Understanding Supported MIBs
The DPA 7630/7610 supports the following MIBs.
RFC 1213
RFC 1213 is the basic MIB 2 specification which indicates the state of network interface s an d stat is t ics for netw o rk p r ot oc ol s .
The DPA 7630/7610 supports RFC 1213 on the Ethernet interface with the followi ng cavea ts :
The digital telephony interfaces are not listed in the ifTable.
ifAdminStatus cannot be written, and it is fixed at “up”.
ifLastCha nge ret urn s as “0”.
ifSpecific returns as “0 , 0 ”.
Understanding the DPA 7630/7610
78-11069-03
atTable can no t be w r itt en .
No “ip***” values can be written.
You cannot write to “tcpConnState” for an active TCP connection.
The DPA 7630/7610 does not implement the External Gateway Protocol
(EGP).
RMON
The DPA 7630 /7610 impleme nts the Et hernet Statis tics gro up in Remo te Netw ork Monitori ng ( RM O N ) , with the excep t io n of “E therStatsS ta tu s .” Th is is fixed at “valid” and ca nn o t b e w r it te n.
Cisco CDP MIB
Cisco D is c ove r y P ro to c o l (CDP) is a meth od that Cisco devices us e to adver tise their presence and to discover information about other nearby devices. The DPA 7630/7610 implements all objects in this MIB with the exception of “cdpGlobalRun”. This object returns “true” when read, and cannot be written using S N MP.

Cisco Process MIB
This MIB describes the processes currently running on the device. However, because the DPA 7630/7610 has threads, rather than processes, running on it the MIB is implement ed w ith the following caveats:
The amount of memory allocated is not recorded on a per-thread basis.
Therefore, cp mP roc Ex tM emAllocated and cpmPro cEx tM e m Fre ed are returned as 0.
All threads run at the same priority. Therefore, for every process
cpmProc E x tPr iority wil l be returned as “no rmal.”
It is not possible to change a process’s priority so attempts to write
“cpmProcEx tP r ior it y” ar e u n suc cess f u l.
Calista DPA MIB
The DPA 7630/7610 supports an additional DPA-specific Cisco MIB in version
1.2(1 ) and late r. The MIB O ID is : For an explanation of this MIB, refer to the SNMP v2 MIBs available at the

Why is the DPA 7630/7610 Needed?

If you want to migrate your telephony system from a Definity G3 PBX or a Meridian 1 PBX to Cisco CallManager, you must decide whether to do a complete cutover to Cis c o CallManager or to migrate slowly. If you do a comp lete cutover to Cisco CallMan ager and C is co ’s voice m ai l so lution, you do n o t n ee d th e DPA 7630/7610. However, if you are slowly migrating your systems, you might want to mai nt ain s om e phon es on the De f i nity or Me ridia n 1 PB X while ins t all ing new phones on the Cisco CallManager system. You might want to use your existing O ct el voice mail s y s tem w it h your Cis c o CallManager sys t em . In t he s e cases, the D PA 7630/761 0 ca n as sis t y our m i grat io n to Cisco Cal lM anager.

Can I Just Use SMDI?

One difficulty with m i g ra tio n is that voi ce mail sy stems such as Octel w er e designed to integrate to only one PBX at a time. To resolve this difficulty, many people u s e S i mplified M ess ag e Desk I nt e r fac e ( SMDI), wh ic h was de sig ned to enable integ rated voice mail s ervi ces to mult iple cli ents .
Understanding How the DPA 7630/7610 Works
However, to use SMDI , y our vo i ce m a il s yst em m u st meet several q ua lifi cat io n s:
It must have sufficient database capacity to support two PBX systems
simultan eo u sly an d t o as so ciate each ma ilbox with th e c or r ec t P B X in ord e r to send M W I in f orm ation on the correct link.
It mus t be possible to physi cally con nect th e I P n e t wo r k to the vo ice
messagi ng syste m w hile ma in ta in in g the existi ng physi cal li nk to the PBX.
It must sup p ort an alo g integrati on . SMDI is pr i m arily an anal og technolog y.
Additionally, SMDI requires reconfiguration of your existing telephony network.

What If I Cannot Use SMDI?

