GENERAL INFORMATION
VEHICLE COVERAGE
The OBDII Code Reader is specially designed to work with all OBDII compliant vehicles, including those equipped with the next-generation protocol -- Control Area Network (CAN). All 2000 and later vehicles are OBDII compliant and this includes all USA, Asian and European vehicles. A small number of 1994 and 1995 model year petrol vehicles are OBDII compliant. To verify if a 1994 or 1995 vehicle is OBDII compliant, check the Vehicle Emissions Control Information (VECI) Label which is located under the bonnet or by the radiator of most vehicles. If the vehicle is OBDII compliant, the label will designate “OBDII Certified”. Additionally, regulations mandate that all OBDII compliant vehicles must have a “common” sixteen-pin Data Link Connector (DLC). For your vehicle to be OBDII, EOBD or JOBD compliant it must have a 16-pin DLC (Data Link Connector) under the dash and the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label must state that the vehicle is OBDII compliant.

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC)
OBDII Diagnostic Trouble Codes are stored by the on-board computer diagnostic system in response to a problem found in the vehicle. These codes identify a particular problem area and are intended to provide you with a guide as to where a fault might be occurring within a vehicle. OBDII Diagnostic Trouble Codes consist of a five-digit alphanumeric code. The first character, a letter, identifies which control system sets the code. The other four characters, all numbers, provide additional information on where the DTC originated and the operating conditions that caused it to set. Here is an example to illustrate the structure of the digits:

Page 7
NOTE: Manufacturer Specific Codes(x1xxx): This is where the vehicle
manufacturer feels that a code is not available within the generic list. The definitions for these are set by the vehicle manufacturer.
OBDII READINESS MONITORS
An important part of a vehicle's OBDII system are the Readiness monitors, which are indicators used to find out if all of the emissions components have been evaluated by the OBDII system. They run periodic tests on specific systems and components to ensure that they are performing within allowable limits. Currently, there are eleven OBDII Readiness Monitors (or I/M Monitors) defined. Not all monitors are supported by all vehicles and the exact number of monitors in any vehicle depends on the motor vehicle manufacturer's emissions control strategy.
CONTINUOUS MONITORS
Some of the vehicle components or systems are continuously tested by the vehicle's OBDII system, while others are tested only under specific vehicle operating conditions. The continuously monitored components listed below are always ready:
1. Misfire
2. Fuel System
3. Comprehensive Components Monitors (CCM)
7
Parts & Service: 020 8988 7400 / E-mail: [email protected] or [email protected]
Page 8
Once the vehicle is running, the OBDII system is continuously checking the above components, monitoring key engine sensors, watching for engine misfire, and monitoring fuel demands.
NON CONTINUOUS MONITORS
Unlike the continuous monitors, many emissions and engine system components require the vehicle to be operated under specific conditions before the monitor is ready. These monitors are termed non-continuous monitors and are listed below:
1. EGR System
2. O2 Sensors
3. Catalyst
4. Evaporative System
5. O2 Sensor Heater
6. Secondary Air
7. Heated Catalyst
8. A/C System
OBDII MONITOR READINESS STATUS
OBDII systems must indicate whether or not the vehicle's PCM monitor system has completed testing on each component. Components that have been tested will be reported as Ready or Complete, meaning they have been tested by the OBDII system. The purpose of recording readiness status is to allow inspectors to determine if the vehicle's OBDII system has tested all the components and/or systems. The powertrain control module (PCM) sets a monitor to Ready or Complete after an appropriate drive cycle has been performed. The drive cycle that enables a monitor and sets readiness codes to ready varies for each individual monitor. Once a monitor is set as Ready or Complete, it will remain in this state. A number of factors, including erasing of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) with a scan tool or a disconnected battery, can result in Readiness Monitors being set to Not Ready. Since the three continuous monitors are constantly evaluating, they will be reported as Ready all of the time. If testing of a particular supported non-continuous monitor has not been completed, the monitor status will be reported as Not Complete or Not Ready.” In order for the OBD monitor system to become ready, the vehicle should be driven under a variety of normal operating conditions. These operating conditions may include a mix of highway driving and stop and go, city type driving, and at least one overnight-off period. For specific information on getting your vehicle's OBD monitor system ready, please consult your vehicle owner’s manual.

