FUELS
Pleasepaycarefulattentiontothe specialpointsmadewitheachtypeof fuelastheywillhelpyoutogetthe bestfromyourstove.Itmustbe rememberedthatonlysmokelessfuels maybeburntinsmokecontrolareas onthisstove.Ifyouarenotsure whetheryouareinasmokecontrol area,thenpleasecheckwithyour LocalAuthority.
SmokelessFuels
Therecommendedsmokelessfuels whicharesuitableforuseinsmoke controlareasonthisstoveareas follows:
Ancit,(PhurnacitePlus) AnthraciteLargeNuts, Homefire, Maxibrite, Phurnacite, SunbriteDoubles, WelshDrySteamCoal(LargeNuts).
Coal
reducedoutputs.Thewoodshouldbe cutandsplitandthenlefttoseasonin awellventilateddryplaceforatleast oneyearbutpreferablytwoyears beforeuse.
Peat
Ensurethatthepeatiswelldried beforeuse.Burningwetpeatwillgive risetoheavytardepositsandreduced outputs.
PETROLEUMCOKEISNOT
SUITABLEFORUSEONTHIS
APPLIANCE.ITSUSEWILL
INVALIDATETHEGUARANTEE.
Atfirstyoumayfindithelpfultotry severalfuelstofindthemostsuitable. Ifyouareunabletoobtainthefuel youwantaskyoursupplier,oran approvedfueldistributortosuggestan alternative.
DOOROPERATION
Usethedooropeningandashpantool toopenandclosethedoors.Turnthe right-handdoorknobanti-clockwise toopenandclockwisetoclose(see Fig.1)
MULTIFUELGRATE
YourCharnwoodstoveisfittedwitha multifuelgratewhichenablesboth solidfuelsandwoodtobeburned equallyeffectively.Thegratehastwo positions:-
1)Inthesolidfuelpositionthegrate barsareverticalwithgapsinbetween allowingtheprimarycombustionair tocomeupthroughthegrateand throughthefuelbed.
2)Inthewoodpositionthegratebars arehorizontal,allowingthe combustionairtocomeroundthe sidesofthegrateandoverthetopof it.Wheninthewoodpositionashis abletobuilduponthegrateasis necessaryforeffectivewoodorpeat burning.
Movementofthegratefromone positiontotheotheriseffectedusing thetoolsuppliedasshowninFig.2. Thegrateisputintothesolidfuel positionbymovingthetoolupuntil thehandleisinthe1o'clockposition. Thegrateisputintothewoodposition bymovingthetooldownuntilthe handleisinthe5o'clockposition.To riddletheappliancewhenburning solidfuelsthetoolshouldbemoved betweenthe1o'clockand3o'clock positionsseveraltimes.Whenburning woodorpeattheashshouldbe allowedtobuildupandriddling shouldonlybecarriedoutonceor twiceaweek.
LIGHTING
Thestovemaybelitusingdry kindlingwoodandpaperorfire lighters.Setthegrateintoeitherthe woodpositionorthesolidfuel positionasrequired.Placethepaper,
Housecoaldoubles,treblesorcobbles mayallbeburnt.Donotusesingles, smallnuts,orcoaldust
Itisimportantthatlargesizecoalis used(ie.largerthan2inchor50mm insize).Thecoalshouldbedry.
Whenburningcoalalittleextracareis needed.Pleasetakenoteof thesection "SpecialPointsForBurningCoal".
Wood
Onlydrywellseasonedwoodshould beburntonthisapplianceasburning wetunseasonedwoodwillgiveriseto heavytardepositsinthestove,onthe glassandwithinthechimney.Forthe samereasonhardwoodisbetterthan softwood.Burningwetunseasoned woodwillalsoresultinconsiderably

orfirelighters,andkindlingonthe grateandcoverwithapproximately2 inchesoffuel.Turnthecontrolknob tomaximum,andopentheairwash controlfully(seeFig.1).Lightthe paperorfirelighters.Closethedoors untilthefueliswellignitedthenload withfuelandadjusttheaircontrolsto therequiredsetting.
Oninitiallighting,thestovemay smokeandgiveoffanodourasthe siliconpaintwithwhichthefireboxis paintedreactstotheheat.Thisis normalandwillceaseafterashort time,butmeanwhiletheroomshould bekeptwellventilated.
Whenrelightingthestove,riddle(if burningsolidfuel),removeany clinkerfromthefirebedandthen emptytheashpan.
CONTROLLINGTHE
FIRE
Therateofburningandhencethe outputiscontrolledbythecontrol knobonthesideofthefireandthe airwashcontrol(seeFig.1).
Thecontrolknobislinkedtoa thermostatwhichsensestheboiler temperature.Thenumberatthefront oftheknobisthenumberatwhichit isset.
