SPINOLE SPEED CONTROL* An easily accessible speed control drum is mounted
the right side of the machine (as illustrated below). Each spindle is represented
a control knob enabling the operator to quickly set any of the 12 speeds, four
per spindle, ranging from 225 to 3000 RPM, in definite steps, as indicated on the
speed chart (back page). While one spindle is rotating at a pre-selected speed, the remaining spindles are idle.
IN TERCHANGEABILITY OF TOOLS i/2" or %" capacity Jacobs chucks, #2 Morse Taper
sleeve, Burgmaster or Torquomatic lapping head, self-opening die head and any other second operation tools are quickly interchangeable on any station by thread
ing them on or off the spindle nose which has a male %"-16 thread.
OPERATIONS;
Power to the spindles is transmitted from the motor by a universal drive shaft. The indexing mechanism has its takeoff from the main drive shaft through an overload clutch shaft, and when the operator brings the turret head to the up
permost
position, the movement
is engaged causing the cam shaft to turn. As it turns, cams actuate levers which disengages the driving clutch and locating pin. At the same time a gear on the cam shaft actuates the Geneva mechanism which indexes
the turret head, depth stops and speed control drum 60°. The locating pin then locks
the head in operating position. Time required per index, approximately one second.
CONSTRUCTION;
chine. Chuck spindles and shafts in gear box are mounted on Timken Bearings
Heavy meehanite, steel and iron castings are used throughout the ma
run-
ning in oil. Husky, hardened and lapped Helical gears assure quiet, efficient pow
er transmission. Adequate lubrication is provided at all wear points. All dovetail ways are hand-scraped for accurate, smooth operation. These features mean low maintenance cost per machine.

SECOND OPERATIONS
Spindles are mounted in opposed, Class “O” adjustable Tapered Roller Bearings, geared directly to individual clutches by Helical Gears with low, medium and high gear ratios on opposite spindles. Only the spindle in operating po- sition is rotating while the remain- ing spindles are idle.
Meehanite turret head is mounted to a steel flange, which in turn, is mounted in husky double-sealed ball bearings.
Positive, pre-selective depth stops are con veniently located for a quick setup and to hold close tolerances on depth.
Husky, rigid slide moves freely in hand-scraped dovetail ways which
provide maximum rigidity and
smooth operation. Counter-weight
balances weight of turret head, slide and gear box providing sen
sitivity.
The
ram is traversed with
a powerful, yet sensitive
feed mechanism that op-
erates on rack and gear
principle. Feed handle can be easily set for a
most
comfortable
position.
Metal guards shield spindle during index-
ing.
Twelve pre-selective spin-
dle speeds are achieved through the use of a 2- speed motor, a 2-speed clutch mechanism and 3 sets of gear ratios in the
turret head. To pre-se- lect spindle speeds, turn the control knob corre- sponding to spindle num-
ber to any of the 4 po
sitions.

movement plate is mounted to turret. Heavy rack transmits movement from feed handle to slide.

Back view of turret head illustrates the positive jaw clutches, one clutch for each spindle. As each spindle indexes into po sition, the driving clutch engages that clutch. Also shown are the adjustment nuts which draw up the Timken Bearings assuring absolute rigidity and accuracy on any second operations.
Cutaway view of speed control. 6 knobs on rotating drum cause floating clutch to engage either the high or low speed pul leys, and the motor RPM; thus providing 4 speed changes.

Shown are the completely enclosed gear box, oil gauge, and filler hole. The feed handles are positioned comfortably by traversing the feed handle unit through 90° angle. The neoprene gasket seals the locating pin slots. Drive to spindles and gear box is taken from transmission box through universal drive shaft.

TRULY A UNIVERSAL PRODUCTION MACHINE
The #2 Model A BURGMASTER was designed
to lill a long felt need in the metal-working field
for a machine that would eliminate a large part of wasteful handling, which research has proven takes up as much
as 50% of machining time. The universal adaptability and time-saving qualities of the turret head on the BURGMASTER were given prime consideration in designing, with the result that a large variety of operations can be performed on a part, at one station, with a mini mum of handling and operator fatigue.
The fact that the turret head indexes quickly
by power from station to station, allows a num
ber of operations to be performed on a part with-
out moving it from one machine to another, with resultant decrease in machining time and an in crease in the quality of product.
Rugged, precise construction, adequate power,
a
wide range of pre-sclective spindle speeds, long stroke, large work table, powerful yet sensitive manual feed mechanism, and preselective depth stops permit the use of large or small tools on
either large or small parts and any material.
Less machining time, less floor space and power,
adaptability to women operators plus low main tenance and low initial cost.,, all add up to less cost per piece machined jor
you.
