Introduction
hanks for purchasing the MusicWorks simple source audio control center. The combination of MusicWorks
T
and a Cambridge SoundWorks powered loudspeaker system creates a system which is compact, simple to operate, with outstanding music reproduction capability.
MusicWorks’ compact size and simple operation make it easy to fit high quality sound in places where even a shelf system is too large. It’s perfect for dens, offices, kitchens, bedrooms, and dorm rooms. Cambridge SoundWorks’ powered
2.1 speaker systems dramatically outperform the conventional speakers supplied with shelf systems, yet their subwoofer/satellite format allows extremely flexible placement options.
MusicWorks is also a perfect addition to a home or office PC. By connecting your computer sound card’s output to the MusicWorks Computer Mix input, you can use the same powered speakers for your computer sound while listening to the radio or a CD.
Please take the time to follow this simple User Manual carefully. It will help you set up and operate your MusicWorks properly and help you enjoy all of its features. Save this User Manual for future reference.
In the event of difficulty, first contact the retailer where you purchased your unit. If they are unable to resolve your problem, contact Cambridge SoundWorks directly:

Placement Connections
The compact size of MusicWorks lets you place it wherever operation is convenient. Powered speakers used with MusicWorks may be placed wherever appropriate for optimal sound quality, whether alongside
MusicWorks or across the room. MusicWorks is supplied with a 2-
meter shielded cable for connection to Cambridge SoundWorks powered loudspeaker systems. If a longer cable is needed, a standard shielded cable of the appropriate length may be substituted. Refer to the manual supplied with your speaker system for placement recommendations.
Notes About Placement:
1. Allow clearance for the full height of the opened CD lid.
2. Metal shelving or cabinets may affect radio reception.
3. Computers and monitors may affect radio reception. Keep MusicWorks at least a foot from a video monitor or PC chassis.
4. Avoid placing MusicWorks next to high-moisture sites (kitchen sinks or wash basins).

FM Antenna Options
The wire antenna supplied with MusicWorks will be sufficient for reception of local stations in most areas with high signal strength. If you are in a difficult reception area, such as a rural area far away from the transmitters, or an urban area surrounded by tall buildings, you may need to connect to an outdoor antenna system or to cable TV line. MusicWorks has an “F”-style connector jack. Use it to connect an FM antenna. (Contact your cable company to see if they include the FM band; some cable operators purposely block FM to reduce TV interference.) Refer to the diagram on the previous page.
AM Antenna
MusicWorks has an efficient internal AM antenna. No outside antenna is needed.
Main Ouput
Connect MusicWorks’ MAIN OUTPUT to the input of the powered speakers. The signal at this output is a mix of the primary listening source (as adjusted by MusicWorks controls), and the signal fed to the COMPUTER MIX input (without alteration).
A miniplug inserted into the front panel headphone jack automatically turns off the main output.
Note: It is not necessary to use the in-line volume control cable included with some Cambridge SoundWorks speaker systems. The cable included with the MusicWorks may be substituted.
Auxiliary Input
MusicWorks features a selectable AUX input (two RCA-type jacks; one for the right channel, one for the left channel). Use this input to listen to external audio sources through your MusicWorks, such as a cassette tape, MiniDisc, DAT player or TV sound.
Refer to the diagram on the
previous page.
Record Output
MusicWorks features a fixed-level output for tape recording (two RCAtype jacks; one for the right channel, one for the left channel). A signal from the selected source is automatically sent to these jacks. The REC output signal is not affected by volume and tone adjustments. The signal from the Computer Mix input is not available for recording.
Computer Mix Input
MusicWorks features a constant-level mixing input (a 3.5 mm stereo minijack). Connecting a personal computer (or other audio source) to this input lets you mix its alert signals or output with MusicWorks’ selected audio source. The COMPUTER MIX input lets MusicWorks operate as a convenient CD player/ radio in an office setting, while also reproducing the office computer’s sound.
Since the Computer Mix input is not affected by MusicWorks’ volume or tone settings, the external audio source should have an output level control, so you can balance its output with the selected audio source. You cannot record from the COMPUTER MIX input.

Operation
Clock
Power/Standby
The Power switch in the lower righthand corner toggles between ON and STANDBY mode. When in STANDBY, the unit uses very little energy. The only circuits left operating are the clock and the remote control.
T one
MusicWorks is equipped with four different tone settings. These settings affect the selected listening source but not the signal from the COMPUTER MIX input.
Setting Effect
FLAT No alteration
to signal.
ROCK Maximum bass
and treble boost.
JAZZ Moderate bass
and treble boost.
CLASSIC Moderate bass
boost only.
Tone settings can not be changed from the remote control.
Adjusting Volume
Use the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons in the center of the unit to set volume level. You can view the relative level setting on the VOLUME LEVEL LEDs near the bottom center of the front panel. Volume may also be adjusted from the remote control, using the MASTER VOLUME rocker switch.
Selecting Sources
Use the four SOURCE SELECTOR buttons on the left of the display to select the primary source. Signals at the COMPUTER MIX input are always active and mixed with the primary listening source. The MusicWorks’ level and equalization circuitry does not affect the COMPUTER MIX signal.
Setting
Note: The unit must either be in STANDBY or switched ON and the AUX input function selected to change the clock time.
1. Press the MEMORY button once to enter the clock setting mode. The hour digits on the display will flash. Use the CD SKIP (>>|) or SEARCH (|<<) buttons to adjust the hours up or down.
2. Press the MEMORY button again. The minute digits will flash. Use the CD SKIP and SEARCH buttons to set the minutes.
3. Press the MEMORY button to end the clock setting mode.
Note: If there is no adjustment
performed for 10 seconds, the unit will automatically exit the clock setting mode, retaining whatever changes have been made.
Viewing
The time will always be displayed when in AUX mode or in STANDBY.
Pressing the MODE/REMAIN button once while in Radio, CD stop or remaining time mode will display the current time for 5-seconds.
Pressing the MODE/REMAIN button twice in CD elapsed time mode will also display the current time for 5-seconds.

Cleaning And Maintenance
MusicWorks does not require any periodic maintenance or adjustment, provided it is operated as recommended. Keep the CD lid closed when not in use to prevent dust from settling on the CD mechanism and lens. If it becomes necessary to clean your MusicWorks, be sure to follow these precautions:
1. Unplug MusicWorks before cleaning.
2. Never touch the compact disc player lens. Should the lens require cleaning, use a camera lens blower brush or a compressed air can. If the lens cannot be cleaned this way, refer the unit to a qualified service person.
3. Do not immerse MusicWorks in water.
4. MusicWorks can be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with water. Do not use solvents, chemicals or solutions containing abrasives, alcohol, or ammonia. Do not spray water directly on the unit. Lightly spray the cloth damp, wipe the unit clean, and let it dry.
5. If liquids should spill into MusicWorks, immediately unplug the unit and have it checked by a qualified service person before next use.
6. If necessary, you may use a soft brush vacuum attachment to clean the surfaces.
