AIR CONDITIONER OPERATION MODE
Your Carrier Duct Free air conditioner operates in four modes:
The air conditioner cools, dries, and filters the room air
The air conditioner filters and circulates the room air, without changing the room air temperature
The air conditioner heats and filters the room air (if so equipped).
The air conditioner dries and filters the room air, while slightly cooling the room air temperature. (NOTE: Dehumidification does not take the place of a dehumidifier).
In addition, the air conditioner can operate automatically:
The air conditioner heats or cools the room according to the temperature you select:
If the room air is cooler than the desired temperature, the air conditioner operates in HEATING mode—(if so equipped).
If the room air is warmer than the desired temperature, the air conditioner operates in COOLING mode.
The remote controller transmits operation commands to the air conditioner. You can use the remote controller to perform the following functions:
• Turns the air conditioner ON and OFF.
• Selects the operation mode (Cooling, Fan, Heating, Dehumidification, or Auto).
• Adjusts the room air temperature and the fan speed.
• Sets air conditioner operation timer periods.
• Sets additional air conditioner adjustments and operating features.
The remote controller mounting rack can be used to secure the remote controller to a surface. When the remote controller is in its mounting rack, make sure that there is a clear line of sight between the remote controller and the air conditioner.
THE REMOTE CONTROLLER
The remote controller contains various buttons to operate the air conditioner, and a window display in which the current operation status is shown.
Each time you press a button on the remote controller you can observe the result on the display (Don’t worry about making a mistake, anything you do can easily be changed.)
REMOTE CONTROLLER OPERATION
NOTE: To operate the air conditioner with the remote control-
ler; set the operation switch to REMOTE (See Page 9).
• The remote controller may be used at a distance of up to 23 ft from the air conditioner display panel (without obstructions).

If no transmission is made within 10 seconds, the remote controller reverts to its previous state.
The remote controller and the air conditioner constantly "exchange" information regarding adjustments and the room air temperature.
To ensure proper system operation, avoid block-

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
When the filter lamp on the display panel is lit remove the filter and clean.
TO REMOVE AIR FILTERS:
1. Open fan coil unit front panel (lift).
2. Pull the filters down to remove.
TO CLEAN OR REPLACE FILTERS
Filters should be vacuumed and washed with warm water. Shake filter to remove any excess water, dry thoroughly, and replace by sliding filter behind front grill until filter snaps
in place.
If filter has begun to break down or is torn, it needs to be replaced. Replacement filters are available through your Carrier distributor.
• Move the Operation Switch on the display panel to the OFF position to cancel the FILTER lamp.
• Return the switch to the REMOTE position to operate the air conditioner with the remote controller.
• When the filter lamp on the display panel is lit remove the filters to clean.
TO CLEAN INDOOR UNIT FRONT PANEL
If the front panel of the unit becomes dirty or smudged, wipe the outside of the front panel with a soft dry cloth. If necessary, use
CAUTION
To avoid the possibility of electric shock, before performing any cleaning and maintenance operations, always turn off power to the system by pressing the ON/ OFF button on the remote controller. Turn off the outdoor disconnect switch located near the outdoor unit. If the indoor unit is on a separate switch, be sure it is also disconnected.
!
CAUTION
Operating your system with dirty air lters may damage the indoor unit and can also cause reduced cooling performance, intermittent system operation, frost build up on the indoor coil, and blown fuses. Inspect and clean or replace the air lters monthly.

TO CLEAN INDOOR COIL
To clean the coil, remove indoor unit front panel, and vacuum the coil fins. Use care not to bend or damage fins.
TO CLEAN OUTDOOR COIL (OUTDOOR UNIT)
1. Remove any dirt or obstruction from discharge opening.
2. Use a garden hose to spray water on coil. Debris that collects between coil fins inhibits heat transfer – direct the water spray between the coil fins and flush out debris.
CLEANING CONDENSATE DRAINS
Clean all drains at the start of each cooling season. Check the flow by pouring water into the drain.
Do’s and Don’ts For Proper Air Conditioner Operation
Do’s
• Make sure that the air conditioner is connected directly to the electrical supply.
• Replace both the remote controller batteries when the Low Battery symbol appears.
• Point the remote controller toward the air conditioner display panel when transmitting a command.
• Place the remote controller in a location from which there is a clear line of sight to the display panel.
• Select a moderate temperature setting. Extreme temperature settings waste electricity.
• Keep doors and windows closed.
• Close air vents in unoccupied rooms to save electricity.
• If a problem arises which you cannot solve, call an authorized service representative.
• Please read this manual carefully.
Don’ts
• Do not perform cleaning or maintenance activities with the air conditioner on.
• Do not expose the remote controller to direct sunlight or heat.
• Do not expose the display panel to direct sunlight, or other sources of strong lighting, as this may interfere with the reception with of commands from the remote controller.
• Do not block air intakes and outlets on the indoor and outdoor units.
TECHNICIAN/CUSTOMER
The remote controller contains seven DIP switches, located in the battery compartment, two of which (Sw. No.3 & Sw. No. 4) control special system characteristics. The DIP switches default positions are set according to the model air conditioner installed, as per the following table.
Model 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
40GC, 40GS, 40BD, 40BE ON OFF OFF OFF OFF ON OFF
Switch No. 3 should be set as follows:
OFF (default) – when only one air conditioner is installed in the room.
ON – when there are two air conditioners with remote controllers installed in the room, in one of the remote controllers this switch must be in the ON position. To activate the new switch setting, simultaneously press the MENU SELECT and ROOM buttons.
Switch No. 4 should be set as follows:
OFF – displays temperature in °C with a 24-hour clock format
ON – displays temperature in °F, with a 12-hour clock (PM indicator) format.
To operate the special systems characteristics:
1. Remove the batteries
2. Set the DIP switches to the required positions.
3. Wait approximately 2 minutes and return batteries to proper position.
The following drawing illustrates the default DIP switch positions.
CAUTION
When cleaning the front panel, NEVER use water hotter than 105°F and DO NOT pour water onto the fan coil unit. Do not use abrasive or petroleumbased cleaners damage to unit appearance will result.
WARNING
Some metal parts and sharp ns of outdoor unit coil can cause personal injury during cleaning. Clean coil carefully.
