Read Before Use
CAUTION: To avoid tipping, do not hang item from the push handle.

CAUTION: Ensure the wheels are installed properly. You will hear a

CAUTION: If the user’s weight is less than 50lbs, the use of anti-tip tubes

is encouraged.

CAUTION: • For increased safety, the seat belt should be used at all times.
• Do not leave user unattended.
• Do not strap user too tight.
• Straps should not interfere with breathing or circulation.
• Always apply wheel locks before letting go of the chair.
• If front edge of seat is at or forward of the point where tires touch the floor, avoid using front of seat tubes for support during entry or exit from chair to prevent tipping.
• Avoid using footplates for weight support during exit or entry of the chair.

Fitting Guide
Convai d’s li ghtweight, foldi ng chai rs a r e desi gn ed to be more than j ust a conveni ent chai r. Order the correct si ze chai r by fi r st determi ni ng the user’s hei ght, weight a n d seati ng measu rements. Properly-fi tted, Conva i d chai rs w i ll provi de years of comfortable use. As your chi ld grows, refer back to thi s Fi tting Gui de to a dj ust the di mensi ons of the chai r.
Correct seati n g and posi ti oni ng encoura ges good posture, whi ch i n turn ai ds circula ti on, breathi ng and di gestion. Please take the ti me to properly adjust the chai r to fi t the user. I f the user i s not correctly posi tioned, check the accessori es section of this m a nual to see i f one or more of our accessori es would help to facili tate posture or consult a physi cal therapi st. I m pr oper seati ng can cau se problems. Please consult a physi cal therapi st or doctor for addi tiona l gui dance.
Seat Back Height
Seat back height va r i es accordi ng to chai r type and seat wi dth. Headrest extensi ons are ava i lable when extra height i s needed to support the head.
To determi ne the seat back hei ght, measu re from the seat to the top of the shoulder or the upper part of the head.

Seat Width
Proper seat wi dth enables the user to si t comfortably and pre­vents pr oblems from developing. While user i s seated on a flat surface, m easure from hi p to hi p. Fig. 8
The user should have enough room to prevent hi ps a nd thi ghs from rubbin g agai nst the frame. However, the chai r should not be too wi de or the user wi ll sli de ar ound a n d posture could be affected.

Seat Depth
Measur e from the m ost posteri or porti on of the buttocks to the back of the knee. Subtract from that measurement 1-2” to a llow adequa te clearance between the seat a nd the back of the knee.

Convai d manufactures two types of wheel locks: hand opera ted and foot opera ted. Check to see whi ch type of wheel locks a re on your chai r.

Three-Point Positioning Belt
The three-point posi tioni n g belt i s opti onal wi th every Convai d chai r. Adjust the belt so the user stays securely i n posi tion. The qui ck-release buckle i s a ttached to the crotch stra p, a n d joi ns the crotch stra p to both belts.

H-Harness with Padded Covers
H-harn ess shoulder stra ps help the user retai n upri ght tru nk posi ti on. To adj u st, i n sert the bolt at the end of the stra p through the gromm et hole i n the seat back. Grommet choi ce should be level wi th or hi gher than the top of the shoulders. Choose a hole that wi ll keep the user secure wi thout the stra p rubbin g agai nst the fa ce or neck. Dependi ng on the user’s degree of abi li ty or prescri pti on from a doctor or physi cal therapi st, the back angle may need adjustment. Adj usti ng the back angle may a lso a ffect the seat depth.
Parti ally fold chai r to r eli eve fabri c tensi on (see foldi ng i nstructions on pa ge 4). Un hook the Velcro® stri p at the back of the chai r connecting the seat fabri c to the back fa bri c. Use a wrench (7/16”) to remove the bolt connecting the seat tube to the back tube. Relocate to desired posi ti on and replace bolt. Repeat on other si de. Reattach the Velcro® stri p.

Footplate Height Adjustment
Seat-to-footplate height i s m easured from the back of the knee to the bottom of the heel. Feet or heels should rest comfortably on top of footplate. Fig. 24

Foot Positioners
Foot Posi ti oners may be cri ss-crossed over the foot to secure the whole foot Fig. 37 or can be converted i nto si mple ankle stra ps. To attach foot posi tioner, thread strap through footplate as shown i n Fig. 38 & 39, then bolt stra p to undersi de of footplate.

