As the las er beam used in this c ompact disc playe r is harmful to the eye s, do not attempt
to disassemble the casing .
Stop ope ration immediately if any li quid or solid obje ct should fall int o the cabinet.
Do not put anyt hing in the s afety slot. If you do, the laser diode w ill be ON when the C D
door is st ill open.
If the uni t is not to be us ed for a long per iod of t ime, make s ure that all power sources
are disc onnected fro m the unit. Remove all batteries from the ba ttery compartment, and unplug t he AC-DC ad apter from the wall outlet. M ake it a practi ce to remove th e AC-DC adapter by g rasping the main b ody and not by pulling the cord .
This unit employs a laser. The use of control s or adjustment or perfor mance of proce-
dures oth er than those spe cied here may re sult in exposure to hazardo us radiation.
ON PLACE MENT
Do not use t he unit in places wh ich are extreme ly hot, cold, dust y, or humid.
Place th e unit on a at and even sur face.
Do not rest rict th e air ow of the u nit by placing it in a plac e with poor ventilation, by

ON COND ENSATION
When l eft in a he ated room w here it is w arm and damp, water droplets or condensatio n

When the re is condensat ion inside the uni t, the unit may not fun ction normally.
Let the unit stand 1 to 2 hour s bef ore turning the power on, or grad ually heat the room up
and dry t he unit before use.
Should any trouble occur, remove the power source and refer servicing to qualied personnel.

CD CARE & MAINTENANCE

Hand ling CDs

Hold a CD by its edges. Avoid touching the recorded side of the disc. To remove a CD from its storage case, press down on the center retention mechani sm of the case and lif t the disc out.

Cleaning CDs

Use a dry, soft cloth to wipe off any ngerprint s and dusts from the play­ing surface of the disc. W ipe in a straight line radially from the center to the outside edge of the disc. Small dust par ticl es and light stains will not affect playback qualit y.
Never use chemicals such as record sprays, anti-static sprays, ben-
zene, or thinners to cl ean your CDs.
To reduce the risk of s cratches, al ways put CDs back in their case after use.
Do not subjec t CDs to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, high
humidit y, or high temperatures.
Do not plac e sticker s or labels on either side of the CD.

Cleaning t he CD Player Lens

A dirt y lens can c ause CD playback to skip. If the lens is very dir ty, the CD may not work at all. Unplug the power supply, open the CD door, and clean the lens as fo llows:
For Dust or Dr y Par ticles - use a camer a lens brush/ blower to blow
on the lens a few times. Then, wipe the lens gently with the brush, and blow on t he lens onc e more.
For Fingerprints - use a dry cotton swab to wipe the lens in a straight
line radially from the center to the outside edge.

To mount your CX-CD397 to either a wall or the pedestal base:
Using 4 screws, afx the mounting plate to either a wall or to the
1. pedestal base.

Align the 4 mounting slots on the bottom of the main unit to hang on the hooks of the mounting plate.

Conne ctions

Speakers

Always connect the speakers before connecting the power supply.
Connec t the black wire of the left speaker to the black terminal marked “ L-” on the rear of th e main unit.
Connec t the red wire of the lef t speaker to the red terminal mar ked “L+” on the rear of the main unit.
Connec t the black wire of the right speaker to the black terminal marked “ R-” on the rear of the main unit.
Connec t the red wire of the right speaker to the red terminal marked
“R+” on the rear of the main unit.

Power

This unit r uns on AC 110V or 220V powe r.
Make sure that the voltage selector on the bottom of the unit is
1. set to the proper voltage. If you are unsure whic h voltage setting
to use, please contact the loc al retailer from which you purchased this product.

Plug the power cord into an AC wall socket.
To turn the player on, set the POW ER switch to the “On” position.
3.
The voltage selection for North America is 110V.

Failure to do so may result in damage to your hearing or to the headphones.
Connec t your headphones to the Headpho ne jack. Audio will not
2. be output to the speakers when headphones are connected to the unit.

