendedintheoperator'smanual.

Letengineandmachineadjustto outdoortemperaturebefore startingtoclearsnow.

SafeHandling of Gasoline Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextremecarein

handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableandthe vaporsare explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycan occurwhengasolineisspilled onyourselforyourclotheswhichcan ignite. Washyour skinand changeclothesimmediately.

• Useonlyan approvedgasolinecontainer.

• Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandother sourcesof ignition.

• Neverfuel machineindoors.

• Neverremovegascapor addfuelwhiletheengineis hotor running.

• Allowenginetocoolat leasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.

• Neveroverfillfueltank.Fill tankto nomorethan1/2inchbelow bottomoffillerneckto providespaceforfuelexpansion.

• Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.

• Ifgasolineisspilled,wipe itoff theengineandequipment.Move machinetoanotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingthe engine.

• Neverstorethe machineorfuelcontainerinsidewherethereis an openflame,sparkor pilotlight(e.g.furnace,waterheater,space

heater,clothesdryeretc.).

• Allowmachinetocool atleast5 minutesbeforestoring.

• Neverfill containersinsidea vehicleor ona truckor trailerbed witha plasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthegroundaway

fromyourvehiclebeforefilling.

• If possible,removegas-poweredequipmentfromthe truckor trailerandrefuelitonthe ground.Ifthisisnot possible,thenrefuel suchequipmenton a trailerwitha portablecontainer,ratherthan froma gasolinedispensernozzle.

• Keepthe nozzlein contactwiththe rimofthefueltankor containeropeningatalltimes untilfuelingiscomplete.Donot use a nozzlelock-opendevice.

OPERATION

• Do notputhandsorfeetnear rotatingparts,intheauger/impeller housingorchuteassembly.Contactwiththerotatingpartscan amputatehandsandfeet.

• Theauger/impellercontrolleveris a safetydevice.Neverbypass itsoperation.Doingsomakesthe machineunsafeandmaycause personalinjury.

• Thecontrolleversmustoperateeasilyin bothdirectionsand automaticallyreturntothe disengagedpositionwhenreleased.

• Neveroperatewitha missingordamagedchuteassembly.Keep all safetydevicesinplaceandworking.

• Neverrunanengineindoorsor ina poorlyventilatedarea.Engine exhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,anodorlessanddeadlygas.

• Do notoperatemachinewhileundertheinfluenceofalcoholor drugs.

• Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcan causea burn.Donot touch.Keepchildrenaway.

• Exerciseextremecautionwhenoperatingon orcrossinggravel surfaces.Stayalertforhiddenhazardsortraffic.

Exercisecautionwhenchangingdirectionandwhileoperatingon

slopes.Do notoperateon steepslopes.

Planyoursnow-throwingpatternto avoiddischargetowards windows,walls,carsetc. Thus,avoidingpossibleproperty damageorpersonalinjurycausedby a ricochet.

Neverdirectdischargeatchildren,bystandersand petsor allow anyoneinfrontof themachine.

Donot overloadmachinecapacitybyattemptingtoclearsnowat toofastof a rate.

Neveroperatethismachinewithoutgoodvisibilityorlight.Always be sureofyourfootingandkeepafirmholdon thehandles.Walk,

neverrun.

Disengagepowerto theauger/impellerwhentransportingornot in use.

Neveroperatemachineathightransportspeedsonslippery surfaces.Lookdownand behindand usecarewhenbackingup.

Ifthemachineshouldstartto vibrateabnormally,stoptheengine, disconnectthesparkplugwire andgrounditagainsttheengine.

Inspectthoroughlyfordamage.Repairanydamagebefore startingandoperating.

Disengageall controlleversandstopenginebeforeyouleave theoperatingposition(behindthehandles).Waituntiltheauger/ impellercomestoa completestopbeforeuncloggingthechute assembly,makingany adjustments,or inspections.

Neverputyourhandinthedischargeorcollectoropenings.Do notunclogchuteassemblywhileengineis running.Shutoff engineand remainbehindhandlesuntilallmovingpartshave stoppedbeforeunclogging.

Useonlyattachmentsandaccessoriesapprovedbythemanufac- turer(e.g.wheelweights,tirechains,cabsetc.). Forinformation concerningtheseitems,call1-800-469-4663.

