PREPARATION

• Thoroughlyinspecttheareawherethe equipmentistobeused.

Removeall rocks,bottles,cans,or otherforeignobjectswhich couldbepickeduporthrownandcausepersonalinjuryor damageto the machine.

• Alwayswearsafetyglassesorsafetygogglesduringoperation andwhileperforminganadjustmentorrepair,to protectyour eyes.Thrownobjectswhichricochetcancauseseriousinjuryto theeyes.

• Wearsturdy,rough-soledworkshoesandclose-fittingslacksand

shirts.Loosefittingclothesor jewelrycan becaughtin movable parts.Neveroperatethismachineinbarefeetorsandals.

• Beforestarting,checkallboltsandscrewsfor propertightnessto

besurethemachineisinsafeworkingcondition.Also,visually inspectmachinefor any damageatfrequentintervals.

• Disengageclutchleversandshift (if provided)intoneutral("N")

beforestartingtheengine.

• Neverleavethismachineunattendedwiththeenginerunning.

• Neverattempttomakeanyadjustmentswhiletheengineis

running,exceptwherespecificallyrecommendedintheoperator's manual.

SafeHandlingof Gasoline: Toavoidpersonalinjuryor propertydamageuseextremecarein

handlinggasoline.Gasolineisextremelyflammableandthevaporsare explosive.Seriouspersonalinjurycanoccurwhengasolineisspilled onyourselfor yourclotheswhichcanignite.Washyourskinand changeclothesimmediately.

• Useonlyanapprovedgasolinecontainer.

• Neverfill containersinsidea vehicleor onatruckortrailerbed withaplasticliner.Alwaysplacecontainersonthegroundaway

fromyourvehiclebeforefilling.

• Whenpractical,removegas-poweredequipmentfromthetruck ortrailerand refuelitontheground.Ifthisis notpossible,then refuelsuchequipmentona trailerwithaportablecontainer,rather thanfroma gasolinedispensernozzle.

• Keepthe nozzleincontactwiththerimofthefueltankor containeropeningatalltimesuntilfuelingiscomplete.Do notuse a nozzlelock-opendevice.

• Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipesandothersourcesof

ignition.

• Neverfuel machineindoors.

• Neverremovegascapor addfuelwhiletheengineishotorrun- ning.Allowenginetocoolatleasttwo minutesbeforerefueling.

• Neveroverfillfueltank.Fill tankto nomorethan1/2inchbelow bottomoffillernecktoallowspaceforfuelexpansion.

• Replacegasolinecapandtightensecurely.

• Ifgasolineisspilled,wipeitoff theengineandequipment.Move unitto anotherarea.Wait5 minutesbeforestartingtheengine.

• To reducefirehazards,keepmachinefreeofgrass, leaves,or otherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanupoil orfuelspillageandremoveany

fuelsoakeddebris.

• Neverstorethe machineorfuel containerinsidewherethereisan openflame,sparkor pilotlightasonawaterheater,spaceheater,

furnace,clothesdryerorothergasappliances.

OPERATION

• Do notputhandsorfeetnear rotatingparts.Contactwiththe rotatingpartscanamputatehandsand feet.

• Do notoperatemachinewhileundertheinfluenceofalcoholor drugs.

• Neveroperatethismachinewithoutgoodvisibilityorlight.Always be sureofyourfootingandkeepa firmholdonthe handles.

• Keepbystandersawayfromthe machinewhileitisinoperation. Stopthe machineif anyoneentersthearea.

• Becarefulwhentillinginhardground.Thetines maycatchinthe groundandpropelthetillerforward.Ifthis occurs,letgoofthe

handlebarsanddo notrestrainthemachine.

• Exerciseextremecautionwhenoperatingonor crossinggravel surfaces.Stayalertforhiddenhazardsortraffic.Donotcarry

passengers.

• Neveroperatethemachineat hightransportspeedsonhardor slipperysurfaces.

• Exercisecautiontoavoidslippingorfalling.

• Lookdownand behindandusecarewhenin reverseorpulling machinetowardsyou.

