that you use Compaq Insi ght Manager X E and that the system deter mines that
the supported components have degraded below predetermined reliabilit y
threshold s within the product warranty period.
Server Features 1-11
When Compaq Insight Manager XE alerts you that a component may be
eligible for Pre-Failure Warranty replacement, follow the on-screen
instructions or contact a Compaq authorized service provider in your area. A
yellow status indicator on the Compaq Insight Ma nager XE control panel
signals that a component is in a pre-failure condition and should be replaced.

Server Configuration an d Mana gem en t

Compaq offe rs an extensive set of feat ures and optional tools to support
effective server management and configuration. This section provides an
overview of the following server ma nagement fea tures that are detailed in
Chapter 9, “Server Configuration and Utilities.”

Integrated Features

ROM-Based Setup Utility ( RBSU)
RBSU performs a wide range of configuration activities and provides
access to system settings for system devices, operating system selection, boot control ler order, and online s pare memory.
Redundant ROM supp or t
The ProLiant M L370 Generation 2 server contains tw o 1-MB ROMs
containing a current vers ion of the ROM and a previous version of the ROM. If the first ROM corrupts, the system defaults to the previous version to maximize server availability and performance.
ROMPaq Utility
Flash ROM capability enables you to upgrade the firmware (BIOS) with
system or option ROMPaq utilities.
Remote ROM Flash Utility
Smart Components for Remote ROM Fla sh enables Microsoft
Windows NT 4.0 and Wind ows 2000 operating system administrators to efficiently upgrade and manage system and array controller ROMs.
ROM legac y USB support
For ProLiant ML370 Genera tion 2 servers configured with an operating
system that pr ovides USB support, the ROM supports USB devices including keyboard and mouse. For information about operating systems currently providing US B support, refer to the opera ting system support matrix on the Compaq website:
ftp.compaq.com/pub/products/servers/os-support-matrix-310.pdf

Software Tools and Utilities

Compaq SmartStart for Servers CD
The SmartStart for Servers CD is the recommended tool for loading
system software, achieving a well-integrated server, and ensuring maximum dependabilit y and supportability. The Sm artStart CD a l so contains diagnostic utilities and ROMPa q tools.
SmartStart Diskette Builder
The SmartStart Diskette Builder is a utility that uses data stored on the
SmartStart CD to create support diskettes. You can create support diskettes for specific configuration needs or for software that cannot be used directly from the SmartStart CD.
Server Features 1-13
SmartStart Scr ipting Toolkit
The SmartStart Scripting Toolkit contains a set of DOS-based utilities
that enable you to configure and deploy servers in a customized, predictable, and unattended manner. These utilities provide scripted server and ar ray replicat i on for mass server deployment and dup l icate the configuration of a configured source server onto target systems with minimum user interaction.
Compaq Insight Manager XE
Compaq Insight Manager XE is installe d fr om the
Compaq Management CD. It is an easy-to-use, intuitive software util ity designed for collecting server information including fault conditions, performance , security, remote management, and recovery serv i ces.
Compaq Diagnostics Utili ty
The Compaq Diagnostics Utility displays informatio n about the server’s
hardware and tests the system to ensure that it is operating properly. If you used SmartStart to install your operating system, you can access the Diagnostics Utility from the SmartStart CD.
Automatic Server Recovery-2 (ASR-2)
ASR-2 enables the server to boot automatically from either the
operating system or from Compaq utilities. If there is a critical system failure, ASR-2 automatically restarts the server and can be config ured t o page a designated system administrator.
Integrated Management Log (IML)
The IML provides a detailed log of key system events. This log also
monitors the server health log and is accessible from Compaq Insight Manager XE and your Remot e Insight Li ghts-Out Edi tion option.
Multi-Initiator Configuration Utility
The Multi-Initiator Configuration Utility e nables administrators to
configure the Integrated Dual Channel Ultra3 SCSI controller for support of Compaq storage and clusteri ng options.
For more detailed information about these tools an d utilities, see Chapter 9,
“Server Configuration and Utilities,” or refer to the SmartStar t d ocumentation,
the Server Setup and Managem ent Pack, or the Documentat i on CD shippe d
with your server.

Security Features

Security provisions for ProLiant ML370 G eneratio n 2 servers include both hardware and software features:
Hardware (tower server only)
G Front bezel and access panel key lock
CAUTION: Unlock the front bezel before attempting to remove the access panel. Failure to do so causes damage to the server.
G Power supply lock slots

Software security features are configured through RBSU. For additional
information about these security features, refer to the Documentation CD or
the SmartStart CD that ship with your server.

Diagnostic Tools

Software and firmware diagnostic tools available for Compaq
ProLiant ML370 Generation 2 servers include:
Power-On Self-Test (POST)

Planning the Server Installation
To ensure maximum performance and availability from your Compaq
ProLiant ML370 Generation 2 server, plan your o perating environment before
beginning server installation.

Optimum Environment

Peak server performance depends in part on the environment you select for installing your server or servers. Select a location that meets standard environmental requirements for the following:
Space and airflow
Power
Electrical grounding
Temperature

Space and Airflow Requirements

To allow for servicing and adequate airflow, observe the following spatial requireme nts when deciding where to install your Compaq, Telc o, or third-party rack:
Leave a minimum clearance of 63.5 cm (25 inches) in front of the rack.
Leave a minimum clearance of 76.2 cm (30 inches) in the back of the
rack.
Leave a minimum clearance of 121.9 cm (48 inches) from the back of
the rack to the rear of another rack or row of racks.
Compaq servers draw in cool air through the front door and expel warm air through the rear door. The refore, the front and rear rack doors must be adequately ventilated to allow ambient room air to enter the cabinet, and the rear door must be adequately ventilated to allow the warm air to escape from the cabinet.
IMPORTANT: Do not block the ventilation openings.