OBDII DEFINITIONS
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
OBDII terminology for the on-board computer that controls engine and drive train.
MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT (MIL)
Malfunction Indicator Light (Service Engine Soon, Check Engine) is a term used for the light on the instrument panel. It is to alert the driver and/or the repair technician that there is a problem with one or more of vehicle's systems and may cause emissions to exceed standards. If the MIL illuminates with a steady light, it indicates that a problem has been detected and the vehicle should be serviced as soon as possible. Under certain conditions, the dashboard light will blink or flash. This indicates a severe problem and flashing is intended to discourage vehicle operation. The vehicle on-board diagnostic system can not turn the MIL off until the necessary repairs are completed or the condition no longer exists.
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC)
Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) that identify which section of the emission control system has malfunctioned.
ENABLING CRITERIA
Also termed Enabling Conditions. They are the vehicle specific events or conditions that must occur within the engine before the various monitors will set or run. Some monitors require the vehicle to follow a prescribed drive cycle routine as part of the enabling criteria. Drive cycles vary among vehicles and for each monitor in any particular vehicle.
OBDII DRIVE CYCLE
A specific mode of vehicle operation that provides condition required to set all the readiness monitors applicable to the vehicle to the ready condition. The purpose of completing an OBDII drive cycle is to force the vehicle to run its on-board diagnostics. Some form of a drive cycle needs to be performed after DTCs have been erased from the PCM's memory or after the battery has been disconnected. Running through a vehicle's complete drive cycle will set the readiness monitors so that future faults can be detected. Drive cycles vary depending on the vehicle and the monitor that needs to be reset. For vehicle specific drive cycle, consult the vehicle's Owner's Manual.
FREEZE FRAME DATA
When an emission related fault occurs, the OBDII system not only sets a code but also records a snapshot of the vehicle operating parameters to help in

Page 10
identifying the problem. This set of values is referred to as Freeze Frame Data and may include important engine parameters such as RPM, vehicle speed, air flow, engine load, fuel pressure, fuel trim value, engine coolant temperature, ignition timing advance or closed loop status.
OBDII MODES OF OPERATION
MODE BYTE
The first byte in the system is the mode number. There are 9 modes for diagnostic requests, so this first byte is from 1 to 9. The first byte in the response data bytes is the same number plus 64. For example, a mode 1 request would have the first data byte = 1, and the response would have the first data byte =
65. Here is a brief description of the modes:
1. Mode $01 - Identifies the Powertrain information and shows current data available to the scan tool. This data includes: DTCs set, status of onboard tests and vehicle data such as engine RPM, temperatures, ignition advance, speed, air flow rates and closed loop status for fuel systems.
2. Mode $02 - Displays Freeze Frame Data. Dame data as in Mode 1, but it captured and stored when a malfunction occurred and a DTC was set. Some of the PIDs for mode 1 are not implemented in this mode.
3. Mode $03 - Displays the type of Powertrain or emission related DTCs stored by a 5 digit code identifying the faults. There may be more than one response message if there are more trouble codes than will fit in the data bytes of the response message, or if there are more than one ECU computer responding.
4. Mode $04 - Used to clear DTCs and Freeze Frame Data. This clears all diagnostic trouble codes that may be set including Freeze Frame Data and Readiness Monitors.
5. Mode $05 - Oxygen Sensor Test Results. This mode displays the oxygen sensor monitor screen and the test results gathered about the oxygen sensor. There are ten numbers available for diagnostics:
• $01 - Rich-to-Lean O2 sensor threshold voltage
• $02 - Lean-to-Rich O2 sensor threshold voltage
• $03 - Low sensor voltage threshold for switch time measurement
• $04 - High sensor voltage threshold for switch time measurement
• $05 - Rich-to-Lean switch time in ms
• $06 - Lean-to-Rich switch time in ms
• $07 - Minimum voltage for test
• $08 - Maximum voltage for test
• $09 - Time between voltage transitions in ms

Page 11
6. Mode $06 - Non-Continuously Monitored Systems test results. there are typically a minimum value, a maximum value and a current value for each non-continuous monitor. This data is optional, and it is defined by a given vehicle make if its used.
7. Mode $07 - Request for DTCs (pending) from Continuously Monitored Systems after a single driving cycle has been performed to determine if repair has fixed a problem. This is used by service engineer to verify repair was performed properly and after clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
8. Mode $08 - This Special Control Mode request control of the onboard system, test, or component bi-directionally (where applicable). This mode is manufacturer specific.
9. Mode $09 - Reports Vehicle Information. This information includes vehicle VIN number and calibration information stored in the vehicle ECUs.
10. Mode $10 - Request Emission Related Diagnostic Trouble Codes with Permanent Status. This mode is required for all emissions related DTCs. The presence of permanent DTCs at an inspection without the MIL illuminated is an indiction that a proper repair was not verified by the onboard monitoring system.