• Starttheengineaccordingtothe instructionsfoundinthis manual and keepfeetwellawayfromthetinesatall times.

• Afterstrikingaforeignobjectorifyourmachineshouldstartmak- inganunusualnoiseor vibration,immediatelyshutthe engineoff.

Disconnectthe sparkplugwire,grounditagainsttheengineand

performthefollowingsteps: a. Inspectfordamage.

b. Repairorreplaceanydamagedparts. c. Checkforanyloose partsandtightento assurecontinued

safeoperation.

• Disengageall clutchlevers(if fitted)andstopenginebeforeyou leavethe operatingposition(behindthe handles).Waituntil thetinescometoa completestopbeforeuncloggingthetines, makinganyadjustments,or inspections.

• Neverrunanengineindoorsorinapoorlyventilatedarea.Engine exhaustcontainscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessanddeadlygas.

• Mufflerandenginebecomehotandcancausea burn.Donot touch.

• Usecautionwhentillingnearfences,buildingsandunderground utilities.Rotatingtinescancausepropertydamageorpersonal

injury.

• Donotoverloadmachinecapacityby attemptingto tillsoiltoo deepattoofastof a rate.

• Ifthemachineshouldstartmakinganunusualnoiseorvibration, stoptheengine,disconnectthesparkplugwireandgroundit againsttheengine.Inspectthoroughlyfor damage.Repairany damagebeforestartingandoperating.

• Keepallshields,guards,and safetydevicesinplaceandoperat- ing properly.

• Neverpick uporcarrymachinewhiletheengineisrunning.

• Useonlyattachmentsandaccessoriesapprovedbythemanu- factureras listedin thePartsListpagesof thisoperator'smanual.

MAINTENANCE & STORAGE

• Keepthemachine,attachmentsandaccessoriesin safeworking

order.

• Allowthemachinetocoolat leastfiveminutesbeforestoring.

Nevertamperwithsafetydevices.Checktheirproperoperation regularly.

• Checkboltsandscrewsforpropertightnessatfrequentintervals to keepthemachineinsafeworkingcondition.Also,visually inspectmachineforanydamage.

• Beforecleaning,repairing,or inspecting,stoptheengineand makecertainthetinesandallmovingpartshavestopped.

Disconnectthe sparkplugwireandgrounditagainsttheengineto

preventunintendedstarting.

• Do notchangetheenginegovernorsettingsorover-speedthe engine.Thegovernorcontrolsthemaximumsafeoperatingspeed ofengine.

Maintainorreplacesafetyandinstructionlabels,asnecessary. Followthismanualforsafeloading,unloading,transporting,and

storageof thismachine. Alwaysreferto theoperator'smanualforimportantdetailsifthe

machineisto bestoredforan extendedperiod. If thefueltankhastobe drained,do thisoutdoors.

Observeproperdisposallawsandregulationsfor gas,oil, etc.to protecttheenvironment.

AccordingtotheConsumerProductsSafetyCommission(CPSC) andtheU.S.EnvironmentalProtectionAgency(EPA),thisproduct hasan AverageUsefulLifeof seven(7)years,or 130hoursof operation.Attheendof theAverageUsefulLifehavethemachine inspectedannuallybyanauthorizedservicedealertoensurethat allmechanicalandsafetysystemsareworkingproperlyandnot wornexcessively.Failureto dosocanresultinaccidents,injuries

ordeath.

DO NOT MODIFY ENGINE

Toavoidseriousinjuryordeath,donot modifyengineinanyway. Tamperingwiththegovernorsettingcanleadto arunawayengineand causeittooperateatunsafespeeds.Nevertamperwithfactorysetting ofenginegovernor.

NOTICE REGARDING EMISSIONS

EngineswhicharecertifiedtocomplywithCaliforniaandfederal

EPAemissionregulationsforSORE(SmallOff RoadEquipment)are certifiedto operateon regularunleadedgasoline,and mayinclude thefollowingemissioncontrolsystems:EngineModification(EM),

OxidizingCatalyst(CO),SecondaryAirInjection(SAI)and ThreeWay

Catalyst(TWO)if so equipped.