Whenstartingengine,pullcord slowlyuntilresistanceisfelt,then pull rapidly.Rapidretractionofstartercord(kickback)willpull handandarmtowardenginefasterthanyoucanlet go.Broken bones,fractures,bruisesorsprainscouldresult.

CLEARING A CLOGGED DISCHARGE CHUTE

Handcontactwiththe rotatingimpellerinsidethe dischargechute

is themostcommoncauseof injuryassociatedwithsnowthrowers.

Neveruseyourhandtocleanoutthedischargechute.

Toclear thechute:

1. SHUTTHEENGINEOFF!

2. Wait 10secondstobe suretheimpellerbladeshavestopped rotating.

3. Alwaysusea clean-outtool,notyourhands.

MAINTENANCE & STORAGE

• Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproperoperation

regularly.Refertothe maintenanceandadjustmentsectionsof thismanual.

• Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspectingmachinedisengageall controlleversandstoptheengine.Waituntilthe auger/impeller cometoa completestop.Disconnectthe sparkplugwireand groundagainsttheengineto preventunintendedstarting.

Checkboltsand screwsforpropertightnessat frequentintervals tokeepthemachineinsafeworkingcondition.Also,visually inspectmachineforanydamage.

Donotchangetheenginegovernorsettingor over-speedthe engine.Thegovernorcontrolsthe maximumsafeoperatingspeed ofthe engine.

Snowthrowershaveplatesandskidshoesaresubjecttowear anddamage.Foryoursafetyprotection,frequentlycheckall componentsand replacewithoriginalequipmentmanufacturer's (OEM)partsonlyaslistedinthe Partspagesof thisoperator's manual.Useofpartswhichdonot meettheoriginalequipment specificationsmayleadto improperperformanceandcompro- misesafety!

Checkcontrolleversperiodicallytoverifytheyengageanddisen- gageproperlyandadjust,ifnecessary.Refertothe adjustment sectioninthisoperator'smanualforinstructions.

Maintainor replacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary. Observeproperdisposallawsand regulationsforgas,oil,etc. to

protecttheenvironment. Priorto storing,runmachineafew minutestoclearsnowfrom

machineand preventfreezeupofauger/impeller. Neverstorethemachineorfuel containerinsidewherethereisan

openflame,sparkorpilot lightsuchasa waterheater,furnace, clothesdryeretc.

Alwaysrefertothe operator'smanualforproperinstructionson off-seasonstorage.

Checkfuelline,tank, cap,andfittingsfrequentlyforcracksor leaks.Replaceif necessary.

Donotcrankenginewithsparkplugremoved. Accordingtothe ConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC)

andtheU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproduct hasan AverageUsefulLifeof seven(7)years,or 60 hoursof operation.Atthe endoftheAverageUsefulLifehavethe machine inspectedannuallybyan authorizedservicedealerto ensurethat allmechanicalandsafetysystemsareworkingproperlyand not wornexcessively.Failureto do so can resultinaccidents,injuries

ordeath.

DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE

Toavoidseriousinjuryor death,do notmodifyengineinany way. Tamperingwiththegovernorsettingcanleadtoa runawayengineand causeitto operateat unsafespeeds.Nevertamperwithfactorysetting ofenginegovernor.

NOTICE REGARDING EMiSSiONS

EngineswhicharecertifiedtocomplywithCaliforniaandfederal

EPAemissionregulationsfor SORE(SmallOff RoadEquipment)are certifiedto operateonregularunleadedgasoline,and mayinclude thefollowingemissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification(EM),

OxidizingCatalyst(OC),SecondaryAirInjection(SAI)and ThreeWay

Catalyst(TWO)if so equipped.

SPARK ARRESTOR

Thismachineisequippedwithaninternalcombustionengineand shouldnotbe usedonornearanyunimprovedforest-covered, brush-coveredorgrass-coveredlandunlessthe engine'sexhaust systemisequippedwitha sparkarrestormeetingapplicablelocalor statelaws(if any)

Ifa sparkarrestorisused,itshouldbe maintainedin effectiveworking orderbytheoperator.Inthe StateofCaliforniatheaboveis required

bylaw (Section4442oftheCaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Other

statesmayhavesimilarlaws. Federallawsapplyonfederallands. A sparkarrestorforthemufflerisavailablethroughyournearestSears

PartsandRepairServiceCenter.

