Grounding or Polariz ation: This pr oduct may be equip ped with a pol arized

will only t into the power outlet in one directio n. This is a safety feature. If you
are unable to ins ert the plug fully into the ou tlet, try rever sing the direc tion of

Conne cting Headphon es

Connec t headphones/ear phones to the Headphone Out jac k for private listen ing.
Lower the volume level before c onnecting
headphones, then gradually increase the volume for comfor table listening.
Hearing experts advise against the constant use of personal stereos played
at high volume.
Constant high-volume use can lead to hear ing loss. If you experience
ringin g in your ears or hear ing loss, discontinue use immediately and seek medical adv ice.

The MP- C833 operates on 1 x “AA A” batter y for music playback.

Remove the USB Cap.

Conne cting to a Com pute r

If you are us ing Wi ndows 9 8 SE, you must install the USB driver cont ained on the supplied Install ation C D. Please see the U SB Driver Inst allation sec­tion for m ore infor mation .
To connect to a computer:
Make sure the player is turned off.

Remove the USB Cap and plug the MP-C 833 directly into your computer’s

USB port. It may take Windo ws several minutes to r ecogni ze and set
up th e devi ce the r st time it is c onnec ted de pending on your ha rdware cong uration
Your player will be detected as a “Removable Disk” when you open
“My Computer”.
You may choose to use a USB extension cable to connect to a
computer.
Transferri ng Music to Your MP-C833
Connect the MP-C833 to a computer.

Open the computer’s le browser (e.g., “Windows Explorer”).

Select the music les to transfer and drag-and-drop them onto the “Remov-

able Disk” icon that represents your MP-C833.
You may also transfer les from your MP-C833 to a computer.
Do not d isconnect the MP-C833 or otherwise interrupt the le transfer process. Doing so may corrupt your les and/or the player’s rmware.
Please refer to the documentation that came with your computer
or operating system for mo re information and support regarding
music transfer and le management over a USB connection.

USB Driver I nstallation

It is not neces sary to install the USB driver if your computer is running Microsoft Window s ME /200 0/X P or newer, o r Mac intosh OS X . Co mputers running thes e operating systems will recognize your player automaticall y when connected.
If your co mputer is r unning Windows 98 SE:
Inser t t he Installation CD into your co mputer ’s CD or DVD drive. Make

sure to pla ce the mini-CD i n the center, recesse d well of the d rive tray.
Navigat e to MY COM PUTER and double- click on the CD/DVD drive ic on

Double-click on the folder “ Win98 USB Drivers” and then on the folder

Double -cli ck on the SETUP icon (SET UP.EXE) to star t the USB driver

To turn your player off, hold for at least 3 seco nds. The LED indic ator

If your player f reezes or othe rwis e behave s abnor mally, remove the batter y for 3 seconds. Repl ace the battery and restart your p layer.

perf ormanc e of the MP-C83 3 or to add additiona l feature s. Please check the CO BY websi te periodica lly at www.co byusa.c om to s ee if n ew rm ware has bee n released for your playe r. If you are experiencing abnorm al behav ­ior with your player, yo u may choo se to restore (fo rmat) your player before
updatin g its rmware.
Do not interrup t the rmware upgrad e process — doing so could damage your pl ayer and render it inop erable.
See the docum entatio n th at is i ncluded with the  rmware up­grade le for detai led instr uction s.
Connec t your player to the computer.

What i s an MP3?
MP3 (shor t for MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3) is a comp ressed digital audio le. MP3 les can deliver audio at a qual ity that nearly match es c ompact disc s
(CDs), but are ab out one -tenth th e size of CD -audio.
How can I play an MP3?
MP3s m ay be played on a w ide var iety of device s. Devic es that may
play MP3s are: MP3 Players, Portable Media Players (PMPs), Persona l
Comput ers, and DV D Players.
Where Can I Get MP3/WMA les?
You may either download MP3 or WMA l es from a music do wnload o r sub­script ion ser vice, or y ou may create (“rip” ) your own MP3/W MA les .
Downl oadi ng MP3/WMA File s
There are many online stores or subsc riptio n s ervices you may choose t o purchase and downloa d music from. Most of these stores empl oy Windows
Media Digital Right s Manageme nt (WMDR M) and offer enc rypted WMA les for downl oad. Due to the enc ryption, these les cannot be played on all MP3
Players.
Most COBY MP3 Players can play encrypted WMA les— these play­ers wi ll state that they are WMD RM10- compat ible on their packaging. If you are un sure of whet her or not your player can play encrypted WMA les, see the specicati ons section of the manual or visit our website at www.c obyusa.c om for more inform ation ab out your player.

What i s Encr ypti on?
Encry ption is a way of protecting media with a u nique Content ID for the purpose of data secur ity. In order to acc ess the encr ypted me dia, End Users must acquire a license key and that allows for decryption and playback. Withou t this lic ense key, encr ypted me dia will not play

You can create yo ur own digital audio les for per sonal use by “ ripping” your
music CD s and conver ting t hem to an MP 3 or WMA .
To create your ow n MP3 les, you w ill nee d a c omputer with an app licati on
installed that can rip and encode MP3s or W MAs. Windows Media Player 10 is one softwa re app licati on made avail able by Mic rosof t that will rip and
conver t CDs to an M P3 or WMA le.
Rippin g a CD copies and c onver ts (encod es) the musi c from the CD to a
compressed digital audio le.
Conver ting to MP3 and/or d eselec ting the “Co py P rotect Music” option
will ensu re the widest playba ck compatibility of your mu sic les.

Music p urchase d from A pple’s iTunes music store empl oys their propr ietar y Fairplay -encr ypted AAC format. Purc hased iTunes mus ic can not be played on any MP3 p layer other than Apple’s.
However, MP3 les may b e transferred from iTunes to your MP3 player.

The sound qualit y of the mus ic is poor.
Try playin g the  le on yo ur comp uter. If th e sound qualit y is sti ll poor, try
downloading the  le again or re-encoding t he le your self.
Ensure that the bit rate of the le is not to o lo w. The higher th e bit rat e
of the le, t he bet ter it will sound. The minim um rec ommended bitrate is
128kbps fo r MP3s an d 96kbp s for WMA s.
Try lowering the volum e of the playe r.
Ensure that the headphones ar e attached secur ely to the player.

Ensure that the le is i n a compat ible for mat.