SPARK ARRESTOR

Thismachineis equippedwithan internalcombustionengineand shouldnotbeusedonor nearanyunimprovedforest-covered, brushcoveredor grass-coveredlandunlesstheengine'sexhaust systemisequippedwitha sparkarrestormeetingapplicablelocalor statelaws(ifany)

Ifasparkarrestorisused,itshouldbemaintainedin effectiveworking orderbytheoperator.IntheStateof Californiatheaboveis required

bylaw (Section4442of theCaliforniaPublicResourcesCode).Other

statesmayhavesimilarlaws. Federallawsapplyonfederallands. A sparkarrestorforthemufflerisavailablethroughyournearestSears

PartsandRepairServiceCenter.

Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an odorless and deadly gas.

WARNING-- HOT SURFACE

Engine parts, especially the muffler, become extremely hot during operation. Allow engine

and muffler to cool before touching.

WARNING: YourResponsibility--Restrictthe useofthispowermachinetopersonswhoread,understandandfollowthe warningsandinstructionsinthismanualandonthemachine.

OPENING CARTON

1. Removethe staples,breaktheglueonthetopflaps,orcut the tapeat the endofthecartonandpeelitalongthetopflapto open.

2. Removealllooseparts.

3. Cutthecornersandlaythecartondownfiat.

4. Removeloosepackingmaterial.

REMOVING UNIT FROM CARTON

1. Usethehandlebrackettoliftandpullthetillerbackwardstoa flat area.Checkthecartonthoroughlyforlooseparts.

2. Extendthecontrolcableandlay it onthefloor.Becardul notto bendor kinkthecontrolcable.

3. Raisethefine shieldhingeflapassemblyandinsertthe depth stakeassemblyintheslot,underthe fineshieldandup through thetineshieldassembly.

4. Inserttheclevispinthroughthefineshieldanddepthstake assemblies.Secureitwiththecotterpin.

5. Insertthehexboltintothe top holeofthedepthstakeassembly.

Placetheflatwasheronthehex boltandthreadtheT-knobonto

thehexbolt.Tightensecurely.SeeFigure1.

6. Tipthetiller backdownsothatit restsonthetines.

ASSEMBLING THE HANDLE

1. Locatetheupperhandleassemblyandhandletube assembly.

2. Usingtwohexscrewsandflangelocknutssecurethehandle tubeassemblytotheupperhandleassembly.SeeFigure2.

Removethe tophexscrew,handleadjustmentcrank,flangelock nuts and nutretainerbracketfromthehandlemountingbrackets, butdo notremovethebottomhexscrewandflangelocknut.See

2. Placethehandleassemblyinpositionbetweenthehandle mountingbrackets.

3. Lineuptheholesinthehandlewiththeholesinthebracketand securewiththehardwarepreviouslyremoved.

ATTACHING THE SHIFT ROD

1. Makesurethe handleassemblyisinthehighestposition.Referto theOperationSection.

2. Removethehairpinclip,rubberwasher,flatwasherandT-knobfrom thecontrolrodandputtherubberwasherinplace.SeeFigure4.

3. Slidethehandleswivelrodthroughtheupperhandleassembly, insertthelowerendofthe rodintotheswinghandlelinkand securewiththepreviouslyremovedhardware.SeeFigure5.

1. Makesurethe handleassemblyisinthehighestposition.Referto theOperationSection.

2. Removethecotterpin andT-knobfromthehandleswivelrod. SeeFigure5.

4. Insertthecablebarrelintothecablebarrelholder,insertthe

barrelandbarrelholderintotheclutchhandleandsecurewiththe hexscrew.SeeFigure7.

