The information shown here varies depending upon
which system you choose to display. You can change
the information using the Vehicle Information menu.
See “Driver Information Center (DIC)” in the Index
of your CTS owner’s manual for more information.
Banner
The Banner is where you will find the title for each
screen or menu. There are some screens that do not
have titles, but most do. If the BAND or radio screen
is active, you will also see the currently active band.
For example, if you see Radio FM1, it means that
the FM1 band is active. The presets for that band
are displayed at the right of the screen. For more
information, see “Multi
this section.
The Banner information cannot be edited or changed.

Radio Station Information
The information shown here tells you which radio
station frequency you are tuned to, such as 100.7,
as shown in the previous example. If there is any
Radio Data Systems (RDS) station identification
information being broadcast, that information will be
shown also. If you are currently scanning radio stations,
Scan will appear on the screen next to the radio station
frequency . See “Finding a Station” in the Index for
more information.
The information to the right of the radio station frequency
and identification is RDS emergency alert and traffic
announcements. You will see Emergency Test whenever
the RDS station you are tuned to conducts a test of the
local emergency broadcast system. If there is a real
emergency, you will see Emergency on the screen and
information will be provided regarding the emergency.
Traffic only appears on the screen when you turn on the
traffic announcements feature. When Traffic appears on
the screen, the system will seek for an RDS station
which supports traffic information. See “Radio Data
Systems (RDS)” in the Index of your CTS owner’s
manual as well as “Radio Screen” in the Index of this
manual for more information.
RDS Message
If the RDS Message feature is on and the RDS station
that the system is tuned to is broadcasting RDS
information, it will be shown here. See “FM Menu” in
the Index for more information.
The content of the information varies depending on the
station, but it may contain the title and artist of the song
currently playing or information on traffic problems,
such as accidents or construction areas. Stations do not
always broadcast messages, so this part of the screen
may be blank at times.

Single CD (Compact Disc) Player
Information
The CD symbol shown indicates that a CD is loaded
in the map CD player located at the top of the screen.
If there is a music note next to the CD symbol, a music
CD is loaded in the player. If a small square resembling
a piece of paper is next to the CD symbol, a CD with
data on it is loaded in the player. See “Playing a
Compact Disc (CD)” in the Index for more information.
CD (Compact Disc) Changer Information
The six horizontal lines shown on the screen represent the
six different slots of the six
the bottom of the screen. If you see a green line, it means
that a CD is loaded in that slot. If the line is yellow, it
means that the CD in that slot is the selected CD. If the
line is gray, it means that no CD is loaded in that slot.
See “Playing a Compact Disc (CD)” in the Index for
more information.

Radio/CD (Compact Disc) Changer
Information
Information about the radio and/or CD changer is shown
here. For example, if you are working in the Setup menu
and the radio is playing, you will see the currently tuned
radio station frequency here as well as the current band
such as FM1 107.9. If you are playing a CD, however,
you will see information about the CD changer such as
Disc 2 Track 5.
This information is displayed in the center, rather than
the lower left, of the screen and in the Banner when the
Radio screen is active.
Equalizer Information
The currently active equalization will be shown here.
You can have up to three customized equalizations.
See “Setting the T one” in the Index for more
information on programming the equalizer.

remaining to your final destination, represented by a
black and white checkered flag. In the example listed
previously, the vehicle is on Torrance Boulevard and
has 45 minutes and 55 234 km remaining until the
final destination is reached.
If you are not on the planned route, an arrow indicating
the general direction of your destination is shown.
The distance remaining to your destination is also
shown. This distance may not be accurate because it is
based upon a “straight

Maps
This section includes basic information that you need to
know about the map database.
Regional and Interstate Maps
The maps are stored on 10 compact discs (CDs). There are
nine regional CDs available for the nine regions in the
United States, and a tenth interstate CD that lists only major
city centers and interstate highways. Canadian residents
will receive two CDs, one regional and one interstate.
The map shown here contains the different regions
and corresponding CD numbers for the United States.
A regional map covers all interstate freeways and most
state highways, county roads, major and general streets.
A regional map may show greater detail in more
populated areas than in less populated areas.
If a regional map does not contain a specific name of a
city, see “Database Coverage Explanations” in the Index
for more information.
T o load a map CD, do the following:
1. Turn the ignition to ON.
2. Choose the CD for the region in which you are
traveling or use the interstate CD.