Theairwashcontrolshouldbekeptat leastslightlyopenmostofthetimeto keeptheglassclean.Itmaybefully openedwhenrapidheatingisrequired ortohelpcleananydepositsfromthe glass.Itwillnotbepossibletokeep theglassclean ifthiscontrolisfully closed,particularlyimmediatelyafter refuelling.
RIDDLING
Whenburningsolidfuelsriddling twiceadayisusuallysufficient.When burningwoodorpeat,ashshouldbe allowedtobuildupandgenerally weeklyriddlingwillbesufficient.The fireshouldberiddledwiththedoors shut(seeFig2.)Placethetoolonto theriddlingleverandrotatebetween the1o'clockand3o'clockpositions severaltimes.Toomuchriddlingcan resultinemptyingunburntfuelinto theashpanandshouldthereforebe avoided.Ifanyclinkerformsitshould beremovedfromthefirebed.After riddling,thegrateshouldbeputback intothesolidfuelorwoodpositionas required(thetoolshouldbeinthe1 o'clockpositionforsolidfuelorinthe 5o'clockpositionforwood).
REFUELLING
Keepthefireboxwellfilledbutdonot overfilltopreventfuelfromspilling overthetopofthefrontfirebars.
Careshouldbetakenespeciallywhen burningwoodthatfueldoesnot projectoverthefrontfirebarsor damagetotheglassmaybecaused whenthedoorsareclosed,itcanalso causetheglasstoblackup.
ASHCLEARANCE
Theashpansshouldbeemptied regularlybeforeitbecomestoofull. Neverallowtheashtoaccumulatein theashpanssothatitcomesincontact withtheundersideofthegrateasthis willseriouslydamagethegratebars. Theashpansarehandledusingthetool provided.Careshouldbetakento ensurethatashiscoolbefore emptyingitintoplasticlinersorbins.
Tomakeashremovaleasierthereisa special available.Thismaybepurchasedfrom yoursupplieror,incaseofdifficulty, fromourselves.

eachstagefortheflamestoappear abovethefire.
Afteraperiodofslumberingalways turntheaircontroluptomaximum andwaituntilflamesappearabovethe fuelbedbeforeopeningthedoors.
Burningcoalwillproducemoresoot depositsthanotherfuels,especiallyif thefireisrunatlowlevelsforlong periods.Itisthereforevitaltoclean thethroatplateregularly,weekly cleaningisrecommended.
NeverfullyclosetheAirwashcontrol whenburningcoal.
SPECIALPOINTS
WHENBURNING
WOODANDPEAT
Thegrateshouldbekeptinthewood burningpositionandshouldnotbe riddleduntiltheashbecomessodeep thatitbeginstoblockthe passageof airintothefireboxatthesideofthe grate.Whenthisisthecasedonot removealloftheashusingthe riddlingmechanismbutkeepalayer abouthalfaninchthickasthisenables thewoodtoburnmoreeffectively. Whenburningwoodorpeatusethe airwashcontrolinthesamewayas described(see"CONTROLLING THEFIRE")
OVERNIGHT
BURNING
Forovernightburningthefiredoors mustbeclosed.
Whenburningsolidfueltheashpans shouldbeemptiedandthefireriddled. Ifthefireisverylowthenitmaybe necessarytoaddalittlefuelandturn thethermostatcontroluptomaximum forabriefperioduntilthefire is burningbrightlybeforefillingwith fuel.Whenthenewfuelhasignited, thethermostatcontrolshouldbe turneddowntotherequiredsetting andtheairwashcontrolmovedtoa lowsetting.Ifthecentralheating pumpisoffovernightthenthe thermostatmaybeleftatthesame settingforbothdayandnight operation.Ifthecentralheatingpump isonovernightthensetthethermostat controltogivetherequiredlevelof heating.Someexperimentationwillbe necessarytofindthesettingsmost suitablefortheparticularfuelused andthedrawonthechimney.
Torevivethefire,emptytheashpans, riddle,andopentheaircontrolsto
maximum.Whenthefireisburning wellloadonmorefuelasnecessary andmovetheaircontrolstothe desiredsetting.
Whenburningwooduselargelogs ratherthansmallones.Proceedas above,butdonotriddlethefireeither whenshuttingdownorreviving.
CLEANINGAND MAINTENANCE
Thestoveisfinishedwithahigh temperaturepaintwhichwill withstandthetemperatures encounteredinnormaluse.Thismay becleanedwithadamplint-freecloth whenthestoveiscold.Shouldre­paintingbecomenecessary,high temperaturepaintsareavailablefrom yoursupplierorfromstoveshops.
