SUBJECT:Electronic EntryModule FailsTo Respond MODELS:
1996 - 1998 (SR) Viper Coupe1997 - 1998 (SR) Viper Roadster SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The Electronic Entry Module (EEM) software may cause the module to fail to respond. If the module has failed to respond, one or more of the followingsymptoms may be experienced:
1. Vehicle does not respond to transmitters operation.
2. Security alarm LED on the dash is not flashing.
3. Doors do not open when outside buttons are pressed.
4. Vehicle theft alarm prevents the vehicle from starting.
5. Electronic entry module does not communicate with the DRBIII.
6. On 1998 MY vehicles the park/tail lamps randomly flash for 3 minutes, without a push of the transmitter buttons. DIAGNOSIS:
Low battery voltage can also cause the above symptoms to be present. Check open circuit battery voltage to ensure that the battery is above 12.0 volts. Ifthe voltage is below 12.0 volts, correct the condition before proceeding. If any of the above symptoms are identified, perform the Repair Procedure. PARTS & EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

This bulletin involves the replacement of the EEM and programming the EEM to the transmitters for the 1998 model year. The 1996 to 1997 model yearvehicle repair involves installing a kit that contains two preset transmitters, EEM and external antenna. 1996 MY Vipers
1. Remove the driver's side knee blocker.
2. Remove the strap holding the EEM in the bracket below the dash.
3. Disconnect the EEM and remove.
4. At the EEM harness connector, remove the terminal wedge.
5. Remove terminal "D" from the green connector and tape it back onto the harness.
6. Install the antenna coax ground into cavity "D" of the green connector.
7. From the antenna, install the coax center lead into cavity "E" of the green connector.
8. Route the antenna cable rearward in the vehicle under the center console cover and tape in place.
9. Connect the new EEM and secure in the bracket with the strap.
10. Install the knee blocker.
11. Test both transmitters for proper function. The EEM in the kit is already programmed to both transmitters. The customers old transmitters shouldbe disposed of as they will not work with the new EEM.
1997 MY Vipers
1. Remove the driver's side knee blocker.
2. Remove the strap holding the EEM in the bracket below the dash.
3. Disconnect the EEM and remove.
4. Discard the external antenna included with the kit. The 1997 MY Viper already has one installed.
5. Connect the new EEM and secure in the bracket with the strap.
6. Install the knee blocker.
7. Test both transmitters for proper function. The EEM in the kit is already programmed to both transmitters. The customers old transmitters shouldbe disposed of as they will not work with the new EEM.
1998 MY Vipers
1. Remove the driver's side knee blocker.
2. Remove the strap holding the EEM in the bracket below the dash.
3. Disconnect the EEM and remove.

4. Connect the new EEM and secure in bracket with the strap.
5. Install the knee blocker.
6. Program all customer transmitters to the new EEM using Test 1B in the Vehicle Theft Security System section of the 1996-1998 Viper BodyDiagnostic Procedures Manual (Publication No. 81-699-97122).
7. Test the transmitters for proper function.
:NOTE
THE NEW EEM HAS REVISED HORN CHIRP LOGIC THAT WAS IMPLEMENTED WITH THE 1998 MY. THE 1996 AND 1997 MODULESCHIRPED THE HORN ONCE UPON PRESSING THE BUTTON ON THE TRANSMITTER FOLLOWED BY THE SECURITY ALARM LEDILLUMINATING STEADILY FOR 15 SECONDS WHILE THE ALARM WAS ARMING AND THEN FOLLOWED BY A SECOND HORN

