answer "Yes."
In addition, an Acrobat PDF version of this guide will be installed in the same directory as the HMU softwar e. To load the PDF file, you must have a copy of the Acrobat Exchange program. If you do not already have this program on your system, i t can be obtained from Adobe from their website:
When successfully installed, the Compaq icon will appear in your Program list.
NOTE: Right-click HMU.exe and select Create Shortcut to create a shortcut that displays on your desktop.
Configuring HMU for Your Site
Before starting HMU installation:
A Compaq-managed proxy master must be connected to your Ethernet
network.
The Compaq Hub 12 Management Module must be installed in the
Compaq Storage Hub 12 Hu b.
www.adobe.com.
The Compaq e quipment chosen to be a proxy master must be connected
to the LAN with an Ethernet connection, and must have proxy master set in its network parameters.
About HMU.log
Event information is displayed during each HMU session and is saved in HMU.log on shutdown. By default, the path to HMU.log is “C:\Program
Files\Compaq\HMU\HMU.log,” or an alter native path if one was named during installation. In addition, a different path can be specified using the Log File Config uration dialog box. This path is stored in t he Window 95/98 or NT system registry. The file’s location can not be moved wi thout first removing and reinstal ling HMU.
You can configure HMU to overwrite a single log file at the start of each session or to write a file to the limit size and then create another log. If the HMU.log file is deleted, a new one will be created the next time HMU is started. You can also view the HMU.log file from a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel since that program uses the comma-separated-variable (csv) format.
About HMU.dat
The topological data for a HMU session is stored in an archive file fou nd on
the default path, “C:\Program Files\Compaq\HMU\HMU.dat”, or at an alternative path if one was entered during installation. The IP address for the proxy management agent for each loop and the user-entered data for unmanaged devices are always written to this file whenever HMU is shut down, or when the Save Topological Data command is selected. When HMU
is started the next time, this data is retrieved from the discovery can be performed automatically on each IP address in the file. Once all loops have been discove red, the unmanaged devices for the loops are added to the views.
NOTE: Keep the HMU.dat file backed up if more than one loop is being managed in the event unmanaged devices are added to a hub. Data can be saved at any time.
Understanding Port Relationships
The relationship between the ports in HMU is an essential part of the configurat i on process. The following sections detail the proper wa y to configure the ports.
Getting Started 1-5
HMU.dat file and
Inter-Hub Communication Interface (ICI) ID Numbers
As explained in Appendix A (see the “Sim ple Network Management Protocol” section), while HMU may communicate with the proxy master through SNMP over Ethernet, the proxy master communi cates with its slave-managed devices using the Compaq ICI communications pr otocol. As a result, the various devices are assigned an ICI ID number. You can view these numbers on each individual managed device by looking at the Device V iew “System ID Tab” (see Chapter 3, “Managing from Device View” for specific information about device view activities).
The device agent, designated as the HMU management agent, is assigned an ICI ID1. The first managed slave added to the network i s numbered ICI ID2 and the next managed slave is assigned ICI ID3. These numbers are sequentially assigned as managed devices are added.
1-6 Compaq Storage Hub 12 Management Utilities Hardware and Software User Guide
Downlink and Uplink Ports
The Downlink and Uplink Ports are defined by the physical cabling tha t exists between devi ces in the management hierarchy. Downli nk Ports or Parent Ports are ports on the higher level devices to which a device lower in the hi erarchy is attached. These can appear in both proxy masters as well as cascaded devices. Uplink Ports or C hi ld Ports are the port numbers on the lower-l evel device that attachment is made to.
The figure below shows a sample SAN configuration that illustrates the relationships between ports.

Initial HMU Startup
The first time HMU is started, the IP address of a Compaq-managed proxy master devic e at your site must be entered. I f you do not have that address, check with a system administrator so that you have it before launching HMU. Thereafter, that IP address will be stored in a file in the default path,
“C:\Program Files\Compaq\HMU\”, or at an alternative path if one was entered during installation. It will not need to be entered again unless it changes or a different pro xy master is to be managed.