5. Whentheclutchcableisinplace,securethecableontothehandle withtheprovidedcabletiesinthelocationsshowninFigure8.

ADJUSTMENTS

Clutch Cable

Checktheadjustmentof theclutchcableasfollows:

1. Positionthetillersothefrontcounterweightis againstasolid object,suchas a wall.

2. Withthegearselectionleverin NEUTRAL,startthe engine.Refer toStartingtheEngineintheOperationsection.

3. Standingonthe rightsideofthe tiller,examinethe belt(insidethe beltcover).Itshouldnotbe turning.

4. Ifthe beltturnswithouttheclutchcontrolengaged,unthread theuppernutandadjustit byunthreadinglowernuta fewturns clockwise(whenstandinginthe operator'sposition)andthen retightentheuppernutagainstthecablebracket.SeeFigure9.

5. Nowmovetheshiftlevertothe FORWARDposition.

6. Carefullyengagetheclutchbysqueezingclutchleveragainstthe handle.Thewheelsshouldspin.

7. Ifthewheelsdonotspinwiththetillerin forward,loosenthe uppernutandadjustbytighteningthe cablea fewturnscounter- clockwise(whenstandingin theoperator'sposition)andthen

retightentheuppernutagainstcablebracket.See Figure9.

8. Recheckbothadjustments,and readjustasnecessary.

NOTE:A secondarycableadjustmentisavailableifyoureachthe pointthatadditionaladjustmentis needed.Movethenutsat theother endofthecabletowardstheendofthecasing.Thenreadjustthenuts

atthecablebracket.

Idler Pulley Rod

Checkthe adjustmentoftheidlerpulleyrodasfollows:

1. Disconnectandgroundthe sparkplugwireagainsttheengine.

2. Withtheengineoffandtheclutchleverdisengaged,shifttheshift leverto eachforwardmode.

3. Confirmthatthe shiftleverindicatorbracketdoesnottouchthe idlerpulleyrodwiththeclutchleverdisengaged.

4. Toreadjusttheidlerpulleyrod, removethebeltcoverasde- scribedunderBeltReplacementintheServiceandMaintenance

section.

5. Removethe cotterpinandspringwasherfromtheidlerpulleyrod. See Figure10.

6. Movetheidlerpulleyrodoutof the upperholeandintothe lower holeintheidlerbracket.

7. Replacethespringwasherandcotter pin.

8. Checkthe clearanceoftheidlerpulleyrodtotheindicatorbracket byshiftingto eachforwardmode.

RECOIL STARTER HANDLE

Thishandleisusedto starttheengine.

THROTTLE CONTROL

Thethrottlecontrolis locatedonthesideoftheengine.Itregulatesthe spreadoftheengineandwillshutoff theenginewhen movedintothe STOPposition.

Meets ANSi Safety Standards

CraftsmanTillersconformtothesafetystandardoftheAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute(ANSI).

Thechokecontrolisfoundonthesideoftheengineandisactivatedby movingthelevertotheCHOKEposition.Activatingthe chokecontrol closesthechokeplateonthecarburetorandaidsinstartingtheengine.

AIR FILTER

Theairfilterisadeviceon theengineairintakethatpreventsdustand dirtenteringtheengine.

MUFFLER

Engineexhaustexitsthe engineviathemuffler.

ELECTRIC STARTER OUTLET

Requiresthe useof athree-prongoutdoorextensioncordanda 120V

powersource/walloutlet.

Thesteeringhandlecan beswivelledineitherdirection.Thisenables thetillerto beguidedtothe nextrow.Releasethesteeringhandle bypullinguponthe swinglever.Swivelthe handleintothedesired positionandreleasethehandletolockintoplace.

HANDLE ADJUSTMENT LOCK

Alcoholblendedfuels(calledgasoholor usingethanolor methanol) canattractmoisturewhichleadsto separationandformationofacids duringstorage.Acidicgascandamagethefuelsystemof anengine whileinstorage.

Toavoidengineproblems,thefuelsystemshouldbeemptied beforestoragefor30daysor longer.Drainthegastankbystarting

theengineandlettingitrununtilthefuellinesandcarburetorare empty.Usefreshfuelnextseason.SeeSTORAGEInstructionsfor

Neveruseengineor carburetorcleanerproductsinthefueltankor permanentdamagemayoccur.