READ CODES
Reading Codes can be done with the ignition on, engine off or ignition on, engine running.
Stored codes are also known as ‘hard codes’ or ‘permanent codes’. These codes cause the control module to illuminate the malfunction indicator light (MIL) when an emission related fault occurs.
Pending codes are also referred to as ‘mature codes’ or ‘continuous monitor codes’. They indicate problems that the control module has detected during the current or last driving cycle but are not considered serious yet. Pending codes will not turn on the malfunction indicator light (MIL). If the fault does not occur within a certain number of warm up cycles, the code clears from the memory.
1. Select Read Codes and press ENTER in the Diagnostic Menu. If there are some codes, the screen will display the codes as shown:

I/M READINESS
I/M refers to Inspection and Maintenance that is legislated by the government to meet clean air standards. I/M Readiness indicates if or not the various emissions related systems on the vehicle operating properly and ready for I/M testing.
The purpose of the I/M Readiness Monitor Status is to indicate which of the vehicle status described on page 8, and which ones have not yet run and completed testing and diagnosis of their designated sections of the vehicle system.
The I/M Readiness Monitor Status function can also be used (after repair of a fault has been performed) to confirm that the repair has been performed correctly, and/or to check for Monitor Run Status.
1. Select I/M readiness and press ENTER, the screen will display as shown:
NOTE: You can use the UP/DOWN Scroll
button to select and press ENTER.
NOTE: N/A means not available on this
vehicle. INC means incomplete or not ready. OK means completed or monitor OK.
There are two modes to show I/M Readiness Monitor Status. You can configure work modes in the Setup menu.
1. Scan Tool Mode: This mode is the default work mode. In this mode, after the vehicles monitors have run and completed their diagnosis and testing, the scan tool will turn to OBDII diagnostic procedures.
NOTE: Only in this mode can you perform the OBDII diagnostics.
2. Ready Test Mode: In this mode, after the vehicles monitors have run and completed their diagnosis and testing, the scan tool will return to the previous screen. So it is only used to check the emission related monitors status.
READY TEST MODE
Repairs to the emissions control system of a 1996 or newer vehicle may cause the vehicles computer (ECU) memory to be cleared. The vehicle must go through a drive cycle to allow the ECU to perform a series of tests to ensure that the repair was successful, and before a mandated emissions test can be conducted.

Page 20
Modern vehicles lack the equipment to indicate whether the tests have been completed. With the auto code reader, you don’t have to bring the vehicle back to the repair shop for retest if all required tests by the ECU are completed.
In the Ready Test Mode, you can easily check the I/M Readiness status to determine whether an OBDII vehicle is ready for an emissions test.
To enter this mode, simply press the One Click Key at anytime. If the One Click function key is set to I/M Readiness. Or, while the scan tool is in Ready Test Mode, select Diagnostics in the main menu screen. If the scan tool is idle, it will show the result immediately. If it is busy, it will wait till the current procedure has finished. After viewing the status, press the I/M Readiness One Click key or ENTER button to exit, which takes a few seconds.
You will then get the information screen as shown:
• OK - Indicates that a particular monitor being checked has completed its diagnostic testing.
• INC - Indicates that a particular monitor being checked has not completed its diagnostic testing.
•N/A - The monitor is not supported on this vehicle.
The green and red LEDs provide an easy way to check if emission related monitoring systems complete their self diagnostic testing
The LED and audio tone indications are as follow:
• Green LED - Indicates that the engine systems are OK and operating normally (the number of monitors supported by the vehicle which have run and performed their self diagnostic testing is in the allowed limit).
• Red LED - Indicates that the number of monitors supported by the vehicle which have run and performed their self diagnostic testing is out of the allowed limit.
