Requirements relating to the flue
For both rear flue connections and top flue
connections the chimney must be able to
withstand temperatures of at least 350 °C.
Warning!
When the stove is in use certain surfaces
become very hot. Physical contact with
these surfaces can cause skin burns.
Pay particular attention also to the high
temperatures of the heat radiated through
the glass door. Do not place combustible
material closer than the recommended safe
distances. Failure to observe these safe distances can result in an uncon trolled fire.
A smouldering fire can cause gases and
fumes to ignite without warning, with the
risk of causing damage to both persons and
property.
IMPORTANT!
Always contact your local authority planning
office before installing a wood-burning stove
or fire-place.
The owner of the house is personally responsible for ensuring compliance with the mandatory safety requirements and must have the
installation approved by a qualified inspector.
Your local chimney sweep must also be informed about the installation as this will affect
the routines for regular chimney-sweeping
services.

Building permission
It may be necessary for you to apply for building
permission from your local planning authority before
installing a stove or erecting a chimney. Before starting installation work, make sure that you check which
regulations apply.

Structural support
Check to make sure that the floor is strong enough
to support the weight of the stove and chimney. If
you intend to locate the stove on standard wooden
floor joists, contact a professional builder to make
sure that the construction will withstand the load. If
the total weight does not exceed 400 kilos, it is not
usually necessary to reinforce the joists.
Floor plate
To protect the floor from sparks and falling embers
the stove must stand on a non-combustible surface
which extends at least 300 mm in front of the stove
and 100 mm along each side. As other statutory
requirements apply in some countries, we recommend that you consult the relevant authority or an
authorised chimney-sweep in your area.
Chimney
The draught in the chimney must generate a neg ative
pressure of at least 12 Pa. The draught is affected
both by the length and cross-sectional area of the
chimney, and by how well sealed the construction
is. The shortest recommended chimney length is
3.5 metres. The cross-sectional area of the chimney
must be approximately 150–200 cm2 (140–160 mm
in diameter).
Make sure that there are no gaps around soot hatches and flue-pipe connections.
Remember that the draught is reduced in flues with
sharp bends or horizontal sections. A horizontal flue
length of up to 1.0 metre is permissible, provided that
the vertical flue is at least 5.0 metres in height.
It must be possible to clean the flue throughout its
entire length, and the soot hatches must be easily
accessible.

Through the external wall.
Indirect air supply through the external wall.
Through the floor and foundation slab.
Through a suspended floor/wall-and-cavity
foundation.
Remove the partly punched metal cover with a
hammer.
Important! To prevent condensation in air ducts
which pass through heated areas, the duct must be
insulated with 30 mm of mineral wool covered with
a proprietary moisture seal (plastic vapour diffusion
retarder).
It is important to seal carefully around the duct
where it passes through the wall or floor. Use jointing compound. For ducts longer than 1.0 metre, the
diameter must be increased to 100 mm, and the size
of the vent increased correspondingly.
A 1.0 metre length of insulated ducting for combustion air is available as an optional extra.
Air supply
Combustion air for the stove can be supplied
through a duct directly from outside, or indirectly
through a vent in the wall of the room where the
stove is installed.
The drawings on the right show various alternative
methods of supplying the stove with air.
Before fitting an air supply duct to the air inlet,
the heat reflector under the stove body must be
re moved.
The air duct connection on the stove has an external
diameter of 64 mm.
The stove has two partly punched covers to provide
the option of leading the air supply duct through the
rear panel or the base-plate.

Lift up the smoke baffle and
re move the front of the side section. If necessary, move the castiron firebed slightly to the side to
make this easier.
Continue by removing the rear of
the side section in the same way.
Lift the smoke baffle out and remove the remaining sections.
Lift the grate plate at one of its edges from the
lugs.
Remove the ash-pan with cover. Leave the parts
disassembled until the base has been installed and
the stove has been positioned. Reinstall the parts in
reverse order when the stove has been constructed
and is in position.
Unpacking
To start with, leave the stove body screwed in place
on the delivery pallet. Remove the components and
accessories supplied in the delivery package and
place them on one side. Dismantle all the loose
components from the stove body (log-guard/firebars, fire-box surround, grate disc, cast-iron fire-bed
and ash-pan). Then remove the stove body from the
pallet.
Warning!
The stove body may tip forwards before the
base-plate has been fitted. For this reason it is
important not to unscrew the stove body from
the pallet until all loose components have been
removed.