Electrostatic Discharge Symbol
(ESD)
All Electrostatic Discharge sensitive components are solid state and a symbol is used to indicate this. When handling any component with thissymbol, comply with the following procedures to reduce the possibility of electrostatic charge build-up on the body and inadvertent discharge into thecomponent. If it is not known whether the part is ESD sensitive, assume that it is.
1. Always touch a known good ground before handling the part. This should be repeated while handling the part, especially after sliding across a seat, sitting down from a standing position, or walking a distance.
2. Avoid touching electrical terminals of the part, unless instructed to do so by a written procedure.3. When using a voltmeter, be sure to connect the ground lead first.4. Do not remove the part from its protective packing until it is time to install the part.5. Before removing the part from its package, ground the package to a known good ground on the vehicle.
Fasteners
Shock Tower To Spring Minimum Clearance Area
CAUTION:
NO
At no time when servicing a vehicle, can a sheet metal screw, bolt, or other metal fastener be installed in the strut tower to take the place ofan original plastic clip. Also, holes can be drilled into the front strut tower in the area shown in for the installation of any metal fasteners into thestrut tower.
Because of the minimum clearance in this area , installation of metal fasteners could damage the coil spring coating and lead to a corrosion failure of thespring. If a plastic clip is missing, or is lost or broken during servicing of a vehicle, replace it only with the equivalent part listed in the parts catalog.

­SET THE PARKING BRAKE WHEN WORKING ON ANY VEHICLE. AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHOULD BE IN PARK. AMANUAL TRANSMISSION SHOULD BE IN NEUTRAL.
- OPERATE THE ENGINE ONLY IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA.
- KEEP AWAY FROM MOVING PARTS WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, ESPECIALLY THE FAN AND BELTS.
­TO PREVENT SERIOUS BURNS, AVOID CONTACT WITH HOT PARTS SUCH AS THE RADIATOR, EXHAUST MANIFOLD(S), TAILPIPE, CATALYTIC CONVERTER, AND MUFFLER.
- DO NOT ALLOW FLAME OR SPARKS NEAR THE BATTERY. GASES ARE ALWAYS PRESENT IN AND AROUND THE BATTERY.
- ALWAYS REMOVE RINGS, WATCHES, LOOSE HANGING JEWELRY, AND LOOSE CLOTHING.
Positive Temperature Coefficient
Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) devices are being used for circuit protection. These PTC's act like a solid state fuse. They are located in thejunction block, and are used to protect such items as: power door lock motors, power windows, and various engine solenoids.

Connector and Splice Identification
The connector and Splice numbering used in the vehicle has a letter prefix to identity what harness the connector/splice is located in. A list of these letterdesignations follows:
- B - Body or EDW harness
- C - Dome harness
- D - Door harness
- E - Engine harness
- F - Fuel rail harness
- J - Jumper harness
- L - Liftgate harness
- P - Instrument panel harness
- S - Seat harness
- T - Trailer tow harness
When looking at a splice reference the alpha code for what harness the splice is located in will come first, then an S to indicate a splice, and finally thesplice number. An example of this would be ESO2.

Each wire shown in the diagrams contains a code which identifies the main circuit, part of the main circuit, gauge of wire and color. The color is shownas a two-letter code, which can be identified by referring to the Wire Color Code chart. If the wire has a tracer and it is a standard color, an asterisk willfollow the main wire color. If the tracer is non-standard, the main wire color will have a slash after it, followed by the tracer color.(/)

1. Disconnect battery.2. Disconnect the connector (that is to be repaired) from its mating half/component.3. Cut off the existing wire connector directly behind the insulator. Remove of tape from the harness.4. Stagger cut all wires on the harness side at intervals.5. Remove of insulation from each wire on the harness side. 1 inch
Stagger Cutting Wires (Typical)
6. Stagger cut the matching wires on the repair connector assembly in the opposite order as was done on the harness side of the repair. Allow extra length for soldered connections. Check that the overall length is the same as the original.

7. Remove of insulation from each wire.8. Place a piece of heat-shrink tubing over one side of the wire. Be sure the tubing will be long enough to cover and seal the entire repair area.