SETTING THE DEPTH

Becertainsparkplugwire isdisconnectedandgroundedagainstthe

enginewhenperforminganyadjustments.

Tillingdepthiscontrolledbythedepthstakewhichcanbeadjustedtofive differentsettings.Adjustthesideshieldsasyouadjustthedepthstake.

• Whenusingthetillerforthefirsttime,usethe secondadjustment holefromthetop(1"oftillingdepth).

• Whenbreakingupsodandfor shallowcultivation,usethesetting whichgives1"of tillingdepth(secondholefromthetop). Place theside shieldsin theirlowestposition.

• Forfurtherdepth,raisethedepthstakeandsideshieldsandalso makeoneortwo morepassesoverthearea.

• Whentillingloosesoil,thedepth stakemayberaisedtoits highestposition(usebottomadjustmenthole)togivethedeepest tillingdepth.Raisethe side shieldstotheirhighestposition.

• Totransporttiller,lowerthedepthstake(usetopadjustmenthole).

Toadjustthe depthstake,removetheclevispinandcotterpin.Move thedepth staketothedesiredsettingandsecurewiththe clevispin andcotterpin.SeeFigure14.

Donotpushdownonthehandlebarstotry tomakethetillertill more deeply.Thistakesweightoff thewheels,whichallowthetinesto

rapidlypropelthe tiller,whichcould resultinlossofcontrol,property

[damage,orpersona njury.

1. PlacetheShiftLeverinthedesiredforwardtillingpositionandpress theClutchLeverdownagainstthehandletobegintilling.

2. Whentilling,letthewheelspullthe machinewhilethetinesdig. Walkslowlybehindthetillerallowingittomoveatitsownpacewhile keepingasecuregriponthehandlebarwithyourelbowsflexed.

3. ReleasetheClutchLevertostopthewheelsandtines.

To move in reverse: (Do not till in reverse)

a. ReleasetheClutchLever.Then liftthehandlebaruntil the

tinesareoff theground.

b. PlacetheShiftLeverin thereversepositionandthen press

the ClutchLeverdownagainstthehandlebarandwalk

backwardswiththemachine.

NOTE:In reversemode,thetineswillnotrotate.

Tilling Depth

• Don'toverloadtheengine,butdigas deeplyaspossibleoneach

pass.Onlaterpasses,thewheelsmaytendto spin inthesoftdirt. Helpthemalongbyliftingup slightlyonthe handlebar(onehand, palmup,worksmosteasily).

• Avoidthetemptationtopushdownonthe handlebarsinan attempttoforcethetillerto digdeeper.Doingsotakestheweight offthepoweredwheels,causingthemto losetraction.Without thewheelstoholdthetiller back,thetineswillattempttopropel towardstheoperatororawayfromthe operator.

• Whencultivating(breakingupthesurfacesoilaroundtheplants todestroyweeds,SeeFigure15),adjustthetinesto digonly 1"to 2"deep.Usingtheshallowtillingdepthhelpspreventinjurytothe plantswhoserootsoftengrowclosetothesurface.If needed,lift uponthe handlebarsslightlytopreventthetinesfromdiggingtoo deeply.(Cultivatingonaregularbasisnotonlyeliminatesweeds,it alsoloosensandaeratesthe soilforbettermoistureabsorptionand fasterplantgrowth.)Wateringthegardenareaafewdayspriorto tillingwillmaketillingeasier,aswilllettingthenewlyworkedsoilset fora dayortwobeforemakinga final,deeptillingpass.

• Beforeloadingor unloadingthe tiller,stopthe engine,waitforall partstostopmoving,disconnectthesparkplugwireand letthe engineandmufflercool.

• Thetilleristooheavyandbulkytobesafelyliftedbyoneperson. Twoor morepeopleshouldsharetheload.

• Usesturdyrampsandmanually-- withtheengineshutoff-- roll thetiller into andoutofthevehicle.Twoormorepeopleare

neededtodothis.

