Painting Nonmetallic Conduit and Fittings for Aesthetic
Purposes Only
Paint Selection --
What IS Recommended - Water based or latex coatings
Performance of water based coatings, especially latex paints, excel over others when applied to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They assist in the preservation of the physical properties of the nonmetallic conduit and fittings. For optimal results, follow recommendations on packaging or by paint supplier for application techniques. It is advisable to test paint on a small concealed area for appearance and adhesion before painting the entire raceway.
What IS NOT Recommended - Solvent based coatings
Solvent based coatings, which contain aromatic hydrocarbons, may diminish the physical properties of a PVC raceway.
PVC Raceway Preparation --
Cleanliness
Any contaminants such as dust, oil, grease, silicones, or other lubricants must be removed from the raceway. It is recommended that all surfaces be cleaned with soap and water, or degreasers such as ethanol or methanol before paint application.
Primer
Although PVC can be painted without priming, a primer in conjunction with latex paint often produces better results.
Static Charge:
Often times static charge creates a problem with dust attraction. If this occurs than it is suggested that a paint supplier be contacted for an anti-static dipping agent.
Number of Coats
For optimum results, use a brush to apply the first coat. Then, spray or roll on the second coat for complete coverage.
Painting Safety --
Paint in a well ventilated area or with an appropriate safety breathing apparatus.
