Notes on condensation

If the DA-I is brought directly from a cold to a warm location. or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the drum and head components inside the unit. Should this occur, the unit will not operate, and the following message will appear on the built-in display:

If this message appears, wait 1 to 2 hours before attempting to use the unit again. Also, it sometimes takes a few minutes for condensation to build up to the point that the "Dew Stop" message appears. Because of this, it's best to wait a few minutes after bringing the unit into a warm location from a cold one to make sure that the "Dew Stop" message doesn't appear.

8. SERVO SYSTEM

Controls for tape speed, cylinder rotary frequency and tracking are very important since recording pattern for DAT employs High-density recording system (114 MBPI2) in which the track-pitch is 13.591µm.

Especially, the tracking is controlled by a servo system called ATF (Automatic Tracking Finding). The servo system is PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) which is controlled by digital signals.

CPU B HD62014

Page 37

Page 38

1. Play-back signal is input to sync. filter and pilot filter via head Amp.

Sync. filter detects signals f2 and f3 and, output them to CPU B as signal PBS. Pilot filter detects signal f1, and output it to CPU B as signal PBS.

2. The pilot filter output is detected and is provided to ATF S/H circuit.

3. Crossing f1 signals are sampled and their voltage levels are compared by the ATF S/H circuit.

Capstan and reel servo circuit controls the rotation frequency of the capstan motor so that the head traces the tracks correctly.

Page 39
8-2. Cylinder Servo

CYL — FG — Cylinder motor consists of a pulse generator whose frequency varies in accordance with the motor rotation. When the cylinder rotation is normal speed (2,000rpm), the motor provides 800 Hz signal CYL to CPU B.

CYG — PG — Change-over signal for cylinder heads A and B

  • CYFE Control signal for cylinder rotation frequency (PWM output)
  • CYP Control signal for cylinder phase (PWM output)
Page 40

8-3. Capstan Servo

CAC — FG — Provided from a pulse generator in the motor, signal CAC transmits the rotation speed of capstan motor to CPU B.

When the capstan motor rotates in normal speed, the signal carries 466.7Hz pulse.

2.14 mS (466.7 Hz)

  • CAP Control signal for capstan phase (PWM output)
  • CAF Control signal for capstan rotation frequency (PWM output)
  • RLC Control signal for reel (PWM output)
  • ATF Control signal for tracking at play-back (PWM output)
Page 41

8-4. Motor Control

Motor speed is determined by the voltage of drive signal which is generated by means of filtering the signal CONT.

Drive voltage Motor frequency
Large Fast
Small Slow

In accordance with the duty of pulse CONT, the driving voltage of motor is determined.

Page 42

9. D/A • A/D CONVERTER BLOCK

a. D/A Converter

Output signal from D/A converter is multiplex signal of L-ch and R-ch.

S/H (Sample and Hold) circuit separates L-ch and R-ch signals.

LPFs of Line-out cut unnecessary frequency and smoothes stepped waveform ( _-----------------------------------

b. A/D Converter

A/D converter is constructed by D/A converter and comparator.

SH Output -

e.g. 4-bit A/D Converter

  • (1) Comparator compares analog input signal with digital output signal(1000) of D/A Converter.
  • (2) When the analog signal is bigger than the digital signal(1000), CPUs output digital signal(1100) and, again, the comparator compares them.
  • (3) As the same manner when the input is bigger than output, CPUs output signal(1110). Also when the input is smaller than output, CPUs output signal(1010).
  • (4) The comparator compares the analog and the digital signals until both signals, value become the same.

Thus, an analog signal is converted into a digital signal.

  • (2) Using a signal generator or test tape TY-7551 (PRG. No. 7 and 9), record 1 kHz sinewave signal from L-ch so that REC level meter reading becomes 0 dB.
  • (3) Adjust VR 8 (R-ch) so that noise width on the right side (least side bits) at 1 V level becomes narrowest.

(4) As the same manner, record the signal from R-ch.

Page 45

(5) Adjust VR9 (L-ch) by the same method as procedure (3).

10-3. Linearity

[Checkpoints]

Oscilloscope channel 1 (Voltage 20mV/div.) — Pre-Amp. IC (HA11851MP) pin 17 (Testpoint DATA) Oscilloscope channel 3 (Voltage 0.1V/div.) — Testpoint PG for trigger

Time — A mode (2mS/div.), B mode (1mS/div.)

[Adjusting method]

  • (1) Clean each pole and cylindrical head drum with cotton bar and special liquid Daiflon Solvent.
  • (2) Connect a slide VR(2Kohm) between testpoints VDD and OFS (Refer to page 8)

(3) Insert adjustment tape TY7251 and set the unit in PLAY mode.

