Grounding or Polariz ation: This pr oduct may be equip ped with a pol arized

alternating- current line plug that has one blade wider than the other. This plug
will only t into the power outlet in one direc tion. This is a safety feature. If you
are unable to ins ert the plug fully into the ou tlet, try rever sing the direc tion of
the plug. If the plug shoul d still fail t o t, contac t an electr ician to repl ace the
obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safet y purpose of the polarized plug.

Conne cting an Ex ter nal Microphone (Option al)

The CX-R189 is equipped with both an integra ted microphone and a micro ­phone inp ut jack that can be use d to conne ct an external mic rophone.
The MIC In jack will a ccept mi cropho nes with a 3 .5mm co nnector plug.
If an exter nal microphone i s connec ted to the M IC In jack, the integr ated
microp hone will b e disabled.

GETTING STARTED

Conne cting Headphon es (Optional)

The CX-R189 is equipped with both an integra ted speake r and a head ­phone output jack t hat can be used to connect head phones or an extern al speaker sy stem.
The Head phone Out jack will a ccept he adphone s or speakers with a
3.5mm c onnect or plug.
If headph ones or sp eakers are connec ted to the He adphone O ut jack,
the integ rated spe aker will be d isabled.

Slee p/Standby/Time Mode

The recorder wil l enter sleep mode automatic ally if it is i dle to save po wer
(the displ ay will be bl ank). To activate the recor der from s leep mode:
Press once to enter Time mo de; press a gain to ente r Standby
mode. The record er will display the cur rent fol der and number of recordings.
Press to enter Time mode. Th e recorder will dis play the cu rrent
time and date.
The recorder will switch to Time mode if it is idle for 30 seconds.
The reco rder wil l enter Sle ep mode if it is idle for 6 0 second s.
If t he r ecorder fai ls to wake from sleep mod e, ma ke su re t hat the batteries have been properly loaded and that they retain a charge.

Hold Sw itch

The Hold feature lo cks (disabl es) your reco rder’s c ontrols t o prevent ac ­cident al key press es when it is in your poc ket or bag.
To lock t he co ntrols, set the H OLD switch to LOC K (righ t) posi tion .
To unloc k the c ontr ols, s et the HOLD swit ch to t he OFF (lef t) position.

OPERATION

Sett ing t he Dat e and Time

After the batter ies have been loaded properly, the recorder will be in Standby mode. The display will read “1M01D” (month, day) and “0:00” (hour, min). Press to enter Standby mode and set the date and time as follows:
Press and hold for 3 secon ds. The display will re ad “SET ”

Press . The “Year ” indicator will ash.

Press or to adjust the yea r and then pr ess to set.

The “M onth” indi cator will ash.
Press or to adjust the mo nth and the n press to set.

Press or to adjust the dat e and then pr ess to set.
6.
The “Hour” ind icator w ill ash.
Press or to adjust the hour and then press to set.

The “Minutes” in dicator w ill ash.

OPERATION
To set the Recor ding mode quality:
1.
Press and hold for 3 secon ds. The display will re ad “SET ”

Press or to adjust the Rec ording Q ualit y (HP, MP, S P, or LP) and then p ress to set. The re corder w ill retur n to Stand by mode.

Sett ing t he Record Sens itivit y

Set the MI C SENS swi tch on the rear of the recorder to the LOW posi -
tion to re cord sou nds that ar e very cl ose to the mi cropho ne.
Set the MI C SENS swi tch on the rear of the recorder to the HIGH p osi-
tion to re cord sou nds that ar e further away from the microphone.

Sett ing Voi ce Activated System Re cordi ng (VOX)

Set the VAS swi tch to the O FF position to record from t he microphone
contin uously wh en recording.
Set the VAS swi tch to the O N positi on to reco rd from th e microp hone
only when sound is det ected.
The beginning of the recording may be clippe d slightly when VAS is active.
The recorder will pause automatical ly after 2 se conds of si­lence. A chang e in speaking volume will not cause the recor der to pause. Pr ess to pause reco rding manually.
A distanc e of approxi mately 8 inches should be maintain ed be­tween the speaker and the integr ated microphone at normal speaki ng levels.
The integrated audio leve l d etector will s et the recor ding vol­ume autom atically.

Making Reco rdin gs

While in S tandby mo de, press (File/Time) to se lect a fol der

“PAUSE”. Pres s again to resume r ecordi ng.
If the Voice Activated System (VOX) is o n, the recorder will
pause rec ording a utomati cally wh en no sound i s detecte d.
Press to stop and s ave the rec ording.