REMOVING FROM CARTON

1. Cutthecornersof thecartonandlaythesidesflaton theground. Removeanddiscardallpackinginserts.

2. Movethesnowthrowerout ofthecarton.

3. Makecertainthecartonhas beencompletelyemptiedbefore discardingit.

ASSEMBLY

1. Observethe lowerrearareaof thesnowthrowertobesure both cablesarealignedwith rollerguidesbeforepivotingthehandle

upward. a. Placethe shiftleverin the F6position.

b. Pullupandbackon upperhandleasshownin Figure1.As

youare raisingthehandleupward,makesurethatbothends ofthe centercablearepositionedproperlyinthebrackets. Alignupperhandlewiththelowerhandle.

c. Tightenhandknobssecuringupperhandletolowerhandle.

Removeanddiscardany rubberbands,ifpresent.Theyare forpackagingpurposesonly.

2. Removecotter pin,wingnut,and hexscrewfromchutecontrol headandclevispinandbow-tiecotterpinfromchutesupport bracket.See Figure2.

3. Insertthe chutecontrolrodintoinputofchutecontrolhead.Push rodasfar intothechutecontrolheadaspossible,keepingthe holesinthe rodpointingupward.See Figure3.

4. Placechuteontochutebaseandensurechutecontrolrodis positionedunderhandlepanel.Installhexboltpreviouslyremoved

butdonot securewithwingnutatthistime.SeeFigure4.

5. Squeezethe triggeronthehandlepaneljoystickand rotatethe chutebyhandto faceforward.Theholesinthechutecontrolinput willbefacingup.SeeFigure5.

NOTE:The chutewillnotrotatewithoutsqueezingthetriggeronthe

joystick.

6. Rotatethejoystickto theoneo'clockpositionsothesilverindica- torarrowon theinputshaftbelowthe controlpanelpoints upward.SeeFigure6.

rod.Lineupthe holein the rodwiththearrowon theinputshaft

and inserttheendofthe rodintotheinputshaftbelowjoystickon

handlepanel.SeeFigure7.

NOTE:Thechutecontrolrodwillfit snugglyintothe inputshaft. Supporttherearofthedashpanelwithone handwhileinsertingthe rodwithyourotherhandto ensuretherodisinsertedell the way into

theinput shaft.

8. Nowpushthe chutecontrolrodbacktowardsthehandlepanel untilthe holeinthe rodlinesupwiththeholeinthe chutecontrol inputclosestto thechutecontrolhead.Insertthecotterpin.See Figure8.

NOTE:The secondholeis usedtoachievefurtherengagementofthe rodintothe inputshaftifrequiredandcanbe usedlaterforadjustment ifthe chutedoesnotfullyrotate.Refertothe Service& Maintenance sectionforChuteControlRodadjustments.

9. Finishsecuringchutecontrolheadto chutesupportbracketwith

wingnut,andclevispinandbow-tiecotterpin removedearlier.Do

notovertighten.SeeFigure9.

Tire Pressure

Underanycircumstancedo notexceedmanufacturer'srecom- mendedpsi.Equaltirepressureshouldbemaintainedat all times. Excessivepressurewhenseatingbeadsmaycausetire/rim assemblytoburstwithforcesufficienttocauseseriousinjury.Refer tosidewallof tirefor recommendedpressure.

Thetiresareover-inflatedforshippingpurposes.Checkthetire pressurebeforeoperatingthesnowthrower.Refertothe tiresidewall fortiremanufacturer'srecommendedpsianddeflate(orinflate)the tiresasnecessary.

ADJUSTMENTS

Skid Shoes Thesnowthrowerskidshoesareadjustedupwardatthefactoryfor

shippingpurposes.Adjustthemdownward,ifdesired,priortooperat- ingthesnowthrower.

It isnotrecommendedthatyouoperatethis snowthrowerongravel asit caneasilypickup andthrowloosegravel,causingpersonal

njuryordamageto thesnowthrowerandsurroundng property.

• Forclosesnowremovalona smoothsurface,raiseskidshoes higherontheaugerhousing.

• Usea middleorlowerpositionwhentheareatobe clearedis uneven,suchasa graveldriveway

NOTE:If youchooseto operatethesnowthrowerona gravelsurface, keepthe skidshoesin positionfor maximumclearancebetweenthe groundandtheshaveplate.