• The rampsmustbestrongenoughto supportthecombined weightofthetillerandany handlers.Therampsshouldprovide goodtractiontopreventslipping;theyshouldalsohavesiderails toguidethetilleralongthe ramps;andtheyshouldhavea locking

devicetosecurethemtothevehicle.

• The handlersshouldwearsturdyfootwearthatwillhelpto prevent slipping.

• Positiontheloadingvehiclesothattherampangleisasflat aspossible(theless inclinetotheramp,thebetter).Turnthe vehicle'sengineoffandapplytheparkingbrake.

• Whengoinguptheramps,standinthe normaloperatingposition andpushthetilleraheadof you.Havea personateachside to

turnthe wheels.

• Whengoingdowntheramps,walkbackwardwiththetiller followingyou.Keepalertforanyobstaclesbehindyou. Positiona personateachwheelto controlthespeedofthetiller.Nevergo downthe rampstiller-first,asthetillercouldtipforward.

• Placewoodenblocksonthedownhillsideofthewheelsifyou needto stopthetillerfromrollingdownthe ramp.Also,usethe blocksto temporarilykeepthe tillerinplaceonthe ramps(if necessary),andto chockthewheelsinplaceafterthetilleris in

thevehicle.

• Afterloadingthetiller,preventitfromrollingbychockingthe wheelswithblocks,andsecurelytiethetillerdown.

CLEARING THE TINES

Beforeclearingthetinesbyhand,stoptheengine,allowall moving partsto stopanddisconnectthe sparkplugwire.Failureto followthis warningcouldresultin personalinjury.

Thetineshavea self-clearingactionwhicheliminatesmostofthe tanglingofdebris.However,occasionallydry grass,stringystalksor toughvinesmaybecometangled.Followtheseproceduresto help avoidtanglingandtoclearthetines,if necessary.

• Toreducetangling,setthedepthstakedeepenoughto get maximum"chopping"actionasthetineschopthematerialagainst theground.Also,trytotill undercrop residuesorcovercrops whiletheyaregreen,moistandtender.

• Whiletilling,tryswayingthehandlebarsfromsidetoside(about 6"to 12").This"fishtailing"actionoftenclearsthetinesof debris.

ratesduringstorage,youmayneedto havethecarburetor,andother fuelsystemcomponents,servicedorreplaced.

1. Removeallfuel fromtankbyrunningengineuntilit stopsfrom lackoffuel.

2. Changetheoil.SeeChangeEngineOil inSERVICEAND MAINTENANCEsection.

3. Removesparkplugand pourabouta 1/2ounceof engineoilinto

thecylinder.Replacesparkplug.Pullout slowlyon therecoil starterhandleslowlytodistributeoil.

4. Cleandebrisfromaroundtheengineandthe muffler.Touchup

anydamagedpaint,andcoatotherareasthatmayrustwitha light filmofoil.

5. Storein a clean,dryandwellventilatedareaawayfromany ap-

pliancethatoperateswithaflameorpilotlight,suchasafurnace, waterheater,orclothesdryer.Alsoavoidany areawitha spark producingelectricmotor,orwherepowertoolsare operated.

6. Ifpossible,avoidstorageareaswith highhumidity,becausethat

promotesrustandcorrosion.

7. Keeptheenginelevelinstorage.Tiltingcancausefuelor oil

leakage.

PREPARING THE TILLER

Whenthe tillerwon'tbeusedforan extendedperiod,prepareitfor storageasfollows:

1. Cleanthe tillerandengine.

2. Followthelubricationrecommendationsandcheckforlooseparts and hardware.

Sears Emission Control Defects Warranty Coverage

4. Claimsand CoverageExclusions

Warrantyclaimsshallbefiledinaccordancewiththe provisionsofthe SearsEngineWarrantyPolicy.Warrantycoverageshallbeexcludedfor failuresof WarrantedPartswhichare notoriginal Searspartsor because ofabuse,neglector impropermaintenanceassetforth inthe Sears

EngineWarrantyPolicy.Searsisnotliableto coverfailuresof Warranted Partscausedby theuseof add-on,non-original,ormodifiedparts.