SMDI might not be an option for you, particularly if you are using a digital interface on y o ur Oc t el systems. O ct el s yst em s w ith d ig it a l li ne car d s emulate digital phones, appearing to the PBX as digital extensions, referred to as per-port or PBX integration cards (PIC). On PIC systems, the voice and data streams (for setting M W I ) ar e o n th e same path . Th e MWIs are set an d cl ear ed v ia feature access codes on dedicated ports. Because these PIC ports use proprietary

Choosing an Integration Mode

The DPA 7630/7610 enables you to integrate the Cisco CallManager, Octel, and Meridia n 1 or Def i ni ty s ys tem s. Depe nding on t he n e eds of y our ne tw ork, y ou can choos e a m o n g s eve r al diffe re nt integration methods .
Select an integration mode based on the needs of your IP telephony network:
Simple—Used to integrate Cisco CallManager with existing Octel voice mail
systems. In this solution, you are not using a Definity or Meridian 1 PBX system, o r yo u are cho o sin g not to in teg ra te them w ith y o ur I P telepho ny system. See “Using the Simple Integration Mode” section on page 2-2.
Hybrid—Used to integrate Cisco CallManager with existing Octel voice mail
systems and Definity or Meridian 1 PBX systems. See “Using the Hybrid
Integration Mode” section on page 2-7.
Multiple—Used to integrate the systems in larger networks using a
combination of simple and hybrid scenarios, which requires multiple DPA 7630/7610 systems. See “Using the Multiple Integration” section on

Understanding the Simple Integration Mode

In this integration, all 24 ports on the DPA 7630/7610 connect to the Octel system, providing 24 Octel ports for call and MWI processing. The DPA 7630/7610 translates the messaging between Cisco CallManager and the Octel sy s t em.
Understanding Interactions with the Octel System
The Oc t el voice m ail system no rmally works by e m ulating a set o f digita l P B X phones. W h en a cal l goes to voi ce m ai l, t he PBX “ring s” o ne o f th ose emulate d phones. The Octe l voice mail syst em re ad s the emula ted p ho n e d isp l a y an d gathers information about the call such as the caller, calling party, and the reason that the call was forwarded to voice mail; then, the Octel system answers the call.

When you use the DPA 7630/7610, it emulates a PBX for the Octel voice mail system an d em u la tes up to 24 C isco I P Ph on es in Cisco CallM an ag er. In th is setup, wh en a call goes t o voice mail, Cisco CallM an ag er r ing s o ne o f th e emulated Cisco IP Phones (which is a port on the DPA 7630/7610). The DPA 7630/7610 translates this ringing to a corresponding Octel voice mail port. Other aspects of the phone behavior that the DPA 7630/7610 translates include the formatting of the information on the display, line light behavior, call transfer ring, an d settin g MW Is.
For example, to activate a Definity MWI, the Octel system goes off-hook on one of its ports and dials a feature access code (typically *4) followed by the extension number. The DPA 7630 mu s t recognize th is an d tr an slat e t he sequen ce to th e appropri ate s et of I P messages fo r Ci s co CallM an ag er.
Understanding Interactions with the Cisco CallManager System
The DPA 7630/7610 connects to the IP network and accesses a Cisco C all M an ag er TF TP s er ver t o g et it s p ort co nfigu r ati on and Cisco CallManager list. After the configuration information has been transmitted using TFTP, the DPA 7630/7610 tries to register its virtual port (port 25) to the first Cisc o CallManager fro m th e Ci s co CallM an ager list u sin g Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP).
This virtual por t handles all the MWI commands sent f r om the Octel , destined to the Cisco Call Manager . As Octel voice and MWI ports are connected to the DPA 7630/7 610, each connected port on the DPA 7630/7610 the n registers as a 30 VIP IP phone with the C is co Cal l M anage r.

Understanding Interaction with the Octel and PBX Systems
A Cisco CallMan ag er I P -bas e d tel ep ho ny s y stem can be co nnected to a P B X using an ISDN PRI card in the Definity or Meridian 1 PBX systems and an ISDN PRI gateway on the IP network. This setup allows users on the IP phones and users on the Definity or Meridian 1 digital phones to make and receive telephone calls to each othe r.
However, this co nfigurat io n does no t resol ve many of t he follow in g issues w i th the voice m ail system :
The PRI link loses information.
When a u ser o n an I P p ho n e a ccesses the voice m ai l sy s te m d ir ec tly, the extensi on numbe r of the IP phone is not tr ansfe rred acro ss the ISDN PRI l ink. Therefore, the voice mail system cannot give the correct greeting to the user of the IP phone, and users must enter their voice mailbox number.
The voice m a il s ystem cann ot activate the M W I li gh t of IP p ho n es .
On a Defi nity P B X , th e voice mail s y ste m co n tr ol s th e ph o ne s ’ MWI lights by dialing feature access codes. This does not work across the ISDN PRI link. For exampl e, if IP ph o ne 1 23 4 is lef t a m e s sag e , th e vo ice mail s yst em notifies the PBX to light MWI 1234, which the PBX considers an error becaus e it doe s not ha ve exten sion 1234 .
2-8
To resolve these problems, up to 16 of the ports on the DPA 7630/7610 can connec t t o th e O ctel system in the s am e way as in the sim p le in tegr at io n m o de. You can then set up a separate hunt group for the IP phones, which is accessed using one of the line s conne cted to the DPA 7630/7610. This solution enables the following call types to function properly because the caller and number are no longer l ost:
Direct ca ll s to the voice ma i l sy stem from an I P ph o ne
Calls to an I P p h on e t h at are forwar de d to voi ce m ai l
Because the Octel voice mail system cannot determine which MWI lines are used for parti cu lar e xte nsi on s, t he DPA 7630/7610 must ha ndle all M WI re ques t s from the Octel system. Therefore, the remaining 8 ports on the DPA 7630/7610 must connect to th e De fi ni ty or Meri di an 1 PBX s ys tem . The DPA 7630/7610 per for ms a pass-th r o ugh oper at io n on these po rt s , a llow in g the Oc tel , D e fin ity, and Meridian 1 systems to function as before.