Anatomic Back Support Frame

Note: Convaid’s chairs provide a semi-contour fit around the body.
The user must be fitted correctly into the chair to achieve optimal posture and comfort.
Swing-Away Lateral Support with Scoliosis Strap
Single Flap
Adjustable trun k support stabili zes the trunk and m a intai ns mi d­li ne posi tioni ng. It can be pulled to one si de for scoli osi s correc­tion i f used wi th scoli osi s strap. Scoliosi s stra p comes stan da rd wi th a ll trunk su pports. Fig. 45A

Attaching Lateral Trunk Support Single Flap
1. Attach the Lateral Trunk Su pport to the chai r by w rappi ng the two rear straps around the back of the chai r a nd securi ng wi th Velcro®.
2. Attach the si ngle flap, by wr a ppi ng the strap on the left flap around the si de tubing of the frame, a nd securi ng wi th Velcro® (repeat steps on opposi te si de)
3. Thread the scoli osi s strap through the pla sti c loop on the left fla p, back through the plasti c loop on the opposi te end of the strap, and pull ti ght.
4. Bri ng the scoli osi s strap a cross the chest, thread i t through the plasti c loop on opposite fla p, a n d fa sten wi th Velcro®.
Note: The Lateral Trunk Support - Single Flap can be used to support either the left or right side of the trunk.
• To support the ri ght si de of the trunk, attach the support to the chai r wi th the double-sided Velcro® strap on the left si de. Detach the stra p on the ri ght fla p from the tubi n g, a nd ti ghten scoli osi s strap unti l desi red trun k posi ti oni ng i s obtai ned.

Fitting
The fi tting of the cushi on should be done by a cli n i cia n. When fi tted correctly, the cushi on wi ll help provi de sta ble support and promote good posture. Consult y our cli ni cian for questi ons regardi ng i ndi vi dual needs.
Select the cushi on si ze to match the seat wi dth and depth of the chai r. Measure the di stan ce between the back of the buttocks and the back of the knees. Subtra ct 1-2” to allow for adequate clearance between the seat and the back of the knees.
1. Apply wheel locks. Never leave occupi ed chai r unattended.
2. To i nstall the Seat Cushi on (and Ba ck) follow the detai led i nstructions found on page 33 i n thi s User Gui de.
3. Adjust the wheelchai r footrest hei ght so that the user’s legs rest fi rm ly but comfortably on the cushi on. Proper footrest a dj u stm ent wi ll enhance si tting comfort and help lower peak si tting pressur es. If appli cable, re-adjust a rmrest height a nd lateral trunk supports.

1. Waste Disposal
• Do not strap user too tight.
• Straps should not interfere with breathing or circulation
• Always apply wheel locks before letting go of the chair.
• If front edge of seat is at or forward of the point where tires touch the floor, avoid using front of seat tubes for support during entry or exit from chair to prevent tipping.
• Avoid using footplates for weight support during exit or entry of the chair.
The shi ppin g car ton should be kept for possi ble return to the ma nufacturer/servi ce faci li ty for repai r or m a i nten a n ce. Other pa per pa ckagi ng waste should be set asi de for recycli ng. For di sposi tion of replaced par ts or the complete chai r, the ma teri als should be separated i n to: plasti c, rubber, steel, a lum i num , etc., and set asi de for recycli n g.
2. Intended Use
This product i s i ntended for use by a person wi th physi cal di sabi li ti es w ho i s fre­quently or perm anently n on-ambulatory. The chai r i s always under the control and supervi si on of an atten da nt, and the occupan t should n ever be left una ttended.
3. Suitable Environment
The chai r i s i ntended for both i ndoor and outdoor use. I f the chai r i s used i n the ra i n, the excess wa ter should be wi ped off wi th a soft cloth. If the chai r i s splashed wi th mud or corrosi ve substances li ke sa lt water or roa d sa lt, the chai r should be wa shed clean wi th water, w i ped dry and a hypoallergeni c and bi odegrada ble lubri cant r eap­pli ed to the movi ng parts. The chai r should never go i nto seawater, as i t wi ll corrode areas that can not be wa shed clean. When goi ng fr om outsi de to i nsi de, clean a n y excess di rt or mud from the wheels to prevent soi li n g of i n si de envi ronment.