Toadjustthe skidshoes:

1. Loosenthefourhexnuts(twooneachside)andcarriagebolts. Moveskidshoestodesiredposition.SeeFigure13.

2. Makecertaintheentirebottomsurfaceof skidshoeis againstthe groundtoavoidunevenwearontheskidshoes.

3. Retightennutsand boltssecurely.

1. Stoptheengineby removingtheignitionkeyandloosenthe plasticwingknobfoundontheleft sideof thechuteassembly.

2. Pivotthechuteupwardordownwardbeforeretighteningthewing knob.See Figure14.

Auger Control

Priortooperatingyoursnowthrower,carefullyreadandfollowall instructionsbelow.Performalladjustmentsto verifyyoursnow throwerisoperatingsafelyandproperly.

Checktheadjustmentofthe augercontrolasfollows:

1. Theaugercontrolislocatedonthe left handle.SeeFigure15 inset.Whentheaugercontrolis releasedandin thedisengaged

"up"position,thecableshouldhaveverylittleslack.Itshould NOTbetight.

2. Ina well-ventibtedarea,start thesnowthrowerengine.Referto StartingtheEngineinthe Operationsection.

3. Whilestandinginthe operator'sposition(behindthe snow thrower),engagethe augers.

4. Allowtheaugersto remainengagedforapproximatelyten (10)

secondsbeforereleasingthe augercontrol.Repeatthisseveral times.

5. Withtheaugercontrolin thedisengaged"up"position,walktothe frontofthe machine.

6. Confirmthatthe augershavecompletelystoppedrotatingand showNOsignsof motion.If anyaugershowsANYsignof

rotating,immediatelyreturntothe operator'spositionandshutoff theengine.WaitforALLmovingpartsto stopbeforeadjustingthe augercontrol.

7. Toreadjustthecontrolcable,loosentheupperhexboltonthe augercablebracket.SeeFigure15.

8. Positionthebracketupwardtoprovidemoreslack(or downward toincreasecabletension).

9. Retightenthe upperhexbolt.

10. Repeatsteps2-6aboveto verifyproperadjustmenthasbeen achieved.

CLEAN-OUT TOOL

Neveruseyourhandsto clearacloggedchuteassembly.Shut

loft engineand remainbehindhandlesuntilallmovingpartshave lstoppedbeforeusingtheclean-outtool toclearthe chuteassembly.

Thechuteclean-outtoolisconvenientlyfastenedtothe rearofthe augerhousingwitha mountingclip. Shouldsnowandicebecome lodgedin thechuteassemblyduringoperation,proceedasfollowsto safelycleanthechuteassemblyandchuteopening:

1. Releaseboththe AugerControlandtheDriveControl.

2. Stopthe enginebyremovingtheignitionkey.

3. Removethe clean-outtoolfromtheclipwhichsecuresit tothe rearofthe augerhousing.

4. Usetheshovel-shapedendof theclean-outtoolto dislodgeand scoopanysnowand icewhichhasformedin andnearthechute assembly.

5. Refastentheclean-outtooltothe mountingclipontherearof theaugerhousing,reinserttheignitionkeyandstartthesnow thrower'sengine.

6. Whilestandinginthe operator'sposition(behindthesnow thrower),engagethe augercontrolforafewsecondstoclearany remainingsnowandice fromthechuteassembly.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

Read,understand,andfollowall instructionsandwarningsonthe machineand inthismanualbeforeoperating.

Oil Theunit wasshippedwith oil inthe engine.Checkoillevelbefore

eachoperationtoensureadequateoilinthe engine.Forfurther instructions,refertothe stepsonpage18.

NOTE:Besuretochecktheengineon a levelsurfacewiththeengine stopped.

1. Removethe oil fillercap/dipstickandwipethe dipstickclean.

2. insertthe cap/dipstickintotheoilfillerneck,butdo NOTscrewit

in.

3. Removethe oil fillercap/dipstick,ifthelevelislow,slowlyadd oil (5%30, witha minimumclassificationof SF/SG)untiloillevel registersbetweenhigh(H) andlow(L).

NOTE:Do notoverfill.Overfillingwithoil mayresultinenginesmoking, hardstartingorsparkplugfouling.