Remot e Cont rol

Refer to the diagram. Remove the
batter y compartment cover located on the rear of the remote control. Inser t 2 x “AA” batteries, making sure to match their polarities (+/–) to the markings on the inside of the compar tment . Replace the cover.
To use the remote, point it at the re-
mote sensor of t he player. Operate the remote within 15 feet of the sensor and at an angle of +/- 60 degrees.
Batter ies in the remote will last for approximately 6 months under
normal use. Replace the batteries if t he remote control does not work. Do not mix old with new batteries, or dif ferent types of bat­teries.
Remove the batterie s from the remote if it will not be used for a long period of time.
The battery used in this device may present a re or
chemical burn if mistreated. Do not recharge, disass em­ble, incinerate, or heat the battery (~212º F).
Keep batteries away fro m children.

CD MODE

CD Mode allows you to play regular audio CDs, or CDs that c ontain
digital MP3 or WM A music les.
If the CD contains M P3 or WM A les, playback control
will be the same as in UDISK mode. See the UDISK Mode sec tion for more infor mation.
DRM-encr ypted WMA les are not supported.

Basi c Operatio n

Press FUNCTION to select CD mode.

Press to st art CD playback.

Press to st art playback.
Press during playback to pause. Pres s again to resume
playback.
Press dur ing playback to stop the disc.

Previous/Nex t (Skip)

Press to sk ip to the previous track.
Press to sk ip to the nex t track.

Reverse/For ward (Scan)

Press and hold to scan through the current track in a reverse
direction.
Press and hold to scan through the c urrent track in a forward
direction.

UDISK MODE

UDISK mode allows you to play digital MP3 and WMA music les from USB ash drives.
Use only USB- MSC devices or ash disk drives . US B-
MTP devic es are not suppor ted.
DRM-encr ypted WMA les are not supported.

Basi c Operatio n

Press FUNCTION to select UDISK mode.
Connec t a USB disk drive containing MP3/W MA les to the USB
port on the front of the unit. Pl ayback will start automatically.
Press to pause playback or pres s to stop playback com-
pletely. Pres s again to resume playback.
Press or to select the previous or next track, respectively.
If the USB drive cont ains folders, press BAND/FOLDER to cycle
through the folders.
Playback w ill stop automatically when all tracks on the USB drive
have been played.
If the ID3 Display feature has been turned on in the Menu Options (and
the MP3 le being played contains ID3 information), then the le name,
song title, and artist name w ill be displayed on the LCD.

SD/MMC MODE

SD/MMC mode allows you to play digital M P3 and WM A music les from SD or MMC ash c ards.
DRM-encr ypted WMA les are not supported.

Basi c Operatio n

Press FUNCTION to select UDISK mode.
Inser t a SD or MMC card containing MP3/WM A les into the SD/
MMC c ard slot on the front of the unit. Playback will start automati­cally.
Press to pause playback or press to stop playback com-
pletely. Pres s again to resume playback.
Press or to select the next or previous track, respectively.
If the SD/MMC card contains folders, press BAND/FOLDER to cycle
through the folders.
Playback will stop automatically when all tracks on the SD/MMC
card have been played.
If the ID3 Display feature has been turned on in the Menu Options (and
the MP3 le being played contains ID3 information), then the le name,
song title, and artist name w ill be displayed on the LCD.

RADIO MODE

Listen to A M or FM radio broadcasts.

Basi c Operatio n

Press FUNCTION to select R ADIO mode.
Press BA ND/FOLDER to select the AM or FM band.
AM: Listen to AM broadcasts.
FM: Listen to FM broadc asts.
Turn the AM/FM Tuning Dial to select a broadcast st ation.
When the tuner is locked in to a stereo broadc ast, the LCD screen will display “STEREO” Tuning.
For the best FM radio reception, position t he FM Radio Antenna located on the rear of the unit away from the speaker and power cables.
The AM antenna is built directly into the unit. If AM recept ion is weak, you may need to rotate or move the unit to obtain a bet ter signal.

MENU MODE

Set the unit’s internal options. Press MENU on the rem ote control to cycle thr ough the Menu options: Clock, Timer, EQ, Bass, and ID3.
All of the in struc ti ons in this s ectio n r efe r t o the keys
on the remot e c ont ro l.