Wire Repair
9. Spread the strands of the wire apart on each part of the exposed wires (Example 1).
10. Push the two ends of wire together until the strands of wire are close to the insulation (Example 2).11. Twist the wires together (Example 3).12. Solder the connection together using rosin core solder only. 13. Center the heat-shrink tubing over the joint and heat using a heat gun. Heat the joint until the tubing is tightly sealed and sealant comes out of bothDo not use acid core solder.

Terminal Removal Using Special Tool
4. Position the connector locking finger away from the terminal using the proper pick from Special Tool Kit . Pull on the wire to remove the6680
terminal from the connector.
5. Reset the terminal locking tang, if it has one.6. Insert the removed wire in the same cavity on the repair connector.

7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for each wire in the connector, being sure that all wires are inserted into the proper cavities.8. Insert the connector locking wedge into the repaired connector, if required.9. Connect the connector to its mating half/component.
10. Connect the battery and test all affected systems.
Diode Replacement
Diode Identification
Do not use acid core solder.
1. Disconnect the battery.2. Locate the diode in the harness and remove the protective covering.3. Remove the diode from the harness, pay attention to the current flow direction. 4. Remove the insulation from the wires in the harness. Only remove enough insulation to solder in the new diode.5. Install the new diode in the harness, making sure current flow is correct.6. Solder the connection together using rosin core solder only. 7. Tape the diode to the harness using electrical tape, making sure the diode is completely sealed from the elements.8. Re-connect the battery and test affected systems.
Terminal Replacement
1. Disconnect the battery.2. Disconnect the connector being repaired from its mating half/component.

Wire Repair
When replacing or repairing a wire, it is important that the correct gauge be used as shown in the wiring diagrams. The wires must also be held securelyin place to prevent damage to the insulation.
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove of insulation from each end of the wire.1 inch
3. Place a piece of heat-shrink tubing over one side of the wire. Be sure the tubing will be long enough to cover and seal the entire repair area.

Keyless Entry Module: Diagnostic Aids
Intermittent and Poor Connections
Most intermittent electrical problems are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring. It is also possible for a sticking component or relay to cause aproblem. Before condemning a component or wiring assembly check the following items.
- Connectors are fully seated
- Spread terminals, or terminal push out
- Terminals in the wiring assembly are fully seated into the connector/component and locked in position
- Dirt or corrosion on the terminals. Any amount of corrosion or dirt could cause an intermittent problem
- Damaged connector/component casing exposing the item to dirt and moisture
- Wire insulation that has rubbed through causing a short to ground
- Some or all of the wiring strands broken inside of the insulation covering.
- Wiring broken inside of the insulation
Troubleshooting Tests
Before beginning any tests on a vehicle's electrical system, use the wiring diagrams to study the circuit. Also refer to Troubleshooting Wiring Problemssection.

Troubleshooting Tools TROUBLESHOOTING TOOLS
When diagnosing a problem in an electrical circuit, there are several common tools necessary. These tools are listed and explained below.
- - This is a test wire used to connect two points of a circuit. It can be used to bypass an open in a circuit.Jumper Wire

Troubleshooting Wiring Problems
When troubleshooting wiring problems there are six steps which can aid in the procedure. The steps are listed and explained below. Always check fornon-factory items added to the vehicle before doing any diagnosis. If the vehicle is equipped with these items, disconnect them to verify these add-onitems are not the cause of the problem.
1. Verify the problem.
2. Verify any related symptoms. Do this by performing operational checks on components that are in the same circuit. Refer to the wiring diagrams.
3. Analyze the symptoms. Use the wiring diagrams to determine what the circuit is doing, where the problem most likely is occurring and where the diagnosis will continue.