Theglassinthedoorsisazero expansionceramicglass,capableof withstandingtheheatofthefire. Beforecleaningtheglassopenthe doorsandallowthemtocool.Clean theglassusingadampclothandthen wipingoverwithadrycloth.Any stubborndepositsontheglassmaybe removedwithaproprietarystoveglass cleanerorceramichobcleaner.Some depositsontheglassmaybeburntoff simplybyrunningthefireatafastrate forafewminutes.Donotuseabrasive cleanersorpadsasthesescanscratch thesurfacewhichwillweakenthe glassandcauseprematurefailure.
THROATPLATEAND
FLUEWAYCLEANING
Itisimportantthatthethroatplateand allthestovefluewaysarekeptclean. Whenburningsmokelessfuelsthey shouldbecleanedmonthly.When burningotherfuelstheyshouldbe cleanedatleastonceaweek,andmore frequentlyifnecessary.Itisnot necessarytoletthefireoutcompletely tocarryouttheseoperations.
Thethroatplateisloweredusingthe dooropeningtool.Slidethetoolinto thebracketfromtheside,pullthe throatplateforward,andthenlowerit asshowninFig.3.Anysootydeposits shouldthenbesweptfromtheplate andintothefire.
Whilethethroatplateisloweredclean anysootydepositsfromtheboiler facesandtheairwashtubes.
Returnthethroatplatetoitscorrect position-raisethefrontoftheplate, pushitbackandthenloweritontothe retaininglugs.

CHIMNEYSWEEPING
Thechimneyshouldbesweptatleast twiceayear.Whereatopoutletis useditwillgenerallybepossibleto sweepthechimneythroughthe appliance.
Firstremovethesidefireplates,front firebarsandthethroatplate.Then sweepthechimneyensuringthatsoot isremovedfromallhorizontal surfacesaftersweeping.
Insituationswhereitisnotpossibleto sweepthroughtheappliancethe installerwillhaveprovidedalternative means,suchasasootdoor.After sweepingthechimneytheappliance flueoutletandthefluepipe connectingthestovetothechimney mustbecleanedwithafluebrush.
Afterclearinganysootfromwithin thestove,replacethethroatplate(see Fig.3),thefrontfirebars,andside fireplates.
Differenttypesofsweep'sbrushesare availabletosuitdifferentflueways. Forstandardbrickchimneysawire centresweep'sbrushfittedwitha guidewheelisrecommended.For prefabricatedinsulatedchimneysthe manufacturersinstructionswithregard tosweepingshouldbeconsulted.
TROUBLESHOOTING
FireWillNotBurn.
Checkthat: a)theairinletisnotobstructedinany way, b)chimneysandfluewaysareclear,c) thatasuitablefuelisbeingused,d) thatthereisanadequateairsupply into theroom,

e)thatanextractorfanisnotfittedin thesameroomasthestove. f)thereissufficientdrawinthe chimney,(oncethechimneyiswarma draughtreadingofatleast0.10inches watergaugeshouldbeobtained).
DoorGlassBlacksUp
Keepingtheglasscleanrequiresa certainamountofexperimentationdue tothedifferencesinthedrawof differentchimneys.Thefollowing pointsshouldbenotedandwithalittle careshouldenabletheglasstobekept cleaninmostsituations:
a)Theairwashreliesonasupplyof heatedairtokeeptheglassclean, therefore,whenlightingthestove allowthefirebedtobecomewell establishedbeforeclosingtheair controls.Thismayalsobenecessary whenre-fuellingthestove.
b)Whenre-fuellingkeepthefuelas farbackfromthefrontfirebarsas possible,donottrytofittoomuch fuelintothefirebox.
c)Nevercompletelyclosetheairwash control-asaguideitshouldbeat leastaquarteropen.
d)Wetwoodorlogsoverhangingthe frontfirebarswillcausetheglassto blacken.
Itisalwaysmoredifficulttokeepthe glasscleanwhenrunningthestove veryslowlyforlongperiods.
Ifblackeningoftheglassstilloccurs checkthatallflueconnectionsandthe blankingplatearewellsealed.Itis alsoimportantthatthechimneydraw issufficient,(whenthechimneyis warmadraughtreadingofatleast
2.54mm,or0.10inches,watergauge shouldbeobtained),andthatitisnot affectedbydown-draught.
Whenburningcoalsomeblackening oftheglassmayoccurbelowthelevel ofthefrontfirebars.Thiswillnot obscuretheviewofthefireoraffect itsperformance.
FumeEmission.
WarningNote:Properlyinstalled andoperatedthisappliancewillnot emitfumes.Occasionalfumefrom de-ashingandre-fuellingmayoccur. Persistentfumeemissionis potentiallydangerousandmustnot betolerated.Iffumeemissiondoes persist,thenthefollowing immediateactionsshouldbetaken:
