WHAT THIS SHEET IS ABOUT

The information contained in this sheet is essential reading for users of Clarke
trestles.

Its function is to give you important instructions for safe 'working at height',
where there is a risk of a fall that could cause personal injury.

NOTE: Working at height is work in any place, including a place at,

above or below ground level, where a person could be injured if
they fell from that place. Access and egress to a place of work
can also be work at height. Examples include working on trestles.

REQUIREMENTS FOR USING TRESTLES

Any work at height needs to be planned in advance of the work activity.

1. In considering if a trestle is suitable for the job, you must make sure that the
trestle is:

• NOT OVERLOADED DO NOT EXCEED THE MAXIMUM LOAD STATED ON

THE TRESTLE.

• ONLY USED ON A FLAT, LEVEL STABLE GROUND.

• of a sufficient width for the work being done.

• free from trip hazards or gaps through which persons or materials

could fall;

• kept clean and tidy, e.g. do not let mortar or unwanted material

build up on platforms;

• not loaded in a way that could increase the risk of collapse or cause

deformation that could prevent safe use. This is particularly relevant
for trestles loaded with blockwork;

2. Do not use the trestle where the user can fall more than 4.570m from the
working platform

3. Trestles should only be used for light work of short duration – a stronger
assembly is to be used if longer periods are anticipated.

4. Working platforms must be adequate for the weight being applied and
can be either a minimum of two 230 mm scaffold boards or an appropriate
staging.

5. Maximum span must not exceed: 1.370m with 38 mm thick boards or

2.440m with 50 mm thick boards.

TRAINING

You should be aware of the safe systems of work when working at height and
understand the principles of fall prevention.

TRESTLE CHECKLIST

Users must do the following checks each time the trestles are used, if there is
any doubt, do not use the trestles.

• Are the trestles and any boards used, free of defects?

• Are the trestles and any boards used, of sufficient strength?

• Are the trestles set on a firm and level base?

• Are the height locking pins secure?

• Is the maximum load shown and being complied with?

• Is safe ladder access provided?

• Are there risks that can be foreseen and are they being addressed,

for example tieing the trestle to an adjacent structure?

• Are the environmental conditions suitable for working at height?

(Wind, Rain, Cold, Ice, Slippery, Heat, Glare, etc)

• Is personal protective equipment (PPE) such as a hard hat, suitable

boots, available and being used.?

• Are barriers/warning signs necessary to prevent unauthorised access

to the area?

• Do not stand on the overhanging part of the boards.