Stoves are supplied from the factory ready for
connecting to a top flue. To prepare the stove for
connection to a rear flue, the connecting collar
and covering cap need to change places.
Top flue connection to a chimney
When installing the chimney, please refer to the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Below we explain how
to connect the chimney to the stove.
Rear flue connection to a brick-lined chimney
Mark out the centre of the hole to be made in the wall for a rear flue connection. Check the height to make
sure that the hole aligns with the chimney connection on the rear of the stove.
Make a hole at least 180 mm in diameter and then secure the flue collar in place in the wall using heat-proof
mortar (not supplied). Allow the mortar to dry before connecting the stove to the flue.
Fit the connecting sleeve between the stove and
the flue collar in the wall. Make sure that the gasket
does not work loose from its position. Seal the joint
between sleeve and collar with sealing rope, or use
heat-resistant sealant for a tighter seal.
Important!
When connecting to a top flue it is important to fit the
hot air vent in place before connecting the chimney flue.
Top flue connection
Slide the flue base over the collar. Make sure that
the seal round the collar is not dislodged. If further
sealing material is required, heat-resistant sealant
may be used.

Fitting the surround for Contura 650
650
Lay the stove down on its back on the pallet. Secure
the base-plate in place with the four female screws
supplied. Fit them from the inside of the legs into the
lugs on the base-plate. Loosening the screws holding the legs in place on the body of the stove may
make assembly easier. Do not tighten the screws
until the stove is standing on a flat surface.
Important! The heat reflecting plate must be fitted
underneath the body of the stove if the area below
is to be used as a log-box. The heat reflector can
be removed by turning it to the left until it slides
free from the lower set of screws holding the legs in
place. The heat reflector is hooked back in place on
the screws by turning it to the right.
Each of the front angle brackets is fitted in place
with two Phillips screws. The rear angle brackets
are fitted with Phillips screws and nuts through the
innermost hole of the fire-box.
The rear panel is fitted between the brackets on the
stove with four self-tapping screws. For rear flue
connections the punched plate in the rear panel
must be tapped out with a hammer. The top screws
secure the angle brackets and the rear panel to the
back of the stove.

87
GB
Undo the screws to the angle brackets at the front of
the construction. Fit the heat reflector by sliding the
rear end into the gap between the rear panel and the
fire-box. Then ease the reflector forwards, bending it
so that it hooks into place under the screws. Tighten
the screws.
650
Hold the side panel approximately 20 mm above
the base panel and turn the side panel’s front edge
around the edge of the leg. Align and depress the
side panel end over the base panel’s shaft pin.
Secure the side panels with a Phillips screw and
wash er. Adjust the panels so that they fit snugly
aroun d the stove body on the front edge and the rear
panel at the back.
Fit the metal shelf, soapstone shelf or oven unit in accordance with the instructions for the various options on
pages 99 and 100. This must be done before the metal or soapstone top is put in place.

supplied. Place the hot-shelf in the heating compartment, using the adjustment screw at the back to make sure
that the shelf is horizontal. There is a narrow groove on each side of the heating compartment, which is used
for holding the rear cover panel in place.
Slide the pressed metal edge of the cover panel into
the groove on one side. Bend the panel carefully and
push the other edge into the groove on the opposite
so that it is at the same height as the mantel. When
dismantling the metal hot-shelf, remove the panels
in the reverse order.
Remove the screw on the top hinge of the door.
Replace this screw with the threaded hexagonal
pin. This pin serves as the lower hinge for the oven
door. Fit the screws into the upper hinge from below.
Screw them in no more than two or three turns.
Hold the oven door in place on the threaded pin.
Hook the top hinge in place and fix one of the
screws loosely. Close the oven door and adjust it so
that it aligns horizontally. Then open it carefully and
tighten both screws.
Place the baking sheet in the oven. If necessary,
adjust the height of the baking sheet by turning the
adjusting screw at the bottom of the oven unit.

Installing the hot-shelf (optional)
Place the base slab in the heating compartment, adjusting the screw at the back edge to make sure that the
slab is perfectly horizontal. Then place paper from the packaging over the base slab to protect the surface from
scratches as you gently push the top section into place.
Installing the convector fascia (optional)
Fit the convector fascia with the retaining brackets
angled as shown.
Open the stove door when fitting the convector fascia. First ease the fascia up so that the groove hooks
onto the top. Then push in the lower edge so that
the bottom edges of the brackets rest on the stove.
Then adjust the fascia so that it is centred over the
door. If the fascia panel needs to be moved in or out,
the top edges of the retaining brackets can be bent
as required.

Installing the base C 650 (optional)
Screw the 2 screws in each leg at the front edge,
leave 3-4 mm between the screw’s head and leg.
Press in the base’s protruding bent edge between
the side panel and the heads of the screws.
Installing the base C 660, C 670 (optional)
Press in the base’s protruding bent edge between
the soapstone/tile and the legs of the insert.

Installing the drawer (optional)
Slacken off the rear Allen screw three turns. Place
the pull-out unit on the base panel.
Hook the pull-out unit over the rear Allen screws.
Screw in the unit.
Install the drawer on the pull-out unit using the four
Allen screws. Adjust the drawer so that it is centrally
positioned, then tighten the screws.
Important!
When installing the drawer, the knockout in the
back panel must always be removed for the
suppl y of convection air.