Do no t rem ove the batt erie s while recording or other wise inter rupt the re cordi ng pr ocess . Doi ng so may result in l ost
or d amaged recording les . Th e re corder will take a few m in­utes to resume no rmal oper ations (the di splay will rea d “LOAD” until normal func tion res umes).
In or der to protec t your voice recordings, it is good practice to regula rly save backu p c opies or your recordings (see the PC Connec tion & Soft ware section of this manual for more infor­mation).

Managing You r Recordings

The recorder has four folder s (A, B, C, D) in which recordings may be stored.
A total of 3 96 reco rdings may be stored o n the reco rder.
A total of 9 9 recordings may be stored in ea ch folder.

Press (File/ Time) to sel ect a folder

Press again to re sume playback.
Press to play the next reco rding.
Press and hol d to scan quickly throug h t he current re-
cordin g in a forward direc tion.
Press to play the previous re cordin g.
Press and hol d to scan quickly throug h t he current re-
cordin g in reverse.
Press to change the Repeat Playback opti ons ( Repeat,
Repeat A ll).
Press or to adjust the vol ume level.

You can set the re corder to play back t he rst 5 se conds of e ach reco rding.
Press (File/ Time) to sel ect a folder (A, B, C, D).

Eras ing Your Record ings

If the rec order is i n Time mod e, press to enter St andby mod e.
Press (File/ Time) to sel ect a folder (A, B, C, D). The Recording

Press or to select a rec ording to erase. The Time indicator

USB Driver I nstallation (Win dows 98 SE Only)

It is not nec essar y to inst all the US B driver if y our computer is run ning Microsoft Windows ME /200 0/X P or newer. Computers running the se oper­ating systems will recognize your player automati cally wh en conne cted.
If your co mputer is r unning Windows 98 SE, a USB dr iver must be install ed. If a USB driver has not b een installed on you r comput er, connecting the recorder will initiate the installation pro cess.
Follow th e on-sc reen dire ctions t o comple te the inst allatio n process.
Mini- CDs should o nly be used in normal tray- loadin g CD/ DVD drives . Mini- CDs may be used in slot-loadi ng drives with the proper adapter; please contact your computer o r dr ive manu­facturer for more i nformation.

Inst all ing the Voice Ma nage r Software

Inser t the CD in your computer’s CD/DVD optic al drive.

Double -cli ck on the dr ive’s icon (e.g., “ D:”) and run the setup p rogram.

Install the program in the sp ecied folder.

Do not alter the installati on folder to prevent the driver from
malfun ctioning.
Click the “ Next ” button to co ntinue. Th e installa tion proc ess will
begin. When the pro cess is  nished, c lick the “ Finish” button.

Trans fer ring Record ings t o Your PC

Use the sup plied US B cable to c onnect the reco rder to your compute r.

The recorder display will re ad “USB”.
On your PC, a n ew “Remov able Disk ” icon wi ll appear. You can
acces s this icon from the “My Com puter ” functi on.
Double -cli ck the Rem ovable Dis k icon to vi ew the les on your rec order.
2.
Four folder s (A , B, C, D) wil l be available f or browsing. These
folder s are t he fold ers to which les have been recorded.
It is possible to c opy le s to the voic e reco rder as well as from
the rec order using your op erating system fun ctions (e.g., “Drag and Dr op” or “Cut a nd Paste ”). Ple ase refer to t he doc umenta ­tion that came with your co mputer or operating sys tem for more details .
To disconnec t the rec order safely from y our comp uter, double -cli ck the

green ar row in the t askbar lo cated on t he lower-r ight sid e of the com ­puter screen (Safely Remove Hardware). Follow the on- screen p rompts to stop the U SB Hardware devic e, and then d isconn ect the US B cable and voice record er from th e PC.

Playing Recordings

The CX-R189 us es special LP/MP/S P/HP for mats to record. The se formats can only b e played with the Voice M anager program.
Browse t he voice recorde r les in the left panel. (Click the “Brow se”
button t o navigate t he folders as you would on a comp uter).
Select a  le to play (l es are named “ICR XX XX .LP” ).
Click th e red “Play ” button located at the lowe r-left c orner of the windo w.

Conver ting Recording s to WAV

You can conver t the rec ording s to the widely suppo rted WAV for mat. The WAV format can be played by almost any me dia player, MP 3 player, or comput er progr am.

Select t he WAV algorithm in the c enter bet ween the l eft and r ight
panels.
Click th e “Conver t” but ton to start the c onversi on process.
HP and MP re cordin gs are recorded at a 16Kbps sample rate. SP and LP rec ording s a re recor ded at a 8Kbp s sample rate.
If record ings need to be conver ted back to play on the recorder, please make sure that the correct voice recording quality is chosen. If you are unsure o f the c orrect re cordin g qu ality, try both.