4. Replaceandtightencap/dipstickfirmlybeforestartingengine.

Gasoline Useautomotivegasoline(unleadedor lowleadedto minimizecombus-

tionchamberdeposits)witha minimumof87octane.Gasolinewith upto 10%ethanolor 15%MTBE(MethylTertiaryButylEther)canbe used.Neveruseanoil/gasolinemixtureor dirtygasoline.Avoidgetting dirt,dust,or waterinthefuel tank.DONOTuse E85gasoline.

• Refuelina well-ventilatedareawiththe enginestopped.Donot smokeorallowflamesor sparksinthe areawheretheengineis

refueledor wheregasolineisstored.

• Donotoverfillthefueltank.After refueling,makesurethetank capis closedproperlyandsecurely.

• Becarefulnotto spillfuelwhenrefueling.Spilledfuelorfuel vapor mayignite,ifanyfuelisspilled,makesuretheareaisdrybefore startingthe engine.

• Avoidrepeatedorprolongedcontactwithskinor breathingof

)or.

Useextremecarewhenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremely flammableandthevaporsare explosive.Neverfuelthemachine indoorsorwhiletheengineis hotorrunning.Extinguishcigarettes, cigars,pipesandothersourcesof ignition.

1. Cleanaroundfuelfill beforeremovingcaptofuel.

STARTING THE ENGINE

Alwayskeephandsandfeetclearof movingparts.Donotusea pressurizedstartingfluid.Vaporsareflammable.

NOTE:Allowtheengineto warmupfora fewminutesafterstarting. Theenginewill notdevelopfullpoweruntilit reachesoperating

temperatures.

1. Makecertainboththe augercontrolanddrivecontrolareinthe disengaged(released)position.

2. insertkeyintoslot. Makesureitsnapsintoplace.Donot attempt toturn thekey.

NOTE:Theenginecannotstartwithoutthekeyfullyinsertedintothe ignitionswitch.

Electric Starter

Theoptionalelectricstarterisequippedwitha groundedthree-wire powercordandplug,and isdesignedto operateon120voltAC householdcurrent.It mustbeusedwitha properlygroundedthree- prongreceptacleat all timestoavoidthepossibilityofelectricshock.

Followall instructionscarefullypriortooperatingtheelectricstarter. DONOTuse electricstarterintherain.

Determinethatyourhome'swiringisa three-wiregroundedsystem.

Aska licensedelectricianifyouarenotcertain.

Ifyouhavea groundedthree-prongreceptacle,proceedasfollows. Ifyoudonot havetheproperhousewiring,DONOTusetheelectric

starterunderanyconditions.

1. Plugtheextensioncordintotheoutletlocatedontheengine's surface.Plugtheotherendof extensioncord intoathree-prong

120-volt,grounded,ACoutletina well-ventilatedarea.

2. Movethrottlecontrolto FAST(rabbit)'_ position. TO ENGAGE DRIVE

3. Movechoketothe CHOKEI,'_1 position(coldenginestart).If engineiswarm,placechokein RUNposition.

4. Pushprimerthree(3)times,makingsuretocoverventholein primerbulbwhen pushing.If engineis warm,pushprimeronly once.Alwayscoverventholewhenpushing.Coolweathermay requireprimingtobe repeated.

5. Pushstarterbuttontostart engine.Oncetheenginestarts,im- mediatelyreleasestarterbutton.Electricstarterisequippedwith thermaloverloadprotection;systemwilltemporarilyshut-downto

allowstartertocool ifelectricstarterbecomesoverloaded.

6. Astheenginewarms,slowlyrotatethe chokecontroltoRUN position.Ifthe enginefalters,restartengineandrunwithchoke athalf-chokepositionfora shortperiodoftime,andthenslowly rotatethechokeinto RUNposition.

7. Afterengineisrunning,disconnectpowercordfromelectric starter.Whendisconnecting,alwaysunplugtheendatthe wall outletbeforeunpluggingtheoppositeendfromtheengine.

Recoil Starter

Withthethrottlecontrolinthe Fast(rabbit)position,moveshift

leverintooneofthe sixforward(F)positionsortworeverse(R) positions.Selecta speedappropriateforthesnowconditionsand

a paceyou'recomfortablewith.

