MIDI Interface for Mono / Poly Keyboard
Model 8-433 ver. 1.0
1. INTRODUCTION
MP -KBD is a M IDI re trofit f or Kor g Mono / Pol y synthesizer . The device enables instrument’s tone generators to be controlled via MIDI as a MIDI expander. MP-KBD also synchronizes the arpeggiator speed with external sequencer MIDI clock.
All MP-KBD functions can be adjusted via MID I parameters. Standar d channel and system parameters or System Exclusive Messages are used. MIDI communication channel is user definable.
Setting of al l p ara meters ca n be s tor ed in in ternal us er memory . T abl e 1 s hows def ault fac tor y settings.

1.1. INTERFACE FUNCTIO NS
Interface controls the keyboard in parallel manner. The instrument’s keyboard can also be used together with the M ID I notes . Interf ace can s ynchr onize the arpeg giator to external M IDI cl ock or ignore the synchronization data and use instrument’s internal clock generator. See pic. 1.

2.1. MIDI CHANNEL
This parameter sets the basic MIDI channel for communication with MIDI master system. Any of the 16 available channels can be set as MIDI OMNI mode as well. OMNI mode enables the instru m e nt to rece i ve dat a on all 16 MIDI channe ls si m ult an e ousl y.
Par ameter valu es a re 0 to 1 6. V alue s 0 to 15 re pre sent M ID I c hann els 1 t o 16. V alue 16 is for OMNI MODE. Value of th i s parameter can be a djusted only by MIDI System Exclusive Message – se e chapt er 3. 3.
2.2. KEY SHI FT
Key Shift para meter tran sposes the keybo ard. Ra nge of the Key Shif t is 0 to +84 semit ones. W hen the 0 value is set the lowest key of the keyboard is equal to MIDI note 0 and the highest is equal to M ID I no te n umber 43. W h en trans pos ing + 1 se mitone the lowest ke y of t he k eyb oar d h as a ss igne d the M I DI n ote n umber 1 an d the hig hest n umber 44 e tc. – whe n tra nspo s ing + 84 semito nes the lo west key of the keyboard has assigned MIDI note number 84 and the highest number 127. For more details see pic. 2.
Parame te r val ues ar e 0 t o 84. The value ca n be ad j ust ed i n two wa ys: a) by MIDI controller (Control Changes) Nr. 16 – see chapter 3.1.2. b) by SysEx Message – see chapter 3.3.
2.3. KEY PRIORITY
Value of the parameter adjusts incoming MIDI Note On/Off commands processing in case of all four tone generators of the instrument are being used.
Parameter values are 0 to 3. 0 ! LAST: Last key priority – the last pressed key always replaces the first key pressed.
1 ! HIGHER : Highe r k e y pr ior ity – i f t he las t pr es sed k ey is of h ighe r ton e than any of the previo usl y
pressed keys, t he l owest key to ne is repl aced .
2 ! LOWE R: Lower key pr iority – if the las t pressed key is of lower tone than any of the prev iously
pressed keys, t he hi gh est key t one is rep lac ed .
3 ! NONE: N o priority – if all four tone generators are being used, all Note On commands are
ignored at the MIDI input.
The value can be adjusted in two ways: a) by MIDI controller (Control Changes) Nr. 17 - see chapter 3.1.2. b) by SysEx Message – see chapter 3.3.
2.4. PITCH WHEEL RANGE
Par ameter adjusts ma ximum rang e of the pitc h bend contr olled by the M IDI command ”Pitc h Wheel“ (“Pitch Bend“).
Parameter values are 0 to 24. Value 0 switches the pitch bend off. MIDI command “Pitch Wheel“ is ignored. Values 1 to 24 are equal to transposition semitones, therefore ±2 octave transposition is available.
The value can be adjusted in two ways: a) by MIDI controller (Control Changes) Nr. 18 - see chapter 3.1.2. b) by SysEx Message – see chapter 3.3.

2.5. ARPEGGIO CLOCK RATE
This par ameter adj us ts a rpe ggiato r tempo . Pa rameter v alues a re 0 to 127. V alue of 0 switches instrument’s internal clock generator on. (Arpeggio speed is adjusted by the MG2 - FREQUENC Y knob on the instru ment’s panel or by external c lock impuls es for m the ARPEGGIO TRIG IN connector o n th e rear panel.)
Par ameter v al ues 1 to 12 7 sy n chr onize a rpe ggia tor s p eed ac co rdin g to inc oming “ M I DI C loc k “ data. T he highe r the v alue of the par ameter is s et, the higher ar peggiator speed is pr ovided. V alue 1 represents 127 MIDI ticks between clock pulses, value 2 represents 126 MIDI ticks, etc. The highest value of 127 represents one MIDI tick between clock pulses. For conversion rates see Table 2.
The value can be adjusted in two ways: a) by MIDI controller (Control Changes) Nr. 19 - see chapter 3.1.2. b) by SysEx Message – see chapter 3.3.