However, because the DPA 7630/7610 does not have knowledge about the dial plans, it sends the M WI co m ma nd t o th e C is c o CallManag er and the D efinit y or Meridian 1 P B X sy stem. The DPA 7630/7610 ig no res a ny erro r s r ece ived fr om either th e PBX or Ci s co CallManager.
Understanding Interactions with the Cisco CallManager System
Using the hybrid integration method, the DPA 7630/7610 emulates up to 17 IP phones. There is one emulated phone for each line (up to 16) connected to the Octel sy st em a nd o n e f or s e tt in g MWIs on th e Ci s co CallM an ag er sys tem . Th e remaining eight ports on the DPA 7630/7610 connect to the Definity or Meridian 1 syste m and do no t ap pe ar in C isco CallM an ag er.
Because the lines provide specific services (incoming calls, outgoing calls, setting MWIs), you need to con fig u re th em accordingl y in C isco CallM an ag er. Ref er to the “Configuring the DPA Ports and Phones” section on page 4-10 for details.

Implementing the Hybrid Integration

T o impl e ment t he hyb rid i nte gra t io n, you mus t con ne ct t he DPA 7630/7610 to th e Octel, Cisco CallManager, and Definity or Meridian 1 systems using these guidelines.

Configuring the DPA Ports and Phones

From the perspective of the DPA 7630/7610, several types of ports exist:
Call ports—Handle call processing (incoming and outgoing calls).
Octel MW I p o rts —R ec eive M W I co m mands from th e O ctel system.
Virtual port—Send MWI co mm a nd s t o Ci s co CallM an ag er.
PBX MWI ports—Send MWI on the Definity and Meridian 1 PBX systems
and are only present in the hybrid integration mode.
To Cisco C all M an ag er, these p orts on th e DPA appear as IP phon es, but the PBX MWI por ts d o not app ear in Cis co CallManag er . The C isc o Cal lMana ger d ata bas e also contains records of all the end-user phones. You must configure each of these phones in Cisco CallManager to ensure that calls are processed properly. You access the phones using the Devices > Phone menu in Cisco CallM an ag er.

You should not need to make any changes to your Octel system. However, you should v er ify you r co nf igu rat ion a nd ob tai n in for mat ion from the Octel sys tem to properly set up the DPA 7630/7610. This information should already be configured if you previously used Octel and Definity or Meridian 1 systems togeth er.

Merid ian 1 PBX sys tems se t MWI differently so you do not need to set this for the DPA 7610.

Determining Incoming Call Mode

The Octel sy s tem ha s tw o met ho d s o f re ceivi ng i nc oming calls o n a M e ri di an 1 system, using Hunt or Automatic Call Distribution (ACD). The Hunt method involves groups of forwarded phones, which is similar to the method used in Cisco C all M anager. However, the Meridian 1 s yst em h a s a r es t rict io n on t he number o f hop s in a f orw ar di ng ch ain (simi lar t o th e F or ward M ax H op C oun t setting in Cisco CallManager). This setting is fixed between 18 and 30 hops (depending on the PBX version), and you cannot modify it. This restriction limits both the number of phones available to the hunt group and the number of Octel ports that can be part of the group.
T o avoid this restriction, you can use ACD groups, which can be much larger than the hunt groups.

Regardless of the method you use, you must verify the method in use so you can set the proper setting on the DPA 7610. To quickly verify this method, on the Meridian 1 system, check the configuration of key 0 on the phones connected to the Octel s y stem:
If key 0 is defined to be an ACD key, then Octel is in ACD mode.
If key 0 is defined to be an SCR or SCN key, then Octel is in Hunt mode.

Assigning Incoming, Outgoing, and MWI Lines

On the Octel system, you must specify how each line is used, following these guidelines:
When pos si bl e, s e pa ra te the lines so t ha t d is t in ct li ne s ar e u sed f o r th e t hre e
types of call handling: incoming calls, outgoing calls, and MWI. You can a s s ig n a single line to p rocess outgoi ng call s a n d MWI co m mands.
However, you must not have a single line supporting both incoming call processing and MWI commands.
Follow spec ific g ui de lin es w hen physi cal ly co nnectin g t he s e l in es to the
DPA 7630/7610 (see “Connecting to the Telco Connectors” section on
