SELF-TIGHTENING CLAMPS
USERS MANUAL
SELF-TIGHTENING CLAMPS
The self-tightening clamps identified below are designed for use with Chief pulling systems. Improper application may cause serious injury, damage to the clamp and void any applicable warranties. IMPORTANT: The procedures in this manual are appli-
cable to Chief’s 1 1/2” self-tightening clamp (Pt. No. 672000 - Figure 1) and 2” self-tightening clamp (Pt. No. 672034 - Figure 2). They are also applicable to the Dyna-Mo Jr. Clamp (Pt. No. 619072), Angle Bite Clamp (Pt. No. 619071
), and Bite -Tite C-Clamp (Pt.
No. CL1290CA) which are also available from Chief.
PREPARATION
Treat clamps (see Figure 3) with a small amount of anti-seize compound when new and anytime the compound is not present (after cleaning, etc.). Treat the areas indicated in Figures 4 - 6 below. NOTE: A light surface coating of anti-seize compound is enough. Too much may cause the wedge to slide too easily, result-
ing in the clamp biting too deeply into the metal to which it is attached.
APPLICATION
1) Place the clamp in the desired position and hand-tighten enough to hold it in place. WARNING: Tighten only to the point the clamp will remain in place. Use a ratchet and socket if necessary (see
Figure 7), but tighten only to the point the clamp will remain in place. Overtightening may cause the bolt or clamp to break under pulling pressure resulting in flying parts and severe personal injury and/or death.
2) Attach tower chain and remove the slack from the chain.
3) With slight pressure on the chain, tap the rear corner of the clamp with a hammer as shown in Figure 8. This will
assist wedge movement before applying higher pulling pressure.
4) NEVER USE AN IMPACT WRENCH ON CLAMP BOLT! (See Figure 9.) The clamp is designed to self-tighten as pres-
sure is applied.