3. MIDI IMPLEMENTATION
Interface has only MIDI input - therefore it only receives MIDI commands. Interface r ecognizes
channel co mm a nd s, common system com m a nds a nd System Ex c lusive me ssa ges.
3.1. CHANNEL COMMANDS
Interf ace r eceive s M IDI c ommands on sel ected M IDI chan nel (par ameter "MID I Chan nel"). In
OMNI mode, interface receives data on all 16 MIDI channels simultaneously.
3.1 .1. NOTE ON/OFF
Interface receives Note On/Off on selected MIDI channel. “Key Shift“ parameter defines assign ment of M ID I n otes to in str ument’ s key s . When f ou r va lid MID I no tes are re ceiv ed (a ll f our ton e generators are sounding), all following received MIDI Note commands are processed according to „Key Priority“ parameter setting.
3.1.2. CONTROL CHANGES
Interface recognizes standard MIDI controllers Nr. 64, 120, 121, 123. Other controllers are used for adjusting temporary settings of internal parameters (controllers 16 to 19). All acceptable controllers are received on MIDI channel chosen by “MIDI Channel“ parameter.

CC 19 – Arpeggio Cloc k Rate
Received value of the controller (its second databyte) adjusts the “Arpg Clock Rate“
parameter. Value of the parameter is adjusted only temporarily - until next instrument restart.
3.1.3. PITCH WHEEL (PITCH BEND)
“Pitc h Wheel “ (“ P itc h B end“ ) ha s s tandar d f u nc tion – it c hange s t he tun e of pla yed no tes. T h e
minimum / maximum range is adjusted by the „Pitch Wheel Range“ parameter ( ±0 to ±24 semitones).
Since the inter fa ce does not hav e d ire ct a cc ess to c ont rol volta ge ( C V) of ton e g ener ator s, the tone is no t detun ed con tin uous ly but i n se mitone steps . T oge ther with note tun e c hang es t he en v elope generators are triggered.
3.2. COMMON SYSTEM COMMANDS
3.2.1. CLOCK
If “A rp g Clock R ate“ pa rameter is e qual t o 0, MIDI cl ock co mmands are ignor ed. Fo r valu es of “Arpg Clock Rate“ higher than 0, interface receives synchronization impulses of MID I C lock (status byte F8h) for arpeggiator tempo (see chapter 2.5.).

Maximum arpeggiator tempo is limited by the instrument’s hardware. W hen extremely high speeds of M IDI Cloc k and song temp o are used, th e arpeggiator can play ou t of the tempo or omit several notes.
3.2.2. RESET
Complete interface reset is done after receiving “Reset“ command (status byte FFh) – all parameters are set to their default values stored in internal memory.
3.3. SYSTEM E XCLUSIVE MESSAGES
System Exclusive communication enables the user to adjust values of all interface parameters. System Exclusive Message st r ucture i s always as follows:
F0h Start SysEx 00h 20h 21h Manufacturer ID ii Device ID 57h Model ID aa Address dd…dd Data xx Checksum F7h End SysEx
The description of values is as follows: ii : Identification number of the interface – same as the ac tual number of th e MID I channel (0 0h t o 0F h)
or universal ID (7Fh).
aa : Parameter number. Allowed address range is 00h to 05h :
00h = MIDI Channel – receiving MIDI channel 01h = Ke y S hift – keybo ard tr anspo se 02h = Ke y P r i o rity – key priority parameter 03h = Pi tch W h ee l Range – Pitch bend range 04h = Arpeggi o Clock Rate – clock so urce sel ect io n for th e arp egg iat or 05h = All – change of all pa rameters in int ern al m e m ory For addresses aa = 00h to 04h, value of one parameter is changed only temporar ily – new value is valid until next change is done or the instrument is turned off. For ad dress aa = 05h, values of all parameter s are c hanged permanently , new values are stored in internal memory.
dd…dd : New value of the parameter(s)
For addresses aa = 00h to 04h, datablock includes only one byte with value of parameter. For address aa = 05h , datablock includes bl ock of f ive bytes with values of all parameter s (in order: MIDI Channel, Key Shi ft, Key Priority, Pi tch Wheel Range, Arpeggio Clock Rate).
xx : Checksu m – seve n- bit sum of the Model I D to Checksum bytes must be equal to z ero. For the dd data-byte:
aa = 00h ! dd = 00h ~ 1 0h, va lue 00h t o 0F h rep res ents M ID I c ha nnel n umber 1 to 16, value 10h
for OMNI
aa = 01h ! dd = 00h ~ 54h, value sets keyboard transposition in semitones +0 to +84 aa = 02h ! dd = 00h ~ 0 3h, va lue 00h s e ts pr ior ity “ La st“ , val ue 0 1h s ets “Higher “, v al ue 02h sets
“Lower“ and value 03h sets no priority “None“ mode
aa = 03h ! dd = 00h ~ 18h, value adjusts maximum pitch bend range ±0 to ±24 semi t one s
