Installing the Cisco 676 ADSL Router
The following sectio ns will pr ovide the in format ion necess ary to ins tall the Cisco 676 ADSL Router. Please refer to Chapter 2 of the
Cisco 676 ADSL
Router Installation and Configuration Manual
for detailed installation
instructions and procedure illustrations.
Connecting the Cables
Figure 2-7 in the “
Cisco 676 ADSL Router Installation and Operation
Manual
” shows where to connect all cables to the rear panel connectors of
the Cisco 676 ADSL Router.
Step 1
Plug the power connector into the back of the unit.
Step 2
Connect the Ethernet cable to the Cisco 676 ENET connector.
Step 3
If the computer at the customer premise has only a single Ethernet-equipped computer, attach the Cisco 676 to the computer’ s Ethe rn et ad apter wit h the cr osso v er cabl e pro vi ded. Otherwise, connec t the Cisco 6 76’s Ethernet port to an Ethe rn et hub using a straight-through cable.
Step 4
Connect the provided telephone cable to the Cisco 676 WALL connector and then connect the other end of the cable to the telephone wall-mounted connector.
The POTS Splitter Configuration
A POTS splitter separates data sign als from voice sign als on your phone line. The POTS spl itter works by ru nning a separate data line from the voice line, so that the AD SL mod em has a d edi cated cabl e fo r data tra nsm iss ion .
Figure 2-4 in the
Cisco 676 ADSL Router Installation and Operation
Manual
shows a POTS splitter configuration. If you are using an external POTS splitter, connect the provided telephone cable to the wall connector that is labelled as going to the external POTS splitter.
Note: Contact your s erv ice pr ovider if you have questions regarding you r configur a tion.

EZ-DSL (Splitterless) Configuration
In the EZ-DSL configuration, your phone equipment is not connected to a POTS splitter. Without a POTS Splitter and under certain circumstances, transient noise from the phone can interfere with the modem’s operation, and the modem can cause noise on the phone line.
To protect this from happening, connect small microfilters to the phone lines. Fi gur e 2 -6 in the
Cisco 676 AD SL R ou ter I ns t allation and O peration
Manual
shows a splitterless configuration. Make sure there is a micr of i lter
connected to the line of each telephone that connects to your network.
Installing the EZ-DSLTM Microfilter
Use EZ-DSL microfilters to connect ph ones at the customer premise to the premise phone wi ring. The microf ilters are designed to pre vent i nterf erence between the modem and the phone set, as well as to reduce the effect of POTS generated noise on the ADSL transceiver.
Step 1
Identify all home telephones plugged in and in service. An EZ-DSL mic rofil ter should be inst alled a t eac h home te lephone .
Step 2
Unplug the telephone from the wall. Plug the telephone cord into the end of the EZ-DSL microfilter marked PHONE.
Step 3
Using the 3-inch telephone cord provided, plug one end of the cord into the microfilter marked WALL. Plug the other end of the cord into the telephone wall receptacle.
Step 4
After you complete the installation, verify that your telephone service works. If your telephone service does not work, disconnect the EZ-DSL microfilter and contact your local telephone company or Cisco Systems.
Note: The microfilters do not function if connected incorrectly. To ensure that the micr o f ilters function, conn ect th e wall side of the micr ofilter to the wall jack and the telephone side of the microfilter to the telephone.

2
If the WAN LNK LED turns off after the 676 has successfully been transferring data between your personal computer and your service provider, the 676 or the service provider’s server may have a timeout set.
Solution:
Call your service pro vider with as close to an exact len gth of time as possible you remain connected before the 676 disconnects from the Internet.