Menu Mode Options

Clock

Set the internal clo ck time.
Press MENU until the LCD screen displays “CLOCK” and then

Press to change bet ween the “hours” and the “minutes” eld

(the selec ted eld w ill blink).
Press or to adjust the hours/minutes down or up,
3. respec tively.
When you have nished, press MEN U to return to the Menu mode.

Timer

Set the Tim er to have the unit turn on/off automatically at a set time. To toggle the Timer feature on/off, press TIM ER on the rem ote (the LCD will display “TIMER” when the Timer is on).
Make sure the internal clock has been properly set be­fore using the Timer feature.
Make sure the unit has been turned off before settin g the Timer.

Additional Opt ions (Remote Control)

These options can be set directly from the remote co ntrol. They are not part of the Menu options.

Slee p

This setting will turn the unit off automatically after a set amount of time.
1.
Press SLEEP repeatedly to set the amount of time before t he unit turns of f. The minimum length i s 10 minutes; the maximum is 90 minutes.
2.
Press SLEEP again to di splay the remaining amount of time for 2 seconds.
3.
Press SLEEP again to change the amount of “Sleep” time.
4.
To cancel the Sleep func tion, press SLEEP until the LCD no longer displays “S LEEP”.

Repea t and Random Pl ay

This setting chan ges the order in which the unit will play tracks.
Press REPE AT to cycle through the Repeat Play options: Repeat, Repeat Folder, and Repeat A ll.
Repeat: Repeat the current track
Repeat Folder: Repeat all tracks in the cur rent folder
Repeat All: Repeat all t racks
Press RA NDOM to toggle Random Play on or off. When this is set to “On”, the unit w ill play tracks in a random order.
Random Play will not wor k when the unit is in Program
Play mode.

Program Play

Program a sequence of up to 20 tracks to be played.
1.
Press to make sure playback is stopped.
2.
Press to enter Progr am Mode. The LCD screen will display [MEMORY ], [00], and [P 01].
While [0 0] is blinking, press or to select a track number,
3. and then press to store it in memory. The LCD screen now displays [P 02]. (In UDISK or S D/MMC modes, you can
press BA ND/FOLDER rst to select a folder rst.)
4.
Repeat the previous step until you have selected up to 20 tracks. Press to st art Program Play.
Pressing or during Program Play will display
the programmed track number. Press to clear the program list. The program list will also be lost if you open the CD Door or if the unit is unplugged.

There is no power to the devic e.
Ensure that the power cord is securely connected to the unit and the
proper wall outlet.
Ensure that the voltage selector has been set properly (110V or 220V).
There is no sound.
Ensure that the speaker connections are secure and c orrec t.
Try adjusting the volume.
Ensure that the player is in the proper mode (CD, UDISK, SD/MM C,
Radio).
Ensure that headphones are not connecte d to the unit.
The sound is distor ted.
The unit may be positioned too closely to a large appliance (e.g, a
TV or refrigerator). If possible, turn the appliance off or move the unit to another location.
Ensure that the radio is in broadc ast reception range.

The remote control doesn’t work.
Ensure that there are no obstacles between the remote and the player.
Point the remote at the remote sensor on the main unit.
Strong light (e.g. direct sunlight, uoresc ent lights, strobe lights) may
interfere with the remote si gnal.
Ensure that the batteries in t he remote retain a char ge and have
been inst alled correct ly.
Try replacing the remote’s batteries.
The device does not play.
Moisture may have c ondensed inside the player. Remove the disc and leave the player on for 1-2 hours and then try again.
The USB disk or SD/MMC card does not play.
Use only US B-MSC devices or ash di sk drives. USB- MTP devices
are not supp orted.
Ensure that the USB disk or SD/ MMC card has been loaded with
compatible MP3 o r WMA le s.
Ensure that the capacity of the SD/M MC card does not exceed 2GB. High- capacity SD cards (HCSD) are not supported by t his player.
DRM-encr ypted WMA les ar e not supported.
The CD will not play.
Ensure that the CD has be en loaded with its label facing up.
Ensure that the CD is not damaged, sc ratched, or dirt y.