NOTE:When selectinga DriveSpeed,usetheslowerspeedsuntil

youarecomfortableandfamiliarwiththe operationofthesnow thrower.

2. Squeezethedrivecontrolagainstthe handleandthesnow throwerwillmove.Releaseitanddrive motionwillstop.

NOTE:NEVERrepositionthe shiftlever(changespeedsordirection oftravel)withoutfirstreleasingthedrivecontrolandbringingthesnow throwertoa completestop.Doingsowill resultin prematurewearto thesnowthrower'sdrivesystem.

TO ENGAGE AUGERS

1. Toengagetheaugersandstartthrowingsnow,squeezethe augercontrolagainstthelefthandle.Releasetostoptheaugers.

REPLACING SHEAR PINS

Donotpullthestarterhandlewhilethe enginerunning.

1. Movethrottlecontrolto FAST(rabbit)_J_ position.

2. Movechoketothe CHOKEI_¢1 position(coldenginestart).If engineiswarm,placechokein RUNposition.

3. Pushprimerthree(3)times,makingsuretocoverventholewhen pushing.Ifengineiswarm,pushprimeronlyonce.Alwayscover ventholewhenpushing.Coolweathermayrequireprimingtobe repeated.

4. Pullgentlyonthe starterhandleuntilitbeginstoresist,then pullquicklyandforcefullytoovercomethe compression.Engine shouldstart.Donotreleasethehandleandallow ittosnapback. ReturnropeSLOWLYto originalposition.Ifrequired,repeatthis step.

5. Astheenginewarms,slowlyrotatethe chokecontroltoRUN position.Ifthe enginefalters,restartengineandrunwithchoke athalf-chokepositionfora shortperiodoftime,andthenslowly rotatethechokeinto RUNposition.

Theaugersare securedtothespiralshaftwith shearpinsandcotter

pins.If theaugersshouldstrikeaforeignobjectoricejam,the snow throwerisdesignedsothatthe pinsmayshear.If theaugerswillnot turn,checkto seeifthe pinshavesheared.SeeFigure17.

NEVERreplacetheaugershearpinswithanythingotherthan Sears SKU#88389/0EM PartNo.738-04124Areplacementshearpins. Anydamagetotheaugergearboxorother componentsasa resultof failingto do sowill NOTbecoveredbyyour snowthrower'swarranty.

Alwaysturnoff thesnowthrower'sengineand removethekeypriorto

replacingshearpins.

STOPPING THE ENGINE

Afteryouhavefinishedsnow-throwing,runenginefora few minutes beforestoppingtohelpdryoffany moistureontheengine.

1. MovethrottlecontroltoOFFposition.

2. Removethekey.Removingthekeywill reducethepossibilityof unauthorizedstartingoftheenginewhileequipmentisnotin use. Keepthekeyina safeplace.Theenginecannotstart withoutthe key.

3. Wipeany moistureawayfromthecontrolsontheengine.

1. Removethesparkplugbootandusea sparkplugwrenchto removetheplug.See Figure20.

2. Visuallyinspectthesparkplug.Discardthesparkplugifthereis apparentwear,orif the insulatoriscrackedorchipped.Cleanthe sparkplugwitha wirebrushifitis to be reused.

3. Measurethepluggapwitha feelergauge.Correctas necessary bybendingsideelectrode.SeeFigure21.The gapshouldbeset to.02-.03inches(0.60-0.80ram).

4. Checkthatthe sparkplugwasheris ingoodconditionandthread thesparkplugin byhandto preventcross-threading.

5. Afterthesparkplugis seated,tightenwithasparkplugwrenchto compressthewasher.

NOTE:Wheninstallinga newsparkplug,tighten1/2-turnafterthe sparkplugseatsto compressthewasher.Whenreinstallinga used sparkplug,tighten1/8-to 1/4-turnafterthesparkplugseatsto compressthewasher.

LUBRICATION

4. Applya lightcoatingof engineoil (or3-in-1oil) tothe hexshaft. SeeFigure22.

NOTE:Whenlubricatingthehexshaft,be carefulnottogetanyoilon thealuminumdriveplateor rubberfrictionwheel.Doingsowill hinder thesnowthrower'sdrivesystem.Wipeoff anyexcessor spilledoil. Wheels

Atleastoncea season,removebothwheels.Cleanandcoattheaxles witha multipurposeautomotivegreasebeforereinstallingwheels.

