2.0 Power Requirements
The SW-81VA-2 must be connected to an electrical environment of 220 - 230 Volt / 50 Hz. The power connector is at the left side on the rear panel. Before applying power to the unit make sure that the power source has the correct values.
Caution
Be aware of the risks of an electric shock.
Only qualified personnel should perform installations.
In some countries, the power plug must be adapted to local standards. The wires are identified according to the following coding:
- Brown PHASE (Identified with the letter L, maybe red)
- Blue NEUTRAL (Identified with the letter N, maybe black)
- Yellow/Green GROUND (Identified with the letter E, maybe green)
Caution
For safety and signal integrity, use a grounded external power source and a
grounded power connector. Reliable earthing of rack mounted equipment
should be maintained.
If unit is installed in a 19 Inch rack consideration should be given to an environment compatible with the manufacturer’s maximum rated ambient temperature. Avoid placing high heat-producing equipment directly above or below the SW-81VA-2.
The power connector contains the power switch and the fuse drawer for 5x20 fuses. If the fuse blows, replace it only with the same type and value (T 0,5A/250V).
3.0 Settings
Accessible on the backside of the SW-81VA-2 are 6 DIP-Switches for customizing the unit. The DIP-Switches 1 to 5 allow the setting for the CASCADE function.
The 6th DIP-Switch enables or disables the reception from IR remote control. In ON position IR signal reception is enabled (default factory setting).
Refer to chapter 9.0 for a closer description of these settings.

4.0 Attaching Inputs and Outputs and Power Up
a) Switch all units OFF while attaching the signal cables.
b) Connect the 8 computer video sources to the 15pin HD female connectors.
c) Connect the destination to the 15pin HD female connector.
Note:
For the video connections, use good quality 75 coax cable.
The video outputs can drive a signal up to approx. 20 meter cable length.
For longer cable runs use a signal line driver.
d) Connect the stereo audio sources to the eight stereo RCA sockets L+R 1 - 8.
e) Connect the stereo audio output (unbalanced on RCA connectors and/or
balanced on the 5pin screw terminal) to a pair of active speakers, an amplifier or any other Signal Management unit to process the audio signal.
f) Connect the unit to a power source as described in chapter 2.0 and set the
switch at the rear side to ON. Check that the LED in the pushbutton 1 lights up. After the power-up source #1 is automatically selected. The SW-81VA-2 switches always in the Audiofollows-Video mode.
5.0 Front Panel Control
The switcher SW-81VA-2 can be controlled by the 8 pushbuttons on the front panel.
The lighting up of the LED indicates which source is present on the output.
After the power-up source #1 is automatically selected.

6.0 Control by Dry Contacts and Tally outputs
External remote control is possible by eight (8) dry contacts connected to the female 25pin SubD REMOTE input.
The eight (8) tally signal outputs can be used to drive LEDs, which are contained e.g. in the pushbuttons.
7.0 Autosequencing, Autoswitching and RGB Mute Function
The SW-81VA-2 has three auxiliary functions which can be activated by three (3) dry contacts connected to the female 25pin SubD REMOTE input. The function is enabled when the relative pin is connected to GND (pin 7).
7.1 Autosequencing
The eight sources are routed alternately with a period of 4 or 10 seconds. The period is defined by pin #22 of the 25pin SubD REMOTE connector (see table).
If an input is selected by front panel, IR-Remote or RS-232 during Autosequence, this input is switched to the output and the sequence restarts from this input.

7.2 Autoswitching
The active source is routed. Priority is given to source with the lowest number (1, 2,
3, 4,....) if more than one source is activ.
If an input is selected by front panel, IR-Remote or RS-232 during Autoswitching, this input is switched to the output and the Autoswitching function is interrupted.
7.3 RGB Mute
The output signal is switched off. This function is useful when the image should not yet be visible on the display.
Note:
Autosequencing, Autoswitching and RGB Mute are mutually exclusive.
Order of priority: RGB Mute -> Autoswitching -> Autosequencing.
Note:
If the CASCADE function is enabled the three auxiliary functions
by dry contacts are disabled.
RGB Mute and Autoswitching can be activated by serial control (RS-232).

8.0 RS-232 Control and Commands
All functions of the SW-81VA-2 can be controlled with external controllers like computers or third party controllers (e.g. AMX, RTI). A serial controller is any device that is connected to the standard RS-232 serial port (25pin SubD female) on the rear panel and that can send and receive ASCII character format.
Fixed settings for serial communication with the SW-81VA-2 are:
Tx must be connected to pin # 12 of the 25pin SubD female REMOTE connector. Ground is pin # 25.
In the table the hex commands and their dedicated functions are listed in order to control the SW-81VA-2 by RS-232 (Input 9 to 29 for CASCADE function).

- pushbutton on the front panel is pressed.
In the latter case the input will be routed relative to the pushbutton pressed.
9.0 CASCADE Function and Settings
Up to four SW-81VA-2 can be cascaded in series in order to achieve a 29-In 1-Out Switcher.
Note:
In the CASCADE function the banwidth and other
technical specifications can be affected.
The output of unit#1 must be connected to the input #1 of the second SW-81VA-2 and so on.
You must link all units by daisy chain the RCA LINK connectors at the rear panel with the appropriate number of cables terminated with RCA plugs.
The CASCADE mode is enabled by DIP-Switches accessible on the backside of the unit. Each unit must be indentified in the chain by the appropriate DIP-Switch setting as indicated in the table and the drawing below.

The 6th DIP-Switch enables or disables the reception from IR remote control. In ON position IR signal reception is enabled (default factory setting).
Note:
If the CASCADE function is enabled the three auxiliary functions are disabled,
except RGB Mute and Autoswitching can be activated by serial control (RS-232).
9.1 Control in CASCADE mode
In CASCADE mode a source can be selected by using the buttons on the front panel of each unit or using a external serial controller.
For RS-232 control of the cascaded units all the pins#12 (Tx) of all units must be joined together and connected to the serial controller, the same must be done with all the pins #25 (Gnd). For the serial codes see the table of commands in chapter 8.0.