4. Safety Instructions

• Be aware of newly created sha r p edges.
• Frequ ently i nspect the a dj ustments on the frame and the posi tioni ng a ccessori es.
• Do not u se chai r after occu pa n t has outgrown i t.
• Do not i gnore mi nor m a lfuncti ons and m a intai n the chai r i n good operati ng condi tion. Moni tor the wheel locks (brakes) regularly a n d adjust as needed.
• When goi ng up a curb or step, face the chai r forward a nd ti lt back to li ft the front wheels over the cur b. Move forward a nd li ft the rear w heels over the curb.
• If and whenever possible and feasible, the rider should transfer out of the chair and into an approved vehicle seat and passenger restraint system.
However, i f a transfer i s not possi ble, use only desi gnated chai rs i n a movi ng vehicle whi ch contai n the Wheelchai r Tiedown a nd Occupant Restra i n System (WTORS) followi n g the requi rements of SAE J 2249. Follow ti e-down harn ess manufacturer’s i n structions carefully and refer to Convai d’s ‘Transi t Gui de’ for speci fi cs.

• When goi ng down a curb, a pproach the curb backwa rds. Lower the rear wheels down the curb and conti nue backwa r ds, ta ki ng the wei ght off the front wheels so they can be gently lowered.
• Ma intai n control of the chai r at a ll tim eswhi le goi ng up/down r a m p. Avoid steep slopes, pa r ti cularly wi th a heavy occu pa nt. If i n doubt, do not attem pt a descent unless a thi rd party i s pr esent to help m a i ntai n control of chai r.
5. Chair Maintenance
The followi ng m a i ntenance procedures should be conducted on a r egula r basi s: Exami ne your Convai d product vi sua lly from ti me to ti me for possi ble wear and tear. Teflon spr a y * should be appli ed to frame and m ovi ng pa rts to mai ntai n easy foldi ng and a dj ustment.
a) Tire Air Pressure: The ai r pressur e i n your ti r es should be checked WEEKLY, si nce low ai r pressure may affect brake a bi li ty.
b) Axles and Moving Parts: Axles and movi n g parts should be wi ped off WEEKLY w i th a sli ghtly m oi st cloth, to r emove dust, di rt and m u d. Spa ri ngly a pply a hi gh quali ty Teflon spa ry* a fter each clean i ng. Do NOT use WD-40, si li cone sprays or other lubri cant sprays a s they wi ll attract dust a nd di rt.

6. Cleaning and disinfection

Cleaning of frame:

All contact wi th sa lt water should be avoi ded. If the chai r i s used i n sa lt-water envi ronments corrosi on may occur. In the event of salt-wa ter exposure, the frame should be wi ped off wi th a moi st towel a s soon a s possi ble. Water a nd a soft cloth are suffi cient; lubri cant should be reappli ed to a ll movi ng parts.

Cleaning of wheels and brakes:
Wheels should be cleaned of di rt or mud after each use so a s to n ot i nterfere wi th pushi ng the chai r. The brakes are to be kept free of di rt or mud, so as not to i n terfere wi th locking. Wipe wheels and brakes wi th a m oi st cloth as needed a nd readjust brakes i f i ndi cated.
Cleaning of fabric cover:
Seat a nd back upholstery can be easi ly removed and re-attached to the chai r for washi ng. Use sta ndard detergent to wash fa bri c. Use the gentle cycle and cold wa ter. Hang dry ONLY, DO NOT pla ce i n clothes dryer a s thi s wi ll damage the seat a nd back upholstery.
Cushi oned parts can a lso be removed from chai r for washi ng or to wi pe off wi th a moi st cloth. Before re-attachi ng them to the chai r, ma ke sure they are completely dry.
Parts that a r e perma nently a ttached m a y be wi ped vi gorously wi th a moi st cloth. Allow suffi cient ti me to dry before placing u ser i n chai r.
7. Storage
Store your chai r i n a clean, dry area and a voi d exten ded exposure to moi sture. After extended stora ge peri ods, and before reuse, the enti re chai r needs to be servi ced, cleaned and di si nfected.
8. Re-use
Your Conva i d chai r should undergo a wi pe-down di si nfection before re-use. Please use a non-toxi c, bi odegradable di si n fectant soluti on sui table for surfa ce di si nfection.

12. Functional Tests
All four wheels should m a ke contact wi th the floor. Wi th the chai r empty, pu sh i t forwa rd on a smooth level surface wi th enough m omentum to travel si x feet (2 m). The chai r should not veer to the left or ri ght more than si x i nches (15 cm). Wheels should be free run ni ng and the wheel locks (brakes) adjusted to adequa tely secure the chai r. Followi ng the fold/unfold i nstructions, the chai r should fold/unfold smoothly wi thout undue effort. All fa steners should be secure. Fasteners on m ovi ng j oi nts should not be over ti ght. Seat fabri c should not be wi de-stretched or sa ggi ng. Posi ti oni ng accessori es should be correctly adjusted an d secure.