Traveling on a Planned Route
After a route has been calculated and the route
highlighted, you may hear an audio prompt to proceed
to the highlighted route. When you are ready, drive the
vehicle to the highlighted route. Once you begin driving
on the route, the system will give additional audio and
visual prompts, as you approach your next maneuver.
Each maneuver is indicated on the map with a red
maneuver pin.
Maneuver Pins
2-34
Maneuver pins are red “stick pin” icons on the map that
indicate changes in the road or special action that must
be taken by the driver to remain on the currently
traveled road. For example, the road may have a sharp
curve in it. The curve would not qualify as an official
turn on the planned route. However, the driver must be
aware of the curve so that he or she can stay on the
planned route. Maneuver pins are always displayed
along a planned route, but voice prompts and screen
popups will only be given if these features are turned on.
As you are traveling, the current road is shown at the
bottom center of the map screen. In addition in the upper
center of the map screen will be the next maneuver.
Anytime while on the route, you can press the NAV
(navigation) Repeat button to get an audio prompt of
your next maneuver.
Once your vehicle is near your destination, the system
will say “You’ve arrived at your destination, ending
route guidance.” This message is dependent upon the
speed of your vehicle, not upon the distance of your
vehicle from the destination. Traveling at a higher rate
of speed may cause this message to play sooner than if
you are traveling at a slower rate of speed.
Back: This button always returns you to the
previous screen.
Traveling Across Regions
If you want to plan a route that will take you from one
region to another, you must remember that all roads stop
at the borders of a region. See “Regional Maps” in the
Index for more information. In order to plan a route that
will take you across regions, you must use one of the
following methods:
D
Plan a route through a region and follow it until you
reach the end of that region. At that time, you must
load the next regional CD. Repeat this procedure
until you reach your final destination.
D
Use the tenth CD, which only lists major highways
and city centers, to plan a route to one of the cities
on the CD. Once you have reached the region of
your destination, remove the tenth disc and insert the
CD for that region. If you will travel through more
than one region, you must repeat the first procedure
and load the various regional discs as required.
2-35
Colors on the Screen
When a route has been planned, it will be highlighted
on the screen in blue. If you have set a waypoint(s) for
your route, the colors on the screen will change. The
waypoint(s) will be in maroon and from the waypoint(s)
to the final destination will be blue. Once you have
arrived at your final waypoint(s), the route to your
destination will change to blue.
Different colors are also used to distinguish between
interstate freeways, state highways, county roads, major
streets and secondary streets. Highways will be shown
as a thicker line than a general street will.
Global Positioning System (GPS)
The Navigation System determines the position of your
vehicle by using satellite signals, various vehicle signals
and map data from the map CD.
The Global Positioning System (GPS) locates the
current position of your vehicle using signals sent by the
United States Department of Defense GPS satellites.
GPS will appear green on the screen if the satellite
signal is received. GPS will be gray if no signal is being
received. See “Symbols” listed previously in this section
for more information.
At times, other interferences such as the satellite
condition, road configuration, the condition of the
vehicle and/or other circumstances can interfere with
the system’s ability to determine the accurate position
of the vehicle.
The system may not be available or interference may
occur if any of the following are true:
D
Signals are obstructed by tall buildings, large trucks
or a tunnel.
D
Metallic objects are located on the dashboard.
D
Satellites are being repaired or improved.
D
After
-market glass tinting has been applied to the
vehicle’s windshield.
Do not apply after
windshield or place metallic objects on the vehicle’s
dashboard. Glass tinting and metallic objects will
interfere with the system’s ability to receive GPS signals
and may cause the system to malfunction.
If you are experiencing a problem, see “Vehicle
Positioning” and “Problems with Route Guidance”
following for more information.

2-36
Vehicle Positioning
At times, the position of the vehicle on the map may be
inaccurate due to one or more of the following reasons:
D
The road system has changed.
D
The vehicle is traveling on slippery road surfaces
such as sand, gravel and/or snow.
D
The vehicle is being driven on winding roads.
D
The vehicle is being driven on a long straight road.
D
The vehicle is approaching a tall building or a
large vehicle.
D
The surface streets run parallel to a freeway.
D
The vehicle has just been transferred by a vehicle
carrier or a ferry.
D
The current position calibration is set incorrectly.
D
The vehicle is being driven at high speeds.
D
The vehicle is repeating a change of directions by
going forward and backward, or the vehicle is
turning on a turn table in a parking lot.
D
The vehicle is entering and/or exiting a parking lot,
garage or a lot with a roof.
D
The vehicle has a roof carrier installed on it.
D
The vehicle has tire chains on it.
D
The tires have been replaced.
D
The tire pressure is incorrect.
D
The tires are worn.
D
The CD is used for the first time.
D
The battery is disconnected for several days.
D
The vehicle is driven in heavy traffic where driving
is at low speeds and the vehicle is stopped and
started repeatedly.
2-37
Problems with Route Guidance
Inappropriate route guidance may occur under one of
the following conditions:
D
When the vehicle did not turn onto the road indicated
by the system,
D
when route guidance is not available for the next
right or left turn,
D
when the route may not be changed during automatic
rerouting,
D
when there is no route guidance because of a turn at
an intersection,
D
when plural names of places are displayed,
D
when a delay in automatic rerouting occurs because
of high speed driving,
D
when automatic rerouting displays a route returning
to a set waypoint which was missed originally,
D
when the route prohibits the entry of a vehicle due to
a regulation by time or season or any other
regulation which may be given,
D
when a route cannot be found, or
D
when the route to the destination is not shown
because of recently changed or unlisted roads
on the CD.
If the System Needs Service
If you are still experiencing difficulty with your
Navigation System and have read the information listed
here, see your dealer for assistance.
Database Coverage Explanations
Coverage areas within the United States vary with
respect to the level of map detail available for any given
area. Some areas will feature greater levels of detail than
others. If this happens, it does not mean there is a
problem with the system. As regional map CDs are
updated, more detail may become available for areas
which previously had limited detail.
For more detailed information on database coverage,
visit the Cadillac website at www.cadillac.com.