SHAVE PLATE AND SKID SHOES

Theshaveplateand skidshoesonthebottomof thesnowthrowerare subjecttowear.Theyshouldbecheckedperiodicallyandreplaced whennecessary.

NOTE:Theskidshoeson thismachinehavetwowearedges.When onesidewearsout,theycan be rotated1800to usetheotheredge.

Toremoveskidshoes:

1. Removethe twocarriagebolts,washers(ifequipped),andhex flangenutsthat secureeachskidshoetothe snowthrower.

2. Reassemblenewskidshoeswiththe fourcarriagebolts(twoon eachside),washers,andhex flangenuts.RefertoFigure24.

Toremoveshaveplate:

1. Removethe carriageboltsandhexnutswhichattachit tothe snowthrowerhousing.

2. Reassemblenewshaveplate,makingsureheadsof carriage boltsaretothe insideof housing.Tightensecurely.SeeFigure24.

ADJUSTMENTS

2. Loosenthehex nuton theshiftcableindexbracket.SeeFigure

3. Pivotthebracketdownwardtotakeupslack inthecable.

4. Retightenthehexnut.

Drive Control Whenthedrivecontrolis releasedandinthedisengaged"up"position,

thecableshouldhaveverylittle slack.It shouldNOTbetight.Also, ifthereisexcessiveslackin thedrive cableorifthe unitexperiences intermittentdrivewhileusing,the cablemayneedtobeadjusted.

Checktheadjustmentofthe drivecontrolasfollows:

1. Withthedrivecontrolreleased,pushthesnowthrowergently forward.Theunitshouldrollfreely.

2. Engagethedrivecontrolandgentlyattempttopushthesnow throwerforward.Thewheelsshouldnotturn.Theunitshouldnot

rollfreely.

3. Withthedrivecontrolreleased,movetheshift leverbackand forthbetweenthe R2positionandthe F6positionseveraltimes.

Thereshouldbeno resistancein the shiftlever.

4. If anyoftheabovetestsfailed,the drivecableisin needof adjust- ment.Proceedasfollows:

a. Shutoff theengineas instructedinthe Operationsection. b. Loosenthelowerhexboltonthedrivecablebracket.See

Figure26.

c. Positionthebracketupwardtoprovidemoreslack(or

downwardto increasecabletension).

d. Retightenthe lowerhexboltandrepeatsteps1 through4.

Drive Belt Toremoveandreplaceyoursnowthrower'sdrivebelt,proceedas

follows:

1. Topreventspillage,removeallfuelfromtankby runningengine untilit stops.

2. Removetheplasticbelt coveronthefrontofthe enginebyremov- ingthetwoself-tappingscrews.See Figure28onpreviouspage.

3. Removethebeltfromenginepulleyasfollows.RefertoFigure33. A. Rolltheaugerbeltoff theenginepulley.

B. Useawrenchto pivotthe idlerpulleytowardthe right. C. Liftthedrivebeltoffenginepulley.

4. Carefullypivotthesnowthrowerupand forwardsothatitrestson theaugerhousing.

5. Removetheframecoverfromtheundersideofthe snowthrower byremovingtheself-tappingscrewswhichsecureit.Referto

6. Backoutthe stopbolttoincreasetheclearancebetweenthe frictionwheeldiscandfrictionwheel.SeeFigure34.

7. Slipthe drivebeltoffthefrictionwheeldiscandbetweenfriction wheelandfrictionwheeldisc.SeeFigure34.

8. Reassembledrivebeltby followingtheseinstructionsinopposite orderand mannerofremoval.Besureto reinstallthestopbolt.

FRICTION WHEEL INSPECTION

Ifthe snowthrowerfailsto drivewiththedrivecontrolengaged,and performingtheDriveControlCableAdjustmentfailstocorrectthe problem,thefrictionwheelmayneedto be replaced.Examinethe frictionwheelrubberforsignsof wearorcrackingandreplacewheelif necessary.

NOTE:Severalcomponentsmustbe removedandspecialtoolsare requiredinordertoreplacethis snowthrower'sfrictionwheel.Ifyour frictionwheelneedsto bereplaced,contactthenearestSearsParts& RepairCenter.