5. Maintenance

AnyWarrantedPartwhichis notscheduledforreplacementasrequired

maintenanceor whichis scheduledonlyforregularinspectiontothe effect

of"repairorreplaceasnecessary"shallbewarrantedasto defectsfor the warrantyperiod.AnyWarrantedPartwhich is scheduledfor replacement asrequiredmaintenanceshallbewarrantedasto defectsonlyforthe

periodoftimeuptothe first scheduledreplacementforthat part.Any replacementpartthatisequivalentinperformanceanddurabilitymay

beusedin theperformanceofanymaintenanceorrepairs.The owneris responsibleforthe performanceof allrequiredmaintenance,asdefinedin

6. ConsequentialCoverage

Look For Relevant Emissions Durability Period and

Air index information On Your Engine Emissions Label

Engines that are certified to meet the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Tier 2 Emission Standards must display information regarding the Emissions Durability Period and the Air Index. Sears Brands Management Corporation makes this information available to the consumer on our emission labels.

The Emissions Durability Period describes the number of hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified to be emissions compliant, assuming proper maintenance in accordance with the Operating & Mainte- nance Instructions. The following categories are used:

Moderate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 125 hours of actual engine running time. Intermediate: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 250 hours of actual engine running time. Extended: Engine is certified to be emission compliant for 500 hours of actual engine running time. For example, a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to 25 hours per year. Therefore, the Emissions

Durability Period of an engine with an intermediate rating would equate to 10 to 12 years. The Air index is a calculated number describing the relative level of emissions for a specific engine family. The

lower the Air Index, the cleaner the engine. This information is displayed in graphical form on the emissions label.

After July 1,2000, Look For Emissions Compliance Period

On Engine Emissions Compliance Label

After July 1, 2000 certain Sears Brands Management Corporation engines will be certified to meet the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Phase 2 emission standards. For Phase 2 certified engines, the Emissions Compliance Period referred to on the Emissions Compliance label indicates the number of operating hours for which the engine has been shown to meet Federal emission requirements.

For engines less than 225 cc displacement, Category C = 125 hours, B = 250 hours and A = 500 hours. For engines of 225 cc or more, Category C = 250 hours, B = 500 hours and A = 1000 hours.

This is a generic representation of the emission label typically found on a certified engine.

Ei Periodo de Duraci6n de las Emisiones describe el nQmero de horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento para el cuai se certifica que el motor cumpie con ias reglas de emisi6n, descontando el mantenimiento adecuado del mismo segQn las instrucciones de oper- aci6n y mantenimiento. Se utilizan las siguientes categonas:

Moderado:Se certifica que el motor cumpie con las reglas de emisi6n durante 125horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor. Inmediato:Se certifica que el motor cumpie con las reglas de emisi6n durante 250 horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor. Extendido:Se certifica que el motor cumpie con las reglas de emisi6n durante 500 horas de tiempo real de funcionamiento del motor. Por ejemplo, una cortadora de c6sped tJpica que se empuja desde arras se usa entre 20 y 25 horas por aSo. Por Io tanto, el Periodo de Duraci6n de Emisiones de un motor con una clasificaci6n intermedia sena equivaiente a entre 10 y 12 aSos. Laciasificaci6n de aire es un nQmero calculado para describir el nivel relativo de emisiones para un grupo de motores en particular.

Cuanto menor sea la clasificaci6n de aire, mayor es la limpieza del motor. La informaci6n se presenta de forma grAfica en la etiqueta de emisiones.

Despu_s del 1 de julio de 2000, busque el periodo de cumplimiento de las reglas de

emisiones en la etiqueta de cumplimiento de las reglas de emisiones del motor

Despu6s del 1 de julio de 2000 se certificarA que determinados motores Sears Brands Management Corporation cumplen con los estAndares de emisiones de la fase 2 de la Agencia de Protecci6n Ambientai de los Estados Unidos (USEPA).
