Ethernet Switch
NEW PRODUC T!
February 1998
THE COMPAQ
Compaq introduces the Netelligent 5226A
Ethernet Switch with 24 10Base-T ports, two
10/100Base-TX uplink ports, and two modular
uplink ports for additional 10/100Base-TX or
100Base-FX ports. The 10/100Base-TX uplink
ports, both fixed and modular, are auto-sensing.
In addition to full SNMP management support, the
Netelligent 5226A supports VLAN and RMON
(groups 1, 2, 3, and 9). Each Netelligent 5226A
switch also includes Compaq Netelligent
Management Software (CNMS), so the user can
immediately configure the switch and get detailed
performance activity information.
Each port on the Netelligent 5226A is
conf igurable for ful l or half duplex operatio n.
An optional dual redundant power supply provides
reliability in the event of power loss in one of the
power supplies.
These enterprise-c l ass fea tures are now avail able
at a price that is affordable for medium and large
workgroup networks! The Netelligent 5226A
swit ch offers aggressive pricin g, high port density,
and ma ximu m network rel iability. C ombined with
the Netelligent 5708 100Base-TX and 100BaseFX switches, Ethernet and Fast Ethernet hubs, and
10/100Base-TX controllers, the Netelligent 5226A
rounds out the complete desktop to backbone
networking solution from Compaq.

issues.
À
Rem ote m on it oring (RMON) gives the management
system the capability to remotely monitor the switch
for diagnostic pu rposes.
À
Provi d es high-sp eed connections (TX and/or F X) to
backbones, servers, or other 100Mb/s devices.
À
10/100Base-TX ports are dual-spe e d and auto-s e nsing
providing flexibility in connectivity.
À
Switching instructions implemented in hardware
rather than firmware–prov idi ng highe r perfo rmance ,
reliability, and lower cost.
À
1.05Gb/s backplane allows switch to move mass
amounts of data at full wire-speed data rates.
À
Provides dedicated bandwidth for every port at full
wire-speed data rates.
À
Increases network transfer rate up to 20Mb/s on
10Base-T ports and 200Mb/s on 100Base-TX and
100Base-FX ports.
À
Provides users the ability to keep the switch operable
in the event one of the power supplies fails, offering
additional peace of mind.
À
Flexible SNMP network mana gem ent t ool that ena bles
Netellig ent customers to manag e their network.
Supports fault, performance, and configuration
management of all manageable Netelligent hubs,
switches, and rout ers.
À
Enables monitoring/management of the switch via any
SNMP application.
À
Enables management of switch via standard Telnet
application (over the LAN or via the Internet).
À
Optimizes performance and allows set up of redundant
links for maximum up-time.

SAGE SCENARIOS
À
Customer has a fiber backbone, is upgrading hubs from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet, and needs a vehicle for the
legacy Ethernet to talk to the new Fast Ethernet users:
– Customer installs a Netelligent 5226A switch and connects the Ethernet hubs to the 10Base-T ports and
the Fast Ethernet hubs to the 10/100Base-TX ports.
– Customer installs the optional 100Base-FX module for the Netelligent 5226A switch to attach to the
corporate fiber backbone and to fiber Smart Uplinks on Netelligent Fast Ethernet hubs.
À
Customer has a segmentable Ethernet hub or hub stack, and would like to communicate between the segments
via a switch:
– Customer installs a Netelligent 5226A switch and connects each shared segment to the 10Base-T ports on
the 5226A.
– Customer can then connect up to four file servers to the 100Mb/s uplink ports on the 5226A or use one
100Mb/s port to connect to the corporate backbone.

SAGE SCENARIOS
À
Customer wants to implement “10Mb/s Switched” to the desktop to improve user performance and requires
high-level management features such as RMON and VLAN, as well as multiple Fast Ethernet uplinks for
servers, backbones, and other Fast Ethernet devices:
– Customer installs Netelligent 5226A switches and connects up to 24 10Base-T workstations per
switch.
– Using the two fixed 10/100Base-TX ports on each 5226A, the customer connects to a high-speed
server and/or another switch (Netelligent 5226 or 5226A).
– Customer then installs the 100Base-FX uplink modules to connect to a fiber backbone.