Page 46

  • (4) Observing DATA signal's envelope with an oscilloscope, short the SW and set the slide VR (2Kohm) position so that the envelope signal can be observed the most slowest.
  • (5) a. Best waveform

b. Poor waveform

Turn the guide roller of supply side to clockwise or unclockwise by fork driver (Refer to page 91), so that the envelope can be observed like waveform a.

Turn the guide roller of take-up side as the same manner as the above.

No good (Poor adjustment for both gide rollers)

Turn one side guide roller (Supply of Take-up side) to clockwise or unclockwise to obtain waveform (1) or (2).

Then turn another side guide roller as the same manner as the above.

Page 47

Caution :

At the adjustment, be sure to move the two guide rollers within ±90° and paint the original position with a marker. Also make sure to check the tape running as follows.

② Be sure to punch at the hole as show below.

③ If the tape is out of the position, the following DATA envelopes are observed.

Out Range

A/C = Less than 3 dB
Page 48

  • (6) Tighten screws which affix the guide rollers with 1 kg/cm torque.
  • (7) Eject and re-load the test tape and confirm that shape of the DATA envelope is square. If the envelope is not proper, repeat the above procedures from (5),
  • (8) Make sure there is no curling or wrinkles on the tape around the guide rollers.
10-4. Cylinder and Clock Pulse Synchronism

At play mode, using the test tape TY7551, adjust PG phase adjustment VR (VR10).

[Chekpoints]

Oscilloscope Channel 1 — Pre-Amp. IC (HA11851MP) pin 17(Testpoint DATA) for basic Oscilloscope Channel 2 — HD62014 pin 34 (Testpoint PIWD) or Base of transistor T14 for adjusted phase External Trigger — HD62014 pin 16 (CYG) or Testpoint PG

[Adjusting Method]

  • (1) Turning of VR10 moves signal PIWD right or left.
  • (2) Adjust VR10 so that the rising edge of signal PIWD stops at the point that 130 KHz pilot signal starts.
Page 49

Page 50

10-5. Error Rate

This adjustment minimizes the occurance of error by adjusting the lock frequency of the PLL (Phase Locked Loope) and Equalizer Circuit.

[Checkpoints]

Oscilloscope Channel 1 — Testpoint F1ER (pin 90 of HD62004) Oscilloscope Channel 2 — Testpoint DATA Oscilloscope's External Trigger — Testpoint PG Also connect a frequency counter on Testpoint F1ER

[Adjusting Method]

  • (1) Play 1 KHz, 0 dB sine wave, L+R of track No's 22, 24 36 of test tape TY-7551.
  • (2) Adjust VR6 and VR4 so that the frequency counter's reading is 50 Hz or 3,000 pulses per minute.
  • (3) Observing the oscilloscope screen make sure that no C2 Error occurs at muted area on the tape.

The DA-1 is faulty when C2 Error occurs at muting areas on the tape.

One pulse appears on F1ER terminal per one error

Note; If the test tape is poor C2 error occurs frequently. Therefore make sure the condition before the adjustment.

10-6. Search

[Checkpoints]

Oscilloscope Channel 1 — Testpoint WOST (pin 90 of HD62004) on PCB MA1M Oscilloscope's External Trigger — Testpoint PG Also connect a frequency counter on testpoint WOST.

[Adjusting Method]

(1) Performing FF and REW on a full recorded tape DT-46 (any music or sound is OK), adjust VR5 so that oscilloscope shows as much pulses as possible.

(2) After the adjustment, confirm that the frequency counter's reading is more than 220,000 pulses during full FF or REW.

Page 51
10-7. 10 Times Speed

  • (1) Connect a frequency counter on testpoint CAP CAC.
  • (2) Perform FF and REW 10 times with a full recorded tape DT-46 (any music or sound is OK but ABS function must be functionable) around middle part of the tape (ABS time: 23 min.). Then adjust VR12 so that the frequency counter's reading is 700 ~ 1,100 Hz.

10-8. REC Level

[Checkpoints]

Oscilloscope Channel 1 — Testpoint PBO (CN3 pin 10) Oscilloscope's External Trigger — Testpoint PG

[Adjusting Method]

  • (1) Adjust VR7 so that the voltmeter shows 2.24 V at pin 39 of HA12109 tentatively when blank tape is recorded.
  • (2) Playback test tape TY-7551.
  • (3) Observe waveforms of the followings and check the voltage levels f4 of A and B heads.

  • (4) Set test tape DC-711Q and record no sound for about 2 min. (Be sure to use non recorded section of the tape)
  • (5) Adjust VR7 so that the recorded signals f4 of the two test tapes are the same level.

10-9. Over Write

Make sure if a new sound is added on a recorded tape

10-10. Title Change

Make sure if characters recorded in the sub-code area can be correctly modified or changed.