Keyless Entry Module: Description and Operation ENTRY MODULE
The Viper Coupe and Roadster utilize an Entry Module (EM). In 1996 this system replaced the prior years Vehicle Theft Alarm and Remotekeyless Entry modules. The module is located on the left side of the transmission tunnel, above the knee bolster. It is secured with a rubber strap. Itcontains a 32-way and two 6-way connectors. There is a green six way connector and a black six way connector. The module is connected to theCCD bus and transmits the "OK to run" message to the PCM when the theft alarm function is not tripped. It also receives the vehicle speedmessage from the bus and through a hardwired backup circuit.
The Coupe and Roadster will use electric door latches to accomplish opening and closing of the vehicle doors and electronics to accomplish thelock function that was typically performed with linkage inside the door. The system utilizes electric latches inside the door and micro switchesboth inside and outside the vehicle. These switches are inputs to the EM and if the conditions are correct, the EM will unlatch the doors. The lockfunction is simply the ignoring of the switch inputs that would normally cause the EM to open the doors. There is no mechanical lock linkageinside the door. This results in fewer moving parts and problems associated with packaging the linkage mechanisms.
The Entry Module provides remote keyless entry functions as well as vehicle theft alarm functions, electric locking/unlocking and the opening orpower unlatching of the doors. The Coupe and Roadster will power unlatch the doors based only on inputs from the switches on the inside or theoutside of the vehicle. The unlock button on the fob will not power unlatch the door. It also allows for the rolling lock feature, the only differencefrom other rolling lock systems is that specific throttle angle is not required for the locks to actuate. It is strictly a speed based system.

The inside and outside door handles control micro switches that are the inputs to the EM. Located below the inside door switches are the lockrocker switches with LED indicators. The LED lock indicator informs the driver and passenger of the lock status of the doors. If the light is ON,the doors are unlocked. Once the vehicle is started and driven approximately the doors will automatically lock and the LED will beextinguished at this time. The rolling lock feature cannot be disabled. If there is no activity for approximately one minute (input to the EM) and thekey is in the "ON" or "OFF" position, the LED will be turned oft to reduce battery draw.

The driver and passenger lock switches are wired in parallel and form one input to the EM. When the EM receives a lock input, both doors arelocked. When an unlock signal is input to the EM, both doors are unlocked. If the key is ON, and an inside door handle input is seen and vehiclespeed is below , both doors will be unlocked (and the door's handle that was actuated will be power unlatched). The lock switches are amomentary contact rocker type switch and either switch will lock or unlock both doors. In case of an electrical failure that would render the EMsystem inoperable, there is an emergency mechanical release for the door located in the "B" pillar area of the door. This can be accessed throughthe liftglass area from outside the vehicle.

The key fobs are unique to Viper and utilize a rolling code system. The rolling code feature changes a portion of the key fob message each time itis used. The key fob message and the receiver message change together. Under certain conditions with a rolling code system, the receiver andtransmitter can fall out of synchronization. By pressing the lock and unlock buttons together, and holding until the horn chirps, the system willre-synchronize. The system will take to respond with a horn chirp and normal operation resumes. This is not the same asprogramming a key fob.

The system will accept up to four fob codes and the system can be programmed with either the DRB III or by connecting a programming wire toground and placing the module in programming mode. If the system is set up for programming, all key fobs for this vehicle must be programmedat the same time. When the module is placed in the program mode, all previous information from the transmitters is erased and no information iswritten there until the system recognizes a valid key fob. Pressing both lock and unlock buttons on the key fob at the same time will cause thesystem to respond with a horn chirp after approximately ten seconds. Then any other transmitters may be programmed. There is a time out after of inactivity (no further transmitters recognized). If the system times out, it will have to be returned to the programming mode with theDRB III or by disconnecting and re-connecting the green programming wire located near the module connectors. The DRB "Theft Alarm MonitorScreen" contains information about how many fobs have been programmed and if a valid fob message has been received. The horn chirp featurecan not be disabled.
The security portion of the module performs typical security functions. The system can be actively armed by pressing the lock button on the keyfob. The system responds with a single horn chirp, if the message is from a valid (programmed) key fob. This information can also be accessed onthe VTSS monitor screen with the DRB III. The system will passively arm if the ignition is turned OFF and the key is removed, the hood and liftglass (coupe) are closed, and a door is open. Pressing the lock button on the door and closing the door will start a arming period. Thesecurity LED will turn ON during the arming process and the horn will chirp on completion of the arming process. The security LED will thenflash at a 10% duty cycle. The system can only be disarmed with a programmed key fob.

When the alarm is tripped, the park lamps and the horn will flash indicating that the vehicle has been tampered with. The alarm can be tripped byopening doors, hood, liftglass (coupe) or turning the ignition ON. Once tripped, the alarm will sound for . The park and tail lamps willflash for approximately . The PCM will not allow the engine to start. If the EM has been tripped and have passed, the hornwill chirp 3 times upon unlocking with the key fob to alert the driver that a theft condition may have taken place. Normal disarming with the keyfob will result in two sort horn chirps.
Coupe
The only way to access the driver compartment of the vehicle once it is locked, (without setting OFF the alarm) is with the key fob. There is anexterior lock cylinder for the lift glass, that allows opening with the key. This cylinder is not equipped with a disarm function. If the liftglass isopened with the key when the alarm is armed, it will set OFF the alarm. There is a liftglass ajar switch that mounts on the left gas prop (on the

coupe). When the liftglass is opened, the outer shell of the gas prop allows a micro switch to close and the liftglass ajar circuit is grounded. TheEM monitors this circuit and knows the glass is open. If the liftglass is broken, the prop will extend and trip the alarm. By utilizing a prop switch inthis manner, the vehicle is protected against opening or breakage of the liftglass. The roadster trunk latch and key cylinder are not protected by thetheft system. Opening of the trunk when the theft alarm is armed will not cause it to be tripped.

Diagnostics
The EM system is fully addressable with DRB III and it is the recommended method for diagnosis. The EM system does not display anyDiagnostic Trouble Codes. All of the input switches to the EM can be read with DRB under the I/O screen. The doors can be unlatched with theDRB under actuator tests. If the inputs are OK and the outputs can be cycled with the DRB, the problem is usually the Entry Module.

This bulletin involves the replacement of the EEM and programming the EEM to the transmitters for the 1998 model year. The 1996 to 1997 model yearvehicle repair involves installing a kit that contains two preset transmitters, EEM and external antenna. 1996 MY Vipers
1. Remove the driver's side knee blocker.
2. Remove the strap holding the EEM in the bracket below the dash.
3. Disconnect the EEM and remove.
4. At the EEM harness connector, remove the terminal wedge.
5. Remove terminal "D" from the green connector and tape it back onto the harness.
6. Install the antenna coax ground into cavity "D" of the green connector.
7. From the antenna, install the coax center lead into cavity "E" of the green connector.
8. Route the antenna cable rearward in the vehicle under the center console cover and tape in place.
9. Connect the new EEM and secure in the bracket with the strap.
10. Install the knee blocker.
11. Test both transmitters for proper function. The EEM in the kit is already programmed to both transmitters. The customers old transmitters shouldbe disposed of as they will not work with the new EEM.
1997 MY Vipers
1. Remove the driver's side knee blocker.

4. Discard the external antenna included with the kit. The 1997 MY Viper already has one installed.

DIAGNOSIS:
Low battery voltage can also cause the above symptoms to be present. Check open circuit battery voltage to ensure that the battery is above 12.0 volts. This bulletin involves the replacement of the EEM and programming the EEM to the transmitters for the 1998 model year. The 1996 to 1997 model yearvehicle repair involves installing a kit that contains two preset transmitters, EEM and external antenna. 1996 MY Vipers
1. Remove the driver's side knee blocker.
2. Remove the strap holding the EEM in the bracket below the dash.
3. Disconnect the EEM and remove.
4. At the EEM harness connector, remove the terminal wedge.
5. Remove terminal "D" from the green connector and tape it back onto the harness.
6. Install the antenna coax ground into cavity "D" of the green connector.
7. From the antenna, install the coax center lead into cavity "E" of the green connector.
8. Route the antenna cable rearward in the vehicle under the center console cover and tape in place.
9. Connect the new EEM and secure in the bracket with the strap.
10. Install the knee blocker.
11. Test both transmitters for proper function. The EEM in the kit is already programmed to both transmitters. The customers old transmitters shouldbe disposed of as they will not work with the new EEM.
1997 MY Vipers
1. Remove the driver's side knee blocker.
2. Remove the strap holding the EEM in the bracket below the dash.
3. Disconnect the EEM and remove.
4. Discard the external antenna included with the kit. The 1997 MY Viper already has one installed.
5. Connect the new EEM and secure in the bracket with the strap.

