The FX-DS540-AP/APP is a wireless LAN PC Card using OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) in the 5 GHz band. It conforms to t he wireless LAN sta ndard speci fication IE EE 802.11a. The FX-D540-AP/APP enables high-speed communication at up to 54 Mbps when used in combination with the FX-DS540-PCC/PCC2, the PC card model in the FX-DS540 series.
The FX-DS540-AP and FX-DS540-APP are functionally equivalent to each other. The FX-D540 series is an IEEE 802.11a compliant, high-speed wireless LAN series providing a
maximum transmission speed of 54 Mbps and rob ust security while inheri ting the unique fea tures highly evaluated mainly by business users such as IP tunneling and roaming. It not only meets the needs for faster transmission speeds of wireless LANs but also provides a new environment of a wireless LAN network, for example, by letting the 54 Mbps wireless LAN and 11 Mbps wireless LAN coexist seamlessly.
The FX-D540-AP is powered from a wall outlet ( 100 VAC) . It can al so be powere d via a ne twor k cabl e when using the UTP cable power separator unit POW-SP20 and th e power supply un it POW-CB20 o r POW-CBM44.
The FX-DS540-APP can be powered via a netw ork cab le when using the power supply unit POW-CB20 or POW-CBM4. It can also be powered from a wall outlet (100 VAC) through the AC adapter.
This document explains how to use the FX-DS540- AP/APP. Be sure to read it carefully so that you can use the product correctly.
The FLEXLAN DS540 series employs a wireless LAN chip manufactured by Atheros Communications Inc. The main board, firmware, and enhancements are developed by CONTEC based on its abundant experience and technical skills in LAN.

Features

- High-speed link at 54 Mbps max, providing throughput more than five times higher than that of the 11 Mbps wireless LAN.
- With the 11 Mbps compact flash wireless card FX-Ds110-CFC (separately available) plugged, the FX-DS540-AP/APP can serve as a dual-band access point that accommodates the CONTEC FLEXLAN DS100 series and 11 Mbps wireless LAN devices in the 2.4 GHz band as well.
- High-speed RISC chip integrated, providing processing speed four times faster than that of the CONTEC’s conventional product, getting the full benefit of the high-speed pr ocessi ng capability of a 54 Mbps wireless LAN, and enabling smooth operation free of stress even in dual-band mode.

Outline of the FLEXLAN-DS540 series

The FLEXLAN DS540 series is a wireless LAN P C Card adopti ng OFDM in the 5 GH z b and, which has the following features.

Features of the FLEXLAN-DS540 ser ie s

IEEE 802.11a compliant, 5 GHz band wireless LAN The FLEXLAN DS540 series conforms to the new wireless LAN standard specification “IEEE 802.11a”
that applies to the OFDM encoding scheme in the 5 GHz band with less radio interference. The 5 GH band wireless LAN provides a clearer radio communications environment than the 2.4 GHz band wireless LAN.
The FLEXLAN DS54 0 s er ies is cl ass if ied as “rad i o equip ment for a radio station in a low-power d ata communications system” defined in the Wireless Telegraphy Act, requiring no radio transmission license.
Data transfer rate of 54 Mbps The product switches its data rate automatically to 54, 48, 36, 24, 18, 12, 9, or 6 Mbps depending on the radio conditions. It will be provided with a link speed setting feature focusing on speed and stability.
Robust security provided The FLEXLAN DS540 series supports the 64-, 128, and 152-bit types of WEP(RC4). Using WEP in combination with WSL (Wireless Security Link with a proprietary cryptography) provides more robust security. WEP can be used single-handedly, too. The FLEXLAN DS540 series will also support IEEE
802.1x specifying the latest protocol for security.
Capable of using 11 Mbps and 54 Mbps systems at the same time You can install a 54 Mbps wireless LAN system while maintaining an existing 11 Mbps wireless LAN only by inserting an 11 Mbps wireless CF card of FX-DS110-CFC (separately available) at an access point. A flexible system can be implemented, for example, by constructing an 11 Mbps wireless LAN in the open air where the use of the 5 GHz band is restricted by the Wireless Telegraphy Act and a 54 M bps wireless LAN indoors.
Capable of interconnection with a Wi-Fi compliant wireless LAN device The FLEXLAN DS540 series can communicate, us ing basic feature s, with a Wi-F i compliant device such as a non-FLEXLAN wireless LAN card, wireless LAN integrated notebook PC. With this feature, you can get the most out of wireless LAN resources.
Note! This feature does not guarantee the connection of the FX-DS540-PCC to all o f Wi-Fi compliant devices.
Enhancements such as IP tunneling can be used with a p roduct other than the FLEXLAN series.
Multi-channel support Four channels (channels 34, 38, 42, and 46) can be used. Using different channels for wireless networks adjacent to each other prevents radio interference and improves the throughput of either network.
IP tunneling function *1 Even when a wireless terminal with a fixed IP address assigned moves to (roam) a segment different in IP beyond the router, you can continue commun ication without making chan ges to settings.

