Setting up the scanner
When unpacking, verify that you have received the scanner, Installation CD containing
the software installer and this manual, a USB cable, calibration cards, and cleaning
paper. If any components are missing, contact COMPanion by calling
1-800-347-6439 or 1-800-347-4942.
Prior to connecting the scanner to your computer you must install the software and
driver from the CD included with your scanner. Place the CD in your CD drive. From
within Windows open My Computer and then open your CD drive. Double click on the
file named DL Scanner Setup.exe to launch the installer. You should first be greeted
with a KeepnTrack splash screen. Click Next (Image 1).
Click Next to continue from the welcome screen (Image 2).
After reviewing the End User License Agreement, click Yes to accept the terms stated
within and proceed (Image 3). If you select No, you will be unable to continue with
the installation, and the Drivers License Scanner will not be installed on your
computer.
Next, select a destination directory on your computer where you wish to install the
Drivers License Scanner files. If you wish to install to a path other than the default
shown click Browse… and select another location. COMPanion Corporation
recommends installing to the default directory. Once you have selected the
installation directory, click Next to continue (Image 4).
Image 4
In the next step, you will need to select the components you wish to install. The
Drivers License Installer package is broken down into two main components:
1) The files required for the Browser Plug-in, or Active X Control.
2) The drivers required for the scanner hardware to function.

Select the components you wish to install by placing a check mark in the box
provided and then click Next to continue (Image 5).
NOTE: THE DRIVER COMPONENT IS SEPARATED INTO SUB-PACKAGES FOR THE TWO
SCANNER MODELS WE CURRENTLY SUPPORT, THE SCANSHELL 800 AND SNAPSHELL
IDR. HIGHLIGHTING THE DRIVERS OPTION IN THE SELECT COMPONENTS WINDOW
WILL OFFER MORE DETAIL. CLICKING THE DETAILS BUTTON WILL OPEN A SEPARATE
WINDOW AND ALLOW YOU TO SELECT ONLY THE DRIVERS FOR THE MODEL OF
SCANNER YOU HAVE (IMAGES 6 AND 7).
Once you have successfully completed the installation process, you are ready to
connect your hardware and configure it for use. Begin by connecting the “D” shaped
end of the provided USB cable to the ScanShell 800 and the other end to an available
USB port on your computer.
NOTE: DO NOT CONNECT THE SCANNER TO A USB KEYBOARD OR OTHER HUB.
After attaching your scanner, you will be greeted with the Found New Hardware
Wizard. When asked whether Windows can connect to Windows Update to search for
your software, select No, not this time and click Next (Image 11).
Image 11
Select to Install the software automatically (Recommended) and then click Next
(Image 12).
During the hardware installation, Windows will prompt you that the software you are
installing has not passed Windows Logo testing. Select to Continue Anyway (Image
13).
Image 13
When the hardware set-up process has completed, you will be notified by Windows
that the wizard has finished installing the software for the CSSN SCANSHELL 800.
Click Finish (Image 14).
Once both the Drivers License Scanner Browser Plug-In and Drivers have been
installed, you may begin using the scanner with KeepnTrack.
Begin by logging into the Administration component of KeepnTrack at your Kiosk
Station. This is necessary to initially calibrate your Scan Shell 800 scanner. Once
calibrated, it will function correctly for operators signed into either an attended or self
service kiosk on the same machine as well.
From the Operators control panel, click on the button to Enable Scanner Maintenance (Image 15).
NOTE: FOR SOME VERSIONS OF INTERNET EXPLORER (IE7), THE FIRST TIME AN
ATTEMPT TO USE THE ADD-ON IS MADE, YOU WILL BE PROMPTED TO ENABLE IT. YOU
MUST SELECT TO RUN THE ACTIVE X CONTROL FOR YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE SCANNER
TO FUNCTION WITH YOUR BROWSER (IMAGES 16 AND 17). IF YOU WISH TO ENABLE
OR DISABLE THIS CONTROL LATER, YOU MAY DO SO FROM THE MANAGE ADD-ONS
CONTROL IN INTERNET EXPLORER.
Once scanner maintenance has been enabled under the Operator control panel in
KeepnTrack administration, select the option to Calibrate ID Scanner (Image 18).
You will be prompted first to insert the calibration card into your scanner. Do so at
this time, noting the alignment directions on the back of the card. Click OK to begin
the calibration process (Image 20).

Once calibration has finished, click OK (Image 21).

NOTE: FROM TIME TO TIME THE SCANSHELL 800 MAY REQUIRE MAINTENANCE OR
CLEANING. AN AUTHORIZED OPERATOR MAY RETURN TO THESE CONTROLS
WHENEVER NECESSARY TO INITIATE THE CALIBRATION OR CLEANING PROCESS.
ALWAYS ENSURE YOU HAVE THE REQUIRED MATERIALS (CALIBRATION AND/OR
CLEANING CARDS) READY BEFORE INITIATING THESE PROCESSES.
Once your device has been calibrated, you must ensure the ID Scanner is enabled for
all operators signing into the kiosk. Under the Operators permissions in the Operator
Control Panel in Administration select the Devices tab and ensure the option titled ID Scanner is Enabled is selected (Image 22)
You may now log into the KeepnTrack kiosk to perform sign-in and even sign-out
processes requiring id.
After selecting Sign In or Sign Out, place an ID in the scanner tray, squarely aligned
to the right, and click the Scan ID button (Image 23).
The ScanShell 800 device will draw the License through the scanner as it images it
and collects the required data. Do not force the license through as it will devoid the
scan and could damage the devise. Shortly after the scan completes, KeepnTrack will
process the data captured from the license and the appropriate fields in the browser
should fill in with the Name and Birthdate automatically. When available, the picture
on the license will also be captured and displayed.
You can review the information on the Sign In page and make any necessary
corrections, then click Continue (Image 24). KeepnTrack will perform checks of the
name and age and either allow the person to sign in or prompt them with an
appropriate dialog (depending on your system settings).
Visitors or other people who do not require further review may then select an activity
and print a badge if required (Image 26). The badge will display the visitor’s full
name, picture ID, activity and the date and time of their visit.
Additional Settings for the Drivers License Scanner