7. Test both transmitters for proper function. The EEM in the kit is already programmed to both transmitters. The customers old transmitters shouldbe disposed of as they will not work with the new EEM.

Electrostatic Discharge Symbol

All Electrostatic Discharge sensitive components are solid state and a symbol is used to indicate this. When handling any component with thissymbol, comply with the following procedures to reduce the possibility of electrostatic charge build-up on the body and inadvertent discharge into thecomponent. If it is not known whether the part is ESD sensitive, assume that it is.
1. Always touch a known good ground before handling the part. This should be repeated while handling the part, especially after sliding across a seat, sitting down from a standing position, or walking a distance.
2. Avoid touching electrical terminals of the part, unless instructed to do so by a written procedure.3. When using a voltmeter, be sure to connect the ground lead first.4. Do not remove the part from its protective packing until it is time to install the part.5. Before removing the part from its package, ground the package to a known good ground on the vehicle.

At no time when servicing a vehicle, can a sheet metal screw, bolt, or other metal fastener be installed in the strut tower to take the place ofan original plastic clip. Also, holes can be drilled into the front strut tower in the area shown in for the installation of any metal fasteners into thestrut tower.
Because of the minimum clearance in this area , installation of metal fasteners could damage the coil spring coating and lead to a corrosion failure of thespring. If a plastic clip is missing, or is lost or broken during servicing of a vehicle, replace it only with the equivalent part listed in the parts catalog.

Remove the insulation from the wires in the harness. Only remove enough insulation to solder in the new diode.5. Install the new diode in the harness, making sure current flow is correct.6. Solder the connection together using rosin core solder only. 7. Tape the diode to the harness using electrical tape, making sure the diode is completely sealed from the elements.8. Re-connect the battery and test affected systems.

When replacing or repairing a wire, it is important that the correct gauge be used as shown in the wiring diagrams. The wires must also be held securelyin place to prevent damage to the insulation.
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove of insulation from each end of the wire.1 inch
3. Place a piece of heat-shrink tubing over one side of the wire. Be sure the tubing will be long enough to cover and seal the entire repair area.
4. Spread the strands of the wire apart on each part of the exposed wires (Example 1).
5. Push the two ends of wire together until the strands of wire are close to the insulation (Example 2).
6. Twist the wires together (Example 3).
7. Solder the connection together using rosin core solder only. Do not use acid core solder.

Keyless Entry Module: Diagnostic Aids
Intermittent and Poor Connections
Most intermittent electrical problems are caused by faulty electrical connections or wiring. It is also possible for a sticking component or relay to cause aproblem. Before condemning a component or wiring assembly check the following items.
- Connectors are fully seated
- Spread terminals, or terminal push out
- Terminals in the wiring assembly are fully seated into the connector/component and locked in position
- Dirt or corrosion on the terminals. Any amount of corrosion or dirt could cause an intermittent problem
- Damaged connector/component casing exposing the item to dirt and moisture
- Wire insulation that has rubbed through causing a short to ground
- Some or all of the wiring strands broken inside of the insulation covering.
- Wiring broken inside of the insulation
Troubleshooting Tests
Before beginning any tests on a vehicle's electrical system, use the wiring diagrams to study the circuit. Also refer to Troubleshooting Wiring Problemssection.