Page 52

11. OPERATION

Sub-codes

Sub-code registration

In addition to recording "sounds" such as music on DAT cassette tapes, you can also register what are known as "sub-codes." These sub-codes aid the DA-1 in identifying various points on the tape, for speedy program search, skip play, etc. Sub-codes can be registered totally independently of the sound you record on the tape, so you can rewrite these sub-codes freely — even changing them or adding them after the "recording" process is complete, without any effect on the sound.

DA-1 sub-codes

ABS (absolute time)

Indicates the time elapsed from the beginning of the tape.

Program time

Indicates the time elapsed for each selection.

Start ID

Indicates the beginning of a selection.

Program number

Indicates the sequential number of the selection. All selections should be in proper order on the tape.

Display characters

Identification messages can be created, using up to 28 alphanumeric characters.

These are displayed during recording or playback of the selection.

Skip ID

Marks selection to be "skipped over." When a skip ID is reached, play automatically skips to the beginning of the next selection.

In most cases, sub-codes are either registered automatically during recording, or input manually (in some cases, both are possible) as shown below.

Registration
Sub-code
Automatic
(during recording)
Manual
(after recording)
ABS time 0 -
Program time 0 ∆ (see page 36)
Start ID 0 0
Program number 0 △ (renumbering)
Character 0
Skip ID 0

• When inputting manual sub-codes, be sure to close the tape erase protect tab.

Page 53

Hints on Sub-code Use

When temporarily stopping during recording (pause), don't immediately press the STOP key, but instead try using the REC MUTE or first lower the REC VOLUME to create a blank space. Next time you record beginning at this blank space, a sub-code will automatically be read at this point. Be sure to begin recording when the ABS time is displayed. If you do this, sub-codes will be registered in order from the beginning of the tape to the end.

Track Format

DAT cassette tape tracks are laid out as shown in the following figure.

When blank spaces are not inserted...

Page 54

Changing the Time Counter

The time counter actually features 5 different functions, which can be selected with the TIME function key.

ABS (Absolute time)

Displays elapsed time from beginning of tape

PRG (Program time)

Displays elapsed time from beginning of selection

REM (Remaining time)

Displays remaining time on tape

Chr (Character)

When character display is ON, user-programmable characters are displayed with each selection.

Cnt (Counter)

Displays counter numbers in relation to tape revolutions.

When the TIME function key is pressed, display changes as shown below.

ABS (Absolute time)

(display modes: stop, play, pause, recording, fast-forward, rewind)

Press the TIME function key to select ABS.

In this case, the display shows that 2 minutes and 35 seconds have elapsed since the beginning of the tape.

  • Time counter is initialized at ABS display when DA-1 power is turned ON.
  • ABS indicates total elapsed time from the beginning of the tape. When using a new tape, be sure to rewind it all the way to the beginning before recording. If the tape is not rewound, ABS will not be registered.
Page 55
PRC (Program time)

(display modes: stop. play, pause, recording, fast-forward, rewind)

Press the TIME function key to select PRG.

This indicates that 1 minute and 20 seconds have elapsed in the presently selected program (selection).

• In some cases, if start ID is registered or erased after recording, PRG time display may be inaccurate. The DA-1 measures elapsed time from the beginning of each selection, and not from program time — which is registered on the tape when you begin recording. In some cases, if you use Cue/Review, FF or rewind functions during the middle of a selection, or begin playback mid-way through a selection, the program time which was programmed before start ID alteration will be displayed

REM (Remaining (display modes: stop. play. pause. recording) time)

Press the TIME function key to select REM. In this case, the display shows that 1 hour and 53 minutes remain on the tape.

Display appears approximately 20 or 30 seconds after beginning of playback/recording, as time is required for calculation. During calculation time, a flashing "-" mark appears in the display.

2. FUNCTION OF EACH MECHANISM

The DAT mechanism is designed for portable type and, is composed of Tape Loading mechanism, Tape Transport Poles, Reel Driving mechanism, Cassette Holder mechanism. The followings are functions of each block.

2-1. Tape Loading

Extracting the tape from the cassette, wrapping it about the cylindrical head drumat a precisely defined angle, are performed by one DC motor. Control of the motor is done by Mode Sensor Switch.

2-2. Tape Transport

The mechanism is made up with nine poles, cylindrical head drum, and capstan as shown below.

The tape is guided by those poles and transported by the rotation of capstan.

2-3. Reel Driving

Rotation of capstan motor is transmitted to the reels via a belt. A DC motor moves the Idler Gear to Tape-up or Supply reels to transmit the rotation in accordance with reversing or forwarding of tape. Mode Sensor Switch controls the DC motor and the position of Idler Gear.

2-4. Cassette Holder

Cassette Holder mechanism consists of holder and lifter block. Holder block opens and closes the slider of the cassette. Using a damper, the lifter block ejects cassette smoothly.