IP Tunneling Function
(To be supported in the near future)
In TCP/IP, packets belonging to different network groups cannot normally be used. However, a technique called tunneling or IP tunnel tech nology ca n be used to tem pora rily modify packets be longing to different network groups so that they can be used. This technique can enable user units to communicate with the wired LAN as usual even when connected via an AP from a different network group.
The following example shows how u ser unit UU1, wh ich belo ngs to netw ork group A, ca n connec t via a router to terminal PC1, also in network group A, despite UU1 being connected to the LAN via AP2 which belongs to network group B. The IP tunneling function will be supported in the near future by updating the firmware (at no charge). The latest firmware is available at the CONTEC’s web site (http://www.contec.co.jp/en).

MAC Address Filtering

MAC address filtering is the function to permit only the user units whose MAC address has been registered for an AP to log in to the AP. Using this function can reject an attempt to log in to an AP by an unidentified user unit not registered in the AP.
Figure 2.4 shows a sample image of connections under control of MAC address filtering. The example assumes that the MAC addresses of UU1 and UU2 are r egistered in the M AC address filtering l ist for the AP while UU3’s MAC ad dr es s is not regi st er ed in th e li st . In this cas e, UU1 an d UU2 ca n log in to the AP but UU3 cannot. To permit UU3 to log in to the AP, the AP’s administrator has to add the UU3’s MAC address to the MAC address filtering list for that AP.

Bridge Packet Control

Bridge packet control is the function that allows an AP to pass only data from those network devices whose MAC address has been registered for the AP to its clients. Using this function can restrict communication between user units.
Figure 2.5 shows a sample im age of co nnecting under br idge packe t cont rol. The exam ple ass umes tha t, for bridge packet control, only the MAC address of th e router is register ed in AP1 and AP2. In this c ase, UU1, UU2, and UU3 can exchange data with the external network through the router while they cannot communicate with one another. When the router is connected to the Internet, UU1, UU2, and UU3 can access the Internet while they cannot communicate directly with each other.

Figure 2.5 Bridge Packet Control
If the bridge packet control list for the AP contains no entry with the bridge packet control function enabled, communication is unconditionally permitted between a wired unit and a wireless unit but rejected between wireless units.
When the bridge packet control list for AP1 and AP2 contains no entry in the above example, UU2 and UU3 can communicate with each other via AP1 and AP2 while UU1 and UU2 cannot.
Bridge packet control is suitable for a wireless LAN constructed in a public space.

2 Functions and Wireless Link Mode

Wireless Link Mode Descriptions

The AP has three wireless link modes. The available functions and network configurations differ depending on the mode. Use the wireless link mode most suitable to the type of network you are constructing. The factory defa ult setting i s sim ple m ode. Chapters 4 and 5 describe the soft ware settin g procedures for the wireless link modes and related items.

Standard Infrastructure Mode

In this mode, each access point (AP) can accommodate user units (stations) to make up a network. This mode allows the use of multiple AP's to configure wide-area wireless LAN's. All communication between wireless terminals must go through an AP.

In the above standard infrastructure mode, all wireless terminals communicate via unit type APs. Roaming functions are supported, allowing logged in on any unit type AP.
For IP tunneling to work co rrect ly, one of th e APs must b e s etup as th e maste r AP (See “Setti n g Ite m List” in Chapter 5).
-Advantages (1) Capable of accommodating APs as stations. (2) If the IP tunneling function is used, communication can con tinue v i a diff erent routers without
needing to change IP address. (3) Allows log-in restrictions on unit type AP's (security function). (4) Capable of improving security based on WSL (Wireless Security Link)

Roaming The roaming function which allows mobile us er units to switch lo g-in b etween multiple APs can only be
used. Roaming can be used to co nst ruc t larg e sc ale w ire le ss L AN s.
IP tunneling This function modifies the IP address so that units can connect to the desired network group even via.
It can be used in the Advanced Infrastructure and Standard Infrastructure modes.
Station AP connection A station (unit type ST) indicates an AP managed (logged in) by another AP; it is used to serve as a
bridge.
SNMP This function enables remote management by software that supports SNMP. Available in all modes.
Log collection function This function lists the wireless terminals logged in to the AP and collects times and other event
information. See Chapter 6 for details.

2 Functions and Wireless Link Mode
MAC address filtering This function enables connection of only the terminals whose MAC address has been registered.
Data encryption This function encrypts wireless data. For encryption, two security protocols are available: WSL
(Wireless Security Link: proprietary cryptography) and WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). WSL and WEP can be used at the same time. Note, however, that devices using WSL and those not using it cannot communication with each other.
IEEE802.1x(EAP-TLS) This function performs authentication using digital certificates. After authentication, the AP
dynamically broadcasts the WEP key. The function of IEEE 802.1X cannot be used when the unit type of the AP is “station”.