The next part of the process is to verify the SNMP and to set Community Names. If the Community Names are still set to the defaults, HMU will continue with discovery.
NOTE: The default get Community Name is “public”, while the default set Community Name is “private”. If these do not work, check with a system administrator who can give you the current Community Names. To set Community Names, see Appendix C, “Configuring the Management Module.”
1-8 Compaq Storage Hub 12 Management Utilities Hardware and Software User Guide
The discovery process can take several seconds, during which time the HMU progress status indicator a ppears. It will indicate which device it is polling, so if there is more than one, there will be changes in progress. It will normally time out in 60 seconds, but if it appears to be taking too long, click on Cancel to stop it. Wait at least 60 seconds before canceling. The first time HMU is started, allow the system to time out, in order to get a better idea of how long to wait in the future if a problem occurs.
Figure 1-3. Progress status indicator
The discovery process establishes communication links with the proxy master. Other managed devices connected to the proxy master b y Fibre Channel are found automatically. The Device Name, Location, Contact, Serial Number, and Device Count fields are filled in, but the Location and Contact fields will be empty if not previously entered manually.
Once discovery is complete, the Update SAN View button (shown in the lower area of the figure below) becomes active.

Resolution: Finally, the DisplayNetwork View tab pages also contain two separate fault diagnostics. The first is Loop Utilization Alert and the other is Diagnostic Tools. Selections in these pages i nclude the following:
Set Utilization Alert Percentage - This feature permits the setting
of the network utilization rate to the point at which an alarm is sounded. The default value is a 90 percent utilization, but it can be increased or decreased easily.
Diagnostic Tools - This is a set of aut omatic diagnostic and repair
tools that initiates the following two diagnostics:
q
Loop Initialization Diagnostic - This d iag nostic will appear whenever one or more devices are unable to initialize properly. The tool continues to restart the initialization process. The diagnostic will determine which devices are at fault, isolate them, and identify them.
q
Broadcast Storm D iagnostic – This is related to the Loop Initialization diagnostic. Broadcast Storm Diagnostic will hunt down and isolate any devic e that is broadcasting a c ontinuous stream of LIP(F7,x) or other primitives.
SAN View Tab
The SAN View Devices by Connection window (shown in Figure 2-1) is the first display that appears once the discovery process a nd topologica l updates are completed. It presents a graphical presentation of the overal l network, a nd also permits access to all the other features of HMU. The SAN View tab is the main window of HMU.
At the top, the managed master device acting as the proxy master displa ys its IP address. T he managed an d unmanaged slave devices display a port identifier that is the Downlink Port number of the parent device to which it is attached. The status of Inter-Hub Communication Interface (ICI) devices is represented by the color of their icons as listed below.

Green represents normal status.
Yellow indicates a change in status, such as a port being automatically
bypassed.
Red indicates a critical or major fault, such as a power supply,
temperature, fan fault, or loss of communication with the device.

In this display, the devices are sorted alphabetically. The Status column indicates one of the following: Normal, Minor, Maj or, Warning, Critical, and Not Managed. Both views display ICI-co nnected devices that can be managed, in addition to any unmanaged devices t hat have been manually added to a network.
The Context Menu
Most HMU activities can be accomplished from the HMU Context Menu. This menu is selected by right clicking on either of the SAN View tab windows. Specific features and functions of the Context Menu depend upon which wind ow and type of device are highlighted.
For example, if the hub repre s entation is right clicked, the HMU Context Menu shown in Figure 2-3 appears. In this case, the user is only permitted to perform act i ons that are related to adding, deleting, discovering devices and more.

If the mouse is moved to one of the icons representing a device and right clicked, the description of that device c hanges to white lettering on a blue field and a differ ent version of t he Context menu appears. Thi s menu reflects the control functions available in that device alone, as shown in the figure below. In the illustration, the proxy master hub has been selected, and as a result, several funct ions are enabl ed. Other devic es in the network might have fewer choices enabled, but each menu is appropriate for the device selected.

Display Device View
The first item in the Context Menu is Display Device View, which selects the Device View GUI interface.
Display Network View
Clicking this item selects a set of four tab windows that display a wealth of information about the functioning of the SAN. Some of these tabs allow control of specific functions and parameters as well.
Network Status Tab
The first tab, shown in the figure below, is the Network Stat us tab. This tab displays inf ormation in a table format.

Summary infor mation appears across the top of the window. This includes t he status of the loop, as well as information about initialization. The little icon near the top shows the network status in color and with a nearby text message. The colors of the icon are the same as used in the SAN View tab page.
Below, the status of each port on each managed device in the network appears, showing one port per line. This informat ion includes the number of t he device the port is o n, the port number and status of that port as well as the numbe r of LIPs that have occurred. This information is particula rly useful whe n determining devices that display atypical behavior . Additional information includes the AL_PA of the device that port is connected to (if there is one), as well as Loop ID. The Device name may also appear if it is a managed device.
